Our last day of our vacation and my husband and I stumbled on a gem of a restaurant - Mama Leone's Pizzeria in Newport RI. They had a good selection of food items. We ordered a specalty pizza for the 2026 Superbowl. When we got it home, found that they gave us the wrong pizza, even tho it had our name on the box. It was a cheap cheese pizza. The Game had started. We called and they said they would credit our CC and to keep the cheese pizza. We had to throw the cheese pizza out, crust too chewy. After a week, there was no credit and we called. They again said they would credit us. Another week and no credit. We have lived in Newport for the summer season for sixteen years, and Mama Leone's is our GO TO PIZZA and take out place for ALWAYS. Their wings are great, the salads fresh and abundant, but it is THE PIZZA that knocks it out of the park. Consistently perfect. Perfect chew, not super doughy and heavy, but also not thin like a cracker...I've had those.... UGH. When I want pizza, I want crust, and I want dough; just not a sponge. Where do I start, or should I stop now? Unfortunately, Mama Leone's pizza was not good. We came here to try out the pizza, taking a break from all the bar food and over priced restaurants in Newport. Here are the two positives: 1. free parking and 2. plenty of space in their dining room to eat. Hmmm...why was it so empty during the busy 4th of July holiday weekend? Oh, I now why...the food is not good. Who I believed to be the owner (gruff middle-aged woman), was training another employee (young girl with false eyelashes) at the register. My husband questioned why the pizza was not on display like at other reputable pizza parlors. Silence...No response. We questioned the size of a small pie and the response was, "Are you hungry?" We were on our way home after the cliff walk when we happened across family friendly Mama Leone's Pizzeria. It's a clean, medium size restaurant with lots of indoor seating. Buyer beware. We made a mistake on the reservation date (made for Sat 8/29 instead of Monday, 9/1). Cancelled within 20 mins on the app and with a call to the restaurant. They still charged us $100 cancellation fee ($25 per person). We called the restaurant and explained and asked if we could get a partial credit or anything towards 9/1 because we wanted to go there. Owner was condescending and rude from the start and told me he was confused (not too hard to understand we clicked on the wrong date but still wanted the 9/1 reservation) and "too busy" to help. I grew up in a small business family and I do understand his point - if they didn't see the cancel they lost out on money they would have gotten if they seated someone there but they should have a better process to check for cancellations in the moment. We weren't even asking for a full refund but even a partial credit to come the next day (end of holiday weekend which I'm sure they don't have many reservations) and he wouldn't even answer my question and wanted me off the phone. So much for giving them our business they are clearly not in the business of service. To the owner or whoever called me back, you may regret this when you have empty tables tomorrow night at the end of a holiday weekend. Even if we had gotten $25 back we probably would have went and spent over $200 and you would have built good will and a loyal customer. Coming for an early dinner meant the order was ready quickly, and we received attention when we picked up the food making sure we had everything we needed. The pizza was great! It was deep dish style, but not too deep that it felt like all bread. Not greasy! The eggplant parmesan pasta was delicious, only complaint was the pasta didn't have a lot of sauce. Very friendly and helpful staff. Pizza was overall good. Sort of a medium type of crust. Sauce was tasty generous cheese but toppings were a bit sparse. The Caesar salad was HUGE. Fresh and amazing amounts of sliced Parmesan on top of the salad. Dressing was tasty. Plenty of seating inside with a number of TVs as well. Saturday afternoon, NBA playoffs, wife and I feel in the mood for pizza. This place sent out fliers since it just opened up and we decided to try take out. Over the phone, the people were really nice. We ordered the two speciality large pizza's for $26. We ordered the Portuguese Lover (Portuguese Sausage and Peppers) and the Greek (Feta & Tomato), we asked that the Tomato's be swapped for spinach since the wife has a dislike for tomato slices. 15-20 minutes later we drive in to pick up during half time. The store is clean, plenty of tables and at 1615 in the afternoon it is relatively deserted. There was one other couple there for take out, but other than that, it was just the 3-4 staff they had behind the counter. The place looks pretty trendy and would be cool for a pizza and beer. Paid for the pizza, nice quick service, pizza was hot and ready to go. Got home a few minutes later at the start of the 3rd quarter and grabbed a slice. If my opinion was solely on experience (minus taste), this place would be a solid 4. Here is what we thought about the food: Portuguese Lover - Its a red sauce pizza but it is done in an Italian style, light sauce, nice big peppers, sausage is there (I can see it), but the spice just doesn't come across. It isn't a bad pie, I love the crust, just I was hoping for some "umph" and I got "meh". The crust by far is the best part of this pie. Greek with Spinach vice Tomato - The white sauce is heavy on the garlic, which I like, but it is a light sauce so doesn't overwhelm. The Feta has a nice taste to it, but I'm not sure if it was just this pizza, but there was a lot of salt. Usually, I'm the guy who says pass the salt, but a little too much salt on this guy. All in all, better than a lot of the local places, for $26 for two large 14 inch pies, not a bad deal, especially considering some of the other places. However, so far I have not been impressed by any pizza in Newport/Middletown area, and find myself driving out to Warwick to get a decent pie. I believe with the right toppings, the pie here could be something really good, the crust is really good. I recommend trying it yourself and ordering something different, of the joints I have tried on this island, this is the best so far in Newport, just the bar for quality dining experiences in Newport so far is super low so beware. read more

One of our favorite hidden gems. When your in town for two months a season. You need a reasonably priced place to eat occasionally. That doesn't compromise on quality. The boneless wings are the best in town. Period. Big, juicy and well priced and offered with many dressings. Pizza and calzones, also are a superb value as are the salads. Throw in the BYOB and you can eat and drink at a fantastic price! I do think they need to go back to real silverware though. I realize some cutbacks had to be made when moving from the old destroyed business, to this smaller. Some sacrifices had to be made. But, can be tough cutting into pizza, calzones or anti-pasta with a plastic knife and fork..lol... Had the good fortune to visit this place again, today as an eat-in restaurant. The first time, we got takeout pizza before meeting a friend and her family at Easton's Beach in Newport. The pizza was good then, so we decided to try it again today before our trip to another Newport beach. We were able to meet the owner, who was so sweet and hospitable -and friendly to my twin girls. The pizza: delicious. The crust is on the thick side (think almost as thick as Pizza Hut pan pizza) but crunchy on the bottom, and generous with the toppings. The waitress gave us a frisbee to bring to the beach with us, and we were able to try their version of a cinnamon bun - SO GOOD. And - bonus: after we ordered, the pizzas were ready in around 15 minutes, so it was good for a borderline-hangry family. We will definitely be back! read more
