We arrived there early Friday evening and we able to enjoy the Happy Hour prices and sample some of the appetizers. We tried the lemon grass chicken skewers, the potstickers and shrimp toast. They had the perfect amount of seasoning and slightly aromatic . I especially enjoyed the skewers. The service was very attentive, but we also came at an early hour. We had a great takeout meal from MaKiin. The only serve their "classics" menu for takeout, and we had the chicken fried rice ("antique charm") and peppercorn beef ("flavorful Thai adventure") and thought they were both very good. The beef was very spicy and so delicious--I liked the noodles in that dish as well. The chicken fried rice was a step above your typical fried rice and was delicous. To be honest, I'd say that MaKiin is probably more suited for dine-in than takeout. We came at 3 pm and the restaurant was almost empty because of the time. We were told we couldn't order dinner or happy hour until 4 pm so we started with two lunch dishes and then ordered 3 more dishes later. Curry Carnival: 4/5 Wish we had more of the delicious roti. I didn't like all of the curries but appreciated the variety of flavors. Royal Pad Thai Delight: 2/5 The noodles were standard but the prawns did not have a plumpness or snap to them. They kind of fell apart in the mouth and didn't seem that fresh. Panang Dumpling and Corn Fritters (Happy Hour): 3/5 Both dishes were okay. Unique flavors. Award Winning Chicken: 3/5 This dish had the least flavor besides the sauce under the food. The server sprayed some gold dust on the plate before we ate it, so it was the most beautifully plated. However, everything on the dish was plain. Throughout the meal, staff consistently cleared plates and replenished water. However, when I was ready to order from the dinner menu and get the check, we sat there awkwardly for awhile when there was almost no one in the restaurant. DATE NIGHT V. FAMILY NIGHT: We somehow managed to dine here with a toddler. It was raining really hard and we dropped by on a whim (cancelled our trip to Chinatown and drove just a couple minutes to come here). Believe it or not, this place has high chairs. It's surprising because when you see the place, it doesn't feel child-friendly at all. It is dimly-lit with extravagant decor -- a "date night" spot, for sure. Funny enough, even their high chairs were fancy (not those ugly wooden ones everyone else has). I appreciate that they offer high chairs but I don't think I'd come back with my toddler. There were a few couples on dates at other tables and she started being a bit loud so it was a little uncomfortable. That being said, if you do decide to bring your kid, do it earlier in the day before things get really "romantic" in there. DELICIOUS FOOD: I was expecting run-of-the-mill Thai food since I figured they invested maximum efforts on the ambiance and not so much on the menu BUT I was very pleasantly surprised. The Sizzling Northern Adventure was stellar. So much flavor! The short rib was incredibly tender. It was on the pricey side at $39 but a very large portion with beautiful presentation. Overall, their food is expensive but the portions (particularly the amount of meat included) are very generous. We also tried the Flavorful Drunken Adventure and it was fantastic as well. Generously packed with tender and flavorful beef. I also loved the crispy kale on top (it felt similar to air-fried kale chips, just not as crispy). That was such a nice touch that really took the texture to the next level. Other restaurants should take note -- crispy kale wins over soggy kale any day. We had plenty of leftovers to take home but they got devoured within hours. Some of the best Thai food I've had in Houston, to be honest (and I've tried quite a few restaurants). SERVICE: The service was very friendly and fast. Cameron was great. Special thanks for being so sweet to our toddler -- he attempted to have a full conversation with her. We had the buffet, a couple of sharables and entrees, the high tea, drinks, and desserts. I will say the buffet is probably the best value. $29 for a handful of different foods - Tom yum, Tom kha, pumpkin curry, drunken noodles, fried rice, stir fried veggies, stir fried seafood, dumplings, tofu dish, and I'm sure I'm missing some. Pretty good variety for the price. The entrees we ordered were just okay. Thought that they were overall too sweet or missing something. High tea wasn't too exciting - a chicken and pineapple bite, crab Rangoon, veggie dumpling, a savory curry cone, sticky rice with mango, and a pandan cake plus 2 different teas - a butterfly pea tea and a lemongrass one. Everything was very mid and not super flavorful. The teas lacked a lot of flavor - just a hint with some sweetness. I got the mango drink they had - overall pretty yummy but pricey! And lastly the desserts were very pretty - but again very mediocre. The creme brûlée wasn't very smooth - was very eggy. The cotton candy tree was pretty but it was really just that. A highlight that shocked us was that out of the three desserts we tried, the cotton candy forest was the most delicious! Amazing ambience, food and service! We were impressed as soon as we stepped in and were greeted by the flashy yet elegant decor. Our waiter was patient as we took our time looking through the menu and finally decided on the Beef Drunken Noodles, Chicken Pumpkin curry with purple rice, Brussel sprouts and calamari. The dishes were all good, perhaps a tad on the salty end, but the Brussel sprouts and curry with purple rice were my personal favorites out of the 4, although the beef that came with the drunken noodles was also very tender and flavorful. For dessert we tried the Dessert wonderland and the coconut sorbet. Although the menu images of the Wonderland really caught my eye, and it was definitely a very fun and novel dessert, the sorbet ended up stealing the show both in terms of taste and presentation with the mist! Our waitress was incredibly slow the entire evening, barely checking on us, and even told us certain menu items weren't available--yet we saw them being served to other tables. She also took away our drinks before we were finished, which felt rushed and inconsiderate. On top of that, the seating arrangement was awful. We were placed so close to another couple that we were practically rubbing elbows the whole night--zero personal space. And while I appreciate a good DJ, the music was ridiculously loud. It was a strange mix of pop with EDM beats, and I couldn't even have a conversation with my husband sitting right next to me.
