I want to gate keep because it's already so popular but the bake sale here is fabulous. I will be dreaming of the key lime pie tart! Exciting flavors, a rotating selection every week, great quality - what's not to love? Line up early and he prepared to wait, but it's definitely worth the time! Very glad I finally made it across town to try this. Service is friendly and there's plenty of space to sit once you're inside!
Maketto is becoming one of my favorite restaurants in DC. I recently went here for a date night with my wife and I was extremely pleased with my experience. On top of the amazing service, the food is absolutely amazing. The brisket definitely stole the show. I love everything about this place. Perfect blend of being hip and fine dining.
Everything we ate here was so yummy! We first had the strange flavor eggplant, which didn't taste very strange - it tasted really good. It was like a tofu, baba ghanoush, but way better. And then, the sourdough scallion pancakes arrived at our table, and my taste buds have never been in higher places. Period. For those folks who like a more pepper - based barbecue experience, I highly recommend the brisket large plate. Also very good were the crispy fried chicken wings, however, maybe a medium plate would have been better used on something more unique to the restaurant. All in all 9/10. And then we ended with the banana tiramisu, which is literally exactly how you would imagine it being and it was so epic. Highly recommend that. Service was really fast and the ambience is really nice.
LOVED the dinner I had at Maketto the other night. I'd heard about this place for years and only now did I finally stop in while grabbing drinks at another spot on H street. First things first did you know that Maketto has been around for 11 years! That's amazing, especially for a small business. And I fully understand why, because this place is a gem. Maketto is a Cambodian, Taiwanese blend restaurant that is surprisingly open from 9 am- 10 pm most days. I love the vibes, the exposed brick, the food, drinks, and the bartender was super friendly. So my friend was telling me that the restaurant used to be half retail store and half restaurant. I'm sure I would've wanted to come in here just to browse all the time because they're definitely trendy and in tune with the culture. Now to my experience. I tried their fried chicken wings and the lo mein. Both are medium plates and large portions. Between my friend and I we were stuffed at the end of dinner and still took some food to-go. All of their dishes come family style and they are not skimping you with the portions. The food was all fresh and soooo flavorful! Kudos to chef Erik, who also owns/created Providencia up the street. I'm so excited to come back to try more because everything sounds delicious. One little word of advice is to check if the restaurant has a private event booked before heading over. I recently tried to go for an early dinner on a Saturday and there was a wedding getting ready to happen. BRAVOOO Maketto, I will be supporting frequently :)
Maketto is an Asian fusion (Cambodian & Taiwanese) place that has a Bib Gourmand recommendation from Michelin. Lunch starts at noon but you can order from their wonderful selection of coffee and tea drinks beforehand. Food and service was great. As we got there early, we ordered coffee and some pastries before lunch. As this was our first time there, we asked our waitress for recommendations and she did not disappoint. Maketto offers small, medium and large plates. Loved the Maketto Fried Chicken and Drunken Shrimp Fried Rice. Will have to come back to try their other dishes.
I liked all of the savoury dishes but most surprised by the noodles - so tasty with the added flavour alongside the noodles themselves. The brisket also was unique with the buttery tasty. I saw this place was known for their fried chicken, but it wasn't anything amazing to me; worth skipping. I didn't really like the matcha banana tiramisu, not sure about the banana flavour and texture. I did like the mochi beignets!
I finally made my way to Maketto and I completely understand the hype. The concept alone is super unique-- Cambodian and Taiwanese flavors brought together in a way that feels both intentional and exciting. The menu keeps you curious and the space itself has that effortlessly cool, laid-back vibe that makes you want to stay awhile. I ordered the Ginger Chicken Soup Dumplings, Duck Noodle Soup, and Drunken Shrimp Fried Rice. The flavors were rich, well-balanced, and felt thoughtfully executed across the board. You can tell there's real attention to detail in each dish. It's the kind of place that's perfect for a casual night out, a solo food date, or even bringing friends to try a few things and share. Safe to say, I'll definitely be back to explore more of the menu.
Two of my favorite cuisines, coming together in one DC institution by the name of Maketto. With food that is inspired by Taiwan and Cambodia, the dishes vary in taste and flavor that makes me quite happy. In my first visit to Maketto, I came for their dim sum lunch on the weekend, and even though I had high expectations coming in, it met my every desire. We started with the pork steamed bao, and man it didn't disappoint. With a hoisin sauce spread on the plate and plenty of hoisin sauce flavoring the pork, this homemade beauty was my favorite of the lot. Having eaten so many bao buns in my past, this one stood out among many I've eaten across Asia. We also ordered the Xaio Long Bao, the Cambodian Noodle Soup, and the Rice Roll with Shrimp. The star of these was the Rice Roll w/shrimp. The shrimp was excellent, the Rice Roll itself was perfect and the toppings and sauce made me want to order more. The Cambodian Noodle Soup was great as well. True to form, we had it with the chicken and it was a perfect encapsulation of the Cambodian soups that I so loved when visiting. Service was good, but most importantly the food came out piping hot. A must with this style of cuisine. The only exception was the Xaio Long Bao, but that could have been due to the sauce cooling the dumplings. As for ambiance, it is a unique model as it is a coffee shop before 11, and then a restaurant and coffee shop after 11. We came around 11:30 and it was in between selling out of all their pop-up pastries and ramping up the kitchen. I will be back, many times indeed.
This was more like a 4.2 than a 4. Maketto is a Cambodian/Taiwanese fusion restaurant with a (well-deserved) Bib Gourmand recommendation from Michelin. We stopped in for lunch on a weekend and found the interior bright, clean, and welcoming. There was a table set up in the front to facilitate an ongoing bake sale, and I knew this was going to be a good meal just from looking at the pastries. We ordered what felt like half the menu, and before long at all dishes started rolling out, starting with a pair of pork bao buns. The filling on these was shredded meat with green onions and some other flavors, served with an (essential) swoosh of hoisin on the plate. Next was (poorly named, but delicious) spicy cauliflower that I would probably just call dan dan cauliflower or something. The sauce had a lot of roasted sesame flavor but I didn't find it particularly spicy. Rounding out starters, we had the sourdough scallion pancake. I wanted something slightly different from the pancake; it's very fried, maybe deep-fried, and I felt like that made it heavier and greasier than I wanted it to be, and a little lacking in flavor agents once you ate the first few bites of each piece that had been in the center. We also ordered a medium plate, the Cambodian noodle salad with pork shoulder, and a large plate, the fried chicken. The noodle salad was wonderful; light, bouncy rice noodles swimming in an acidic sauce with beautifully lacquered, melt in your mouth roast pork. The fried chicken is an absolutely massive portion piled on top what I assume is the same bread used for the sandwich on the menu and smothered in five spice and caramel. There's also what I think might be pickled mustard greens or something similar piled on top and I cannot undersell those pickled greens, which provided a welcome lift to the dish. I did find the breading to be slightly thicker than I would prefer, which also gave it a tendency to flake and crumble off of the chicken, but the flavor was excellent. Service was stellar, and I would not hesitate to return or recommend Maketto as a stop.
Decided to try this place out as it seemed like a unique option in the area. I think the short rib scallion pancake entree is the most worth due to the amount of food you get. It has large fluffy scallion pancakes to wrap with, tender short rib meat, and a thick creamy sauce under with pickled veggies. The noodles and fried chicken weren't anything special to me. I really liked the mochi beignets for their fluffy texture and definitely loved the lemon sauce and fresh strawberries it came with! I wasn't the biggest fan of the matcha banana tiramisu. Our server was nice and the inside is bright.
Went to Maketto for a large group dinner and I was easily able to book a reservation online. We were seated as our party came in which is always appreciated. We ordered about half the menu and everything was insanely good. The Peking duck bao buns had a variety of toppings that elevated the dish, the Maketto fried chicken was out of this world, and the much beignets were insanely good and fresh. This is definitely the type of place you want to go with a group to and share a bunch of plates. Service was attentive with waters consistently refilled. I would love to try out their brunch in the future!
The service was good here and they are responsive to messages. I appreciate both. Unfortunately after trying one dim sum dish I didn't want to try more. I came for the dim sum brunch on Saturday and tried the Rice Roll with Chinese doughnut and sweet soy. This is a dish that when done right provides an interesting juxtaposition between a very crunchy freshly fried doughnut and a soft rice roll. The doughnut I received here was not fried fresh to order (or even close to that), was not crispy, not hot and was hard to even chew. I happened to have the same dish at China Boy that same day. It was almost half the price, fried to order and absolutely amazing. The amazing freshly fried mouth watering one at China boy was $5. Here at Maketto it was $9 +20% service charge (At least the service was good though.) It's possible they have other dishes here that are good but being served a doughnut that's not fresh in a Chinese doughnut rice roll was enough for me to try here. My general rating system: 1 star: I would stay away 2 stars: Has some good things about it but I generally don't recommend. 3 stars: Pretty good. I wouldn't go out of my way to go back but a decent place 4 stars: Great place. I would go back. 5 stars: I highly recommend stopping whatever you are doing and making plans to try it out! An Evie favorite!
This place has been a jewel in the Hst NE neighborhood for years. It threads the needle of representing Pan Asian food w/o loosing authenticity in every dish!! They do Dim Sum well, then knock Laos style Lab out of the park. Their pork is always perfectly roasted and soft and their fried noodles punch with flavor. The cocktails are thoughtful in their craft, infusing ideas from the Orient and still crush the classics. The space always feels hip but inviting and the service is chill, cool, and friendly. This place is a jewel. No polish needed. No notes!

This place has a fun vibe and had great food. For a party of 2, we ordered 3 small plates, and 2 medium plates, and had a few bites leftover. We were stuffed. The best items were off the small dish menu by far. The pork bao bun was my favorite. read more
I took a ramen workshop from chef/owner Erik Bruner-Yang a few years back and he was hysterical and memorable. I can still hear him say: "Oh, add just a little butter here", and then he proceeded to put in a stick of butter to the sauce that we were creating. My kind of guy. So, no surprise that I find his restaurant on H Street to be a special foodie place. Maketto throws down sophisticated yet playful Asian fusion cuisine that comes out of Bruner-Yang's experienced imagination--and it tastes simply marvelous. You gotta trust me (and him) on this. You won't be disappointed. Here's 3 dishes that I find blissful: -Crispy gruyere dumplings placed on a bed of Chinese chili beef. They're pillowy and lightly cheesy and complement the heat of the dish's foundation. -Sourdough scallion pancakes. Made with ginger and sesame, they make me wanna holler. -Duck noodle soup with confit duck leg, wonton noodles, mushrooms and greens. Best in the city. Maketto's website is commendable too; more food businesses could learn a thing or two from it. read more
Came here for a Friday night dinner and we had a great time! Maketto is right on H St but I had no trouble finding parking on a side street. We started with the ginger chicken soup dumplings and of course the sourdough scallion pancake. The soup dumplings were pretty standard but the broth really took it over the top! The scallion pancake texture was fascinating - half was bready and the other half was super crispy. Definitely was loaded with scallions but I didn't get a ton of sourdough flavor - still delish. I got the spicy beef and rice bowl as my entree and it was amazing! Loved the homemade pickles and crispy garlic topping. The portion was quite large and I enjoyed half the next day just cold from the fridge! My cousin ordered the duck noodle soup and she loved it. The prices were so reasonable - we got 2 apps and 2 entrees for $70 (service is already included on your check) which felt like a steal. Service was solid! The bar upstairs is cool and loved all the books along the back wall. Would definitely come back here and try some more dishes! read more

We came here for a midweek dinner and the overall experience was pretty good. We split a few dishes, but we originally thought there were more options for us because we are gluten free. Several of the denoted "gf" items have cross contamination, so this really limited us to about 3-4 things on the menu. With that said, the few things we could try were pretty good. We split the spicy cauliflower, the crystal shrimp dumplings (beware cross contamination), and the wok-fried rice noodles. The server was very knowledgeable about the menu and the service overall was great. The restaurant was somewhat slow for a Wednesday evening, but the vibe is great for a date night! read more
Maketto is wonderful! The restaurant feels casual but the food is elevated. The pork buns were unreal - fluffy, flavorful, and just fell apart in our mouths. I think the cucumber salad is a great way to balance out some heavier flavors and has a delicious dressing. The Gruyère dumplings are very heavy and cheesy, so I would likely get something else next time. We didn't try the full fried chicken but did get the fried chicken sandwich and it's very crispy and full of layers of flavor. read more
revisit and everything was fire again. this has to be my top fried chicken in DC... can't stop thinking about it, and the steamed bao's. also, do yourself a favor and get a drink/coffee. it was so unique and well executed - we got the sesame mocha, and the cold foam has to be one of the best i've ever had. maketto has my heart read more
First off, love the vibes. It was very hip (they had a cool collection of sneakers and street fashion) and it felt very young. Perfect to come for a casual date or with friends. Food was actually really really good! I'm usually skeptical about a lot of Asian places in the US (since I'm so used to good Asian food back home). But the lo mein and crispy chicken here were amazing--- perfect amount of sweet and salty. The sauce on the chicken was super addicting!! Service was fast and good. Great service, were able to get seated as soon as we walked in with no reservation (Fri afternoon), food was delicious and FRESH. Great vegan options and portion size. Prices are reasonable, drinks were refreshing (chai latte & honey latte), my favorite were the gyoza & Spring rolls & the sauces as well! Server was attentive and informative on the menu! Had dinner here which was a great experience. We ordered the Maketto Fried Chicken and Wok Fried Noodle which were both delicious. Both these dishes were plenty for 2 of us to split (we probably should of only ordered one of the 2 especially since the chicken pieces were quite large). Service was friendly and attentive, menu selection good and price decent. The seating was just a little closer than I prefer because you could hear the conversations of the neighboring tables. Overall, our experience was very good and I would return to try some different dishes. read more
I finally ordered the peking duck from Maketto and specifically asked for the tender part of the duck. After all, you miss out on 100% of the shots you never make. They initially said that it would be about a 20-30 minute wait. I didn't mind as I had some errands to run in the area. After the wait I immediately went home to enjoy. The good: The accompanying veggies that come with the duck are amazing. The kimchi, carrot claw, and pickles are perfectly fermented, and the eggplant has a unique and very spicy taste. The bad: In fact, the veggies are the only reason why I would give this duck another try as the duck itself was very and I do mean VERY lackluster. The duck wasn't moist at all and it didn't have a lot of flavor by itself (1/5). However, maybe it was an off day. After, I added in some of the veggies it turned this 1/5 into a 3.5/5. I can only imagine how good it'll taste when the duck is in better condition. read more
Let me just start with a fact - I'm not cool enough to be at Maketto. It's got this amazing hip vibe, with sneakers and clothes and home goods and records and all sorts of memorabilia hanging around, and I'm just a middle-aged dork. That did not stop me from enjoying myself so much tonight, nor did it stop the servers and staff from being absolutely delightful. My friend and I were seated upstairs and immediately greeted with water and our excellent server, Jose. We perused the Restaurant Week menus (we didn't even know!) and the regular menu, ordered drinks, and then grilled Jose until he had basically walked through the entire menu with us. I got the " the kind you find in a secondhand store" drink, which was (you guessed it) a lovely shade of raspberry. And delicious. And had tequila. Need I say more? For our first course, my friend got the spicy cucumber salad and I got the strange flavor eggplant. We both totally love the cucumber salad, it had a really nice mixture of spice and sweetness. We also loved the eggplant, which was a play on baba ghanoush. The portions were surprisingly big. For our second course, my friend got the ginger chicken soup dumplings, and I got the pork bao. Again, both outstanding. I love the delicate flavors of the soup dumpling and really enjoyed the massive bao. as an addition to our already gluttonous meal, we ordered a scallion pancake. OMG. So so good - highly recommended. For our main course, I got the crispy chicken salad and my friend got the brisket. The crispy chicken salad was great, with a complex set of funky, spicy, sweet, and savory flavors. Yum!! I also liked the brisket, which was about the only non-spicy thing we got all night. The sauce was sweet and the brisket was very tender. For dessert, my friend got the almond apple cake, and I got the mochi beignets. Honestly, the beignets were the only thing I wouldn't order again. They were fine, but nothing special, and when compared to the rest of the meal fell flat. But the almond apple cake was pretty damn good. Amazing service, ambiance and food. We came here on a Wednesday and it wasn't too difficult to find parking. I somehow forgot to make a reservation but they took us anyway. We got the Negroni ceremony. It was too strong for me but my boyfriend enjoyed it. We ordered strange flavor eggplant, ginger chicken soup dumplings, num pang sandwich, wok fried noodles, and the egg custard dessert. Everything was amazing. Highly recommend the dessert and noodles. I loved the eggplant too and wish I knew how to make it. The bread that came with the eggplant was warm and comforting. I'd love to come back to try more options. read more
Maketto was so good! every dish we ordered was phenomenal. My favorite was the crispy gruyere dumplings (pillowy, gooey cheese in a crispy shell topped with spiced ground beef and herbs) and the duck noodle soup (fall off the bone confit duck that isnt gamey, and the broth was really clean/not too oily at all!). Massive portions and very well priced. It's a little out of the way for me on H street but i'll definitely be doing take out from here in the future~ read more

I don't have to recommend Maketto, its reputation is already gone out far and wide! Some foodie friends drove up from North Carolina looking for a weekend of good eats. I got a text: "We have reservations at Maketto at 5:30 tomorrow..." This wasn't my first rodeo at Maketto, the H-Street haunt has a unique layout that features a restaurant on the first floor and a vinyl, magazine, and shoe store on the second floor. Upon arrival we were greeted with a welcome cocktail. The service overall was very polite. Here's the rundown on our meal: Crystal Shrimp Dumplings: just like Dim Sum but better. Soy Milk and Dough Sticks: I don't do soy but I love combining dough sticks with soy milk! I've always had dough sticks sans anything. Drunken Shrimp Fried Rice: The perfect amount of heat to kick things up a notch above what you get for take-out. Crispy Gruyere Dumplings: The real highlight of the meal and a great example of the fusion concept of their menu. It was so delicious with great textures and flavors. Wok-Fried Rice Noodles: I can never say no to a fried rice noodle. Smoked Dry Aged Brisket: Another example of thinking differently: the dish came paired with naan. I loved taking the slices of brisket and making "mini tacos" with a torn piece of naan. Mochi Beignets: Perfect size for sharing with the entire table, a sweet end to a wonderful meal. Maketto's vibe and ambiance is such a great fit for the H-Street neighborhood, yet it also stands out with the bold and exciting choices it makes with its menu. Pro-Tip: The bathroom can be found downstairs behind the sneaker display. Also water is served sans ice- you have to ask for it if you prefer cold water. read more

Maketto was a wonderful spot located in northeast DC. The inside was beautiful and there was patio seating for the summer as well. It took a bit longer than we'd hoped to be seated even though we arrived 5 minutes earlier than our reservation but thankfully after that the service was wonderful. We received complimentary champagne as we were celebrating a birthday and our waiter was so helpful, giving us recommendations and helping us figure out what is vegetarian. We got vegetarian pan seared leek and mushroom bao pictured below, wok fried rice noodles, and the tofu and spicy basil sauce which was my personal favorite of the entrees. The star of the show in my opinion was the apple almond cake at the end. The white chocolate shavings, orange creamsicle ice cream, and apple almond cake left me wanting 3 more!!! read more

I literally just love their chicken. I went for restaurant week last year and came back this year because I wanted their chicken again. Their coffee was also super good. Everything else was not as memorable. The service the first time was super good, but the second time was poor. Our second time server's vibe was giving 'I don't need to give good service to these customers because they're young'.' We still tipped good. Besides that, I love their chicken, so I'm definitely coming back again!! read more

OVERALL: disappointed in the flavors they didn't pack a punch FOOD: I got the Cambodian style pho and mochi beignets. The pho was lacking flavor and the container they sent it in was too small. The strawberries that came with the beignets were clearly thawed out and nearly spoiled. I'm surprised they decided to give a customer something like that. The beignets was good. I can't comment on the service or ambiance as I ordered delivery. read more

For a pretty well known DC restaurant, the place was very empty on a Friday afternoon. Made reservations in advance but came in way earlier than expected. Because there were plenty of tables open, they just sat us down earlier. I was excited because it was a Taiwanese Cambodian fusion place. However, I think the dishes that we ended up getting fell more toward Taiwanese flavors. Pidan tofu was pretty basic. The flavors of the actual ingredients were left to shine. Not much other seasoning. Wanting the tofu to soak up the tare a little better. The pidan was very smooth though. Tofu wasn't. Duck noodle soup was my favorite. The soup was savory and seasoned nicely. The duck could've been more tender and moist. A hearty bowl of noodle soup. The you tiao was good, light and crispy. I didn't like the Maketto fried chicken as much as I thought I would. The batter on the chicken was a little bit thick and could've been crispier. However, given how the sauce was a caramel it makes sense why it wasn't as crispy. The flavors were good. The caramel made it sweeter than I wanted it to be. However, the chicken was super moist. Staff were friendly. Overall, I would say most of the dishes have a more Taiwanese flavor profile. I wasn't blown away by anything in particular, but it wasn't a bad meal. read more
First of all, it was very easy to make a reservation. When I arrived, they sat us promptly and the service was high touch. They changed our plating and utensils in between each course and even boxed our leftovers. Second, the interior is huge, two floors. Loved the vibe on both floors. We were seated in the top door and had a retro 90s vibe with VHS tapes and video games. And now, the food. Wow, the flavors. Really loved the eclectic take on the food. Great spices and seasoning. We ordered the guyere dumplings, the sourdough scallion pancake, pork bao, fried chicken and lo mein. Definitely more than enough for 2. I loved the seasoning and the crunchiness of the chicken. The bao tasted like pulled bbq pork and it was phenomenal. The guyere dumplings were a different taste and it was out of this world. The texture of the thicker scallion pancake was a different dimension! I need to come back soon! read more
Tried Maketto with a few coworkers and my wife during restaurant week and our experience lived up to the hype. We tried a wide variety of their menu, including :Sourdough Scallion Pancakes, Pork Soup Dumplings, Crystal Shrimp Dumplings, Taiwanese Fried Chicken Salad, Spicy Beef & Rice Bowl, Cambodian Style Pho, Num Pang Sanwich, Custard Egg Tart, Mochi Beignets, and Apple Almond Cake. For me, the Taiwanese Fried Chicken Salad and the Spicy Beef & Rice Bowl were the clear standouts. The chicken salad included a lot of chicken and a surprisingly spicy, but not overbearing, slaw. The Spicy Beef and Rice Bowl had a number of different hot and cold elements and was a large meal (we got a few out of it). read more
I'm so glad we came across the DC episode of Somebody Feed Phil just a couple of weeks before our trip. This is my husband's first visit to the city. Although it's my 3rd, my 1st visit was almost 30 years ago and my recent 2nd visit was for a short conference and everything was arranged so it did not count. We had no idea where we would eat until we watched the episode. Maketto was one of the places featured. It looked good and a reservation was made! It was very easy for us to reach the restaurant in the H Street NE neighbourhood via Metro Rail and the DC Streetcar from The Mall. After spending an entire day walking the length of The Mall and visiting the Capitol and the National Gallery of Art, we were eager for a nice and leisure dinner so we opted for a table in the courtyard near the back of the restaurant. We felt relaxed as soon as we sat down. Our server José was extremely helpful providing us recommendations. Someone who I think is the owner came by more than a few times, too. We ordered: 1. Crispy Gruyère Dumplings, 2. Cambodian Noodle Salad with Pork, 3. Cambodian Style Pho with Chicken, and 4. Drunken Shrimp Fried Rice Did we order too much? YES! But did I regret it? NO because they were soooo good. First came the gooey cheesy dumpings. They were perfectly paired with a spicy chunky beef sauce. José told us it's the same sauce they use for the Spicy Beef and Rice Bowl (topped with a fired egg). I could eat that every day. Then it was a fried rice. When we saw the portion, we knew we would be in trouble. The aroma and flavour were so addictive that we stopped ourselves from consuming the whole dish to make room for the rest of our order and I'm glad we did. The noodle salad was refreshing. The soup base of the pho was light with a slight tang but also rich in flavour. Both had very generous portions of their respective protein. I'm glad there was a good balance of dark and white meats in the pho and the white meats were very tender. We packed the rest of the noodle salad and fried rice to go. I tried to finish the pho but my gut was already sticking out an inch further than half an hour before so I stopped. I'm looking at the leftover fried rice in the hotel room now and I think I'm hungry again! read more
We walked in without a reservation and they told us it would be 15 to 30 minutes on a Wednesday night so they had us sit and wait. They were so kind and brought over waters for all of us as we were waiting. They asked if we wanted any cocktails, and so off the bat, I felt that the service was going to be great. We then we were seated after about 20 minutes and we ordered a bunch of small plates and we got one medium plate and the server was amazing. She was so friendly and so great. Let us know that we ordered enough food and we got all the small plates really quickly. We got the sourdough scallion pancakes, the spicy cucumber salad, and the strange eggplant which was not strange at all, ha. All three dishes were amazing. We also got that's not pictured the veggie noodle salad, which was a bit of a wait to get, but they were super apologetic and really kind about it and so even though we had to wait a little bit to get our last dish, it was a really great experience because the food was amazing and the service was incredible. Overall, I rate this place five stars because not only was the food great and the service but also the ambience was a great date night and also a great place to just have dinner with friends and I definitely recommend this place on H street. read more

After a late night at library of Congress took a short Uber ride to Maketto. We were warmly welcomed and given a shirt review of the menus. We did not go for the four course meal which is a good deal for $40.00. The food came out with a steady flow. Ginger chicken soup dumplings was delicious. The drunken shrimp had a nice spice and was a big portion. Sourdough scallion pancakes were very good. Spicy Cauliflower was spicy and yummy. The tables are far enough apart to have private conversations. read more

Stumbled upon a total gem. Fusion like No other. We enjoyed the company of Jose and everyone here. The atmosphere was just so wonderful. However...let's get to the real reason why we came in-we were Hungry or Hangry! Wow the the Chicken was Insane and Lo Mein whoa!! Just come here everyone!!! It's SO goooood!! read more

Went for restaurant week and the food was absolutely delicious. My date and I got: tofu num pang, spring rolls, scallion pancake, chicken cambodian pho, coco melon and mochi beignets. The portion on the mochi beignets was very small and they weren't a standout of the night. The best items in my opinion were the scallion pancakes, coco melon and num pang. 3 stars is for the dismal service. We waited 30 minutes for our check and had to literally walk up to the front of the restaurant and ask for it. Then, two servers brought it to us at once. I get that restaurant week is hectic but I do consider 30 minutes a little unreasonable. read more

Service 5/5 Food 4/5 Drinks 4/5 Dessert 5/5 This is definitely a spot that we will return to for Friday night dates. The fried rice with shrimp added was the best item that we ordered! Desert was amazing and the icing that they used was not overpowering on the sweetness. On our return trip we will need to find a different appetizer. A plus was that (I believe it was the owner) saw us multiple times throughout the evening and each time referred to us by name! It definitely set him and the restaurant apart! read more

Due to the hype surrounding this restaurant, I decided to try it during Winter 2024 Restaurant Week since it was a good deal. When I walked into the restaurant, however, the vibes were instantly off. I was directed to seat myself. Once I turned around to sit down, I heard the FOH staff who told me to find a seat, a young woman, start muttering something I could not hear. I turned around only to find the other FOH staff, another young woman, giving me a dirty and rude look. I brushed this off since I just wanted to focus on my upcoming meal so that their rude behavior did not ruin my meal. Unfortunately, things did not get better since the first FOH staff spoke to me in a condescending tone regarding using the QR code to order and pay. It's 2024. I know how to use a QR code. It isn't rocket science. Oh well. At least she read off the menu and pointed out new things for just restaurant week. But she disappeared after that and so I had no other opportunity to inquire about things on the menu before ordering based on my gut. How I was treated was vastly different from how she treated another customer who came in like 5 minutes after me: she was pleasant and extremely helpful. Quite interesting. For the food, I ordered the Taiwanese Chicken Salad. It was delicious and quite filling for a starter. The only negative was that the fish sauce was too much and so, it was quite salty and ruined my hard palate. But, I finished it because it was that tasty. Next, I got Pork Lo Mein. This was quite oily and not as flavorful as I expected. Unsure if the saltiness of the Taiwanese Chicken Salad clouded my taste buds. But, I would not recommend it. For dessert, I had the mochi beignets and they were just okay. I should have ordered the apple almond cake instead. Overall, my experience at Maketto was tainted by the FOH staff members' attitude and customer service. The owners may be aware of this and so that's why an automatic gratuity is included. It's as if they know that customers would be unlikely to tip their rude, inconsiderate waiters. Your FOH staff should be better trained on how not to gossip about their customers right in front of them. read more

Update: Chef Erik got in touch with me and we went through my order one by one. He explained that the wok fried noodles were probably where cross contamination happened and that it was a server error. While the server explained that they clean the woks in between uses, Erik told me they only use hot water and no soap because of the material of the wok. Because of this, it's probably not celiac safe. The other possible culprit was the fried tofu on the Cambodian noodle salad. It's possible the receipt didn't print to the kitchen correctly to inform them to use the separate fryer, but I'm not sure how to avoid that in the future. I was also given a gift card and an apology, which was very nice. I won't be going back but my gluten eating friends will enjoy the gift card! read more
