I had a great solo dining experience at Kyuubi Omakase. The fish was fresh, the flavors were unique, and everything felt thoughtfully prepared. Since I was dining alone, I ended up chatting quite a bit with the chef--he was incredibly friendly and welcoming, which really elevated the whole experience. He even gave me a couple of extra nigiri to try while we were talking, which was a really nice touch. Flavor-wise, it's what you'd expect from a solid New York-style omakase night out--creative, well-executed, and satisfying without being over the top. Everything hit the mark, and there wasn't a single dish I didn't enjoy. They've only recently opened, so if you're looking for a new omakase spot to try, I'd definitely recommend stopping by and showing them some support. read more

Omakase set included 1 appetizer, 11 nigiri, 1 handroll at the end. My favorites were the Madai (sea bream) nigiri, the Otoro caviar (fatty tuna topped with caviar). SO much flavor with the Otoro!, and the Sake (King Salmon, that had a spicy topping). I was really impressed with the majority of the nigiri pieces, and there were none that I disliked! I'm not usually a fan of sea urchin but their Botan Uni (shrimp/sea urchin) nigiri was actually delicious and a great texture. Service - We were surprised that we were the only diners that evening on a Thursday night. We had good service. There was one sushi chef and one other staff member who checked in on us to see if we wanted drinks or any add-ons. The sushi chef was working FAST (almost too fast), because we were done with our meal and out of there after 32 minutes after being seated! I wished the sushi chef had worked a teeny bit slower, so we were able to savor each of the pieces more, and spend more time there overall. I tried to talk to the sushi chef a bit, as I've had great conversations with other sushi chefs in the past, but this chef wasn't as talkative- that's ok! My friend and I stumbled upon Kyuubi and their $68 omakase in East Village and decided to go day of. This restaurant is brand new, so at 8 pm, I was one of only 4 patrons, making for an extra intimate experience. I think there are some kinks to work out, making for a bit of an imbalanced experience. My favorite piece was the unagi, topped with foie gras and truffle. My friend deemed the truffle overpowering the others, but I'm always less of a fish purist and really enjoy multiple flavors and textures paired together -- and it works in this case. On the second piece, the chef applied wasabi a little too liberally, and after my eyes pooled, the chef took note the reduced the amount. The otoro caviar arrived with a flashy display of gold dazzled across the dish. The chef was sweet and gave me an extra spritz for me to record. Sadly, I pulled out a cartilage or thin bone chip as I went through the otoro. The final piece was the toro hand roll, which fell flat. It was a bit bland and came across as mushy fish. I also was surprised they didn't end the omakase experience with a sweet treat -- luckily there are ample dessert spots in East Village to satisfy that craving, but I think I would've taken dessert over this toro hand roll. read more

I had a terrible experience at this restaurant. My girlfriend and I chose it for our Thanksgiving dinner. The food was very good but the man setting our table pressured us to buy additional side dishes. We felt we had the perfect amount, along with our two bottles of sake. When we declined the additional sides we were asked to pay our check immediately. Because the sushi artist was very good, I left a 20 percent tip. As soon as I paid, we were told we had to leave right away to make way for a party of six. I looked down the counter and counted six places already set. And the couple to our right was not asked to leave. Perhaps they had purchased some additional sides. I have eaten at restaurants of every description all of the world and I have never been treated in such a rude, hustling manner, or with such disrespect. I will never return. read more
