My gps took me way off the path! Once I arrived, I realized that had actually eaten here years ago. Here for lunch and found a decent list of lunch specials around the $7 range. I asked the waitress for suggestions. I went with her first recommendation, Chicken Oreganata. It was okay. Too bland for me but I doctored it up with some parm and salt. The biggest disappointment was the vegetables in the dish were notably purchased frozen. The lunch special came with a salad (mediocre) and fresh, hot bread (the best surprise of the visit). Service wasn't the best as the waitress often passed but infrequently checked on me. My biggest complaint is that they only offer bottled water and fail to tell you this when you order water. Cost $1 and then as many additional bottles as you like. Doesn't make my list of places to return to. read more

I am down visiting family and when we pulled up, I didn't have high expectations...Being from Chicago and going to a LOT of Italian restaurants up there, I figured this would be mediocre at best...WOW WAS I WRONG! Everything was delicious! Started with the fried ravioli which were perfectly cooked and then went on to entrees ranging from chicken marsala, fettuccine alfredo, to pizza. I can honestly say, I have never had a better chicken marsala -- my mouth is salivating right now thinking about it. The alfredo was perfect -- nice balance of flavors and not too heavy/gloppy like it can be sometimes. And the pizza was very good too. A thin crust that held up to the ingredients and also wasn't covered in a ton of sauce with fresh sausage as a topping. So, came in to eat tonight (2/12/2014) and had the pasta mama d's and added shrimp. The pasta was on sale for 8.99 as the special but at regular price it was 11.99. I see on the receipt that the pasta was 24.99. I asked at the register if that was correct and the lady checked with a gentleman and he confirmed the price. So your telling me that it cost $13 or $15 to add the 6 to 9 shrimp depending on which original pasta price you choose? So we are talking $2 a shrimp? That is absurd. This restaurant had a very noisy environment which immediately turned me off from the place. Our order included pizza, fettuccine Alfredo, and lasagna. Our pizza crust was tough and hard to bite through and the fettuccine Alfredo had a very little amount of Alfredo and was not that good. Our waitress also seemed to not want to help us and failed to do her job correctly. (She only stopped at our table 3 times) also the prices were outrageous. We paid 65 dollars for food that wasn't that great. Overall the place was loud, had poor service, and was way to expensive for the amount of food we got. read more

The restaurant choices are limited when we visit the this area so we gave Mama D's another try based on other people who say it's great. On our third visit we found that their lasagna is very tasty, so I believe their red sauces are the best choice. The wine and creamy sauces have not been to our liking in the past. This place seemed to arrive on the cusp of Calvert City's cultural "awakening"i.e, allowing beer and wine service. I've been here twice in the last few years when visiting family in W. KY. While not quite pedestrian, I have not had my socks knocked off yet. My parents love this place and am much happier to see them spend their money here (mom & pop) than the OG. The garlic knots were very good with a salad. The Italian wedding soup although it had a good base, was way too salty. The very nice waitress took it away and I had the cheese stuffed ravioli with marinara sauce which is what my husband had. The pasta was perfect and the sauce was great. We're visiting from out of town, and this was a good local place to go. I was expecting just a local pizza joint (since Yelp classifies this as "Pizza"), but this was much more of an Italian restaurant! I was surprised and fairly impressed. In fact, I went there thinking I wanted pizza for dinner, but most people in the restaurant were eating pasta, with a few eating what looked like some kind of stuffed pizza. Nice, friendly, hard-working service - all the way from being greeted at the door to the open view kitchen to the server at the table to the young lady that ran the register. We ordered spaghetti and meatballs and stuffed shells with meat sauce. Everything came with a nice salad (just iceberg lettuce, though) and hot-out-of-the-oven bread (which the server said they made there). It was all pretty good! I was much happier going there than some chain restaurant. The only negative was that it was pretty loud in the dining room - all hard surfaces in the open single-room dining room with a lot of people dining in (which says something about how good it is), with two large parties. My bad experience at this restaurant was my own fault. My experience has taught me that you should always order the local specialty. If you're in Chicago, order pizza. If you find yourself in Kansas City, order the barbecue (or a steak). And if you're in western Kentucky near two lakes where everyone fishes, try a hole-in-the-wall the locals recommend for great fish. But don't look for great Italian food in a small rural community with no Italians. I have eaten in Brooklyn and Chicago and south Jersey. I know what good Italian cooking tastes and looks like. This is not it. If you think Chef Boyardeee is good, Mama D's is fine. There was just no taste to the food at all. And there was nothing else to cause the restaurant to stand out--no hot bread you just had to have more of, nothing other than the same old salad you can get at any restaurant., etc. As another reviewer also noted, the restaurant has decided to charge for water. Mama D's does not have a license to serve beer, wine, or alcohol, so your choices are iced tea (sweetened or unsweetened), carbonated sodas, or paying for water. I drive past this restaurant every time I'm at the Land Between the Lakes. I've never even been tempted to go back in.There are some interesting and inviting places in this area to have a fish sandwich or a fish dinner (or even BBQ). Went here with my wife and grown son last night, as I had heard a lot of good things about it and wanted to give it a try. What a pleasant experience! No it's not fancy...but the Chicken Scarparielli and Marsala were excellent. Everything we had was good...but the homemade bread was just great. We will be back for sure. Worst pizza I have ever had. Not only did they make the pizza incorrectly (not according to the menu) the pizza dough was raw. The staff was absolutely rude. They ignored our table and we were the only ones in the restaurant besides the staff. We could hear the staff talking badly about customers that were there before us. Here for some work for three nights and while this area isn't filled with great restaurants and food I really enjoyed my Fettucini Alfredo (with chicken). Coming back from Eddyville (where there is nothing to eat sadly) I recalled a coworker bragging about this place. So we got off at Calvert City and got a pie. We had garlic knots as an appetizer, which were smaller than I expected, but they were also inexpensive. So it's not really a complaint. They were good with some fresh herbs tossed over them (oregano or basil). Girlfriend & I got a supreme, pizza was good, toppings were overlapping, sauce was a little sweet, crust was tasty.
