Roasted Chicken for Set 1
Jack M.

Stopped in for the roasted chicken and it did not disappoint. The rice was fragrant and perfectly cooked, each grain holding its texture without being dry. The chicken was incredibly tender, the fat rendered down until it was silky and flavorful. The sauces were outstanding and true to the classic Hainanese style, each one adding a perfect counterpoint to the rich chicken. The ginger scallion soup was a standout, pulling deep aromatic flavors from its vegetable base. At $14.99 for the portion, it felt like a very fair deal, especially in the East Village. Will absolutely be back. The service was friendly and fast. Warm. The space is clean and cozy, while remaining functional.

Having never been to the Elmhurst location, I didn't know what to expect. This hole in the wall location is right near St Marks. The menu only has three food items, chicken rice served three ways: steamed, crispy, and roasted. I went with steamed and crispy to go. The first thing to catch my eye was that they serve it on paper. It really gave an Asia vibe. I was worried it would leak through or become a mess but surprisingly everything was still packed neatly. The rice is flavorful. The chicken was tender and delicious. And even the radish soup was yummy. I just wished they had ginger scallion sauce. I'll definitely visit again.

The portions are generous and the prices are very reasonable for Midtown Manhattan. Over the two visits, I tried both versions of the Hainanese chicken rice, and both were delicious. The food came out incredibly fast, and I especially appreciated that the meals included Chinese broccoli. I also tried the stir-fried noodles from Hainan Jones and that was excellent. Overall, everything we ordered was flavorful, satisfying, and served quickly. Definitely a great spot for a casual and tasty meal in Midtown!

The chicken was very tender, well prepared, and so were the veggies. I think it has stiff competition by way of Lou Yau Kee but is definitely up there as top 5 southeast chicken rices in the city! I would def come back here and what's great is that you can feel healthy bc it's steamed/poached chicken, rice and veggies :) It's inside Urban Hawker, so you can get a variety of other things to go with your meal - might I recommend Kopi (malaysian coffee) at the nearby stand? The flavors were bold, authentic, and the chicken skin was silky smooth. The cucumbers had a nice crunch and the veggies as well. They give you two sauces, one of them is spicy and might be hotter than you expect so try it first.

Known for their chicken rice, my group, and I ordered some of the house chicken, roasted chicken, pork belly, and a few other goodies, such as the Kalamansi limeade, char kway teoh, and Asam laksa. The chicken rice come in a cute paper packaging, a good portion of food. House chicken is moist, roast a little less so. Only thing lacking are the sauces. The ginger chili sauce is given in such small amounts and isn't flavorful enough to give that oomph chicken rice has. The Asam laksa I would skip, it's nothing to write home about. Char Kway Teoh has that good wokhei flavor and we rec. The teh Tarik and white kopi were quite watery so I'd skip that too, but the limeade was great!

Found a heavy hitter in Elmhurst. Eim Khao Mun Kai is…read moredoing one thing, and they're doing it better than anyone else. If you're looking for a massive menu, keep walking. This spot is a 3-table operation focused entirely on perfecting Thai chicken rice--and they nailed it. The move here: The Chicken: Poached to absolute perfection. Tender, juicy, no fluff. The MVP: The chicken heart. It was so good I had to double down and order a second round. If you know, you know. The Rice: Fragrant ginger rice that actually has flavor, paired with a radish broth that hits the spot. The Sauce Science: They let you mix your own. I went with the soybean paste + ginger-scallion combo. It's addictive. Do not skip the ginger-scallion. Washed it all down with a solid Thai tea to balance the heat. It's a tiny shop with efficient service and zero ego. A total hidden gem. I'll be back. 81-32 Broadway, Elmhurst #ElmhurstEats #QueensFood #KhaoMunKai

I am always a fan of these hyper specialist places because I figure if you only sell one dish it must be really good. The chicken is tender yet light on flavor, so the included sauces (one soy based and one chili sauce) are a must. However the rice was delicious and fragrant, a complementary pairing to the chicken. They also included some chicken gizzards and liver if you are a fan of those, but for me I could do with or without. Overall a solid place and worth a repeat visit in my book.

They were crisp/crunchy and not soggy at all. + good portion for two people - soup was too oily - rice could've had more chicken flavor infused - I was looking forward to the string beans, which is what was advertised on the menu. It's a small hole in the walk place, however those are always the best too. We went early afternoon, it was quiet but more time to figure out what to eat since we were hungry. Appetizer and our entrées were delicious. Before your food arrives, you are served a hot drink and a small bowl of white potato soup. Our appetizer was soft, crisp, with the curry sauce. Our entrées were a great portion, made to perfection. There were only two people working, the chef who is mostly behind the scenes getting through the kitchen and delivering the food up and our waitress were a small team. Our waitress was very friendly, attentive each time she came over to see if we needed anything or checked in to ask how our food was. At most, you just need to look for parking in Flushing. Since it's right by main street, it can ge extremely busy. I recommend you park elsewhere, and take the walk going to Betong Hainan Chicken. It might be hard to miss from the outside, just look for the restaurant carefully. All major credit cards and cash are accepted. Great food, friendly staff, looking forward to our next visit back.

It is a cozy spot, but do not let the size scare you off because the turnover is quick and I have never had trouble snagging a seat during the lunch rush. Bring cash if you can because they have cash prices which are cheaper than their credit card prices. I am a creature of habit, so the steamed chicken is my absolute go to, though the fried version is a solid runner up. The roast is fine, but it is not my favorite. You really cannot go wrong with their ginger rice and the garlic ginger sauce. It is the perfect combo. Then there is the soup. This is the real MVP! It is so peppery and warming and I honestly wish it were bottomless. I would probably drink a gallon if they let me LOL I tried the curry sauce for the first time today for $5.50, and to be honest, I would skip it next time. As a Southeast Asian, I have had my fair share of amazing Thai food and this was a bit one note for me. It was mostly just coconut milk, spicy (heat), and salt and I really wanted those aromatics to pop, but they did not quite make the cut. Plus, it is just the sauce with no meat or veggies, so at that price, it feels a bit steep. If you are just eating plain white rice, maybe it works, but I would stick to the classic garlic ginger sauce. Despite the curry sauce experiment, this is hands down one of the better khao mun gai spots in NYC. I highly recommend giving it a shot, just go for the steamed chicken and be prepared to dream about that soup afterward!
