I really do enjoy this restaurant...the chic decor, the good food, overall a nice place to have dinner with your friends or a date night. The desserts, including the pot de creme and the coconut pie are fantastic, and will always be worth the extra calories. However, the green curry (the benchmark of most Thai restaurants) wasn't as impressive as other places, although the curry itself had a decent richness. Drink-wise, the daiquiri (a marker of a good bar) was sublime, although the in-house brewed porter was a bit unusual in its flavor. Not unpleasant, just unusual...I'm not sure if chilis enhance or detract from teh taste. I would come by again to try some of the more elaborate dishes, or to try their happy hour. read more

After speaking with the manager about my previous experience my bf and I decided to dine in. The food was delicious. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. It was definitely better to try the food fresh off the grill. My bf and I both enjoyed our Drunken Noodles and Pad Thai much more than when we got it delivered. We also decided to try the Crab Dip, it was so good! I did not get to try their Malaysian Martini, they were out of ingredients I believe. The server recommended Mekong Mule and it was a great choice. I forgot our servers name but she was amazing and attentive. We sat right next to the kitchen and while the open view was interesting it did get a bit loud. The atmosphere and music was good otherwise though. We will definitely return and recommend to this restaurant to other people. read more

It was a nice surprise to find out that they have opened a second location in DFW area, here in South Lake. This one offers a much bigger outdoor seating compares to the Uptown one, not like it'd matter much during the winter time since they don't have any heater outside. Besides that, still the same delicious food and great customer service. We had the wings for appetizer. To my surprise, it was served as a whole wing, instead of the broken up ones that you usually get anywhere else. The flavor was on point with a good asian touch to it. I had the pork ribs for the entree. The ribs were veryyyyy tender and full of asian flavors, not covered in your regular bbq sauce, just how I expected it to be and even more. And of course, I had to end the dinner with their ridiculously good mango sticky rice. Everything I have tried here has been excellent. Upscale Americanized Thai Vietnamese fusion. I think a little more Thai than Viet. Happy hour 4-6 I think on weekdays. And all day Sunday. So far the only thing I love here are the Thai wings. It could use a bit of lemongrass to give it a more refreshing take though. Overall, my go to appetizer. The basket comes with 4 big wings/drums attached normally for $7 (5 during happy hr). I ordered the shrimp pad see eww. It was okay.... I prefer it from an authentic Thai restaurant instead. The shrimp was very good and juicy though. The noodles.... All right. But the stuff they added into the dish that did not need to be there. Cherry tomatoes, lettuce? It's fine with its normal broccoli, (sometimes bean sprouts- that's more pad Thai), and egg. But not tomato!!! That totally threw me off and I did not like that. The sauce it was sautéed in... Okay too. Pad Thai.... It was okay. Drunken noodles. Good noodle and flavor. But once again. The excessive veggie lettuce. It's like they are adding all these extra veggies for fluff to make the dish look big. The appetizer sticky rice with eggplant sauce that is a placement for regular bread and butter at the table. My table tried it. None of us liked it or finished it, and it was TINY!! Smaller than a baby's fist. Idk how they thought this was a good appetizer for a table of 4. Also the sticky rice was dry. And the sauce was.... Lacking in flavor. If the rice is going to be plain, then the sauce should be flavorful. I actually hoped for something more towards bread and butter. Like a French bread with a small bowl of curry to dip or something. That seems cool and very Vietnamese style. A small thing of curry would be less expensive than eggplant purée possibly. Then we had the banana dessert. I enjoyed the dessert. But then again I love bananas. But the dish wasn't "wow." It was good and I finished it. My brother did not like it at all- mainly the pudding part. My sis was okay on it and ate some. It's something we wouldn't order again. Maybe just the caramelized banana, which was the best part and made the dish from eh to okay. And again. Since it's a more upscale Americanized, the prices goes along with it. But only by a few bucks more for your classic dishes. The special dishes did range into the 20s though and 30s. So... Not sure if I'll be trying the more expensive dishes. I will be back during happy hr for more wings though. read more

This restaurant is by far the best Thai restaurant. This is our 4th or 5th time and each time we leave satisfied and happy. All of the servers and staff are amazing. If you are a fan of beer or unique cocktails. They brew their own beer on site and make amazing flavorful cocktails. Malai is perfect for a date night or casual brunch, lunch or dinner. read more

I've always wanted to try this restaurant, but never had time to drive to Uptown. I'm glad they built one in Southlake, now it's super close. We tried the papaya salad for appetizer. It was refreshing and delicious. Probably one of the best ones I've have. They also gave us some sticky rice and eggplant sauce. My cousin liked it, but I thought it was bland. Our courses came out pretty rapidly, we ordered the drunken noodles and the iron pot green curry. Both dishes were delicious, I'm not sure which we liked better. One thing I would change though, is to have the rice on the side in the green curry. They serve the green curry with the rice in pot of curry. On my next visit, I want to try the duck curry and the Vietnamese ribs. Will come back! read more

My biggest advice.... Skip the meal and go straight to dessert! In my opinion, that's the only thing they can get right here! The ambiance is nice but they have "americanized" every dish and taken out thedelicious spices that make asian food so wonderful! We had a group of 5 that came here for lunch to celebrate a birthday. I called ahead and made reservations. They had the tables together when we arrived but they were dirty and we had to request they be washed after we sat down. We ordered several appetizers. The chicken wings were okay but undercooked. They also did not separate the drumette from the wingette so it was extremely messy and hard to eat. Satay, on the other hand, was over-grilled. One of my lunch friends is vegetarian so she ordered the Green Pappaya salad and specifically asked for vegetarian. It arrived cooked in fish broth and had to be sent back. The mains arrived and were beautifully presented. Another friend ordered medium curry and there was zero spice at all. She said "I wish I had my own spice bowl to season it myself. In the end she sent the dish back. Onaside note, the $3 roti was delicious! (Taste like fried naan) For dessert we tried several things and they were all delicious! The mango sticky rice smash was the biggest hit at our tsble while I really enjoyed the coconute creme pie. Also enjoyable was the banana pot de creme. To summarize... The waiter repeated the orders so was a disconnect somewhere. Third mistake, we both ordered desserts but I never received mine. This is a "WOW!" place! I was really impressed from the moment I got here, the decor is classy, the greeter was friendly and professional, and even during a busy lunch rush we were seated almost immediately. The menu at first glance was overwhelming with busyness, but after a few minutes it all made sense. I settled in on the Glass Noodles, which was served with Chicken, or you could get the vegetarian verion. I opted for chicken. The dish was amazing, seriously, one of the best noodle dishes I have ever had. I finished the meal off with a slice of Coconut Cream Pie. It was really good and had a twist to it over the traditional version of this dessert, it had shredded mango on top. So you get the idea, it was Coconut Macaroon Crust, Tamarind Caramel, and Coconut Gelato, toppes with Meringue and Mango. The service at this place is amazing as well, and they have a great system of helping each other and making certain drinks are filled, dishes are served at the correct temperature, etc. I rarely comment on looks, but I will since what I have to say is nice, these folks are all beautiful people, inside and out! Visited Malai again on my birthday. A previous waiter had mentioned that there was a "special surprise" if you visit on your birthday. I mentioned to our waiter that it was my birthday and he said yes, there was a surprise. I'm still not sure what it was - unless it was being told "happy birthday"! That was sort of disappointing. My daughter came to town because her father died on December 23. Her only request was to dine at this restaurant. I am a surgical nurse and get up at 445 am for work Tuesday through Friday. We opted to meet here after work one day, called ahead for seating at 540 pm and was told we would be easily accommodated. We arrived on time but was not seated till nearly an hour later. People arrived without reservation and were seated immediately. When I finally complained I was apologized to and told they were going to put two tables together (after seating SEVERAL four tops prior to this that just walked in). We were there before happy hour ended and was charged full price for everything regardless of their mistake. Our drinks were full price. The manager took the blame for his mistake yet did nothing to make up for it. I had to be at work at 445 again and arrived home at least an hour later than planned. I will not be back to this location. We will stick with our South Dt Worth location where they care about their customers. We had the pleasure to come in for a quick meal during a business meeting at the South Lake location. This was my first visit to Malai Kitchen and I was blown away by the hospitality we received from everyone there. There were so many dishes that remind me of my childhood, and I'm not from Thailand! I highly recommend this place for any occasion. The food was absolutely amazing! The manager did visit our table, and I believe her name was Taylor and I will never forget the warmth and care she expressed not only to us but all those around her. She is one of a kind! I will be back as many times as possible when I'm in this area. My hat goes off to you Braden and the rest of the Wages. Your staff at the Southlake location truly did you an honor and a service. Don't be misled by the name "Malai". This restaurant serves a variety of Asian cuisines (especially Thai and Vietnamese), more than just Malaysian food, like Satay. It's an elegantly decorated restaurant located at the corner of Southlake Blvd and Carroll, where there were a number of nice dinning places. I came in well after 1 pm, and it was still quite full. The bar was wide open for singles, but I preferred a table. And the usher was kind enough to look for one for me. The complementary stick rice wrapped in lotus leaf was a surprise. The dip (also complementary) was made out of egg plant and bell pepper. It was quite fresh. Since it was made out of vegetables, I found it a bit plain and not flavorful enough to serve as a dipping sauce. But I have to say it still had a nice smooth egg plant texture. There is a trick. If you also add some (not too much) of in-house sriracha sauce, it tastes very delicious. At least, it worked for me. My shrimp Pad Thai entree was quite visually appealing and colorful. At the top was some bean sprouts, which was dyed pink and yellow (like Cindy Lauper's hair). I have never seen bean sprouts in different colors before (except for its natural boring white). Hope the dyes are organic. The rice noodles were thin and mixed nicely with the sauce, which was rich, but a bit on the saltier side. Like the sticky rice, I would want it to be softer to absorb the sauce. One suggestion: I would like to see some shrimp on the top instead of all at the bottom. The service was good, and the decor was unique. I would try to make it back during their happy hours from 4 to 7. They serve some nice Asian inspired cocktail drinks, like Cambodian Daiquiri and Tropic Thai, for a few bucks. In addition, there are other very savory items on the menu, like sea scallops, sea bass, trout, lamb shank, and curry chicken. Prices are a bit steep, but you want good food, right? read more

I was excited to read all about this place thinking they use quality ingredients, and offer vegan/gf options. Unfortunately, when I ordered shishito pepper tempura along with a dish, I received just the peppers instead no tempura! The girl who took the order never gave me this information that if you order this dish gf then you basically miss out on the whole dish. When called to get refund on this, neither the help desk nor the manager were helpful!! They kept saying you ordered gf that's why, no apologies nothing! Why would I order a tempura WITHOUT the tempura batter! Or I would order something else IF you told me that this can't be made without the batter. Positives: Excellent service: I came here last Saturday (01/06/2018) for my birthday dinner with a group of 8. Our server (Addison) was awesome. It was our first time here and he provided excellent recommendations. Food came out in a timely manner, waters were refilled, and dirty dishes were quickly removed from our table. We couldn't ask for a better server. Amazing food: Each couple ordered appetizers to share w/the whole table so everyone could try everything. Thai Tacos - Each order comes with 3 tacos for $6.00. This dish was jam packed with flavor! The pulled pork was so tender and flavorful. It paired well with the pickled sprouts, cilantro, and the crispy wonton taco shell. I'd definitely order this again! The Sampler - This came with Grilled Chicken Satay, Imperial Rolls, Spring Rolls, & Vietnamese Meatballs. The chicken satay was dry but everything else was delicious! Probably wouldn't order this again though. Ahi Tuna Tartare (Larb Tuna) - The BEST dish I had here. The diced sushi grade ahi tuna mixed in w/the herbs and spices all paired well together. It was so refreshing. I've never had tuna tartare larb style before and I'll definitely come back just to order this dish again. For my entree, I ordered the Whole Branzino ($26). It's wok-fried with the head and tail on in a tamarind-soy moon sauce served with a cucumber salad and jasmine rice. The fish was delicious and the flavors were amazing. I don't know if it was worth $26 though, but it was pretty good. Negative: Cake policy: My wife called 4 days in advance to make a reservation for 8. They asked if it was for a special occasion and she mentioned it was my birthday. We asked them if we could bring our own birthday cake to celebrate. The gentleman who spoke with her made it seem like we were going to be a burden. He told her straight up that she can bring it, but their servers will not be providing service for it. We said that's fine, we can cut the cake up ourselves. We just ask for plates, forks, and a knife. He said normally they don't allow it, but he'll make an exception this time around. Ok? I got to thinking to myself, what kind of restaurant doesn't allow you to bring an outside birthday cake for a birthday dinner? During our dinner, a gentleman came by and asked to put our cake in the refrigerator. We told him we thought you guys don't offer any service for our cake. He said just the cutting of the cake is all they won't do. We were totally fine w/that. By the time dinner was over and the cake was served (by ourselves), the same gentleman comes back and says, "Oh by the way, you guys know there's a $15 service fee for the cake, right?". I'm like what??! No one mentioned any fee for bringing in a birthday cake. We were very upset about this. Luckily, the gentleman was nice enough to not charge us this time around, but said in the future, that's their policy. In the end, the cake policy is what turned me off. That's the only reason I'm not giving this place 4 stars. You want to charge me $15 to refrigerate my cake for 30-40 minutes? You must be out of your mind. read more
