I ordered Maki Maki to-go for lunch and was not disappointed. Food was ready so quickly and staff was friendly. They pack the box and soup extremely well so when you open it after a trek back home, the sushi looks like they just prepared it in restaurant. I got the 2 roll combo with miso soup and edamame, including the spicy tuna roll and the spicy scallop roll. The edamame is typical edamame, and miso soup is hot and comforting. Both rolls are so fresh, stuffed with fish, and full of flavor, a hint of spice but not overwhelming. I love their pickled ginger - the perfect, sweet/spicy palette cleanser. Great fresh sushi meal at a reasonable price point. It's a good amount of food that had me feeling pretty stuffed. Didn't realize they had blue crab rolls - will definitely be coming back to try it!

Service was polite enough, but wasn't provided with a tray. It's a unique concept: the first time that I've seen a different pricing for maki (cut rolls) vs handrolls, but it makes sense from a economics/labor-forward perspective - cut rolls require more manual labor from staff, and that has a cost. That being said, that does incentivize the purchase of their handrolls, which they tout as the "crunchiest" in NYC. The presentation of the handrolls is efficient and clean. The way they deliver on the promise of the crunchiness of their handrolls lies in the packaging. The seaweed is isolated from the rice and fish until the consumer is ready to feast, which has typically been the challenge of handrolls: we fight against the physics of humidity to enjoy handrolls at their peak level crunch. In this regard, MakiMaki succeeds in its task. The removal of the packaging proves to be simple and seamless: just two easy steps to remove and enjoy. The fish that I ordered appeared to be fresh, and the rice, still a bit warm, was cooked well. I'm glad I stopped in.

Stopped by last Thursday and ordered the Premium Lunch Special, which comes with 8 piece Yellowtail Scallion and a Grilled Salmon Toro hand roll. The sushi was fresh and tasty, but a bit pricey for what it is and not very filling.

I did pickup at MakiMaki for dinner and had a great experience! Service was fast and the restaurant was very clean! This is more of a quick spot to stop into or do pickup from vs coming for a sit down dinner, but the 5 stars are for convenience and taste. The toro handroll was my favorite, they really stuffed it with fish! The taste of the salmon roll was very fresh. The only thing that didn't really impress me was the spicy tuna handroll - it really didn't have any spice to it. It tasted good but definitely needed more of a kick! Would come back Tip: Yelp offers a free spicy tuna handroll with checkin!

Food: I stopped by here for a quick lunch pick up. I ordered a spicy California sushi roll that came with one salmon hand roll. I like their sushi rolls it always tastes fresh. I have bought lunch from here before and it always tastes fresh. I like getting their spicy mayo. Their staff is friendly. The ambiance is calm. 10/10 rec

Spicy Tuna Lunch Special (1 Cutup + 1 Handroll)

Conveniently located near Grand Central, this is the ideal spot for a quick work lunch in the city. On top of that, the sushi is always fresh no matter what day of the week it is. My favorite go-to is the Spicy Tuna Handroll, which features delicious and creamy spicy tuna perfectly wrapped in the crispiest piece of seaweed. It really is the crispiest handroll in all of NYC. The inside is modern but small with not much interior seating, but service is always quick and friendly for your to-go orders. It's become a weekly ritual for me!

I love a good Maki Hand Roll and Maki Maki midtown East usually delivers. However, this time (my first in a while) when I expected two lovely slices of fish (or ingredient) it was only a miniscule slice folded over! Yes. Sadly eating a mostly rice maki roll does not suffice nor warrant such high prices. It was a wee bit disappointing. Thanks for the fresh fish. No thanks for mostly rice instead of fish. Thank you for reading.

Once you walk in, there's a sign to where you can line up in to order the sushi. You can get a cutup roll or a hand roll. Don't forget to check in before you order, as they do honor the free handroll. The customer service can be improved quite a bit. I had to ask the same question twice and got an answer as it was mumbled and that I didn't quite understand. The third time, I got a non mumbled answer back. Not that friendly, but then again, I guess they don't have time for that as lunch hour there's tons of people. The sushi was alright. It is a bit overpriced, but what can you expect from a place in the city. The packaging and presentation were nice, but too much plastic is used, so it is not very environmentally friendly. There should be directions on how to unwrap the handrolls as my fellow colleagues had a hard time figuring it all out.

    Salmon Avocado Handroll

3.5 stars Causal sushi place near Grand Central. They package the hand roll nori so that it doesn't get soggy (like onigiri). I had the salmon avocado and seasonal tuna tekka handrolls. The salmon avocado handroll was good but there wasn't much fish and too much rice for the price. The avocado quality also wasn't great as there was some bruising. I didn't like the tuna tekka. It tasted soapy to me.

Still loving MakiMaki, especially this location, which is well-run and spotlessly clean. The hand rolls continue to be my favorite, but I have now also discovered the spicy seafood soup, which is a close second. Luckily there is no need to choose, because the three-hand-roll combo comes with a choice of miso OR spicy seafood soup (and edamame)! At as little as 20-something dollars (depending on what roll fillings you get) it really hits that sweet spot of balancing price and meal size/quality.

To drink, I had a Hot Organic Super Matcha Tea for 4.95. It was alright tea, and I wish teas were included in the price point, as otherwise, this place feels pretty traditional. In terms of food, I only ordered from the seasonal menu, so I'm not sure how the rest of the dishes are, but from what I had, I would go back for a light traditional meal. My appetizer was the Dashimaki Tamago/だし巻まき卵たま, or sweet savory omelet with daikon for $6.98. This came with three pieces along with a little dollop of grated radish. The pieces had a light sweetness to them along with a bit of savoriness. They were juicy and a bit bouncy while maintaining some softness. This was standard and good. My main dish was the $19.98 Beef Tan Tan Udon, or ground sirloin beef, spicy broth, baby bok choy, kikurage mushroom, scallions, and sesame seeds. While I have preferred udon from spots like Raku, the udon had a mild chew to it, and they were still good. The broth had a mix of sweetness and spiciness with a nice depth of flavor. The vegetables inside tasted fresh, and the meat added some richness. This was good as well. I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to go here, but the food was good. If you're in the area and looking for no frills Japanese dining in a more comfortable atmosphere at pretty decent Midtown East prices, I would recommend this place.

Very cozy restaurant and the staff were attentive and friendly. Luckily their service is very fast so my family and I didn't have to wait more than 10 minutes for a table in the back. I really enjoyed their niku udon. The broth was flavorful but not too salty. The menu offered a variety of options, all reasonably priced between $10-20, ensuring great value for the quality provided. I would come back to Tensai for some comforting Japanese udon noodles!
