Wowww! My friends & I were impressed by this place - it was so beautiful and bougie, right down our alley! The door was gold & heavy at the entrance (way to make a first & welcoming impression), they gave each of us tablets for their menus, the inside was super aesthetic, and even the restroom and hallway to the restroom were aesthetically pleasing. It looked like there was a wedding going on over on the other side of the restaurant; I can see why because of the beauty of the restaurant & the service. Dined in on a Saturday with reservations for five and was seated when everyone arrived. Ambiance is posh, velvety, bold colors, and good for big parties. Food was a bit bland and needed more umami. We enjoyed the appetizers more than the main dishes. Presentation was beautiful. Our waitress needed a little more training. We ordered: Curry carnival: roti got hard quickly, the sauces were good, the green sauce was the least favorite Appetizer symphony: this tower is nice if you want to try a little bit of everything before ordering it alone. Overall super aesthetic/"insta-worthy" restaurant that actually serves good food. Can be a bit of a splurge, but the portions for the main dishes are great! Appetizers, not so much. I would totally come back here with friends for drinks or a date night out. Came here with my mom and grandma on a Saturday and it was pretty empty around 1230. Even then, the service was a bit slow (only 2 servers) but friendly. The menu is a bunch of photos on an iPad, which I found a little excessive. Since it was my first time, I ordered a lot more food to try. Here's what we got, in order of preference: 1. Flavorful drunken adventure ($24) - we added chicken to this. The server mentioned it was spicy, but it was not spicy at all. It might be because we adjusted spice levels for our other dishes to be mild and this one also ended up getting adjusted. It was delicious though, rice noodles were nice and chewy, lots of vegetables and they did NOT skimp on the chicken. I especially loved the occasional taste of Thai basil 2. Chives cake sunrise ($20) - ive had this before somewhere else and really enjoyed it, so I knew my mom would like this, and thankfully she did. It's kind of like a rice cake with lots of flavor and chives. Crunchy on outside, soft/chewy on the inside. Pairs well with the sweet sauce 3. Antique charm fried rice ($21) - we got this with vegetables and tofu. Didn't think it was anything special (I also prefer noodles over rice any day), but again, there was a good amount of veggies and tofu, which I loved! Also, don't forget to squeeze the lime 4. Soft shell crab papaya salad ($23) - the soft shell crab was pretty small, but it was so good. The papaya salad was papaya salad. It's a nice, refreshing dish if you like sour and crunchy veggies. 5. Curry carnival ($14) - 2 pieces of roti served with 3 different curries. Neither my mom nor my grandma liked any of the curry, but they enjoyed the roti. However, it wasn't that much better than the frozen ones my mom likes to buy, so this was definitely not worth for us. 6. Zesty Mango sticky rice ($15) - this isn't actually last place, but this didn't wow me either. It was typical, which is literally just sticky rice (cooked with coconut milk) and mango. I didn't love that they had coconut cream in the little squeeze bottles - I'd much prefer the rice to be drowning in coconut milk/cream lol Service was great, though it did feel a little slow, especially in the beginning. This was due to the servers also making the drinks, but later a designated bartender came in. Admittedly I felt that this place seemed way bigger on IG and other platforms. But definitely appreciated the intimate setting it actually provided. The place is beautifully curated with tokens from Thailand. The service was fabulous, we had Ryan as our waiter and he was attentive even though he had to split himself between the bar and the tables that evening. His knowledge of the menu was very helpful. The appetizer tower was delicious, the green curry was warm and filling. The fried street noodles with beef were so good. All of the dishes were good. The food gods were looking upon me today because I lucked out and got a walk in table on Mother's Day! Im ill prepared but highly favored obviously. I am so glad I found this place because I felt like I was walking into an upscale bar, red carpet included. I feel that everything about this place provides you with an experience. Definitely an incredible culinary experience! The chefs found a way to really elevate and put a twist on traditional Thai dishes. Also, the ambiance here is just very warm and inviting. I highly recommend trying the Appetizer Symphony. You get a delicious mix of flavors in each bite, and the presentation is just gorgeous. The curries were also very tasty and flavorful as well. You can't go wrong with any of the deserts either. The Whimsical Chocolate Tree was one of the most creatively presented desserts I have had the chance to try. My Yelp girlies and I have started doing dinner once a month and we chose Makiin to kick it off. I didn't research Makiin but went with the flow. I got there and found street parking across the street so I didn't have to valet which was nice. It was a mid December evening and I thought the restaurant would be crowded but they weren't. However, when my friend was making the reservation, it said they were full and we could only reserve a certain time. The whole time we were there, maybe 6-7 parties were present and they can accommodate at least 25 parties, plus the bar. I got there late so the girls had already ordered an appetizer. They got the appetizer symphony which consisted of mixed bites of signature appetizers. I couldn't eat most of it due to dietary reasons but the chive cake sunrise was decent. For my meal, I was told the fried fish was really good so I opted for that and sadly, it wasn't. It had no flavor and truly was one of the worst meals I've had in a while. The whole experience just wasn't it. Nothing felt right about Makiin. Not the food, service or even the ambiance. Service was soooo slow for a restaurant that was close to empty. We visited MaKiin with some friends on a Friday night - we made reservations and it was easy to find some street parking in the area. The restaurant itself has a really cool vibe - definitely a nice place to bring folks just based on appearances. Service itself was a bit disappointing. It took longer than expected to actually get a table despite having a reservation. And we were disappointed that they weren't willing to make simple adjustments to orders - we couldn't get some food made spicier or to change the meats out in certain dishes. These would be simple changes at any other Thai restaurant. Drinks were okay - 3/5 - some interesting spins on some classics. Presentations themselves were nice though. The food itself was okay. Appetizers: - eggcelent- 3/5 - cool presentation and unique dish, but not something I particularly enjoyed taste wise. - savory cones -3/5 - samosas in a cone - pretty average. - curry carnival - 4/5 - these were good - flaky bread and 3 different curry options - calamari - 4/5 - pretty standard Mains: We asked which their best chicken dish was on the menu and our waiter said they took it off their menu, so they didn't have it anymore. Which - 1) why would you do that? And 2) why tell us that? Instead we got: Drunken adventure, Fried rice, Pad Thai, Thai basil chicken - 4/5 good, but no different than other good Thai restaurants. I believe this was one of their first weekends offering the lunch AYCE, and I visited with a group of three. The food was excellent, and honestly, I was surprised at how much value we got from it. However, we did have to wait about 50 minutes between our two rounds of food. One of the waiters stopped by to explain that the kitchen was backed up and they hadn't fully anticipated the volume of orders and customers. We also had an unusual situation where a nearby table asked if we could switch spots with them so they could combine tables for a larger party. They claimed the restaurant had approved it, which seemed odd since staff typically handle such requests. Still, we decided to be polite and switched. It turned out they hadn't cleared it with the restaurant after all. So, why the four stars despite the wait? It all came down to the staff. From Jordan, the manager, to the servers, everyone was incredibly kind, attentive, and apologetic. They checked in on us frequently and went out of their way to make things right. They even offered to cover our entire meal. While we appreciated the gesture, it didn't feel right to accept, so we compromised by taking care of our waitress instead. I'd absolutely come back again. The food was delicious, and the staff were genuinely amazing. The owner also reached out to us on OpenTable to invite us back for a complimentary meal. Very appreciative. read more

My suggestion - Go here for the overall experience. Because I feel they really do try much harder here. For example, they actually read the open table reservation where I noted that we were there for my kid's graduation. Never before in my time in Houston has a restaurant actually took the time to read that special occasion box. Never. And not only did they read it they set out a special lit sign for her on our table congratulating her as soon as we were seated. Really nice touch. They also have a person coming around taking framed photos to memorialize that special night if you want one for $20. The framed photo comes with a MaKiin postcard with your picture on it as well. The ambiance is nice with nice decor. I checked out the bathroom and liked the street signs in the common area. They got cloth towels too to dry your hand (fyi the girls bathroom sinks are auto while the guys are manual even though they look identical). The manager made the rounds and greeted folks which was nice and classy. Waiter was really nice although he spent a lot of time talking with the other staff and we had to call him over for the check at the end after waiting for a while. The food has good showmanship. For example the cotton candy chocolate tree (desert wonderland) and the short ribs in hot curry which sizzles when the curry is poured on. The curry flavor was good and spicy although the meat was just ok. The noodles tasted a bit stale. But I mixed them in the soup and they became soft (maybe that's what you're supposed to do). I haven't had cotton candy in like forever. They even brought out my daughter a complimentary mango ice cream to celebrate her graduation. Again Nice touch. It had some nice crunchy bits on the bottom and is served with dry ice for a smokey effect. We took advantage of the $9 happy hour appetizer plates (about half a dozen to select from) including the shrimp toast and corn fritters. I had to try the calamari too although not on happy hour menu which was nice and crispy but not much flavor (although we later saw there is actually sauce at the bottom of the plate a but also not much flavor although my kid liked it). The Thai street noodles tasted like ordinary Chinese noodles. Not my favorite but again my kid liked it so that's what matters (although the MaKiin branded chip on top was a little stale she told me). There is no kid menu if you're wondering. There is 2 hour free parking across the street in the garage as well as free parking downstairs (I think you can park in the well Fargo spaces there at night too after they're closed if there are not any other spaces) and on the street. Great experience at Makiin! A new upscale Thai restaurant in Houston. You're paying extra for the nice ambiance, service, and unique presentation of food. Each item on the menu had a label for those with food allergies - they have labels for shellfish, peanut, vegan, and vegetarian. They have quite a few dishes that can be made vegan or vegetarian! I tried the chive cakes, tom kha soup, garden bowl, and drunken noodles - all vegetarian. Everything was tasty and unique. They are not stingy on tofu so each dish was very filling and we had enough for leftovers. Each dish I tried came with the equivalent amount of tofu as an entire tofu block that you can buy at the grocery store! The chive cakes were crispy and the sweet and sour sauce it comes with was delicious. The garden bowl broth is delicious and I liked that it comes with a large set of vegetables. Tom kha soup - I thought the soup was a little sour in flavor but was still delicious and a good portion size The thai tea was also uniquely creamy. Came here on a date, and honestly and truthfully we will not be coming back. Granted we were a bit late as there was no parking but when we came into the restaurant we stood at the hostess booth for 5-10 minutes before someone acknowledged us. Server even passed us up without saying anything...so disrespectful. The food...it was very bland and my boyfriend ate his crispy garlic chicken because he was hungry but he didn't care for it. It wasn't crispy and was a bit on the soggy side. I ordered the seafood dish with vermicelli noodles and it was flavorless. On top of that the server barely came to our table to check on us, or even ask us if we liked the food. I really was excited to try this place, but they dropped the ball. My wife and I had dinner here last night with friends of ours (another couple). The restaurant is beautiful. Not too garish but tastefully ornate. Colorful, bright and sparkly. Reminded me a bit of the type of restaurant you might find in one of the nice Last Vegas resorts. The service was very good as well. The only nit may have been that the drink orders took a long time. I always find this odd as it seems like getting drinks out fast would be a profit center for restaurants (especially when cocktails cost ~$15). A lot of the drinks and food are served in what seems like cool, custom glasses/plates. One example is their signature cocktail comes in a diamond shaped glass. The curry appetizers come on a ceramic elephant-themed serving dish. We decided to do "family style" to try a lot of dishes. We had: Curry Carnival - 4/5: We had this for our appetizer. 3 different types of curry (Panang, Tumeric and Massaman) served with a Roti bread to use for dipping. It was interesting that all three types of curry was the favorite of at least one person at the table. Overall, a good and fun dish to start the meal. Award-Winning Chicken (Chef O Masterpiece) - 4/5: I don't generally order chicken at restaurants but glad I got to try this. Lots of flavor and fun presentation. A bit pricey for what it is though, especially compared to the prices of the other dishes. Pad Thai Goong - 4/5: Classic Pad Thai but the 2 prawns served on top were huge. Good overall flavor. Short Ribs in Curry - 4/5: Thinly sliced meat in a curry sauce. The server pours the curry in tableside so this is a bit of "presentation dish." Very flavorful. It wasn't too busy on a Thursday night but there was a great energy and I loved the live music! The service could not have been better. From the sweet hostess to my favorite bar server ever, Sara, the bar has been raised. The hybrid gem/martini was delicious and beautiful. I was a little hesitant on food because I'd glanced at the menu and it looked pretty meat heavy. Luckily Sara told me the proteins could be replaced and made exceptional recommendations. This restaurant is absolutely stunning, from the table settings to the huge mural that covers one side of the restaurant. And the food is equally beautiful. The plating and food presentation is top notch. As for the flavor, it definitely doesn't lack, but I also wouldn't say it's much better than some cheaper Thai places. In the end, you're paying for elevated presentation and ambiance. Of the food we had, I highly recommend the Flavorful Thai Adventure, which is essentially pad kee mao, and the Sizzling Northern Adventure, which is a curry noodle dish. For appetizers, I recommend getting the Appetizer Symphony, which is a sampler and portioned for two. As for dessert, I didn't love their elevated take on the mango sticky rice, but we did enjoy the Coconut Ice Cream Fantasy. Last but not least, the service was 10/10. Parking is plentiful across Kipling road in the free parking garage for that area or you might try street parking (probably wouldn't recommend parking on the street on a busy day tho) or valet. Starting w the heavy and gigantic golden doors engraved w MaKiin on it you get the feeling as the doors open that you are entering into a hidden world.The decor and artwork/murals are amazing, a feast for the eyes. There was even a singer with a guitar which also lent to the elegant ambiance. The waitstaff was dressed in traditional Thai clothing. Everyone I went with kept commenting on a different unique aspect of the restaurant they spotted throughout the dinner. As far as service and food both were good but maybe not excellent. Our waitress was initially very attentive and helpful w suggestions on food, drink and dipping sauces. Having had a lot of Thai food in my life I was a bit sad to not see my favorite curries on their iPad menu. Yes I'm basic and will always get a yellow or red curry! We shared a variety of appetizers and entrees, my personal appetizer favorites being the corn fritters and Panang dumplings, while out of entrees the drunken noodles were especially tasty. I had the crispy garlic chicken which was a very generously sized popcorn chicken type with Thai garlic sauce. I liked the crispy kale on the dish the most. Food presentation for all the dishes was artistic and portion sizes were large, great for sharing. Even the dishware from plates to utensils and glasses for drinks etc were uniquely stunning. Every dish was served on a different plate! Clearly no expense was spared in the details. And can't forget the drinks. The cocktail menu had a nice variety of Thai inspired drinks, rather pricey but beautiful and tasted great according to everyone who tried one, the mango one looked especially luscious. After all the food sharing we skipped dessert but we saw several being served to other tables and they looked so fun! In summary, for me, this is the Thai equivalent of fine dining like Musaafer is known for Indian food in the Houston area. Their desserts (sweet rice mango) and bonsai all edible pieces are tasty and fun to try out for the artistic experience. Although it's a Thai restaurant, but their curry dishes are beyond disgusting, it's super salty and the curry is more westernize taste. Overall, I felt people come here for the drinks, atmosphere and dessert. The service was good but expect slow service for the food to come out. We had at least 2 drinks in between our food as it came out very slowly. The restaurant decoration is very beautiful, fine dining like, with a very loud DJ if you come at night. It's not cater to older folks who enjoy the quiet atmosphere: this place is young, live, and hip. I wish their food is tastier, then I can give more higher rating. Went with a couple people so got to try a few different teas- they're all pretty sweet which I like. The small bites were all very good as well! I always have a terrific experience at Makiin! The staff are super friendly and make me feel right at home. Everything I ordered was fresh, tasty and beautifully plated -- you can tell they care about their food. Great vibe, great service, great food. My go-to dishes to to start the spread consist of their silken calamari soiree, roti, basil mussels, and crispy garlic chicken as shareables (the chicken dish is actually an entree but great to share with a group). While I may not be a cocktail person, my friends all enjoy their signature drinks both for the taste and presentation. I dined here with a group of friends for a birthday dinner. I was very impressed by the ambience, service, and decor of the place. We arrived to a table with a cute birthday sign set up for the birthday girl. Off the bat, I noticed the drinks were pricey but didn't hear any complaints from those who purchased, so I'm assuming the drinks were good. The presentation was very cute, with different types of drinks presented in the cutest glasses. We ordered a variety of appetizers including curry carnival, calamari, creamy crab bites, and Brussel sprouts. The portions were a nice size and the flavors were good. My least favorite was the curry carnival as I've had softer roti elsewhere. But the Brussel sprouts and the creamy crab bites were delicious and memorable. The service was really good. I noticed the staff patiently waited for us as our group took pictures. They also cleaned the table between courses, kept up with refills, and switched out the dinnerware between courses. I hope they maintain the level of service because I was impressed. Dinner was good. We ordered a few different dishes so the entire group could enjoy family style. The Sizzling Northern Adventure was the group favorite for sure. Everyone commented on how it was their favorite. While the price point of this restaurant is not something I would do regularly, it is definitely somewhere I would return to for a special occasion. read more
