Cool space with a fun dance floor. And the best part? Nicest. Bartenders. Ever. Last time I was there my purse was stolen off the bench where I carelessly tossed it on my way to the bumpin' dance floor. I was completely devastated - no keys, no muni pass, no driver's license, no money, no credit card, no iPod, no camera, no yelp stick. The very sympathetic bartenders took down my name and number promising to call if it was returned. I figured there was no hope, but 40 minutes later they called and then stuck around for an additional 30 minutes while I busted my butt back down there to pick it up. I nearly hugged them all! Although my iPod and camera were taken, my credit card, id, muni pass, work badge, and YELP STICK were still in the purse! Lesson Learned: talk to bartenders if your stuff gets jacked; thoughtful thieves may actually return some of it. read more

Have no fear, Make-Out room is decorated like your senior prom, complete with mirror ball, streamers, and maybe even an undersea theme (not so sure about this last one..). I had a fairly good time there abusing the drink specials -- something like $3 for a mixed drink or a beer. Drinks are poured HEAVY, however the bar itself is understaffed, so you might want to pick up a spare when you finally get the barmaid's attention. Ended up swinging by on Saturday night and had a blast! The tunes were great....old school cumbia, salsa,and reggaeton. The crowd was diverse, laid back and everyone was dancing their asses off! The margaritas are ginormous, and bursting with lime flavor...only $6 (if i remember, correctly). Overall, it was a fabulous night! If you like DJs that play a fraction of a song and then move onto the next one or music so loud you can't have a conversation, this place is totally for you. You'll also like it if you enjoy paying for that pleasure - there was a $5 cover in effect after 10. Depending on your taste, that's either cheap, or insult to injury. I'm in the latter camp. Not to mention most of the songs being spun sucked. Is is just me or is hip-hop these days absolutely terrible when you compare it to the greatness that was late 90s circa Dr. Dre's 2001? This is a review by a non-drinking tea-totaler I'm conflicted about the make out room. I've been here twice, both times for comedy-esqe events. Plus: both events were very funny. No one threw up or got into a fight. Unlike some bars, I don't hear or feel my feet leaving a dirty sticky floor. Minus: the venue itself is not well laid out for it's stage for non-music. There are only a small scattering of cocktail tables, then comes open floor, then the bar and booths. The booths look like a good comfortable place but as soon as the show starts people will be standing on the floor blocking your view. You'd have to get there quite early to get a table. Because the bar area is so far away from the stage , people who have just come in to drink can be heard having raucous conversation during the performance. Still, I'll probably go again. read more

Poor customer service and some rude interactions with staff have left a bad taste in my mouth. On the way in, the bouncer--who was supposedly checking IDs without looking at them--very rudely yelled at those waiting to get in to not block the sidewalk. I understand the need to keep the sidewalk clear. But his tone and aggression were unpleasant and unnecessary. As a first time visitor I was very put off. Also, if you want the line to be orderly then buy a flipping velvet rope to indicate where the line should be. Don't be cheap. THEN the same bouncer later came to aggressively inform me that I could not sit on the stool as I was sitting on it. Again, it was the tone and aggression. He could have said the same thing nicely as I had just given $5 cover to get into the place. THEN I told the manager (bar tender) about what happened. He said "point taken." What he didn't do was apologize for his employee/co-worker, offer any kind of empathy, or hope that I had a good time. Very poor customer service. The decor is cool (esp the things hanging from the ceiling). The music was also cool and my girls are having a great time dancing as I write this review on a Saturday night. That is why this place got 2 stars instead of 0. Very diverse and mixed crowd though. A little bit of everyone in here. After a grueling 6+ hour drive to SF, my friend tells me to get ready in 5 min cuz the cab is coming! I quickly change, put on some makeup, and we haul ass over to Mission. The "Make Out Room" ... sounds like an interesting place. We get there just 10 past midnight or so, and we have pay $5 cover. What? Why?? Ok, whatever, we're here, and we'd probably never find a place for $5 cover in LA. We walk in, and we're like "whoa/wtf?/dotdotdot" This place was like decorated by someone on drugs. Don't get me wrong, it's really cool, just really overwhelming to the senses. I particularly liked the mounted stag heads all blinged out with rhinestones, peals, glass shards, etc. After the initial shock, we gun for the bar and look to see what to get. We ordered: - hornitas sunrise: figured this must be like a tequila sunrise. It's super syrupy and sickly sweet. - side car: not too strong but just bubbly enough to make it not super sweet. I definitely preferred this drink. - coronas (in a can): LOL I read the menu which says "in a can" but my mind didn't process it, and I still expected bottles. It's all good; they still gave us little lime slices to push into the cans. Bartenders were chill, a bit busy to tend to everyone promptly, but ok. The dance floor was small (but I guess decent for SF standards), and it was like weird-ass retro/motown/60s night. I have no idea wtf was being played, but it seemed like people were having a good time.. The nightlife is definitely different from LA, and I'm more of a clubbing type anyway. The only truly important thing to say about this place is "Make out Margarita." This drink is not only tasty but it is KILLER, killer, killer, killer. I drank one of these over an hour and I was, how do I say, DRUNK. And everyone I was with got wasted off of it too. I'm convinced it has special powers. And it kind of worked too. I wanted to make out all over my fiance. And the girl next to me was looking kind of sweet, too. Making this drink quite dangerous, but maybe dangerous in a good way. ;) There is nothing crazily unique about this bar, but is has kind of a romantic ambiance with the candle lit booths. The bartender told me they mean "business" with these huge puppies; the only thing is that I'm certain my blood alcohol wasnt affected at all by this monster mix. I've only ever been to the Make-Out room for Writers with Drinks, which seems to happen every month, and seems to make me very happy. I believe there might be other fun things at the Make-Out room, but I don't know for sure. And I don't need to know, because Writers with Drinks is awesome. I think every time I've gone I've ended up happily tipsy with my head filled with new ideas, and my Kindle filled with some new books. Came here again after the Latin American Club. I was a little tipsy from the drinks there already and from all the boy attention, so I was probably really embarrassingly uninhibited ("loud" would be a probably more accurate description). We got down to the live band El Ritmo. I had one more drink which I am still paying for this morning. Then, even more embarrassingly we sort of did what the club name suggests--and proceeded to suck face. Hopefully his friend doesn't post the photos all over the internet. I came here last night not having any idea what to expect. One of my good gal pals mentioned catching the Get Mortified Show here (http://www.getmortified.com/). I'd never heard of it, but I'm always down to check out something new, so off we went. The idea behind Mortified is adults sharing their adolescent journal entries, letters, short stories, etc. I thought it was hilarious. By the end of it my face hurt from smiling and laughing. As for the bar itself, drinks were teeny-tiny, but strong. I asked for a Ketel and soda, and damn if my glass wasn't filled nearly all the way to the top with vodka. The bartenders were cool, friendly, and I loved the eclectic decor. The Get Mortified show is a monthly happening. I highly recommend it. read more

lo, these many years ago, the Make-Out and the Elbo Room were my regular haunts in the Mission. And the Slow Club on Potrero Hill. About 10-many years ago. I went there tonight to see Armistead Maupin and others read from their works, and had a great time. Even though it was packed and it was hard after being on my feet all day at work to go out and stand in a hot, crowded room for a couple hours. Not much has changed. Sure, the people have changed, but the place remains the same. The Make-Out first taught me the beauty of a dimly lit red bar. I actually saw two hot women making out (10 years ago, mind you) and thought I had died and gone to heaven. These are the memories of an impressionable young man in San Francisco at the age of 22. The Make-Out is still cool. Just not as cool as it was in '97 with two hot girls making out at the bar kind of cool. ;-) This is during the prehistoric internets, if any of you remember back that far. read more

OK, first of all if I could give Make Out Room 3.5 stars I would. But as we all know, you can't, so I'll round up because I'm in a good mood today. Anyway... firstly, the decor is wacky. Don't know what vibe / theme / mood they're trying to create, but something about all the streamers and shiny random stuff is kinda endearing. Hey, at least it's SOMETHING to make the bar stand out... Yeah it's kinda dive-y, but it is the Mission after all. I'm okay with it, and after all it is a rock club, it's supposed to smell like beer and puke inside. Plus, some of that might be MY beer and puke, so who am I to judge? Drinks are good, there's floorspace for dancing, tables for lounging, etc. so that's all good too. But the big drawback to this place is for a rock club, the sound ain't that good, and the stage is super small too. Kinda limits the performers, methinks. And thus, 3.5 stars. read more

Whatever you do, do not under any circumstances sit at the seat third from the right (your right) at the bar. If you do, by fluke end up in this seat, you may find yourself, as I did, staring straight into the face of a ceramic head submerged in merky water. At first, this might not seem like a big deal. It is afterall, a mission bar with mutilated barbie dolls and random slightly disturbing chachkies as decor. But, the head will mezmorize you, it will distract you, and it will eventually traumatize you. It's not so much the head as its pock marked skin, glass eyes, and pacifire studded scalp that really get to you and give you nightmares for weeks to come... Beware the underwater head!! OK, now that that is out of the way. I had a nice experience here my first time. I went for a series called writers with drinks, which was pretty good. There were some people who just chose the wrong passages to read, ones that you couldn't really grab onto and chew. Others that were only mediocre, and others who had moments of brilliance in the midst of a lot of cliches and stream-of-consciousness crap. Some people definitely needed editors! Anyway, it was quite fun however to hear the readings, and the incongruous and odd introductions given to each writer. And the drinks were freakin cheap! Holy crap, 4 dollars for an absolute vodka cran, not bad! I guess because this bar all hipstery, it's supposed to be too cool to care about nice decor or flooring or any of all that. The bar looks like it's a thousand years old, which is pretty cool actually, if they refinished it. The floor looks like a high school cafeteria from twenty years ago, and the ceiling is definitely the same wierd holy cardbord crap we had at my elementary school, but hipsters don't care about that! Anyway, if you heed my advice and stay away from the submerged head, you will no doubt have a good night of cheap drinks here, and walk away a little more hipsterified. read more

I saw a friend's show here and we had a really good time! It's a great place to see someone play as it's the perfect size - not too big and not too small. Dark inside with comfy booths; great dive feel. Cheap drinks and specials: I love the Maker's Manhattan. After one of those I was dancing my ass off...and I am no lightweight. Bartender was slammed as he was alone behind the bar, but he kept his cool and remained polite. My favorite thing about this place is the random art they have on their walls. If this painting hadn't been like 6 ft. tall, I would have tried to carry it out with me. Three of the cutest animated snails I've ever seen painted on wood and then lacquered - I think. Amazing. I took a picture of it in hopes to recreate something similar in my own hand. Yeah, I'll let you know when that happens... read more

Great for a Saturday night out dancing to cumbias, salsas, and other Latin music ! The New Years decor is pretty cool, the crowd is very mixed, and they serve Palomas (tequila w squirt). The DJ does not have very smoothe transitions but overall the music is good. The biggest downfall: one stall bathroom, the bouncer held onto my ID while I went in to get cash from the ATM and handed me back the wrong ID when i came back and now im stuck with someone elses ID. yeah, crazy. read more

Oh, wow. Talk about a trip filled with iridescent slides, poofs of spicy atmospheric bubbles, and cheesy wooden tables and chairs tipping over in slow motion. We dropped in without the intention of going to this bar. It just happened to be along the way of our bar crawl... I am not sure what theme night we intruded upon, but it was as if a modern hippie caravan stopped for a communal get-together. Mix in the Mission neighborhood types with a few jocks just visiting from South Bay and our scene was complete. Drinks were typical, but not watered down. Crowded for sure, but if you can score one of the banquettes along the wall, even better. We spent time dancing in the middle of the room, but there was all sorts of craziness going on all over the place. Not in a bad way...........just in a psychedelic gauzy way. I left with a veil of uncertainty following me......... but regained it once the cold evening air hit me in the face. Great bar, cool layout, casual ambiance. The name of the place was aptly named and could have been attributed to a short make-out session, but I was not drunk enough......besides, my friend does a good job keeping a protective eye out for me (^_^) read more

By the end of this trip I was a little tired of settling in at one dive, only to be dragged across town to yet another, so I begrudgingly gave in to my friend's wishes to hit up Make Out Room (she had found it days before, wandering the city on her own). But as I entered the door and saw the glittering silver ceiling decorations I was immediately delighted. Instead of a cover, we were waved through and sat at the half booth to get a good look at the band. The live music, the atmosphere, the weird deer head made of bottle caps and the disco ball set to "1950s prom under sea" slow spin were just what I needed. I finished off my Colibri tortillas and enjoyed the music for a full 30 minutes, then was off yet again. Loved it here, absolutely loved it. read more

My first memory of the Make-Out Room is from around ten years ago when I went with my cousin. Looking back at that sentence I realize it sounds kind of gross, but it amuses me so it's staying. I was fresh out of college and knew zero about cocktails (I only knew Popov vodka) so I ordered a screwdriver, which was so strong that I threw up shortly after drinking it. Flash forward to now, with many years of cocktails under my belt, and I thought the drinks wouldn't seem strong any more. Wrong. Very strong. Very cheap. I made it through three drinks and my head is telling me I shouldn't have had the third one. Damn. Anyway, drinks aside, I enjoyed seeing 'Mortified' here last night and would definitely go back to see it again. Get there super early if you want to sit in the chairs up front. I had so much fun last night. It was PACKED. Music selection was great but the DJ needs to practice a little on his mixing. Drinks were not expensive but also not anything special. 2 kettle sodas, a cosmo, and a sudwerk were $21. Purty good for SF. There were 2 bartenders and it was a bit challenging to get attention at first, but once they saw you they were really friendly. Lots of hipsters minding their own biz and really friendly people interested in engaging in conversation and dancing. I think I shall be back. read more

Make-Out Room! You've exceeded all of my expectations of what a dirty divey Mission bar should be! Although scorching hot inside when it's busy, I love the space. Big and spacious dance floor, booths for making-out or your hearts desire, long bar in front, great stiff drinks, and a mix of people. Totally digging the ceiling and red vibe. I went here for my 24th birthday on a Saturday night. They played some sweet and happenin' Latin beats. EVERYONE felt like J-Lo. I've been here enough times to drink to know that I don't like it, and that I'd only return if I was dragged here (which I was every other time I've been here). The drinks are expensive and small and not too boozey, AND THEY NEVER HAVE STRAWS. How the hell am I supposed to look classy sucking down my well whiskeys and coke??? It doesn't work without a straw. I played a show here a while ago. The bartender was one awesome lady. I asked for a double Jameson on the rocks- she poured my whiskey into a cocktail glass to the very top! I mean tippy top. I think I just fell in love. Also, she got us another gig from saying nice things about us. One downside- 1 Bartender = long wait for drinks. The decor is silly but fun. Like Jack P down there, it's prom-like (though i never went to a prom, I've seen plenty of movies to justify the comparison) Unlike prom however, there is a giant bear skin hanging from the wall. Bears are my favorite animal. Mega points, unless I hear that the bear was killed unkindly. Post playing there was a DJ. He killed. I'm not much of a dancer, in fact I fucking hate it. But this guy knew what he was doing and he got me out there, cuttin' the rug like a drunken idiot. read more
