Mama Mu's Bistro was a pleasant surprise. The restaurant has a cozy, casual atmosphere with great music and fun vibes. What really stood out was the service. We arrived about an hour before closing, and quite a few menu items had already sold out. Our server was incredibly attentive, kind, and genuinely apologetic about the limited availability, even though it was completely understandable given the time. He made us feel welcomed and taken care of throughout the meal. We ordered the Classic Trio, which includes an appetizer, hot pot soup, and a main dish. For the appetizer, we chose Mama Mu's chicken wings, and they were absolutely phenomenal. They were coated in garlic, fish sauce, and a delicious glaze that hit the perfect balance of savory, sweet, and umami. Easily one of the highlights of the meal. For the hot pot, we went with the tom yum soup. It was sour, spicy, tomato-forward, and packed with a nice amount of heat. My only critique was that the meat portion was a little sparse, especially since we paid extra for the wagyu beef. Our main dish was the Pad Thai, which came topped with an egg omelet, chicken and tofu. It was a solid Pad Thai--though not the standout dish of the night. For dessert, we ordered the mango sticky rice and wow. The blue rice was perfectly sweet, rich, and coated in coconut goodness. It was the perfect way to end the meal. Ok to be honest there is usually a line to get in especially on Weekends. At 12 we waiting about 30 minutes. Parking is really a bit of a hit or miss. Finding a nearby spot on Noriega is almost like hitting the lotto on Sunday. Service is a bit on the slow side because there was only one person doing everything at the front of the house. I am amazed he didn't go insane. Note there are really 2 restaurants here so depending on which menu you order from. I believe its Thai and Malaysian/Singaporean. I ordered the Bangkok $15.00. That's Sautéed ground protein of your choice with basil and chile. Even the "mild" has a bit of a punch. There is a side of blue rice that helps cut some of the heat. The rice is topped with a fried kind of over medium egg. Overall its a really good dish. Just be warned about the heat. The lunch specials all come with iced tea and tom yum soup. I had a bit of my Wife's soup...its really flavorful. A bit of sour offset by the earthiness of cilantro. There is only a single unisex bathroom, but its clean and well stocked. Let me clear this up in case anyone is as confused as I was -- Muan is using the same location and kitchen as Mama Mu's so the storefront outside says Mama Mu's but once you go inside, you can order from the Muan menu by ordering of a tablet kiosk. They're located at the same address of 1316 Noriega but Muan appears to be more snacks type of foods and drinks. Mama Mu's interior is cozy and clean. I did get a little hot inside eating their food. Now for the menu -- they have different menus depending on the time you go (lunch specials, happy hour) and I was a little confused from the old set menus that are still posted, even though they're no longer available. Once we finally got everything figured out, we decided to try the set menu $30: 1 appetizer: chicken wings 1 hot pot soup: tom kha 1 main dish: curry of the day From happy hour menu: Yen ta foh flat rice noodle with white fish -- this was incredibly bland. Our overall complaint is that there just wasn't a lot of meat in any of the dishes. Curry of the day had slivers of chicken. Tom Kha hot pot had chunks of bland pork slices. Thank god the wings saved the meal. Now the real issue is we felt like we got catfished when we ordered the Golden Emperor dish -- check out my photo and you'll understand. My daughter says they used AI to create this ad for the dish, which now clearly makes sense on how we were misled. We paid $80 for the total bill and we were still hungry and unsatisfied. Delicious! I was nervous to check out a Thai restaurant after being in Thailand, but Mama Mu's did not disappoint. We shared the Ayutthaya boat noodle, and there was more than enough to feed two. We actually left a bit. We ordered the medium spicy which turned out to be not very spicy so we asked for their hot sauce, and their chili oil was amazing. The meats were tender yet tasty in the soup. If I were to make a suggestion, the soup was warm rather than hot. It was your typical cool foggy summer day, and we were interested in a hot soup. We tried the curry of the day, Mama Mu's wing, papaya salad and Bangkok (pork)--everything was super flavorful and we really appreciated that the "medium" spice level is a true "medium"(vs. a mild level that we can expect from most other restaurants). I recently visited Mama Mu's Bistro on Noriega in San Francisco, which offers comfort-style Thai cuisine along with some Southeast Asian dishes. It is a small restaurant and one person serving the customers. It was not busy when we arrived during lunch hour. The person who served us was very nice and welcoming. It seems like they have some new dishes that are not yet printed on the menu, and these were shown on a tablet. They offer lunch specials as well as combination sets for two or four dishes. We ordered the set for two, which included tom kha, pad see ew, and crab rangoon. We also ordered the pork shoulder. The food took a while to arrive after we placed our order. This was a lovely Thai place that had a great welcoming atmosphere by staff and customers alike. My friend and I tried a couple of their dishes. The pork shoulder was tender and deeply flavorful, with a rick savory profile that made it satisfying. The portion size was smaller than we expected, and so it was a bit more costly for what we hoped we would get. We asked one of the owners, Ohm (sp?), for some recommendations. He suggested we try the Happy Hour specials, since this was our first visit. He's very nice and hospitable, but he was so busy rushing around trying to accommodate all the customers! They may need extra servers in the near future on those busy nights. ***OUR PICKS*** LAO PAPAYA SALAD ~ Fresh green papaya, rice field salted crab, tomato, anchovy dressing, Thai eggplant, green beans, garlic, red chili, fish sauce. Wow, spicy! My ears were tingling! It hit almost all the taste buds: tart, salty, sweet, and spicy. The papaya would have been much better if it had been shredded more thinly, so it's easier to chew. You can't eat the crab because they're too small, and sucking the juices became salt bombs in my mouth. Probably not a good thing if you have high blood pressure! I'm assuming the crab is just for flavor. 3.5/5 BOAT NOODLE (BEEF) ~ This soup was very different than anything I have ever tasted. I can't say I loved it or hated it; it was ok, yet sweet next to the other dishes. I can't quite describe it, but it wasn't my favorite dish of the night. Maybe it's an acquired taste, and for those who know this dish. It was a "meh" for our group. 3/5 PORK SHOULDER ~ Marinated pork jowl, chili lime vinaigrette dressing. Pork meat was soft, tender, and a bit fatty. Nice spicy, tangy dressing for dipping the meat, and the added lettuce for freshness. 4/5 CHIANG MAI ~ Northern style khao soi Thai curry noodles with slow braised bone-in short rib topped with crispy noodles and served with house pickle and red onions. I enjoyed the soup and the variety of different textures. The egg noodles were flat and wide with a good chew. The soft short rib meat fell off the bone nicely. And the crispy noodles on top gave it a good crunch. 4/5 BANGKOK (Pad Krapow) ~ Stir-fried pork with chili, holy basil, fried egg, blue jasmine rice. Probably my favorite dish. It was tasty and seasoned just right. It wasn't too spicy, just good umami flavor. I liked the combination of the ground meat, soft egg yolk, and blue jasmine rice. However, my friend wanted more basil in this dish. 5/5 MANGO STICKY RICE ~ Blue jasmine rice, sliced mangos, coconut sauce, with toasted coconut shreds on top. I have a sweet tooth, but even this was a bit too sweet for me. I enjoyed the blue sticky rice and sweet mango slices, but the coconut sauce should be on the side so you can control how much is used. We couldn't finish this at the restaurant, so I took it home and added extra fruit to lessen the sweetness and bring some tartness to balance the flavors. 3.5/5 We had an amazing time at Mama Mu's Bistro. Ahead of next month's Fall 2025 SF Restaurant Week, I'm reminded that I actually never got around to finishing my review for Mama Mu's Bistro! Fitting since it was their Spring 2025 Restaurant Week menu that first brought my friends and I here, but also because I'm excited to see not just if they're going to be participating again, but if they'll have the same dish that tasted so good, too! Even though I'm still kind of bummed that I never got around to trying Fiery Cafe (whoops), I got pretty excited to try Mama Mu's after passing by this place one night. I liked how the interior feels more modern than many of the other restaurants nearby, but the menu was what really caught my eye. Between their Taste of Thailand menu, featuring dishes from all over the country, and their regular menu, they have a good mix of both staples and less commonly seen dishes. Plus, they also have an option to create your own set meal (app, hot pot soup, and a main) and a happy hour deal, though they no longer offer their lunch specials anymore (and possibly their brunch menu, too). -- RESTAURANT WEEK MEAT LOVER FEAST - Tom Kha Chicken Soup, Larb Kao Todd, Pad Kee Mao with Wagyu Steak and Egg, and Mango Sticky Rice...$30 All together, this was terrific! The Tom Kha was delicious, the Larb Kao Todd was okay (really small), and the Mango Sticky Rice was solid (mango was a bit firm), but the Pad Kee Mao was the star. The noodles were thin, akin to instant ramen, but they were well seasoned and I LOVED the Wagyu - so juicy and tender! -- GARLIC PEPPER PORK with Cilantro and Fried Garlic with Rice...$16.99 (Lunch Special) I've been searching for a Garlic Pepper Pork like the one by my old job and this is the closest I've found! The chunks of pork were so tender and I really liked how peppery and garlicky it was, especially with the fried bits of garlic. -- PAD KEE MAO with Chicken, Rice Noodle, Basil Leaves, Chili, Garlic, Peppercorn, and King Oyster Mushroom...$17 Not the best I've had, but still pretty good. Loved that this one came with the usual fat noodles and that it had a fair amount of chicken and veggies in it. Plus, it had the perfect amount of spice in it - enough to tickle your tongue, but set it on fire. -- PAD GRA PAO - Ground Pork Stir-fried with Thai Red Chili, Holy Basil, Fried Egg, and Blue Jasmine Rice...$17 Despite its slightly pale coloring and how watery/wet the sauce was (it didn't coat/stick to the pork), the taste of this was pretty decent - a bit spicy, a bit savory, and not too salty. The overall portion size was fairly generous, too. -- KHAO SOI with Beef Ribs - Northern-style Thai Curry Noodles with Crispy Noodles and Served with Lime, Pickled Vegetables, and Red Onion...$20 I'm conflicted with this one. I didn't love the noodles (I'm just not a fan of the fat egg noodles) and the broth was dark with a beefier taste to it (as opposed to curry). At the same time, the latter was probably due to the giant ribs, which were so tender and flavorful. -- GAI TOD HAT YAI - Southern-style Fried Chicken Topped with Fried Shallots Served with Sticky Rice...$19 Sadly, not as good as I hoped for. The chicken was seasoned nicely and was well complemented by the fried shallots and sauce. However, the outside of the chicken felt dry/burnt (though, the center of the thigh wasn't bad). -- ISAAN SAUSAGE (Sai Krok Isaan) with Pork Silver Noodle, Garlic, and Rice...$12 Ehh...this was just okay. Although it was a bit odd how the pieces varied so much in size, the filling was juicy and it had that classic fermented, porky flavor to it (still, I wouldn't have minded if it was stronger). -- PAD SEE EW with Chicken, Rice Noodle, Egg, Chinese broccoli, Garlic, Black Soy Sauce...$17 Not too shabby, but the Pad Kee Mao was better. On the plus side, it wasn't that salty nor oily and the noodles had a great bite. On the other, a bit more seasoning, like soy or white pepper, would've helped this over the hump. Beyond the food, the other things that's awesome about Mama Mu's are their relatively late night hour (open until 10:30pm on Fridays and Saturdays) and the friendly service. Every time I've been here, the workers have always been really friendly and accommodating. What's more, I also appreciate that there has never been a wait for a table and that parking in the area is never that tough. If nothing else, it certainly makes them an attractive option in the area for something quick and convenient! We visited during restaurant week and were a bit disappointed. The staff was nice but clearly seemed overwhelmed. It took us over an hour to get our entrees after ordering. The food itself was alright; the noodle and steak dish we got was clearly instant/packaged noodles, egg was over fried and the steak a bit chewy. We were supposed to also try the fried rice with lobster but because we had to be somewhere, they just served another dish of noodles + lobster. Food wasn't bad but just okay. Great dine in happy hour from 2:30-6:30. $10 for your choice of one of the three noodle choices and add on of Thai tea for $2 or tom yum for $3. I tried the boat noodle and enjoyed it. It has a tart flavor and I was provided with condiments to adjust to my flavor profile. The meat isn't too much, and the meat to veggie ratio about equal. My friends raved about their fried mushrooms and I was craving Khao soi so we decided to stop by for lunch on a Saturday. I was sad at first because the mushrooms were no longer on the menu but we asked the waitress and she said no problem we can still make it (just without the enoki). LOVED IT. It had such a flavorful sauce, umami. We also got the fresh rolls (vegetarian) that came with the most delicious peanut/curry sauce. The Lao papaya salad was a bit too spicy for me but had lots of crab. The boat noodle and Khao soi were both hits. I personally liked the Khao soi more. We were looking to try something different on Noriega and saw MmMu on the SF Restaurant Week (RW) line-up. They were one of three Sunset Neighborhood restaurants participating in the Spring 2025 version. Also saw two beautiful food pics of their SF Restaurant week offering and decided this would be our Wednesday dinner choice. Even more fortunate that we found a parking space right in front on busy Noriega, the restaurant is located two blocks West-bound from 19th in a comfort food gourmet ghetto (Thai, Cantonese, Japanese, Korean, Bar and Bar Food, Chinese Dessert, Hotpot, Doughnut Shop, Northern Chinese XLB, Boba, Pizza, etc...), dang, that's a Mall Food court in a two block area without the mall! I wouldn't call it an eating Mecca but The Sunset with Noriega, Irving, Taraval and a little more upscale Ninth Ave has so many options for your little or big tum tum. Getting back to the dinner, we ordered the Meat Lover RW Special, Seafood RW Lover Special and a Pad See Ew. Each of the restaurant week specials offered an appetizer (Crab Rangoon, Larb Kao), small bowl of soup (Tom Yum, Tom Kha), entree (Lobster Pineapple Fried Rice, Wagyu Beef Pad Kee Mao - fried noodles), and dessert (Mango Sticky Rice). TBH, we liked the Larb Kao - fried meatballs, Tom Kha Gai - Chicken Soup, and the Mango Sticky Rice dessert (good and wanted more). The entrees sound enticing with the high end proteins of Lobster Tail and Wagyu Beef but both came out a little dry and chewy, likely from being on the grill or cast iron skillet. The protein pairing with the carbs was decent but not knock your socks off. Also the same for the Pad See-Ew, the beef was a bit chewier than what we're accustomed to in a Pad See-Ew. In conclusion, Mama Mu's Bistro is a good option if you want Thai food on Noriega but not the top Thai restaurant in The Sunset. Ambiance is small cafe feel and service is good. Mama Mu's offers comfort Thai food in a cozy environment. They offer a variety of choices between the breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. Loved the Tom Yum soup, very tomato-y and fragrant. The fried rice was sweet and savory, with an interesting mix of cashews and pineapples. The steak itself was a bit more on the stringy, chewy side. We ordered delivery to our office via DoorDash and tried a few items from the menu. For appetizers, we got the chicken wings and fried tofu. The wings had a nice umami flavor from the fish sauce; really tasty! The tofu was solid, nothing amazing but satisfying. Unfortunately, both appetizers arrived barely at room temperature, which took away from the overall enjoyment. For mains, we had the pad kee mao and the garlic pepper chicken. Another group dinner at Mama Mu's and another 5/5 experience! We came by at 7 on a Saturday and were lucky that our group of 7 were able to snag the center group of tables to be seated immediately. The store quickly filled up not too long after we were seated. We got the fried tofu appetizer to share - super tasty with a light crispy without being oily at all this was a nice snack to start the meal - as well as the chicken satay - so flavorful and tender, and comes with 3 skewers per serving. Everyone got their own dish and shared - I got the Phuket which was a creamy curry soup with noodles that comes with either crab or mixed seafood. I got the mixed seafood, and it came with a generous amount of mussels, shrimp and other goodies. The noodles and cut beans and cucumber come on the side, and this ended up being way more food than it looks like. I also tried some of my friends' Nakorn Sri Thammarat, Pad Kee Mao, Pad Thai, and Boat Noodles - everything was delicious and came in generous servings. The Nakorn Sri Thammarat comes with plenty of fresh veggies and makes for a refreshing and flavorful dish, the Pad Kee Mao and Pad Thai were both delicious (though on the heavier/oilier side), and the Boat noodles were super complex in flavor (and surprisingly sweet). Again, Mama Mu's just serves some of the most flavorful, affordable and delicious Thai food in the area, and offers such a wonderful variety of dishes, along with amazing service! read more

The khao soi w/ beef rib was phenomenal, the broth was thick and rich and you could tell that it was stewed for hours. It had the perfect amount of spice and the beef rib was so tender. The free tofu was freshly fried but soooo bland. The best thing was the thai tea and thai green tea. This came with the meal, but if you buy it separately it's a whopping $6! Service is good, but that's because we're the only one there during lunch time at 1pm. The pad see ew was heavy on the white pepper flavor, pretty different to others that I've had but yummy nonetheless, and I appreciated the mushrooms - that was a unique touch. There were also dishes that were different from your basic Thai restaurant the beef noodle soup (it has a name I don't want to butcher) - be careful for those who don't like liver . I recently learned they started serving a Thai style brunch menu and I had to check it out. We had our choice of tables and seated right away. The service was attentive. It's a limited menu in terms of Thai breakfast offerings and it seemed more Asian fusion, than Thai. They do offer some traditional, but limited breakfast items--open face toast, waffles, skillet type offerings. Some of the Asian type offerings include rice or oatmeal congee, karaage fried chicken with a tempura egg on a waffle, beef pasties with curry lava sauce and the kaya (coconut jam) toast with 2 onsen-style soft cooked eggs. We ordered both the fried chicken waffle and the kaya toast. The chicken on the waffle was a large piece of thigh with a tempura fried egg on top (a little overcooked for my taste). The chicken wasn't greasy nor was it dry & the skin was nice and crisp. There was a drizzle of syrup on the sides of the plate for the waffle, I wish there was more, otherwise the dish tastes good. The kaya toast--that was a bit underwhelming. The toast, 2 slices, cut vertically and served in a glass. The eggs were served in a second glass, sadly both eggs were broken and I wasn't sure if I was supposed to drink my eggs or dip my toast into the glass. It would have been nicer if it were served in a bowl. The drip coffee thst came with the meal was disappointing--tasted like ordinary coffee. I was hoping that it included sweetened either a choice of condensed milk, sugar or evaporated milk. I prefer their dinner menu over their breakfast. I'm sure there is room for improvement for breakfast and I'll wait a couple of months before coming back for breakfast. read more

I've done takeout here a couple of times but I was finally able to dine in recently. Unfortunately for me, I picked the weekend of SF Restaurant Week. Mama Mu's is a small place, so it is not good for large groups. The noise from the large group was really getting to me, and I wished I had earplugs. I couldn't hear myself think. So please know it's not good for a group of 10 ok?! I digress. The food has always been outstanding to me. Tons of flavor with friendly service. The star for me has consistently been the Hat Yai fried chicken. It is done correctly and perfectly - I only wish I had a bag of fried chicken skin with it like they sell in Hat Yai It came with a generous portion of sticky rice that was colored with butterfly pea, lots if fried shallots too. Please know that this style of fried chicken isn't supposed to have breading and batter all over it. I'll be back for Isaan larb and kanom jeen - they were sold out my last dine in. read more

I ordered takeout and got the Hat Yai Fried Chicken and Khao Soi (which I had never tried before). Both dishes were absolutely delicious! I'm not super familiar with some Thai dishes, but when I called to order, the staff took the time to explain everything clearly .I really appreciated that. The prices are very reasonable, and the flavors are spot on. The restaurant itself is small and cozy, with a friendly, welcoming vibe. Khao Soi, I loved it! . It tasted like a rich yellow curry with noodles and protein comforting and flavorful. If you're curious about trying Thai food, I highly recommend this place. You won't be disappointed. read more

We were sad that Fiery Cafe went away because we really loved their sandwiches. We tried out Mama Mu's for lunch since I saw they had a lunch special. Hubby got the curry of the day (red panang curry with pork, served with rice) and I got the pad kee mao. Free fried tofu appetizer for 2 lunch orders, nice! Lunch special also includes a half-sized thai ice tea. Staff is really nice and food comes out piping hot. My only complaint is that neither dish had much vegetables. The pad kee mao is stir fried with large slices of oyster mushrooms, but missing the usual bell peppers and whatnot. Flavors were good though! read more

A somewhat recent Thai fusion brunch addition to the Outer Sunset. Pretty empty on a Sunday. However, that could've been because of the rain. There are lunch deals extending through the weekend which is nice. Got the chicken, egg and waffles and a kaya set. The sauce was overwhelmingly sweet compared to savory. It was on the thicker side as well. The chicken also wasn't the crispiest I've had. The batter was quite thick on it. Waffles were too bready for me. Kaya toast was good. It was a good kaya taste and I liked dipping it into the onsen egg. They ran out of soy milk that day, so I opted for orange juice. Had a Thai tea as well, but it could've had a stronger tea taste. Overall, the restaurant is okay. The brunch options weren't amazing, but maybe the actual Thai food is better. read more

The food was decent but nothing to write home about. The presentation looks better than the taste imo. I went there for SF Restaurant Week and they had two options; Seafood Lover menu and a Meat Lover menu -- I opted for the Seafood one which had a different soup and appetizer than the Meat Lover one. My guest and I ordered the Seafood one but the server kindly let us switch the appetizer and offered to get us one of each soup instead of exactly the same. The appetizers were one single bite for each meal; a single crab rangoon and a couple dry tiny balls of fried larb, each ball smaller than an Ikea Swedish meatball. We overheard other customers being told by the server that they were out of the Mango Sticky Rice dessert but the server waited until the end of our meal to tell us that when we were both excited for the dessert. Instead, we were offered a to-go Thai Iced Tea instead which was a disappointment -- it was too red and didn't have enough half and half/creamer in it. We both ended up throwing it away because it was too warm even with ice in it and it didn't taste very good. The star of the show was supposed to be the entree, a Pineapple Fried Rice with a lobster tail served in a small cast iron skillet. The lobster tail was way too salty and overcooked and the fried rice was a flavor overload, not in a good way either. It had tons of curry powder in it but was also sweet from giant golden raisins and tons of large chunks of tomato so it was curry but not savory enough. The saltiness of the lobster couldn't be remedied because the accompanying rice had so much flavor to it that it wasn't balanced at all. Honestly, the only real positive thing I can say is that the service was pretty good but that definitely does not make up for the unremarkable food. read more

Just a total miss today. I came in with my wife and kid today and ended up ordering the Pattaya hot pot(tom yum seafood hotpot) & Hat Yai (fried chicken). It was around 4pm on a Saturday and we were the only ones there. The Hat Yai came out first and it looked great! Took the first bite and enjoyed it, then as I poured some of their chili sauce on it and took another bite closer to the bone, it felt oddly cold. I thought it was the sauce coming out of the fridge, but took another bite which had no sauce and again, it was cold! I then looked at the meat and noticed it was a bit oddly pink/brown, so I gave it a touch, cold as can be.... I notified the server and they apologized, took my plate and said they'd microwave it.... Definitely didn't touch it after that. This set the tone for the next dish as it came out a touch above lukewarm, the hotpot had the typical heating gel under it going, but it wasn't enough to heat it up quickly. While I *think* the food was cooked, we ended up not giving anything to our small child and ate what we could and quickly left. Disappointed as our first time dining in. My dad: "I'll have the spicy chicken but NO spicy." Meanwhile, "I'll have it burn your bootyhole spicy, please!" Not the exact words I use but you know what I mean. And, the best places to light your toilet paper on fire is Thai or Indian/Desi restos. Unfortunately, Mama Mu's Bistro's spice levels didn't hit for me but more on that later. Mama Mu's Bistro opened in September 2023, and we visited in January 2024 so a wee bit late on this. They're open for takeout, delivery (via their website), and indoor dining. No outdoor seating. They're denoted as TT friendly on their Yelp and Google pages which I confirmed before visiting. We visited on a Thursday night after HH on Irving and there was no wait around 6:30 pm. M E N U Regional Thai Cuisine - Northern, Central, Northeastern, and Southern Thai. No liquor license at the time of my visit. F O O D * Isaan Thai Sausage: NE fermented sausage w/ pork, rice, vermicelli, chilis, raw cabbage, sliced ginger, missing peanuts ($12) // 3.5 stars: https://tinyurl.com/2s4fsdwz The isaan sausage is made with pork, glutinous rice, spices and laced with vermicelli, then fermented...creating a pleasant sour flavor and slight bouncy texture. BYO wraps with the cabbage and accompaniments. Unfortunately, the ginger slices were dried out and the raw garlic + chilies were frozen. Also, the peanuts were missing. * Mama Mu's Wings: Deep-fried wings w/ garlic, fish sauce (3 pc - $12) // 3.5 stars: https://tinyurl.com/yrers4v6 The fried whole wings were golden brown, crispy, and tender but could have used more funk and punch from the garlic and fish sauce. * Bangkok (Pad Krapow): Stir-fried pork w/ chili, holy basil, fried egg, blue jasmine rice ($15) // 4 stars: https://tinyurl.com/yc2hdtna --Requested "Thai Spicy" but was told their spice levels run spicier than the norm so "Extra Spicy" was recommended. I went with their rec. A good value, a mound of beautiful purplish-blue rice (infused with butterfly pea flowers) was served alongside a generous portion of pad krapow crowned with a perfectly fried egg with an oozy yolk, accented with an edible gold flake. The pad krapow (stir-fried pork) had good savory-sweet flavor but I wish there was more basil. Mild heat, my friend who can't eat spicy was able to enjoy it. We overheard the table next to us telling their server, the food wasn't spicy enough either. * Chiang Mai (Khao Soi): Thai curry noodles w/ slow braised beef rib, crispy noodles, house pickle, red onion ($18) // 3.5 stars: https://tinyurl.com/5n7bfszm Thick, chewy egg noodles in a thickish, rich curry broth - mild flavor, on the sweeter side. Def use the side of lime, pickled mustard greens, and chili oil for acid and heat. Not much meat on the rib bone. I enjoyed the fried noodle garnish for a textural contrast. Overall, Mama Mu's Bistro serves decent regional Thai food. I like bolder spices and heat, and the flavors leaned more towards Americanized to me. Everyone has different palates and they may be aiming to be approachable to everyone which makes sense. I was so excited to try Mama Mu's but most of the dishes ordered fell short. First of all, I would like to say the CHIANG MAI with beef was delicious. I would come here just for this dish. They did bring my the wrong dish with chicken first but switch it to beef quickly. My friends and I was deciding between the regular Thai Papaya Salad and the Lao. The server recommended the Lao Papaya Salad. It was so fishy that we couldn't eat it. The crab was not fresh. I love raw crab and this dish was a no. We didn't complain because it might be the style of this dish but we asked them to take it away from the table. Taste and smell was just not pleasant. Never again! We got two kinds of flat noodles dishes and both were underwhelming. Not much flavor to both tofu and seafood. I got the thai ice tea. Pretty good, just make sure you ask for light ice. As for dessert, we got the mango sticky rice. The server was just only one? I now understand why, because it was pretty small. But the mango was super sweet and yummy. read more
