I wandered in here (all by myself.....boo hoo) while waiting for a table for a restaurant up the street (was with my family, the wait was 1/2 hour, I got bored). Saw that the Happy Hour was still in affect, bellied up to the bar and ordered a mighty strong whiskey sour (well drink). For $3 it's definately not a bad place. I was fortunate enough not to wander in while there was a cover charge, in fact, the place was near empty, as it was only 6pm on a Sunday. I ended the night here with my friends during our trolley bar hopping adventure. For being as intoxicated as I was, I still remember disliking this place. The first two drinks I tried to order, they didn't have because 1) they didn't know how to make it, and 2) they didn't have red bull. Booo! No bueno! I asked the bartender just to make me anything good and she gave me something that tasted like a mix between Robitussin and Metamucil. Yakkety yak - no thank you. The music on a Saturday night was salsa, which was okay, but I would have liked more variety. The crowd was a bit on the older side and had no problems hitting on my friends and I; although when we did not reciprocate they pretty much backed off and left us alone (which usually isn't the case when you go out and the guys are bit younger). Love, love, love this bar. Now, I am the kind of girl that HATES paying cover but this is one of the few places that makes it worth it. The music is always spot on and I end up dancing pretty much the entire night. The only reason I did not give this place 5 stars was because of the horrible bathrooms. There is ONE toilet and I have seen it get flooded multiple times. So if you are up for a sweaty night on the dance floor to great Latin music come here! I was always intrigued by this place even when I was a kid. When I use to live at home, it was along the way of my favorite Chinese restaurant, and there would always be crowds of people standing in front of it, smoking it up. At first I just thought it was a bar but then I began to hear music from it. Up until last night, I didn't find a reason to go since none of my usual friends want to even hang out in the Mission. That was until I started making friends who lived in the Mission. Funny... when I lived in the Mission, I never hung out there, but now that I've left, I've hung out there more times in the four and a half years I've lived elsewhere than any other time when I lived at home (and didn't involve eating out with family.) So my friend invites me to the Seaweed Sway Showcase that was held here last night. I told my dad where I was going and he said, "Oh, you mean that place with all the dorky white people in front of it?" I said yes. Oh, the shit my dad says. He DID say that the crowd always looks harmless and that they're just out from their geeky jobs just to have a fun time, so he said it all just for laughs. The show itself was pretty cool. I was with good company, so I had a great time. The beer was cheap and since they don't serve food, you can bring in a burrito or pizza or anything else from nearby establishments. The bartender was friendly and attentive and overall, I didn't feel uncomfortable like I do in most bars. The decoration of this place is pretty bizarre, but that's what gives the place charm. Everything from the disco ball to the alien paintings on the walls to the really cool two-leveled stage... I really dug it. I didn't feel crowded or get claustrophobic since it was on a Sunday (during the Treasure Island Music Festival, a Giants playoff game, with not-so-pleasant weather.) I really dug this place. I'd probably go again if my friend invited me back. Then again, I could imagine myself giving a lower rating if it was super crowded, so I'm glad my first experience with this place was a really good one. read more

This place reminds me of a Valentine's Day dance look in the best possible way. When you enter, you notice the shiny streamers hanging above you, and the lighting is nice and dim. The drinks are tasty and pretty strong, the dance floor is fairly small but sufficient, and the music is not so loud that you can't hear yourself think. I came with a group on a Saturday night, and we were able to get a table in the back, which means the place wasn't *too* crowded. True, there is a cover, but hey, in the big scheme of things, what's a little cover charge, right? read more

Okay--I live up the street from here, but nary am I able to muster the mental strength to make it past the crowded bar area to the dance floor. However, the other night, the DJ saved my life. My roommate and a friend cruised on by the bar, requisite hipsters hanging in front smoking cigarettes. Wafting out of the bar were the sweet sweet sounds of Hall and Oates. The tune? "I Can't Go For That." Now, rarely do I like to exhibit my penchant for Hall and Oates, and god forbid in public. Yes, I may wander through Walgreens buying soap and toothpaste, and all of a sudden I start singing along to "Maneater" or perhaps "Your Kiss (is on my list)", but I don't know anyone who shops at Walgreens at the same time as me, so Muzak-Karaoke is safe. But there was something about the strangeness of Hall and Oates coming out of all places the Make-Out Room. It's as if the San Francisco Symphony started taking over Zeitgeist, and instead of participating in their loathsome renditions of Metallica, played "Nixon in China" by John Adams. So there we were, in front, and I just had to go in. Splitting the group of hipsters, pushing through the group of yuppies (one of which included 5 frat boys and 1 woman--which had trouble written all over it) we made it to the dance floor. Oh consummate DJ! How he spun that evening! It was blissful! Especially hearing some old Salsoul records, of which I've never even heard in a gay club. Talk about irony. read more

FINALLY! I made it to the make-out room. This time we had a group of 25+/- people. I didn't feel that we should all pay a 5 buck cover since we would be spending about 10-20 bucks on booze. I come here regularly with my husband. WE Absolutely love DJ Kool Kyle's mix of music. He is the absolute best! It may not be the fanciest place in town, but it sure does harvest the perfect environment to have some good ol' fun. My only complaints are the air quality inside and the bartenders. After 10:30pm it becomes a sauna inside. It is so cool that it gets crowded but I think there should be a better system to get some ventilation up by the stage/dance floor. After two songs of dancing, you can bet you are sweating bullets! It's cool that drinks are decently priced...but some of the bartenders behave like they hate being there. Wait times for drinks are also really long. The dark haired female bartender has a bit of an attitude. I always try leaving a few extra bucks tip to kinda cheer her up but she just grabs it and tosses it aggressively into their tip bucket. I would definitely recommend saturday nights to any latin dancing fans. It rocks here guys, seriously. read more

The make-out room does not have any dark, secluded alcoves, no soft red plush booths, no barry white or marvin gaye on the jukebox. It is not a good place to make out. It is, however, a good place to see your friends cousins band while drinking inexpensive drinks (happy hour lasts until 9 or 10) and enjoying a generally relaxed atmosphere. The sound system is not great, and the place doesn't hold that many people, but that's alright; bands that require great sound and large capacities do not play here. Only your friends cousins band thats playing one of their first gigs ever. Help them out and buy a cd. During awkward lulls in conversation with the friend of a friend that you just met that night you will look around and notice the tinsel and mylar hanging from the ceiling, the disco ball, the bra rack thing, the bearskin and antlers on the wall, the gorgeous 40s era bar itself, and the vintage victorian crown moldings. This detail will remain in the front of your mind for weeks to come; you will remember the make-out room as a bar with excellent crown moldings. You will still stop by from time to time when you're in the neighborhood or when your friends band is playing. read more

Somehow my personality really jives with this place. Came last night for a comedy show/benefit for a slain Iraqi comedian put on by Laughing Liberally (great stuff) and Reporters Without Borders and had such a great time. A good joke from the night: "We should adopt our policy on Iraq from The Clash. What about an exit strategy? 'If we go, there will be trouble...If we stay, there will be double!" heh heh. It was so funny that when I ordered a Jim Bean and ginger ale and the bartender gave me a greyhound, I didn't even care! Happy hour ran until 8pm. My drinks were $3 each. Hootie hoo. Crowd was fab and typical Mission with a friendly and political slant. I also like the decor and weird-ass art and red walls. It makes me feel calm and peaceful. read more

I went to the Make-Out Room last night for a friend's birthday and it was gay/lesbian night, which I enjoy from time to time. Sadly there are always some good looking guys that I fawn over and try to seduce but despite my efforts I alway strike out. Surprisingly there were a lot more ladies/woman/broads than men, about 80% of the sweaty bodies in the room had a vagina. At one point, my friend and I were scanning the room from potentials for him, and this is what happened: Him: Ohhh, what do you think of him? Me: Oh he's cute. Nice smile, and I like the glasses. *Us peering to get a better look* Him: Uhh...ohh wait...there's something... Me: Are those...does he.....have moobs? Him: Oh wait...that's not a guy... Both of Us: Ohhh.....no. Other than that embarrassing tidbit, I found that my Make Out Room experience was just mediocre. Only one stall for the women's bathroom - minus one. Dance floor being wet and slippery - minus one. **Edit - Earlier I had said I would not be returning back to the Make Out Room, but in the end I can't deny it - I had myself a pretty good time.** read more

I love playing shows at the make out room, however, wasn't so thrilled with the sound man last time I played (Chris). He showed up at least 30 min late. We were all set up for a sound check but when he finally showed up he said there was no time for a sound check so we had to take our equip off the stage so that the first band could hurry up and begin their set (also without a sound check). He wasted both of the bands fucking time and i just found it rude and unprofessional. I'd play there again but this time when the booker says to be there at 7pm for our sound check i'll be sure to ignore that and show up right before we're supposed to play. This place is cool! I love a place where you can either hang out at the bar, or dance on the floor, and this place does it. The decor is really cool, it felt a little bit like New Year's Eve or something. The drinks were cheaper than I thought they would be. I went on a Saturday night where they have Cumbia (?) music, and though I was skeptical and I'm no latin dancer, I thought it was a lot of fun! I'm not a fan of paying entry, but I guess $5 was a fair price to pay for what I got inside. The crowd was predominantly hipster, but there were a few people there who were serious dancers and were there just for the music. It's fun to makeout at the Make-Out Room ;) Streamers for decorations everywhere made it feel like a high school dance, cozy booths along the walls, and a raised stage for bands and djs. Drinks were cheap and strong. People seemed friendly. DJ played a very eclectic set and a handful of people danced. Most people chilled at the bar or in the booths, but it was just a Wednesday night. I 'love' the Mission and it's fun bars! Can't wait to come back here to check out some bands in the near future. read more

3.5 Stars I came to the Make-Out Room on a Saturday night to watch my friend's band play their last show. I love the two level stage and the red lighting, everyone looks good in red light. I even kinda dug all that silver crap hanging from the ceiling. There's a small ass dance floor in front of the stage which were occupied with small tables and chairs and there are booths lining up the walls, so decent amount of seating. $2 PBRs It was hard to tell what the vibe was like since I knew most of the folks in the audience watching the band. One hipster guy spilled his beer on a friend of mine (who dresses like she's coming from the Marina). He was apologetic but she was still really pissed and had no problem showing it (I just washed my hair today!) My friend is kind of a bitch. Fun little place. I've been here a few times, and have always had a pretty good time. The best way to spend your time here is to dance up on the stage. Predictable Mission bar atmosphere: A bunch of messy people sloppily drinking gin & tonics within a sort of dirty, long + narrow room. It's a Latin bar, and I have nothing against Latin music but it's just not my thing - I like to come here when they're playing normal dance/house/electronic music. If I want to dance in Mission I'd much rather go to Medjool, but the Make-Out Room will do if your not dressed for Medjool or if your entourage wants a less upscale venue. Monday Karaoke at this place was *amazing*... but BEWARE, several friends and I had our drinks collected by the wait staff while they were still half full. I'll be nice and give it a mediocre star rating though, since the drinks were well made and fairly priced. Just be sure to guard your drink! Mine had at least a shot's worth of a cocktail left in it, and it disappeared while I was dancing. I asked the bar tender if I could get my half of a Manhattan back, and he just told me it wasn't his fault and that some jerk probably stole my drink. I told my large group of friends about this, and nearly everyone I talked to said that the same had happened to them! There's no way some person was just hovering and stealing everyone's drinks at that rate. Come on you guys, that's terrible service. I hope management makes sure things like this don't happen anymore, because I do really like the venue. read more

The MakeOut Room is my favorite kind of bar. Unassuming from the street, dark, cheap, dirty. With the added appeal of lingerie strewn about. The kind of bar where a "double" is really a triple. Which is good, because you'll need to be wasted to appreciate the mostly wretched bands that play shows here. Still, a strong drink, sultry darkness and a band you can laugh at makes an excellent place for a first date. read more

It's a big time hipster hangout and for those who've actually been going to clubs in the city for decades, don't be surprised that there's decent music being played by really good DJs. After all, hipsters DO have decent taste in music and actually try to expose the rest of the uninitiated to it and do a good job of it. And for the most part, hipsters don't bother me. Entitled, over-privileged folks who can't wait in line to use the bathroom and go ahead and cut do. Bartenders who consistently judge you on the way you dress do. I wear snap backs with 'ethnic' writing on it and a hoodie...so what? Get over yourself and let me be proud of my heritage. Skipping me over in favor of those who 'appear' to have a fatter wallet protruding from jeans so tight they move robotically is extremely annoying. And it's why I refuse to come back here until I see a change behind the bar. Don't be afraid of us who are proud of our heritage or at the very least, respect us. First thought: "This place looks how a Bad New Years day hang over feels." The tinsel hanging from the ceiling looks like someone forgot to take down the decorations from one bitchin' New Years Eve party (kind of like when people leave Christmas lights up year round, but don't turn them on). This place is a perfect example of not judging a bar by its decor. Who doesn't like a weird vampire prom?? And seeing Jonathon Richman here changed my life for the better. The cool thing about this place is it's a fun Mission bar that's randomly hip without being completely overrun by hipsters. But the Make Out Room is definitely a place that's best after a little buzz (I suggest a drink or three before at Revolution across the street) because then you can really get your dancing shoes on and kick it.
