We checked out the menu and found it a bit on the pricier side, so we decided to order two simple, cut-up California rolls. We ate in, and although the space is small, we came around 3pm on a Tuesday, and it was completely empty -- honestly perfect for us . We were greeted kindly and served right away. My son absolutely loved the California roll! He even tried the ginger and a little wasabi (which was a big deal for him!) and we enjoyed two Cokes . My son has a cognitive delay and is sensitive to overstimulation, so the calm, quiet atmosphere of this little restaurant was exactly what he needed. It made the experience so comfortable and enjoyable for him . The workers/hosts/cashiers were all incredibly sweet and patient. The girl at the register is not that friendly, very blah. We ordered the regular ($18) and premium chirashi ($26), my premium had the bluefin toro and ikura and the regular one had the regular tuna. They give out packets of wasabi that says real wasabi so it has a nice burn to it and it's not the artificial neon green kind of artificial wasabi from buffets. The fish tastes good, no complaints. We also had a nice show, got to watch the guy clean the refrigerated glass where all the raw foods are kept. We watched the spraying and soaping and squeegee-ing. They pack the box and soup extremely well so when you open it after a trek back home, the sushi looks like they just prepared it in restaurant. I got the 2 roll combo with miso soup and edamame, including the spicy tuna roll and the spicy scallop roll. The edamame is typical edamame, and miso soup is hot and comforting. Both rolls are so fresh, stuffed with fish, and full of flavor, a hint of spice but not overwhelming. I love their pickled ginger - the perfect, sweet/spicy palette cleanser. It's a unique concept: the first time that I've seen a different pricing for maki (cut rolls) vs handrolls, but it makes sense from a economics/labor-forward perspective - cut rolls require more manual labor from staff, and that has a cost. That being said, that does incentivize the purchase of their handrolls, which they tout as the "crunchiest" in NYC. The presentation of the handrolls is efficient and clean. The way they deliver on the promise of the crunchiness of their handrolls lies in the packaging. The seaweed is isolated from the rice and fish until the consumer is ready to feast, which has typically been the challenge of handrolls: we fight against the physics of humidity to enjoy handrolls at their peak level crunch. In this regard, MakiMaki succeeds in its task. The removal of the packaging proves to be simple and seamless: just two easy steps to remove and enjoy. Once you walk in, there's a sign to where you can line up in to order the sushi. You can get a cutup roll or a hand roll. Don't forget to check in before you order, as they do honor the free handroll. The customer service can be improved quite a bit. I had to ask the same question twice and got an answer as it was mumbled and that I didn't quite understand. The third time, I got a non mumbled answer back. Not that friendly, but then again, I guess they don't have time for that as lunch hour there's tons of people. The sushi was alright. It is a bit overpriced, but what can you expect from a place in the city. The packaging and presentation were nice, but too much plastic is used, so it is not very environmentally friendly. They have a decently priced two roll (cutup) special with a couple of good options, although there is an upcharge for several of the rolls. This eel avocado was a little bit underwhelming, the eel had tiny bones in it and the texture was rough. I'm used to having my eel tender and smooth, and this just was not it. I had higher expectations for the eel avocado roll, but I was still able to enjoy it because the flavors were good, just the texture was off. Miso soup and edamame were nice additions to the meal! Tasted like typical miso soups and edamame haha so not much else to comment on here. Overall, very fast takeout service and decent prices, and just the eel avocado roll was a little bit of a downfall. I love fatty tuna so this was a must. The shiso leaf complimented this fatty tuna well. Overall, I was very pleased with my dining experience.
