We had a nice evening at Thai Monkey while we were in Roanoke for an event. The food was good. We started with appetizers and Tom Kha soup. The Thai dumplings were a hit - they were very flavorful with a thick rich sauce. For our main, we had mixed vegetables with tofu and Pad See-Ew with chicken. Both were tasty with ample fresh vegetables. Our server was busy but made sure we were taken care of. The atmosphere is a bit lacking. They have decorations on the walls and some garlands hanging from the ceiling but it lacks a welcoming feel. It trickles down to the dishes and utensils that they use for service. Although the food was good, the atmosphere made the evening feel a bit less special. read more

We literally just fled from here in horror. We ordered a Thai tea, crispy duck basil and a large tom kha. The Thai tea was good but slightly too sweet. The horror show started when the waiter brought out the soup tureen with tom kha in it. He placed it onto the table and two small cockroaches ran out from the bottom (he didn't see them). He then lit the Sterno and a dozen more rushed onto the table. We could see inside the bottom from the fire that a colony of roaches were crawling all over each other. This place WAS delicious! They are closed down for good! We tried to go sit and have dinner this evening! Sad to see them gone!

Service was good with drinks arriving quickly and food arriving nice and hot. But then the restaurant was just about empty at 6:00 on a Wednesday evening (our table to four and just two other tables). A couple of things struck me as odd at the restaurant. One was that the "placemat" was nothing more than a thin black unfolded napkin that when you sat a cold drink glass on it soon dissolved to nothing and with the slightest breeze (walking by) fluttered up. Second was that in the actual napkin napkin the only silverware anyone had was a fork. That just seemed odd leaving no way to cut anything served and no way to get up any of the sauces with noodles, other than to use the serving spoon which we did not want to do because we were sharing four dishes between us. In fact we had to ask for individual plates, which I have never had to do in any Thai or Chinese or other Asian restaurant. Those three things just felt like really cheap moves to us. On to the food. We all got small dinner salads which were complimentary and a nice touch with a nice dressing. Crab Rangoon was good, but not as filled as other places. Shrimp Dumplings were not what was expected, but were actually excellent. Larb Chicken was a good portion but lacked any kick at all even though we asked for it medium hot. In fact, that lack of spice was a theme across all of the rest of the dishes. We asked for everything medium because at other Thai restaurants we have been to an order of medium means a good kick and sometimes even too hot for some. Here "medium" seems to mean no heat at all, which leads to bland and in a couple cases flavorless. Ginger Delight - excellent flavor of ginger. Basil Fried Rice - pretty average flavor. Drunken Noodle - totally flavorless. Pad Ka Po - it tried to have flavor but just never got past bland. Thai Tea was well done. Overall, just lacked the punch we were looking for. Lesson for next time and for others is ask for more spice than what they consider medium and absolutely do not ask for low heat because we can't imagine how bland that would be. read more

I was really craving some yellow curry so I looked up Thai food near me & decided on this place; I have to be honest the name is what got my attention. I read the menu & decided to give it a go. It wasn't busy at all so we had the place to ourselves. It was all decorated up for Halloween. As an appetizer we ordered tiger eye or blood I'm sorry I can't remember the name, but it was steak cooked to perfection. It was delicious it came with a dipping sauce with chili peppers mmmmm so good. For my entree I ordered the yellow curry w/chicken & added pineapple w/level 3 heat. It was a little thicker than what I'm used too but it was delicious. Complimented with the white rice, ! Javier (bf) ordered the pad Ka Pao beef. It was also delicious but it had on egg right on top in the middle that I didn't taste. He said it was good. I also ordered a Thai tea that was very sweet & creamy, he ordered Coronas & when we asked them to put them in the freezer to make them colder they had no problem doing it for him. My companion and I got stranded in Dallas and decided to try Thai monkey. We thought it would be a good idea to go with our favorites of fresh rolls and Tom Kha. The restaurant is in a strip mall, but well appointed and clean. We were immediately greeted at the door by the host/waiter, who showed us to a table. The restaurant was fairly quiet, but it was a Sunday lunch when they just opened. I ordered the Thai iced coffee and was not disappointed. We then ordered the spring rolls and Tom Kha. We also decided to take a chance on the Thai dumplings. The waiter brought out a small side salad while we waited for our entrées, which was very good. The dressing was like a Tom Yum sauce and had a nice spicy flavor. The spring rolls arrived, cut into four equal pieces with a lovely peanut sauce. Interestingly, the spring rolls did not have any vermicelli, but instead had plenty of crispy vegetables that paired nicely with the fresh shrimp and the nicely spiced peanut sauce. The Tom Kah was very good and was loaded with chicken, mushrooms and red onion. This was one of the better Tom Khas I have had. The Thai dumplings were also very good, and are like your typical dim sum. We thought for the quality of the food and the niceness of the restaurant that the price was fair. If we are ever stuck in Dallas again, this will definitely be on our list since it is near the airport. read more

I have been curious about Thai Monkey for a long time and am so glad we finally stopped in last night for dinner. I'm gluten free and was hesitant on what to order. I had no issues at all, thankfully. The vegetable spring rolls and the cream cheese spring rolls were crunchy and delicious. My husband said the green curry is the best he has had in Texas. I liked the sweet and sour chicken. It was filled with fresh vegetables along with pineapples and tomatoes. The chicken was freshly cooked without that precooked/reheated taste you get at many other asian restaurants. The service was kind and attentive. Well, the food was average. Arrived at 6:30 and only 1 other person was there. Should have been a sign. A dreary interior decor IMO. No one to greet us and our waitress gave us the impression that we were a bother. The meal included a salad drenched in some kind of dressing but the white lettuce was much too bitter to eat and the waitress seemed offended that I pushed it aside. My meal Pad Thai, was fine but under spiced. My wife ordered the Lo-Mein, all the vegetables were mostly raw and she set them aside. The Broccoli more yellow than green. Excellent Thai food!! Wow- the ambiance inside was amazing! Beautiful decor which is a pleasant surprise given the very plain exterior! We ordered a couple of appetizers- the shrimp dumplings and crab Rangoon- both of which were delicious. I highly recommend the shrimp dumplings which have a unique taste and presentation. We had three entrees - Drunken noodles, Pad Ka Pao, and Basil Fried rice. All were very flavorful and delicious. Be careful with the heat level as at any Thai restaurant. A "2" is getting spicy and a 3 is there. I've never had anything higher than a "3" at any Thai restaurant except for a taste of a "4" which my wife had ordered, and the "4" was really too hot and I'm used to Indian food. We had "2" for the noodles and Pad Ka Pao, and a "3" for the fried rice which made it quite hot! Service was excellent- very attentive and timely. Enjoy- we're definitely going back. read more

So, we aren't coming from a deep background of Thai cuisine and can't speak to authenticity. We've eaten at Thai Monkey at least ten times and we've always been happy. Not sure where to start here but the food and service were underwhelming. Service wise, we did not get a warm welcome at all. After sitting and receiving our apps, had to get up twice myself to get napkins and the standard trio of spices (chili oil, pepper, and one other item). No big deal. Worst part was the server (male guy- probably owner) came and took the chili oil, etc up off our table and took it to another table. Didn't ask us or even mentioned anything at all. They must only have one set for the entire restaurant and apparently he thought we didn't need it anymore for the balance of our meals. Whatever. Had to send back one glass of water as it had quite a bit of lipstick from the previous patron. Gross. Food: basil fried rice was mushy and sweet. I think one other review mentioned the same. Pad see oon was flavorless. Pad kee mow was sweet. Panang was ok. Spring rolls looked over fried. Place smells like a mixture of fried food and Fabuloso cleaning product. Quick update. We were here 2 weeks ago and loved it. Tonight we went back in and shared the Pad Ka Pao. It was as good as before!! That's a very good sign to me. Either the same chef was there tonight or they have the recipes down pat, which produces consistently great food. At other Thai restaurants in the past, I've noticed the dishes can vary a good bit, depending on who's doing the cooking. This time, I left room for Thai sticky rice with mango. Amazingly flavorful dishes for reasonable prices. I've had the Thai green curry with both beef and chicken and it's probably the best version I've ever had. The chicken is better though. The crab Rangoon is very tasty (but sweeter than normal places). Almost like a dessert for me. The wife had various noodle dishes. Both have been good. Stopped in for a quick lunch. A cooler day so I wanted to try the chicken noodle soup. The broth was nicely seasoned, your choice of spice. I was surprised to see a chicken meatball in the soup. After eating here another 5-7 times, I honestly felt like this place deserves a higher rating. The food is always consistently amazing especially the drunken noodles and the yellow curry. Do watch out as the spice levels are stronger than advertised. We will only do 1 or 2 out of 5 whereas at other places, we will do a 3. When we dine in, the staff are absolutely amazing! We had sweet and sour chicken, beef lo mein, tom kha soup, and chicken and vegetables. The soup was not spicy at all and was too salty. The lo mein was salty and had an odd flavor. And the chicken dishes just weren't good. On top of that, there were trash bags piled up behind the bar so high that they could be seen right when entering the restaurant, which wasn't a good start to the experience. Overall, we were very disappointed. We had been looking forward to trying Thai Monkey, and maybe we caught it on a bad day, but it was way too much money for less than mediocre food, especially when there are so many other options out there. read more

First time my wife and I tried out the Thai Monkey, as a take out. BAM! AWESOMENESS! The food definitely lives up to the earlier reviews, and the article about the restaurant in the Community Impact newspaper. I feel like I just had a food party on our Friday night :-) We enjoyed both entrée dishes: Sweet & Sour with chicken and the Mixed Vegetables with chicken. One dish as a heat rating 1 and the other as a 2. Both perfect! And we could definitely tell the differences, subtle but clear. Sticky rice was good also, though just a nice base for the amazing blended flavors. We are going to do this food party again in the future. read more

Decided to finally try Roanoke's Thai Monkey for lunch. Based on write-ups we've wanted to try this place, but the exterior has always pushed us to go elsewhere. Today, after trying another closed Roanoke Cafe, we made the plunge! The inside is a bit dark and heavy, but reasonably nice, and shockingly, after a string of restaurants where loud music is 'the Thing', this place has very nice background music, and you can actually converse! However, unfortunately, either the heat was broken, or the thermostat locked, but it was COLD inside, I would guess about 55 degrees. Normally, this (cold air conditioning) isn't a problem in North Texas, but it was today with it being 45 outside. We ventured to order one sweet and sour w/chicken stir fry, and one ginger vegetable stir fry. A nice surprise was some free spring rolls with a small salad, part of a November promotion. The spring rolls were very good. The sweet & sour stir fry was excellent, with a good quantity of peppers, pineapple, carrot, and more. It was basically were the antithesis of my other recent Asian restaurants where I seem to get little vegetables, and lots of rice. This was really, really good, and the spice level was exactly what I ordered. The vegetable stir fry entree was not as good, mostly because there were not enough vegetables. This was my wife's order, so I apparently transferred this issue over to her. There was also wayyyy to much garlic and cabbage in her meal. She said it was good, but she didn't finish it, but tasted some of mine, and agreed that her entree was something she wouldn't order again. In conclusion, I would have given Thai Monkey a 4-star, but based on my wife's entree, and the relatively higher price of this place (two entrees cost $30) for lunch, I lowered this to 3-star. We will go back one more time and see if the heat is turned back on, and re-try some other entrees, and make a final decision for the future. We haven't found many good Asian restaurants in North Fort Worth, so we have to keep an open mind. read more
