We came on a Sunday for lunch and were seated immediately. Pork sisig is so good. I haven't had pork sisig in the states, but I loved it here. This is a very popular dish in the Philippines and it was perfectly balanced here. It comes on a sizzling hot plate and has a good balance between meat and cartilage. Well flavored, crispy, and not salty. Garlic rice is good. It's flavored with fried garlic and not salty either. This pairs well with the pork sisig. Palabok was good as well. Dry noodle dish topped with boiled egg, boiled pork, tinapa flakes, and a few other toppings. Good mix of flavors with lots of noodles. Service was excellent. We got the pork and the squid/pusit sisig. I've gotta say that the squid is my favorite after the bangus. So crunchy and full of umami! Reminds me of oyster sisig in Two Seasons Boracay. Normally pork is my go-to but Mama Fina's turned my head. Just be careful with the spicy option for sisig - it's on the spicy, straight-chili side! If you're looking to end up in a food coma after a meal, then you've definitely come to the right place. Mama Fina's New York not only serves traditional Filipino fare (which is typically rich in pork, pork and, well, more pork), but it does it exceptionally well. For anyone not in the know, this location is the 2nd such restaurant of the very popular and much-hyped Mama Fina's House of Filipino Sisig in New Jersey. And thank the lord they finally came across the river! From the moment customers walk in, they're met with 3 giant chalkboards of the menu. Unlike conventional restaurants, you don't take your seat first and then order. Oh no no no, Mama Fina's likes to switch it up on you and have you order first at the counter/bar and THEN you can take your seat in their spacious restaurant. Not only is the menu large (literally three 5 foot chalkboards), but it is packed with Filipino restaurant favorites - Filipino breakfast rice dishes (served all day), traditional noodles, sizzling cast iron entrees and misc. a la carte pork and vegetable appetizers and entrees. Since it was our first trek here, we thought we'd go all out and order what was perceived to be the best of the best. We easily could have ordered a few more dishes, but we're human after all, and could only devour so much in one sitting. So without further ado here's what we went with: LUMPIA SHANGHAI An appetizer I've ordered at every Filipino restaurant I've ever been to and they made as good of a lumpia dish as I've ever had. The lumpia was extremely crispy, just the way I love them, and there was plenty of tasty pork filling inside. A must get to start off your meal. The only downside was that 5 pieces came in the order, so remember, sharing is caring! LONGSILOG, TAPSILOG, TOCILOG We ordered 3 breakfast dishes just to see how each meat tasted. Technically, we didn't share, but I had a chance to try a small piece of the marinated beef in the Tapsilog and the tocino in the Tocilog as the Longsilog was my primary rice dish. Verdict? The pork sausage in the Longsilog was a definite winner. The sausage was sweet and was very flavorful. The tocino was also really good as well. The meat was tender and juicy. It wasn't a clean sweep though as the marinated beef for the Tapsilog was the disappointment in the group. The beef was over cooked and just too dry. The garlic fried rice was also not what I was used to as it was a bit stickier than I've had at other restaurants, but nevertheless still not bad. PORK SISIG Crunchy. That's the one word I would use to describe the uniqueness here. Typically when I've had this, the dish was actually sizzling and full of meat on an oval cast iron skillet, but Mama Fina's likes to just do things different. The sizzling sound was missing along with the oval skillet. Instead, it was served on a mini round skillet. The crunchiness of the dish was interesting and I'm not sure if I came away a huge fan of it. The pork was tasty, however the crunchy bits kept getting in the way. CRISPY PATA The ever iconic Crispy Pata. When you see it for the first time, you'll be wondering what the heck did I get myself into, but pretty soon you'll find out that this behemoth of a pork hock is mighty delicious, albeit a bit dry in spots.Typically, there's plenty of fatty meat on the Crispy Pata, but I felt this one was a bit leaner. Whatever meat that was on bones was flavorful though. LECHON KAWALI Lastly, the Lechon Kawali aka fried pork belly ... and it taste as good as it sounds. Typically, Lechon Kawali can be a bit dry, but not the ones here. Mama Fina's might make the best Lechon Kawali I've ever had! The pork belly was juicy, tender and very fatty. It very well reminded me of the Chinese version of fried pork belly. There was a total of 10 pieces so there was plenty to go around on our table. MAMA FINA'S ICED TEA As for beverages, we figured we'd get something unique to the restaurant, so we ordered the homemade iced tea. Be warned, it is served in a gigantic beer mug so be prepared to make more than 1 restroom trip if you're going to drink the whole thing. Basically, it was a sweet version of an Arnold Palmer and was refreshing. When we first arrived at 6pm, the restaurant was pretty much empty, but as the evening wore on it got crowded. There were still a few empty tables though so even on this comfortable Friday evening it wasn't at capacity. As stated earlier, customers order at the bar/counter and the food is brought to their table. The bill is also settled at the bar/counter as well. The employees were friendly inside so no complaints there either. Overall, I can definitely see why people rave about Mama Fina's, but the prices are a bit high in the city. Avocado shake was bitter and I think it with banana. Super pricey too. I like that they have really unique items that you probably wouldn't find at most Filipino restaurants or even outside of the Philippines such as the baby crab in the picture you can see, it was OK, the batter was very similar to a batter used in the Indian pakora and was pretty thick. the lechón was slice differently than typically, and is a very fatty cut, there wasn't much of the crisp elements or any of the Chris elements to be honest. I wish they had a fried chicken, the style where it's not breaded and the skin is fried to a crisp. Upon entering, you order what you want from the board above. You also pay as you leave at this same counter by the entrance door where you checked in to order. Food was okay. The sisig (pork) I think must have some mayonnaise because there is some ingredient that binds it together to scoop it out of the hot pan. It is brought to you sizzling - as I captured it in my photo. Although the pork sisig was not the usual recipe I am accustomed to, the crunchy pork skins in it saved the day. The laeng or laing- a vegetable supposedly made with taro leaves; but I don't know if this was taro leaves; was cooked in coconut milk, ginger and some shrimp was good tasting but may be something new for others which may need some introduction. I liked the taste. I wonder if it can get cooked less? The shrimp on top was over over cooked. I wonder if they can garnish it with freshly cooked shrimp cooked in the same coconut and ginger mixture but removed before they get over cooked and dry. I like the hot chili peppers on top though. The one server does not pay attention to my waving of hand to ask for something. Eventually, I had to get up and ask for something near the counter where I caught the chef. Restaurant looks smaller on the outside than it really is. Nice gentleman at the bar answers all questions and makes suggestions. Diners are asked to order, as they come in, from the blackboards. Lots of good choices. We enjoyed the lechon kawali (it was quite a bit fatty but had a very nice crisp and good flavor), the BBQ pork on skewers (very tasty and tender), and the pork pancit (lots of veggies). We also had ube ice cream for dessert. Staff is very quiet but accommodating. It is not cheap Filipino food. Seriously, set one up already.-- It's a Filipino thing. Full disclosure: everytime I've come here, I haven't had to pay. Is this what being a gold digger feels like?... not bad. Most of the clientele seem to be actual Filipino people. I get the sense that their food harkens back to their tropical youths. The menu is pretty easy to understand, basically pick a protein that's gonna be fried to a crisp and smothered in cream. They should do a collab with Krispy Kreme. All other dishes should be ignored, their presence seem to be a courtesy (like ordering fish at a diner). You can't go wrong with pork. It's fried pork and a creamy gravy. It really is just that and doesn't have to be anything else. You can taste the dryness of the pork but that's usually compensated by the cream. A dark horse protein choice is... the milkfish (I wish they served horse for the sake of a pun). I can't tell you what a milk fish is or whether or not that milky taste is from the fish or the cream, either way, it's good. My only criticism is that it's smothered in garlic. Yeah no, this is coming from someone who orders extra garlic paste with all his ramen. They serve Filipino beer and their house iced tea is the bomb. For my ghetto brethren, it tastes like Chinese Food Iced Tea but in floaty form. A lot of the other reviews state poor wait times, but that hasn't been the case from my experiences here. I've only been here once, however, it imbedded a truly wonderful impression on me. I've been wanting to go back ever since. We got the Bangus sisig, the best I've had. It smelled so good when it came out that I couldn't wait to devour it. The deal was to get halo-halo on a hor summer day. I ended up getting pork sisig with garlic rice and one order of turon. The pork sisig and garlic rice was delish. It was crispy and tasted magnificent. I was a bit disappointed since I was expecting it to be served on a sizzling plate topped with egg. The turon was cooked perfectly. Crunchy in every bite. Surprisingly it did not burm my tongue which has been the case for freshly cooked turon. The portion is good for 3-4 people. I have not seen halo -halo serving size this big. It's genormous. I didn't realize this place was here since there are a few filipino restaurants on 1st Avenue. Definitely make a reservation if you have a lot of people! This place gets packed. And the restaurant makes you preorder if you have a large group. It definitely makes it easier because the food just started coming out. But you can just keep ordering at the front if its not enough food. The portion sizes were smaller than I expected. Lumpia (like a spring roll but skinnier and crisper) is a good app to get. Of course when you get filipino food - you have to get the sisig. I tried three different kinda of sisigs - pork (obviously), squid and bangus (fish). These sisigs were extra crispy - but you can't really taste the flavors as well. I think I liked the bangus the most. The lechon though were crispy in a good way. Another standout for me was actually the taro leaves in coconut milk. My favorite was the Halo Halo (dessert) which was massive. One person could not eat that after having a full meal. I've not been to the NJ location but heard good things. NYC location just opened 7 weeks ago as the date of this review. We were going to a show and decided to give them a try. You walk in, stare at the boards and order by the bar. They will bring you the food. The kitchen is semi-open to the floor. Filipino food isn't the best for this style of cooking, especially for sisig. So expect to come out smelling like food. But the back of the restaurant does have a garage door and the front opens up. Guessing during the summer, an advertisement of that sweet smell of fried chopped up pork and vinegar. We ordered the spaghetti with fried chicken and a longsilog. The longsilog has a touch of pineapple sweetness in the marinate. Not unusual but interesting. Rice is well made. Spaghetti combo isn't Jollibee sweet, pasta al dente, hot dogs and cheese. Chicken is also well made, crunchy but missing a flavor by itself. Get the combo unless you like your chicken plain. Mama gets a recommendation from me. Ambience I like the cheesiness. The decor doesn't know what it wants to be. It's a halo-halo concept which is genuinely Pinas. The place looks like Mama Fina's took over a former bar-live band space in the Lower East Side. By the door, the menu blackboard is a good idea because it gives the feeling of revolving menu based on season. And maybe later a better curated music will help the restaurant have a better feel. Service This definitely needs a lot of improvement. As soon as I came in there was a line to order, cafeteria-style. I wanted pork sisig and karekare but I was told they run out of the latter. To me that's good indication that the kitchen doesn't make too much of a dish and each dish is prepared everyday. After I ordered the lady told me to find a seat. Since I was the only one I went for the counter and realized instantly that it's a bad idea. I have been seating for sometime yet I wasn't given my water and utensils at all. I have to ask two servers and twice for both. In fact, food came first before I got my spoon and fork. Right next to me, a leftover platter of sisig looked as if it's been siting there for sometime. With it was an unsightly tall used beer mug, it's melted ice a sure sign that the busboy has forgotten it was there. The place obviously needs more servers and a better system should be established. Many times while at the counter, I saw and overheard customers from tables rush to the counter to remind crew of forgotten orders and stuff. It was seasoned well, and its texture was similar to that of meat, so I double-checked the menu. The garlic rice was also good, but palabok and a marinated fruit dish weren't for me. The flakes on palabok were crispy and the rice noodles went well with the sauce. I think maybe it would've been better to have it in summer with cold beer. The restaurant was clean and the atmosphere chill. You have to order at the front counter, but the waitress brings the food to the table, and you pay at the counter when you are done (they don't bring the check to you). Very disappointing. My fiancé and I wanted to try this place since he's Filipino. He did enjoy kare-kare, but my grilled pompano was very overcooked and burnt. The service was the worst part - it's essentially non-existent. We had to order at the register in the front and had to go upfront to go get napkins, etc.. This is the East Villages well kept secret. The food is amazing but you can always get a seat. You make your initial order at the counter which is a little weird but you then sit at a table where the servers bring you your food and take any additional orders. Called to make a reservation for a larger party (11 people) for a Friday night. They were able to accommodate my party but asked for our orders to be placed before hand, so I called the day before and placed everyone's orders. The lumpia shanghai very crunchy and flavorful. I got the tapsilog breakfast plate. The beef was marinated well, on the dryer side so the vinegar that came on the side definitely helped. Most of my party got Sisig, I felt that the chicken was the right amount of flavor and very juicy. The pork one is all pork belly and the skin definitely gave the dish a great crunch with every taste. I did find the pork one on the oilier side which my friends agreed with. The tuna sigsig was on the salty side and definitely fishy, if you're into that type of flavor then it's definitely for you. The garlic rice was good, not overwhelmingly flavored with garlic. The servers were nice. Most of us ordered the Mama Fina's iced tea which is a huge glass cup, it looks like milk tea, but don't be fooled, it's more of a lemon flavored iced tea with foam from it being shaken I believe. The space was much bigger than I expected for a easy village restaurant. All in all, the experience we had was pretty good, and we enjoyed the food. One of the best Filipino restaurants in America! - according to my boyfriend who lived in the Philippines half his life. Prices keep increasing but we keep coming back for their Pork Sisig, it is absolutely unbeatable. The flavor and texture from the sizzling plate gets me drooling every time I think about it. I'm not a huge pork fan and I hate greasy foods but the sisig at Mama Fina's is something I look forward to every time I'm in town. I pair it with garlic rice and *chefs kiss* it's fire. read more
