At first glance we weren't sure if we were at the right place. I believe this restaurant had a different name up until recently. Nonetheless, the food was great and the service was equally the same. My main complaint is the portions could be bigger when factoring in the price. The ambience is dive bar-ish. The bathrooms could definitely be kept up with a little more. But if we're talking food and service this place passes with flying colors.

Jerk wings and Oxtails. I promise you it's delicious!!

Word of mouth carries a lot of weight for a lot of restaurants and Mama Joy is definitely one of those restaurants.Don't let the place deceive you. Looking for some good, down home, soul food then Mama Joy is the place. Delicious homemade soul food cooked by Mama Joy herself. Attending a conference for work, a co-worker and I ventured out to Mama Joy's Kitchen after hearing about it from another coworker who was visiting with family the week prior. She raved about how delicious the food was so I made a point to put it on my list of places to visit while in town. Finding it was a little difficult. My GPS took me slightly passed the entrance. Once I got there, I saw a sign out front in the grass but could not find the storefront with the same name. It's located in a little strip mall not too far from where we're staying, So we went in and asked if we were at the right location and we were. Nothing much to brag about on the inside as far as the decor, but you will get some of the best homemade soul food in the area. I ordered the oxtails and the jerk wings and my coworker ordered the meatloaf sandwich. I got a side of Lima beans and some cornbread and Everything was delicious. I mean delicious!! I will definitely be sharing this gem of a place with others so they can try for themselves. Mama Joy stepped from behind the kitchen as we were preparing to leave and introduced herself to us. Sweet lady who we thanked so much for the meal. We told other patrons good night and went home belly full.

Food: I give this place a B+. The taste was fantastic, even the macaroni & cheese. My only issue was with the sides sizes. They are too small. If they gave about 1/2 cup more, it would be great. Service: A+. Friendly folks, just the right amount of attention. Ambiance: A. Cozy and charming.

Food was great. Piping hot and seasoned to perfection. More than enough food for now and some for later too.

The food and the customer service was excellent. Been a while since I've had comfort food that taste like a authentic homemade meal. The Oxtails fell off the bone and don't get me started on the gravy! My husband got the meatloaf which he said was the best he's had. My son got the Chicken fettuccine. We will definitely be back!

    Oxtails over rice!

It doesn't feel corporate or manufactured at all. More like you've stumbled into somebody's lovingly chaotic backyard dinner party where the food just happens to be genuinely top-tier. The mismatched charm, handwritten feel, and warm atmosphere are part of what makes it so special. There's this brilliant contrast between the laid-back hole-in-the-wall vibe and the seriously refined cooking coming out of the kitchen. We started with the fried green tomatoes which were incredibly tender, fried perfectly, and drizzled with a lovely house-made ranch. The sweet house pickles alongside were such a good touch. We also each had a cup of she crab soup which was beautifully seasoned and packed with tonnes of crab morsels. For mains, we shared the shrimp and grits and completely understood why the recipe has won awards, including being recognised as the 3rd best in the world. The recipe is rooted in traditional Lowcountry cooking but elevated with layers of flavour that somehow still feel comforting and homemade. The grits were unbelievably creamy, and the shrimp and sausage were perfectly cooked with fantastic flavour throughout. We also split the seafood purloo with blackened grouper, and it was equally impressive. Everything was cooked perfectly and tasted incredibly fresh without trying too hard to be fancy. What really made the experience though was the staff. Everyone went above and beyond. They took time to chat with us about the area, paced the courses perfectly so nothing felt rushed, and by the end we were leaving with handshakes feeling more like guests than customers. Places like this are getting harder to find. We'll absolutely be back and would recommend it to anyone looking for authentic Lowcountry food served by genuinely wonderful people.

The outside looks to be going through some renovation, but the interior looks like it's almost done. Open space, nice and fresh. You place your order at the counter (2 menus- one for dine in, one for take away) and they bring it to your table. We both ordered the chicken sandwich, one Nashville, one regular and made meals of it with tater tots and chips. We both had tea, though they had Coke products as well. The chicken was very freshly fried and delicious. Great taste. Both the tots and chips were also nice and crispy, plus piping hot. Couldn't ask for nicer or quicker service. We chatted with the owner/chef on our way out- couldn't have been nicer. Highly recommend and we'll be back to try other menu items (chicken dinners, shrimp and grits etc.). Plenty of 'southern' representation on the menu to choose from without being too greasy or over-the-top. This felt like home cooking in a trend forward atmosphere. Don't let the exterior discourage you from trying- you'll be glad you did.

Debbie and I stopped in about an hour before closing, not expecting much--just a quick bite. What we got instead was hands down one of the best seafood meals I've had in a long time. First off, we met the owner, Jim Scully--absolute legend. Friendly, genuine, and actually takes the time to sit and chat. You just don't see that anymore. Great conversation, great energy... set the tone right away. Now let's talk FOOD... * Fried oysters & shrimp - ridiculously good. Light, crispy, not greasy at all. You can tell everything is top quality. * Coleslaw - vinegar-based, shredded, and honestly reminded me of proper German kraut salad. Perfect balance with the seafood. * Soft shell crab... alright, this is where things got serious. "It was like a circus in my mouth... just an explosion of flavors." I'm not exaggerating. The texture was creamy, not oily, and the batter was just perfect. One of those bites where you just stop and look at each other like... yep, this is special. On top of that: * Everything is made with high-quality ingredients * Prices are very reasonable for what you're getting (honestly, some places charge double for worse) * BYOB (bring your own wine/beer = big win ) * Huge menu--seafood, ribs, BBQ, pulled pork, chicken, desserts... you name it Final verdict: (three thumbs up from Debbie & me) If you're in Hilton Head and even thinking about seafood--this is a hidden gem you don't want to miss. We'll 100% be back.

Surprisingly roomy with two separate dining rooms and a third with a bar and more tables. Service was quick, but a little too quick. Our appetizer, salads and entrees all arrived at the same time crowding our little table. We ordered onion rings to start. Let me tell you: these were the best I've ever had. Positively delicious. But no sauce!!! So I made my own with ketchup and hot sauces. Chicken picata was good. Chicken a Parmesan and crab stuffed grouper were also ok. Salmon was decent. There was a huge selection of sandwiches and some yummy desserts. We all had a good meal. A little pricey for what got. But I still recommend.

My husband is a sucker for spinach artichoke dip and we gave theirs a try. We both really liked it, but we were sort of fighting over it since there was so little of it. For our entree, the stuff was super accommodating and let us split the Italian beef sandwich. Points to the staff for giving me the plate with the pickle spear! Also points to the staff for the warning about the spicy giardiniara. I still got it and enjoyed it, but was still a little (pleasantly!) surprised. We each enjoyed our half of the sandwich. Very Chicago-esque atmosphere inside, surely to appeal to those traveling from that area, or who miss home. The food was great, the staff was excellent. Check them out if you're missing your midwestern food!

He said it was generally more of a local than a tourist place, though everyone is welcome. They share a large parking lot with a shopping plaza. It appears that there is a Publix going in soon. Also, some areas had signs about using a QR code to validate parking, but apparently those were not activated yet (and seemed unpopular with the staff). It was fairly crowded when we arrived (probably 9:30 a.m.). However, they apparently just expanded and took over the adjoining space (formerly a t-shirt shop). So though the 'original' booths and counter stools were mostly taken, there appeared to be open tables in the new space. Service was sort of tag-team; whoever walked by and noticed that you needed something tried to take care of it. That is in no way a complaint - it was an efficient system. We all ordered and had a short wait for the food, given the volume of customers. When it arrived, everyone liked their platters. I had a cheese omelet, bacon, and hash browns. All were quite tasty. The coffee was good too. Prices were reasonable. I'm not much of a 'breakfast out' person at home, but if I were on HHI for any period of time, I'd definitely go back here.
