Chose to dine at Mama Mia's for a birthday dinner celebration a few weeks ago and unfortunately it was not as good as we'd heard. We were seated fairly quickly despite it being pretty busy and our server was quick to take drink orders, but that's where the speediness ended. Once we placed orders we waited at least 45 minutes for the food to arrive. The bread and lasagna were the stars of the meal. The bead is huge and comes out warm with a perfect amount of butter and garlic. The other entrees left much to be desired unfortunately. The chicken Parmesan was a hearty portion but the pasta and sauce were bland and it was served in a bowl which was hard to cut two large chicken breasts in without making a mess. The chicken Alfredo's sauce was also very bland but the perfect portion. The spaghetti with meat sauce was very meaty, which was appreciated, but again the sauce was bland. Date of visit: December 8, 2025 I haven't been here in literally forever, so when my original option for my anniversary lunch with my boss wasn't available, we opted to come here instead and had a great time. The meal did start out a bit rocky, we had been seated for quite a while before Kathy S made her way over to us, but once that delay was rectified, the rest of the meal was good. I had a Hawaiian pizza--that's one of my favorites and something I don't tend to get at home, and there's is quite good. It's nothing special when you think about it, no special sauce like some places do, but they make a good pizza and this one is no exception. Longtime enjoyer of Mama Mia's here, I've probably been housing their food for over thirty years. I love their crust, their toppings, their salad and, of course, their garlic bread. I stopped by recently because I was in the neighborhood and ordered my favorite: pepperoni, mushroom and onions with GB and house salad. Everything tasted perfect but wanted to note a few changes I noticed which perplexed me. When did these changes occur? Can someone please reply and let me know. Salad: 1) the cheese which adorned the top was cubed rather than sliced. 2) no longer are there wedges of tomato, now it is small diced tomato (canned?) We had never been to this location but grew up eating this pizza and bread. Made the decision to stop in and I'm so glad we did. It was everything we remembered and we'll definitely be back. The space had a retro/old school but neighborhood feel. The garlic bread can never be beat. While there are close impersonators--Mama Mia's is the GOAT. The pizza, thin crispy, with the perfect amount of a well balanced sauce and you can actually taste each of the toppings. Looking forward to coming back and diving into an order of the lasagna. OMG...We were in town for our sons Wheel Chair Rugby Event and had dinner here. What great food and service!!!!!!!!!! Linda our server was 10 stars. I had high hopes for this place, being that I am from a smaller city. We drove from about 2hrs away for a trip to the area and this was our first stop before our hotel. I had to use the bathroom and the hot water in the men's room didn't work. I feel like that foreshadowed our experience. All the previous reviews I saw recommended the garlic bread. We got the garlic cheese bread as our starter and for how much hype it had, it was just what the kids call mid. It was super buttery and oily. The basket that came with our meal had a pool of oil in it. I got the Baked Pasta and my wife got the Fettuccine Alfredo. There is only one word I can use to describe the food: Bland. They put shakers of Garlic powder, Red Pepper and oregano on your table instead of cooking it into the sauces. Our server was very good, and it was not awful, but it was not the kind of place that I would be racing to go back to. read more

Growing up in the Milwaukee area Mama Mia's was a treat meal for us. So I go whenever I'm in the area. A little bit of nostalgia and a whole lot of happiness in my belly. Went last week (01 March 2025). Tried to make a reservation, but they only do that for groups 6+. So we went at 7:30 because the hostess told me the later we got there would be better. Mama Mia's used to have more than one location. West Allis is all there is now. Usually do carryout. Great sauce, great lasagna, great spaghetti and meatballs. Best garlic bread i have ever had. This past weekend I had a hankering for chicken parm and haven't had Mama Mia's in awhile so I figured I would go right when they open at 11:00. I was the first one there which was fine and was greeted by Kelly the waitress who was super nice. As she brought over my utensils she brought a menu but I already knew what I was going with. I ordered a glass of Malbec and a ice water and when she returned back I ordered the lunch size order chicken parm with spaghetti. While waiting for my order I was presented with their famous garlic bread. Me and the waitress talked for a few minutes until a couple arrived and another couple about 5 minutes later. After not waiting long I was presented with my meal. This was a pretty think chicken cutlet and came out piping hot, good sauce with nice melty cheese. I got through almost all my garlic bread and a little over half my chicken parm before I had ask for a small to go box. I was thinking if I was almost full with the lunch size serving, there was no way I could've survived a dinner size portion. No doubt I would be back to eat here again or order take out. If you're into garlic bread, Mama Mia's is exactly where you belong! Their garlic bread is buttery, crisp, salty, garlicky and everything good (besides the high fat and calories--worth the splurge!). Please do yourself a favor and get this while you're here. We also got the Sicilian pizza. The crust is thin and crisp, and the toppings blended well together--although I'd say the sauce does not have any stand out flavor. The atmosphere is cozy. I'm knocking a star off because service was mediocre when dining in, wine selection is subpar. Also when we ordered for carry out; the guy taking our order was very very slow, and I hung up that phone call unsure if we were going to get the correct items (we did). Apparently they're starting this new thing where you have to pay the tax in cash but the rest can be on card. This also makes no sense to me, but whatever. We had cash anyways. Wanted to support Mama Mia's because we like the lasagna. Ordered takeout easily with their website. When I picked it up, I noticed most of the staff didn't have masks on in the kitchen, but everyone was very friendly. My order was ready quickly. The pasta sauce was rich and I loved the cheese ravioli. Heard the lasagna was great, as always. Mama Mia's: Tony Barbiere founded Mama Mia's in 1954, using authentic Italian family recipes originating from Calabria, Italy. I've had the lasagna before, but it was from a party pan years ago and not at the actual restaurant. I remember it being the best I've ever had, so I chose to go here for my family birthday dinner this year. The restaurant is a little tight/crowded with tasteful Italian décor. Things started off a little rocky as there was oddly no host present for a few minutes and we did not get seated until 20 minutes after the time of our reservation (which I made earlier in the week as we had a party of seven). For an appetizer we got the sampler platter and mozzarella sticks (which is what I had). The exterior of the sticks had some nice seasonings and the interior was packing plenty of cheese. I couldn't capture it on camera, but trust me when I say I got some serious cheese pulls. The sampler platter was supposed to come with mozzarella sticks, butter-breaded mushrooms, and Italian breaded zucchini strips. I wanted to try the mushrooms, but couldn't figure out which ones they were. When I asked the server she said they were out, so they substituted jalapeno poppers. This bothered me as we were not told this when we ordered or when it was brought to the table. We were only told because I asked and not being a fan of "hot" foods this was not a desired substitution. My entrée was lasagna that came with a large slice of garlic bread that was drenched in butter. The slice was thick, chewy, and full of incredible flavor. I'm not a big garlic bread guy, but this impressed me. My meat lasagna was even better than I remember. There was plenty of sweet and flavorful sauce covering the piping hot pasta along with large chunks of beef in the meat sauce. Of course the best part was all the cheese. A thick layer of it tops the lasagna just like a pizza. Anyone that knows me knows how much I like cheese and there was enough to keep me satisfied. For dessert I got the Tiramisu, which I am told translates to "pick me up" or "cheer me up" and it certainly did. Its origins are disputed to be from the Italian regions of Veneto or Friuli-Venezia Giulia. It is a coffee flavored dessert made with ladyfingers dipped in coffee or espresso, layered with a sweet whipped mascarpone cream, and flavored with cocoa. This was my first time having it and as a fan of coffee I loved it. In closing, the food I had was five stars, but the service could have been a little better. I'm trying to do my part in these difficult times for restaurants with the virus shut down and rotate through local restaurants and get take out, I can only do so much but I want to try. My first impression was WOW that's a big sandwich and my second was that's a beautiful sandwich. My first bite was like that's fuck%ng delicious and the garlic bread was really good. The garlic bread was fresh/soft and lightly toasted with a great buttery/garlic flavor and I can see why people like it in the reviews. Tons of tasty melted cheese with a nice amount of red sauce which I also liked. The chicken was the real deal breaded breast with an Italian style breading, not commercial crap that was moist and tender. WOW this really really nailed it and hit the spot for a chicken Parmesan sandwich. This restaurant was not good!!! We thought it would be based on its longevity. Maybe we should have ordered pizza. We ordered a chicken parm sandwich and 2 Sicilian chicken sandwiches and they all came out the same. The Sicilian chicken was supposed to have onions mushrooms and pepper's didn't come out that way. When I asked for them they brought me raw onions peppers and mushrooms warmed over on the grill. They should have been COOKED!!! The other two entrees in our party were just OK. Don't know how they have been in business that long must be the pizza. The service was nothing to write home about, when a server walks away after you've paid the check and she doesn't take your plate that's bad!!! first, everyone has preferences. if a place doesn't live up to personal expectations for what you like, it is a mismatch. Not good from the start. if on the other hand, a place has what you like but seems to be doing a bad job or there are execution issues from the kitchen with the food, then that is on them to improve....maybe new staff or a bad night. most places have standout dishes and others that are just ok. If your review was on the ok dishes, it might look opposite of the 5-star reviews. and of course, there are the troll reviews by competitors, which is bad and sad because the restaurant business is hard enough with small profit margins. new places often fail at 1 year and 3- years. that Mama Mia's has been in business with various locations and ownership groups back to the earliest in 1954 says they make a product that people like...generations of people. I grew up with it in my teens, back in the late 60's and 70's, then moved away from Milwaukee for school and work. When I get back to town I plan to go there for a meal....to get lasagna, garlic bread and salad. I'm living on the east coast, a lot of Italian food Here. This lasagna runs with the Thorobreds. It is comfort food. If you are on a diet or want health food, look at other parts of the menu. But I return for this. It always comes to the table piping hot and each bite blends the acid of the tomato sauce with creaminess of cheeses. A perfect bite. Some of the 1-star ratings floated the question: how can they stay in business? This famous garlic bread and lasagna is part of reason. I'm planning a trip back to visit family this summer and I'm making a list of things I want to do...Mamma Mia's, real authentic cheese curds, and Connie's pizza in Chicago ( before I return my rental car and fly out of O'Hare).
