For drinks we got the diamond and the Smokey drink. The appetizer sampler-- definitely recommend that.. it was perfect for the two of us as each of of us got to try the 4 app that were served.. each one was unique and tasty..the northern adventure and the drunken noodles and ended our meal with the mango sticky rice... loved the presentation and the flavors.. We went for a pre-mothers day lunch with friends on Saturday. While the restaurant was fairly crowded, our reservation enabled us to get right in. Host wasn't the most helpful. We had two babies with us, one for a high chair, one in a stroller. This information was IN the reservation. We had to remove a chair from the table to accommodate the stroller, as well as find the high chair ourselves. Menus are on a tablet, which is never my preference. It limits your visibility of just a handful of items at a time and had too many pages to swipe to to be handy. 2-3 pages? Fine. But 12-13 is too much. Either consolidate your pages a bit or go back to a normal menu. Service at the table was fine, though not stand-out by any means. The food... This is my final gripe. Pricing was high, and while portions were adequate, it just wasn't anything special. We had 4 sharables and 4 entrees between 4 adults. All food was just ok. The savory cones, Thai chicken bits on pineapple and Brussel sprouts were underwhelming. the calamari was decent but didn't have nearly enough sauce for the serving. The pork ribs were ok but the veg served with it was flaccid, under seasoned and cold. The chicken Pad See Ew was very underwhelming, strangely flavored, and cold. The Garlic Chicken was good but among the rest of the underwhelming meal didn't get the attention it deserved and lastly the Khao Soi was the best dish of the day, but was still too spicy for the table after having requested it be mild. A glass of wine and two cocktails were also ordered, all with reasonable success. All this for $240, before tip. Our reservation was at 1pm, and by the end of our meal the restaurant had cleared out after lunch rush. Service dipped and we had to hunt for our waiter a couple of times. I'm not sure we're going to go to the trouble of going back there. We live in a city with a huge Asian population and there are a number of other Thai restaurants we can patronize for better food for less money. The atmosphere didn't add to our experience enough to legitimize the failures here. read more

I'm Thai and have a good sense of authenticity of flavors. It's really hard for me to be impressed by Thai food in America, especially fancy Thai food. I was very pleasantly surprised by the authenticity of flavors here. Their seafood medley with glass noodles is basically Goong Ob Woonsen with premium seafood and is one of the best Thai dishes I've had stateside. It's on par with good restaurants in Bangkok! The Tom Yum mousse in quail egg was also a standout. Drunken noodles was better than most places in Houston. The pork chop was on the dry side which was maybe the only miss for us. Overall you can taste the authenticity of flavors. Service here was top notch. Our server Logan was very attentive and friendly. Will definitely be back! read more

An extraordinary experience for taste and dining. From beginning to end as we walked in the door and sat down the entire staff was attentive to our questions and service. It was our first time here and MaKiin surely did not disappoint. The presentation of the dishes were vibrant and appealing to the eye, but the pictures do no justice to present the taste of the dish itself. Each dish we ordered filled our palettes with a burst of different flavors that was above any standard Thai restaurant. Compliments to the Chef and his/her team for involving molecular gastronomy into their dishes. I came for Mother's Day for the High Tea Service. We started off with butterfly pea tea in gorgeous tea set. The butterfly pea was amazing! I recommend the butterfly tea for sure. Next a beautiful gold cage came out with the tastiest mini bites. My favorite was the rice cake with salmon and the mango with sticky rice. Everything was delicious. Asked to speak to the manager and he was "too busy" cooking to come and speak with me about why it had been so long and for some reason everyone else's food was coming out before ours. Don't recommend coming and wasting your time here, when they can't even be bothered to come explain why no food has showed up. Dad and I were offered a high chair and smiling service. I'd say just be mindful of what you order because some dishes are spicy for children. The Fried rice was perfect and accommodated our baby just fine. The restaurant is clean and the ambiance is high quality. I loved the wonton soup and it was not spicy very hearty and flavorful! Mousse tasted like air, nothing impressive with few dried shrimps on a bottom. The hot basil mussels was decent. For the Tom Yum Goong bisque, it had big and nice shrimp but didn't taste fresh, the mushrooms cut in big chunks but totally undercooked, and they used small tomatoes, definitely doesn't look hearty like picture on the menu. Soft shell crab papaya salad is ok, papaya wasn't fresh and crunchy enough, and had only 1 small fried soft shell crab as a garnish. Majestic Ocean Medley crystal noodles was the best out of whole meals. Overall, if you expect a real authentic Thai restaurant, this is far from it. read more

Let me start off my saying that our waiter was amazing- Cameron. Ask for him! He's just great. He truly made our first time experience incredible and was well knowledgeable about everything on the menu. We went for our 4 year anniversary to celebrate and everything about this place did not disappoint. We didn't get any entree's, but instead got different appetizers to try. When you first walk in, you're walking down a red carpet leading to two very large doors. The restaurant itself is kind of small-medium sized and very beautifully decorated and ornate with the Thai culture. We were promptly seated for our reservations and when we sat down, they had a cute lit up sign that said Happy 4th Anniversary. It was so adorable. And we had complimentary champagne and a small bite. We came in with the plan to try different appetizers rather than the entrees. So we ordered the hot basil mussels (highly recommended and hyped up by our waiter), curry carnival, the calamari, and the creamy crab bites! Everything was all so delicious. But the star of the show was the hot basil mussels, exactly as the waiter recommended. I honestly just wanted to douse my bread in the sauce. It was so delicious and had the perfect kick of heat. By this point, we were already beginning to feel full, so after the appetizers, we went ahead and ordered desserts. We ordered the dessert wonderland and the coconut fantasy, which were so delicious! But my favorite probably would have been the coconut ice cream since I love anything coconut flavored. The wonderland dessert looked really cool, which was mainly why I ordered it. But the coconut ice cream was the one perfectly for me! The drinks were also fabulously delicious and pretty strong. Highly recommend the diamond drink if you like something more sweet. Overall, my experience here was a 10/10. The staff were all so incredibly kind and helpful. The food was out of this world delicious! And the whole vibe was just perfect. Especially considering this is the same owners as Kin Dee; take the L and keep on moving. Makiin is what happens if you tell someone to be Michelin quality without any knowledge of what that means. Lack luster experience with unnecessary theatrics that cannot detract from the mediocre food. At this restaurant, you're largely paying for the performance, artistic "conceptual" nonsense, and unnecessary amounts of sprayed gold and caviar. This place has all the frills and all the nonsense. Server was doing the best he could with the tools he had. The good pretty much stops there. ** didn't have it but the $65 "award winning" chicken is only $65 cause they layer it with gold flakes. This is disrespectful as a patron. Can I pay $20 if you keep the gold? Don't want or need your gold flakes, and I'm sure they would have laughed your ass off stage if you tried that when you "won" your award. Knew the madness was about to start when our waiter told us: "to celebrate his award we layer it with gold flakes"... HAHAHAHA. According to pictures and others' comments, it's 4 pieces of fried chicken. Ridiculous! Egg dish wasn't an egg. It was whipped Tom yum soup inside an eggshell; with three tiny caviar eggs on top. They'll have you focus on the "caviar" so they can feed you this regurgitated excuse for an app. Next the calamari; they probably ordered it from an Italian restaurant, plated it, and brought it to our table with a couple pieces of caviar topped on. Roti was twisted, cold, and came with two tablespoons of dipping sauce. Bland, and overpriced; they could have done so much better. Not crispy or flakey at all. Tom Kha came deconstructed. Seaweed and other pretentious ingredients, and a separate teapot of broth was poured in. Mains: Pad see ew: purely ok.Though it was described as thin/ vermicelli like noodles, it didn't do it any favors. Please reconsider traditional flat noodles. Seafood medley; soft shell crab, half a lobster tail, shrimp, bacon.... BACON?? How does bacon belong with seafood; then burnt noodles at the bottom of the bowl. Bro. For $50; do better. Beef short rib; $40 and came with two thin slices of shabu beef. Curry base was too tangy, didn't have a true curry flavor. Pad Thai: ok. Nothing special. Worth $35? You decide. I could continue but those were the highlights. You can dress a pig up in diamonds and gold, but it's still a pig. Overall very disappointed from this over hyped restaurant that hasn't even been around for that long yet. Hopefully they'll get the memo of their overpriced unimpressive food and change their business strategy so they can afford their rent in river oaks. read more

Can't wait to go back!! I had specified in our reservation that it was our anniversary and everyone made the night so special for us. The food was amazing! My husband and I shared the wagu and the pad Thai and both dishes were absolutely perfect and even though very different, they complimented each other beautifully! The deserts were heavenly! Our meals were delicious and filling but nothing left you feeling overly stuffed or heavy. And everything was so beautifully presented, even the chopstick rests and the check booklet were gorgeous! I wish I got some pictures but we were just enjoying the evening and present in the moment! Our waiter Logan was very professional with a fun attitude, he was such a pleasure to have! Makiin is one of the best new restaurants we've tried in Houston in a while. Our waiter was extremely knowledgeable about the menu, very friendly, and made our night unforgettable. He later mentioned that it was his second night on the job, which we would've never known. We also put under our reservation that we were celebrating our engagement, and everyone from the hostess to the waiter to the manager congratulated us. They put up a sign on our table and offered us complimentary champagne to celebrate. Review of the food we ordered below: - Appetizer symphony: presentation was stunning - it came out on a tree. Our favorite was the chive cake, but this is the only item off the tree we'd order again. Everything else was good, but nothing outstanding. 3.5/5 - Curry carnival: roti with curry sauce is one thing I will always order when I see it on a menu. My fiancé's favorite was the panang curry. My favorite was the Massaman. Very tasty. The third curry was ok. 4/5 - Creamy Thai comfort (Tom kha): broth was flavorful and poached chicken was extremely moist. Loved the presentation with the broth being poured out of an elephant pot. 5/5 - Award winning chicken: I can see why this won awards. Chicken is crispy on the outside, juicy and tender on the inside. The sauce was so flavorful, we were so close to licking the plate! 5/5 Mango tart: I'd pass on this next time. It was basically mango sticky rice inside a tart shell. Mango sticky rice was fine, but I wasn't a fan of the combination of the tart shell with it. 2/5 Flavors of the East: creme brûlée infused with galangal. Went here for lunch and would not come back. My friend ordered pad thai which was overcooked and mushy. Her shrimp in the pad Thai was not fresh looking and didn't look like it was cooked correctly. I ordered the lunch noodles and curry. The flat rice noodles were extremely SWEET and mushy. The curry broth was good however it had avocado in it, a HARD carrot that I couldn't even cut or bite into. And the whole bowl was LOADED with onions. We let the server know and Maurice kindly returned the dish for another one. The roti appetizer and drinks were the only thing good. Maurice informed us the manager would stop by and when the manager did, all she asked was "Would you like anything else?" She did not say anything else.
