Makiin kept popping up into my life like I was destined to go there. Social media, anecdotes and recommendations. After many postponements and schedule changes, I finally made it there. The sings were right! From the ornate door greeting you, to the low lit elegant interior, the experience was smooth and elevated from the start. The staff were extremely attentive and asked about special occasions, returning with a personalized sign. They also took time to explain flavor profiles and nuances of the drinks and dishes based on palate preferences and pointed out that happy hour was still ongoing. These details made the dining experience so much more. And allowed for true enjoyment of the spectacular dishes. I had the harn blue gem, the famous diamond drink, and it lived up to the hype. It was beautiful and refreshing, sparkling inside and out. The crab pastries, watermelon salad and calamari were also delicious, being familiar yet more elevated than previous versions I have tried. I loved my main course of the salmon. It went so well with the curry and rice and the portion size was extremely generous. The crème brûlée was also unique, and the candy floss chocolate tree was epic and tasty! The complementary strawberry sorbet was also a nice touch! Dress code: minimum smart casual, would not look out of place with more formal wear Food 4/5: we got 2 of their appetizer symphonies, the drunken beef noodles, the chicken pumpkin curry, the majestic ocean symphony. The mains were all pretty good, fave was the noodle dish. Desserts were definitely the stars of the show, would come back just for those. Ambiance 4.5/5: beautiful ambiance, dimly lit but with lighting in the right places for photos, live show playing music, loud but still able to hear each other at the table. Service 4/5: service started off good, friendly, helpful and quick but took a really long time for water refill. Asked 3 times and still no refill. We came here for a triple birthday celebration--my sister, my cousin, and my other cousin. Three birthdays, one dinner, and a whole lot of food. I ordered the Majestic Ocean Medley, expecting something grand, something that lived up to its name. It had seafood, plenty of it, but was it truly majestic? Not quite. More like a respectable ocean medley. A decent ocean medley. But majestic? That might've been pushing it. Still, the night had its highlights. They brought out a free scoop of birthday ice cream for the celebrants--a nice touch, even if it was just a single scoop. It's the thought that counts, right? This restaurant has been on our radar for a while. I'm glad we finally stopped in. This is an easy five star review to the decor top-notch, the service is the greatest, and the food is simply amazing. I have to give credit to Jasmine, Patty and Ryan! They are all top-notch professionals! First off I called in and I get a hold of Jasmine and she simply the best. I cannot tell you how many times I fall into a restaurant and it's just the worst customer experience ever. You will not get that here. Jasmine is absolute professional knows how to work a phone. She gave me all the information I needed and even recommended some of her favorite dishes, which we tried. She really set the tone for the evening. It was quite refreshing to get a hold of someone who is quick on their feet and does a good job. Next, our waiter Ryan was absolutely amazing. His service was top-notch and had some great recommendations as well. Also, Patty stop by our table as well, and she was simply the best. Also, there was other Waitstaff that stopped by. I filled up our drinks and removed dishes as they were empty. I go out to eat every day probably twice a day if not more and great customer service is becoming a lost art so it was really nice to see these three go above and beyond. Food: the food is simply amazing. You can tell everything is freshly sourced and made to perfection. The drunken noodles were simply amazing. Every bite was full of flavor and everything was extremely fresh and just the best. My girls basil fried was excellent. Every bite was packed with flavor and spice I like. Two great dishes. The crab ragoon were also just as amazing. Made to perfection. Lastly, they brought us out two desserts, which were phenomenal. Coconut ice cream, and another sort of sorbet. They were both excellent! The decor is simply amazing. A lot of the things they have in this restaurant are brought over from Thailand. They really pay attention to detail here. Sunday high tea! 2 for $35. They had a few bite sized pieces from the menu. The best part was the crab Rangoon. Not sure what the blue tea was called, but that was actually a lot better than the lemon grass tea. You don't have an option for which tea. MaKiin is an "upscale Thai" restaurant located in the Hanover River Oaks development just across the street (westward) of the Whole Foods market off Kirby Dr. There is limited parking available Steel Street. I came for a large group celebration and was looking forward to the cuisine but ultimately left disappointed with the experience. To start, I think MaKiin is attempting to execute a "high-end", fusion'y version of Thai Food and I love the approach. The interior build-out and menu items seem to match this vibe and as a very strong lover of Thai Food, I was excited to try the food. Unfortunately, the flavors all seemed a little lost in the fanciness - and dishes were either overspiced in a bad way, or underspiced and bland. Sadly, my love for Thai food at its best is its perfect blend of unique flavors (sweet lime, minty freshness, zesty lemongrass, pungent fish sauce, savory garlic) that, despite its complex range, end up blending together perfectly to satiate the palette. This generally felt like it was missing from the dishes I tried which included the Pad Thai and Flavorful Drunken Adventure. The service also seemed a bit off; our group waited about 30 minutes before we got our drink orders. To their benefit, the drinks were done pretty well and definitely had a fun flare in terms of presentation and delivery. Overall, I want to support establishments like MaKiin because they're trying to push the envelope on a relatively humble cuisine. I admire adventure and exploration, but this ends up in the backseat when the execution feels like such a miss. The usage of fancy ingredients like Lobster, Crab, Short ribs, etc... ultimately feels off when it doesn't blend the fundamental Thai flavors that make Thai food so special. I didn't notice that there's parking close to the restaurant, so I ended up parking in the complimentary covered lot adjacent to the restaurant. It's a nice way to stay away from the sun during the summer. After parking, I crossed the street and made my way over to this upscale Thai restaurant. Ambiance (5/5): This is where MaKiin shines. It's a beautiful restaurant. A stunning bar is in the middle of the restaurant. With seating all around it. Beautiful murals. Definitely a date spot. Impressive all-around. I didn't use the bathroom while I was there, but I would imagine it's immaculate. Service (3/5): Taking care of a large group isn't easy. With that being said, the waiter never approached me to ask if I wanted anything other than water. And I was at the restaurant for close to two hours. I would have purchased a beverage, but ended up sticking with water. While that didn't happen, the water folks made sure to refill my water periodically. This was appreciated. We also had to track down a waiter to close out. Drinks (N/A): I just had water so not much to report! Food (3/5): For brunch, MaKiin features a buffet. My very first Thai buffet which was pretty cool. It's an upscale buffet, so you won't see the variety you'll find at a Chinese buffet (that we've all been to). Instead, you have your pick of 12 or so dishes. I love getting a good variety so I tried quite a few items: rice with raspberries, ginger chicken, drunken beef, dumplings, and Thai fried rice. And naturally, I came back for seconds. Out of all of the offerings, the Thai fried rice was my favorite. Overall, the food was solid. Just not worth the high price point in my mind. I've been wanting to check out this place so we came here for a group dinner. Reservation was easy by calling the restaurant. It's more of an upscale Thai restaurant given the ambience. The menu was on a tablet and I liked that it had pictures too. We didn't have to wait too long for the food to come out. We picked a variety of dishes to try below. Portion wasn't great for sharing. This was my first time at MaKiin but won't be the last. Was here for a friend's birthday dinner and the ambiance and food were amazing! They have a wide variety when it comes to their menu even including various vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options. Our server was great, describing each dish, answering any questions, suggesting cocktails, and letting us know crowd favorite entrees. I personally had the flavorful drunken adventure which is a vegetable and steak stir fry and 1000/10 it was soo flavorful and perfectly cooked! Can't wait to come back. I loved that they used a lot of fresh (not frozen) ingredients in their fried rice. I liked that it was chunky, meaning big pieces of meat and veggies. My first drink was the Harn blue gem and it was nothing like I've tasted before but it was very delicious and strong to me. I felt like it lacked flavor till I discovered that there was a sauce at the bottom of the plate and that really elevated the taste for me! Kin Dee is one of my favorite restaurants in Houston, so you can imagine how excited I was to try MaKiin. It has a very Miami, very CDMX vibe, flashy, kinda loud. The DJ was jamming and the service was fine. They go all out for special occasions if you're into that sort of thing. The drink menu is somewhat basic and limited. The food menu provides an interesting and upscale take on Thai. But the execution is where it loses me. Appetizers were good, I really enjoyed the curry carnival and the hot basil mussels. The Brussel sprouts were a bit too sweet for me, but I understand that some people like that. Then for the entree I ordered the Majestic Ocean Medley. Talk about disappointing. The lobster and scallops were severely overcooked, rubbery, and metallic tasting. This is completely unacceptable but especially for a dish priced at $60. My party and I had an extremely horrific experience here. We came to celebrate my friend's birthday, who is very allergic to coconut. We made sure the inform the server numerous times as Thai food uses coconut in a lot of their dishes. They brought out a complimentary birthday dessert that had coconut - unacceptable! The birthday girl tried it first obviously as it was for her, she thought it tasted weird, so the rest of the party tried it and we can 100% confirm there was coconut in the ice cream. We immediately asked for the manager to inform him of the exposure and he argued with us that the dessert doesn't have coconut, tell that to my friend's closing and itchy throat. They did absolutely nothing to make this right. I am highly disappointed because this is a very serious allergy my friend has. As a restaurant, it is 100% their responsibility to ensure all of their guests are eating safe food and they completely failed. The manager then said "give us your number so we can check up on you later".... Are you serious? Since our party was larger tip was automatically added to our bill: $77. Imagine paying someone $77 when they put your life in dangIt's quite unfortunate they couldn't admit their wrongdoings and it makes me wonder what other things are going on behind the scenes.... Makiin was amazing! I am so very impressed with my first time here. Their drinks were perfectly balanced, not too sweet but definitely taste the alcohol- I ordered the Pu Lae pineapple. I ordered the appetizer symphony- included watermelon summer salad, chive cake, Thai kick chicken, and another salad on a betel leaf? All were great- except the betel leaf- it's just not for me. Mains: Golden Tumeric Deep Sea ( whole fish ) served precut into cubes. The fish came out piping hot- dipping sauce for the fish was just mind blowing. Such a great combo. I was treating a friend to a birthday meal and we had ordered the creme brulee dessert. It was delivered to the table with an additional scoop of ice cream and a candle that the server said was for the birthday. We thought it was a nice touch, especially since the theatrics were really neat with dry ice making an ocean of fog around the dish. But I was pretty annoyed when I saw that they added the ice cream to the bill. We didn't ask for it, so that is really bad in my eyes, especially for somewhere that's trying to be high end. And what if my friend didn't like that flavor of ice cream? There was also a photographer that took our photo and surprised us later with framed prints. We were pretty impressed until she asked us if we wanted one for $20. Our server (Alex) and the manager were really nice and checked up on us, and I loved how our waters were always refilled. Overall, fun to visit if you're in the mood for something new, but not somewhere to impress with food specifically. I know these are challenging times for everyone. Restaurants are being particularly hit hard. However, I was especially saddened by my recent experience at Makiin. It's such a beautiful place with the most unique and beautiful plate, glassware, utensil, and overall environment I have ever seen. I was in there the other day for a take out and it appeared as if the soul of the restaurant had died. The atmosphere was dark, stale and old. The employees seemed on edge and flustered. And the service was extremely slow. There was one bartender waiting on the bar and the Entire restaurant. I recognized him from Eddie V's and I know him to be an excellent bartender. He was just a blurry being in constant motion. I may add that he was serving the bar and Holiday tables. Meaning each table had 6, 8,10 or 14 people. I could not believe my eyes. One person serving an entire restaurant. I waited far too long to be served, to receive my drink, and to receive my to go shrimp fried rice, which was delicious, by the way. I don't know about the future of Makiin. Restaurants are closing everyday in Houston and across the country. I wish them well. read more

The vibe in side was nice, the lights were dim and there was live music. Loved the iPads as menus since the restaurant is kind of dark. For drinks Everything thing we ate was delicious! I loved their elevated take on traditional dishes, my khao soi was served with a quail egg (which was delicious), and my friend's salmon was topped with caviar. It wouldn't be like me to go to a Thai restaurant and not get the mango sticky rice! I was yummy I just wish they gave more than a dollop of the coconut ice cream. We went there for a weekend lunch. The interior design of the restaurant is very... grand? Lots of decor, high ceiling. Almost felt like Las Vegas. But it felt super dark for a sunny mid-day. One word to express my dining experience here at MaKiin Thai... Exquisite. I came to MaKiin a few days ago was because a friend was looking for a place to host a birthday luncheon. When I first heard about the new All-You-Can-Eat lunch buffet on Instagram early this year, I was excited to try the dishes because most of menu items are out of my budget. But the artistic presentation and the atmosphere are worth a try. Considering this visit a sampling venue, I promised to myself not to pig out. I have been here before but only nibbled on 2 dishes as I was participating a celebration and didn't get to sit down with my guests to try the food. There are 11 items on the buffet line (see my pictures). The variety was great for both vegan and meat eaters. I eat everything, but I also scout restaurants for those vegan friends. MaKiin Thai is definitely a great place to start. There are 3 pages of Plant Based dishes. Here is a list of the dishes I have tried. - Purple Jasmine Rice - Excellent savory starch base. - Shrimp Tom Yum Soup - A lighter side of Tom Yum with small shrimps. - Tom Kha Soup - Coconut milk-based soup with halved cherry tomatoes, chicken and mushrooms. - Pumpkin Curry - Mild curry with jasmine rice. (my favorite combination) - Chicken Dumpling - Deep fried dumpling. Great for appetizers. - Papaya Salad - It's the spiciest dish I have ever tried. Whoa! - Stir Fried Veggies with Tofu - Great combination of kale and fried tofu in an awesome flavor base. Definitely a must-try vegan dish. - Tamarind Brussels Sprouts - Very sweet dish to my palate. Definitely vegan. - Pad See Ew - Flat rice noodles with chicken. - Beef Drunken Noodles - Flat rice noodles with tender beef. It has a hidden spiciness and lots of flavors. - Thai Fried Rice - Mixture of vegetables in this savory fried rice. Colorful presentation. I can't remember if there was meat in there. Looking at the menu tablet, I already decided a few dishes to try on my return visit. My rule to find parking is to arrive early. For the lunch buffet, the best time to get here is 11:25 and park right in front of the restaurant. read more

Best Thai restaurant experience in Houston: food is excellent, drinks perfect, and the ambience is first class!

Everything was delicious! Sister company of Kin Dee and they didn't disappoint. Made reservations ahead of time for a party of 4 on a saturday night. We were able to get seated right away. Started off with a drink and I got a Hua Hin Mango (tequila based drink and got it mild) and it was really tasty. Loved the rim of it and excellent mango flavor. Perfect girlie drink! We made it in time for happy hour so got the corn fritters to start and they were nice and crispy! Paired well with the thai chilli sauce. Also to start, we ordered the Thai Basil Mussels. Excellent and flavorful broth and plenty of mussels and cooked nicely. They do NOT skimp. The Soft shell crab papaya salad was very refreshing. Great crunch from the papaya, carrots and string beans. The Soft shell crab was also crispy. For mains we ordered the Flavorful Drunken Adventure (which essentially is like drunken noodles). Came with Fresh rice noodles stir-fried sliced angus beef with carrots, sweet red onion, tri-color bell peppers, baby corn, aromatic galangal stock, and whole young green peppercorn finished with fragrant Thai basil and crispy green kale. Very good! The crispy garlic chicken was also very flavorful and crispy. Would go great with some white rice. I really liked the Royal Pad Thai Delight. It included "Sen Chan" noodles combined with succulent lobster tail, spiced tofu, chives, bean sprouts, sweet radish, shallots, crushed peanuts, and chili flakes, all tossed in our renowned Pad Thai sauce, garnished with an egg net​. The noodles were cooked nicely and had that sweet pad thai sauce coated. Lobster was cooked well and quite meaty. The Majestic Ocean Medley came in a clay pot and included Casserole of poached lobster tail, scallop, crispy soft-shell crab, calamari, and bean vermicelli noodles. Enhanced with bacon chips, celery, green kale, and a zesty Thai mignonette. A seafood heaven essentially and excellent flavors in this dish as well. really great portions overall for the mains! For dessert, i recommend the mango sticky rice. Mango was actually quite sweet and the sticky rice was SUPER sticky (in a good way) almost mochi like texture and the coconut sauce that we drizzled paired nicely. I went for the weekend AYCE lunch and it was not a disappointment! FYI, make sure you have a reservation for the ayce deal. They have the classics such as pad see ew, tom yum and Tom kha soup, fried rice, brussel sprouts, pad Thai, curry, and papaya salad. The papaya salad is pretty spicy beware! For $30/person (at the time of this post) the food is pretty decent for the price. My favorite was the Tom kha soup and the curry! They arranged the ayce buffet style so you can get as much or as little as you want which was perfect for me. I ordered the butter fly pea ice cream after the meal which was so good. It wasn't too sweet which was a nice refresher after the lunch. The restaurant is nicely decorated and feels fancy. Parking is free in the garage nearby. The staff were very welcoming. MaKiin - Thai Near Me - Houston, Texas

I had the pleasure to dine at MaKiin last weekend to celebrate Houston Restaurant Weeks for 2024. We met at another location for drinks before our 8:30 reservation and then piled into my car leaving the others at the drinks spot. MaKiin has valet parking in front but also free garage parking below the restaurant which I took advantage of. The four of us were seated promptly and I noticed the swanky interior with a nice looking full bar. I liked the interior. From the $55 HRW dinner menu, I chose the crispy delight unleashed to start followed by the salmon royale for the entree and then the flavors of the East for dessert. The crispy delight unleashed arrived a few minutes later on an elegant small plate with crispy rice crackers and a covered bowl of dip consisting of minced chicken. shrimp, coconut and chili peppers. The crackers dipped into the sauce were very tasty. I enjoyed mine making it a good start. Next up was the salmon royale which was simply a piece of poached salmon cooked in a curry sauce on top of a bed of purple jasmine rice with cucumber slices in between. I liked this dish and it was more filling than it looked. For my taste the salmon was slightly over cooked. I would have preferred it cooked a little rare for taste purposes. That was my only noted imperfection. Perhaps the Thai way is to cook the salmon that way. Finally the flavors of the East dessert turned out to be the Thai version of crème brûlée which was very good taste wise. I enjoyed it and was glad I ordered it. Added to this was a small cup of hot tea with sugar cubes alongside. This served as a delicious palate cleanser. Finally our table service was prompt and professional. This is a nice upscale Thai restaurant that serves very good tasting food with an attractive presentation. I would be happy to return. read more
