I went to Malibu Taco recently for my birthday. It was a large group of 15 of us and we went on a Sunday for their brunch. I had reached out prior to going and made reservations as well as asked about bottomless drinks, and the manager accommodated all of it. I've been to Malibu twice... would frequent more often if I lived closer. Both times we enjoyed our drinks, apps and tacos. Although the restaurant is small, the atmosphere is inviting and cozy. Staff was very friendly, attentive and accommodating. Margaritas were delicious! Chips and guacamole are a definite, chips are thick and crispy. I'm a fan of The Sinclair, so when I heard the owners were opening a SoCal-inspired restaurant just around the corner, I was intrigued. I ordered a margarita, the true test of an establishment's bartending proficiency. It was very good; you could taste the tequila while not being overwhelmed by citrus. The table shared the Tropical Guacamole; who knew citrus mixed so well with avocado?! If you're going to start with the classic app, I encourage you to try this fruity variation! The Grilled Corn (also offered at The Sinclair) was delicious as always, and the Sweet Potato Tots were the far more flavorful relative of your typical shoestring sweet potato fries. My friend ordered the Malibu Beach Quesadilla which was the biggest surprise of the night. If Colony made quesadillas, this would be on their menu. Picture a pizza that has tortilla as a crust and the cheese, shellfish, etc. is on the top. It's pretty big, definitely large enough to share if your appetite isn't ravenous. My friend commented that the shrimp was especially fresh. I enjoyed the Roasted Pork Empanadas (three are served) which were pretty standard. Our server was lovely and perfectly attentive. Prices were on par with other Downtown Fairfield restaurants. My one suggestion would be to offer dinner napkins or at least large disposable napkins. I had high hopes for this place because it looked so good... unfortunately everything I had was awful. I had the portobello taco, chipotle shrimp taco, and the chorizo taco. Not one of them had any flavor, the shrimp was chewy and didn't have much sauce or seasoning in it, the chorizo did not even taste like a chorizo and the mushroom tasted like they just threw it in there raw. I'm not a picky eater whatsoever so I'm confident that this was just lazily put together. Went there about 2 weeks ago, on a Friday night. After a short wait, found a spot at the bar. Nice bartender, who made an average pineapple something drink. Looking around, it was a nice atmosphere, but didn't have the character or true authenticity of BarTaco in Westport. And, the food wasn't even close. We ordered a few tacos which came soggy, flat on the tray and bland, bland, bland. They we inedible in my opinion and said the same to the shift manager - who seemed indifferent. I told him that people may come for the drinks, but won't return for the food. I find it hard to believe that these other 5 star ratings are anything more than the owner's friends or waitstaff posting comments. I was there last night with my fiancé. Wait was not too bad during dinner hours. The ambience is amazing and looks very appealing. I feel the seating was not done properly for the tables as when I was at my table which was very close to the bar; the entire their was a group that was at the bar pretty much hovering over us and their butts were in our face while we tried to eat. Truly no respect for space. Food: The food overall is very mediocre. Truly over priced for the portion of the tacos you receive. Pricing to quality is nonexistent here. I order 4 tacos (Nashville hot- missed the mark on being spicy, Baja fried fish-good but nothing special, shrimp chipotle- this was blend and flavorless, and sirloin steak-meat was tender but no flavor). My fiancé had a chicken bowl. The presentation was beautiful but a. Undercooked brown rice b. Chicken had no flavor c. Was filled with dark meat only. The ratio of protein in the bowl was not worth its price point. Sadly the sweet potato tater tot's were really good. But not worth returning for. Drink: My fiancé had ordered one of their mock tails. I had a sip of it and wow please do not be fooled by the presentation of things at this place. The drink was bitter and sour. Was not enjoyable for her at all. Was very excited to try Malibu Taco. In short, it feels like Bar Taco's red headed stepchild. Atmosphere is cool if you want to Instagram where you're at. Oh my god do my fiancé and i LOOOOVE this place! Both him and i are sober so unfortunately when we go out to dinner there's always a looong alcohol menu, but this place - not too bad! First time we went there i had the gracias madre mocktail with all the delicious blueberries in it and a burger.... now i wanna go there JUST for the mocktail because it was by far the best I've ever had! Really cute spot right next to Webster bank. We tried the guacamole sampler; classic, bacon and corn, tropical, and sweet potato. The sweet potato and bacon guacamole was our favorites out of the four. I would have preferred for each of them to be in individual bowls. We also had the chicken buffalo quesadilla along with a mix of tocos. They have a huge variety of tacos to choose from. We went with portobello mushroom, salmon, tuna, and steak. For happy hour they have four tocos for $10, half off quesadillas and tequila drinks. We decided to try their mocktails which were really good. read more

This was my second time at Malibu Taco. I got the Chicken taco, the pork and the ahi tuna. The chicken taco came practically refrigerated. It was cold to the touch, and regardless of that had no flavor, despite being described as spicy. The pork taco was so greasy that when I picked it up a waterfall of fat dripped out of it and then the taco broke in half before I could eat it due to sogginess. The ahi tuna taco tasted unfresh. The buffalo cauliflower taco was fantastic. The cauliflower fundido was the texture of humus and had a strong onion flavor-- wouldn't order again . The spicy cucumbers were delicious - crispy, fresh, refreshing but spicy at the same time. I will be back to order a whole tray of the buffalo cauliflower tacos & more cucumbers. Decide to try Malibu taco after hearing mixed reviews and boy was I pleasantly surprised! Margaritas were on point! Like many others said, wait time was long so don't come here if you're in a rush. The half greens and rice chicken bowl was amazing! Don't even know if I can ever order anything else here. Chips a guac were yummy. Blatant ripoff of BarTaco. Duck taco very bland Chorizo in the Chorizo Taco was basically inedible. Guacamole and chips were tasty. Gazpacho not bad. Cucumber salad not very good Tuna Poke was ok. Our server is the very first thing I wanted to mention. I didn't get her name but she had a hoop nose ring and beautiful blue eyes. She was phenomenal! Maybe it was Sienna? On a busy night she was at our table checking on us multiple times and attentive to us the entire time we dined there! The food was delicious! Love the new place in Fairfield! Awesome vibe, great food. It's brand new but service could use some work. We sat down and were promptly greeted and ordered drinks and the guac sampler. Three different orders came over to us that were for other tables. Our guac sample came before our drinks, even before water. Now.. the guac sampler comes in one big bowl... not separate bowls for each type of guac. So all flavors ended up mixing together which was odd and wouldn't work for a table of people with allergies. When drinks came, one was made wrong. Then one entree came while the other three had to wait. SO service was not great but FOOD was fantastic. All tacos were phenomenal, drinks were great when made right, and the open face quesadilla (aka personal pizza) was great. I'll be going back !! read more

The app (guac with bacon and corn) was okay, but the flavor was lacking and the portion size was small. I ordered Buffalo cauliflower tacos. They were good, but I don't handle spice well (not their fault). My eyes were watering and we ran out of water when our food arrived so we didn't have anything to drink during our meal. Worst restaurant experience I have ever had. Waitress told me bottomless brunch included food ordered. My friend heard her say it also. I ordered it. She gave me the bill and it was wrong. She charged me for all drinks and food. She then corrected the bill a second time and it was wrong AGAIN! This time she charged for 2 bottomless brunch's and my friend had nor ordered one. Third correction still wrong as she charged for bottomless brunch and food she said was included in price. She was extremely rude throwing the checks at me each time. She was clearly stupid. They will lose so much business based on a 15 overcharge with rude incompetent staff. I will say go some where else there are so many great restaurants in Fairfield. I went to Malibu for a drink. So I cannot really comment on the food, other than seeing a couple of guys next to me that ordered a small pizza and a couple of tacos each that looked ok and they said that it was just ok. This clearly is a place that does its best to sell its Fairfield location and decor. It has a nice outdoor seating area and a small bar inside with soft lighting and pastel colors. One of the nice things is that there are two large bay doors that they leave open during the warmer months, so it has a beach type feel to it. I think that the concept is to "make hay while there's sunshine" for the warmer months, because that is the atmosphere with the open air feel to it that makes the environment. And that leads me to my main complaint. This is the absolutely ridiculous drink prices and young bartenders who have been given a script to defend it, mostly touting the location and the aforementioned things as if I am comparing it to a bar in Seymour or Waterbury. I am not. I live in this area and go to a lot of places around here, sometimes just to explore. I have been to Sinclair, Geronimo, Post Road Tavern, among many others. I received my check for two Herradura Whites with Lime Juice that were a measured pour and ran $17.50 each. I asked the price for a Corzo and was told $14.50 and went along with that until I was told that they were out. I was told that Don Julio was the same as the Herradura. Both are decent, but certainly not top shelf and I would normally pay something like $9-12 around the area for a similar drink. There is one local establishment that uses Herradura Blanco as their well. I think that Geronimo actually does too. According to the bartender, they have the standard 3-6 happy hour with 1/2 priced drinks like Sinclair and PRT have. And maybe that is why they raise the price so high for the rest of the time. But to me, the drink prices at this place seem exorbitantly priced. read more

I have eaten here three times. One was on the patio and two were take out. The dine in and take out seemed to be from two completely different places. Aside from the slow service, the dining on the patio was decent. This made the take out more of a disappointment. We ordered one of the family combo meals - four types of tacos, chips and salsa or for an extra $3.95 a small guacamole and a dessert of the day. I assumed the "platter" would be as it is pictured on the website. Reality was plastic tubs holding the taco fillings and foil wrapped mini taco soft shells. Okay I get that no one wants mushy tacos. So we made them. The ahi tuna was decent flavor, and then it went downhill. The Chipotle Shrimp looked like they took some paprika sprinkled shrimp and dumped them on a can of corn. This was not "corn salsa". There was no "crema". The chicken taco was a chopped fried patty - very chewy and flavorless - again the accompanying ingredients were lacking - it literally looked like another can of corn. And then the steak - it was grey and flavorless. There was maybe one mini slice of pepper in the container. It was a waste of calories to eat these. I was bringing this home expecting the same - or at least close - dining experience at least flavor wise I had on the patio. Sadly, this was a disappointing train wreck. The best part of the meal was the chips which were good - thick, crunchy and the Wright amount of salt, and the dessert was good - I think it was a tres leches cake. It was light and the cream with it was good. Overall I was very disappointed with this take out. Another thing that was very annoying was the addition of a 20% tip automatically inserted on the bill when you go to pay. I understand that this has been a tough go with the virus but to automatically add a tip to takeout is beyond presumptive. Because of the virus, I adjusted it a bit and left it. It was my understanding that tipping is for SERVICE. Putting food in a bag doesn't really qualify for that. I know there will be pushback but call me old fashioned but I do not expect to tip when taking out. But I did. I will not do or recommend take out from this place. It just wasn't appealing to look at and more disappointing to eat. I might try the patio again but even that is in doubt. The margaritas are good though... I like supporting local restaurants and businesses but it has to be better. read more

I went to Malibu with a group of 4 for dinner and drinks on Friday night of Thanksgiving weekend. We had been eyeing Malibu since before it opened, but this was our first experience there. To be honest, a big part of why we waited so long to try it were due to the initial wave of very mediocre Yelp reviews (at the time of this review, the restaurant still only has 3.5 stars on 33 reviews). After a couple months, we started to hear some positive word-of-mouth accounts of the food, so we decided to finally give it a try. When we got there (around 6:30), we were told it would be about a 30 minute wait. This was no problem for our group (we frequently eat at Bartaco in Westport and experience wait times much lengthier than this) and quickly got 4 adjacent seats at the bar. I would say our service at the bar was the only aspect of our time at Malibu that was less than excellent. Considering the bar area wasn't very crowded, it seemed like the whole process - from ordering a drink, to receiving it, to finally paying for it - took a bit longer than necessary. This is a small complaint, though, because before we had even received our drinks, our table was ready (only 10 mins after putting our name in with the hostess). We tried 5 of the signature cocktails between the 4 of us. I found the Malibu Marg to be sweeter than I tend to like my margaritas, but the spicy watermelon marg was excellent, as was the Smoke and Mirrors cocktail. Our waitress was very attentive and friendly throughout the meal! We got a large order of the classic guac and it was incredible! The guac itself was chunky and fresh and the house-made chips were perfectly crunchy. The large order was a good portion for the 4 of us. I am noticing that the menu the restaurant currently has on their website has numerous differences to the one we ordered from last night, so I'm not sure if they make seasonal changes or if it just hasn't been updated to reflect what they currently offer. My fiancé got the salmon bowl and another friend got the salmon entree. Both greatly enjoyed their meals. These two dishes came out about 5 minutes before the tacos and our waitress (and other managerial staff members) were extremely apologetic, though we were not upset by this delay. Now for the tacos. Truly almost all of the ones we tried (about 8) were excellent. The sole exception was the Bacon Cheeseburger taco, which was only ok. The pork belly taco and the seafood options (shrimp, tuna, cod) were, by far, the highlights. The tacos were small (same size as Bartaco), but it was clear the quality of ingredients was high and the flavor was great. Overall, we had a great experience at Malibu and we will definitely be returning. Hopefully this review helps bump up Malibu's Yelp rating, as it is surely more worth your time and money than the current rating suggests. read more

I personally love this spot for tacos and their open face quesadillas are so delicious. They have the best happy hour Monday-Friday from 3-6PM. Their tacos are 4 for $12 and it isn't on the website but they let you know. I never had an issue with them and their food is so delicious.
