take out sauces and thai tea
    Alex H.

I was craving Lao food after watching a movie at Century Theaters (I don't know why) and came across this place on the way home. I came 15 mins before closing so it was take out only. I ordered the champa sampler (super crispy rice, lao sausage, and lettuce to make wraps) and the kaow paik (tapioca noodles in a light clear broth with shredded chicken) and wow they were very generous with the portions! There were still leftovers after my girlfriend and I went to town haha it most definitely curbed my hunger and craving and like Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator, I'll be back!

Finally got a chance to come back to Champa Garden, and the food is still as good as we remember! We stopped by around noon on a Sunday, and there were a few other parties, but plenty of open tables available. We picked out own table and quickly ordered some dishes to split between the four of us. -Thai Tea: it was a sunny warm day, so this thai tea was calling us - this ended up being a great idea because we overestimated our spice tolerance when ordering our papaya salad. Not watered down at all and a great thai tea. -Papaya salad: we got the thai style this time and confidently ordered a 5/10 spice. It was a bit too much for most of us, but still bearable - I'd probably get a 3 spice next time. Super fresh, with a bit of tartness cutting through the spice. -Champa sampler: forgot to get a picture but it looks the same as my previous review - we love the fresh veggies and herbs to go with the crispy rice, sausage and fried rolls. -Tom Kha: creamy, comforting, fragrant and full of mushrooms and our choice of chicken. -Pad kee mao: not too oily, with a generous amount of beef and veggies, this was just what we were looking for. Overall, a solid classic place to get comforting thai and lao food to split with friends. I know we'll be back again!

We visited Champa Garden on a Friday afternoon and found it mostly empty. The interior was cozy and casual, with plenty of seating and fake flowers hanging all around the bar. For drinks, my partner and I both chose hot tea, which was nice. It came in a kettle but weirdly didn't arrive until after our food was served. For food, we ordered the Fresh Spring Rolls to share. I also got the Tom Kha soup with chicken and he got the Champa Sampler, since our server said it was their most popular item. The Fresh Spring Rolls were tasty, but I wish they had come with more peanut sauce. My Tom Kha was awesome! The broth was so flavorful and it was the perfect meal for a rainy day. I couldn't try any of the Champa Sampler because it was all pork, but my partner said it was pretty tasty. His favorite part was the sausage. But he also said he would try a curry next time, since that's more up his alley. Portion sizes were huge, so we had plenty of food to take home. Overall, pretty good!

The taster plate was a delight sausage, imperial roll and vegetables are top notch. I ordered the Pineapple Fried rice but it was bitter from too much curry and the pineapple was sour. I complained about it and they took it off from my bill. They were. very understanding and pleasant about it. The place is clean and a lot of locals come for good food. I recommend checking them

Ordered the Pad Se-Ew with Chicken and then the Mango Sticky Rice here! I like that the Pad Se-Ew tasted pretty light and didn't have an overpowering amount of sauce/ Soy sauce. The portion sauce was also decent a size. I really liked the Mango Sticky Rice here! There was a heaping amount of rice along with sweetened coconut milk and the mango was pretty sweet as well! Staff was quick and efficient and the dishes came out fast. The restaurant was clean, spacious and had a nice dinner ambience :)

Bottom Line Up Front: This is an Asian fusion restaurant that serves solid Thai and Laotian cuisine at decent prices. The Food: I was thrilled to see Kaow Soi on the menu. This is often my go-to dish when I go to a Thai restaurant, as I love its thick egg noodles, creamy yellow broth, and unique flavors. Unfortunately, that's not what I got when I ordered "Lue's Noodle Soup - Kaow Soy" from the menu. It had pretty much the same ingredients of the Kaow Soi I'm used to, but this had white rice noodles while the broth was more watery than creamy and more brown than yellow -- think beef noodle style rather than creamy coconut broth. Taste-wise, it was fine, but I was just disappointed it wasn't what I was expecting. Maybe this is the Laotian version? Fortunately, the other dishes my group got was more or less solid. The Pad Se-ew was standard fare, but the fried tilapia was delicious, with a perfectly crispy exterior and moist interior. The Champa Sampler (Lao sausages, fried spring rolls, and fried rice ball salad) was good and a good dish to get for sharing. But perhaps the best order was the Mango Sticky Rice. Simply delicious. The Service: The entire staff was friendly, prompt, and competent. Unlike at most Asian restaurants, the servers checked in with us from time to time and refilled our waters. The Setting: It's a medium sized establishment that was clean and well organized. The restrooms were clean, though some parks vandalized the mirror and paper towel dispenser with graffiti. Also, like many places in The greater San Francisco area, finding parking can be difficult. We lucked out with free street parking in front, but don't expect such lucky during peak weekend hours. The Conclusion: If you're looking for traditional Thai food, you might be a little disappointed. But if you enjoy trying a different take on Thai food or want the option of also having Laotian cuisine, Champa Garden can deliver the goods. It's really all about expectations. My true rating is 3.5 out of 5, but since Yelp doesn't allow for half stars, I'll round up to 4 because the staff was so nice.

Loved this place, hope to go back and try more dishes! Great for family style, but since it was only two of us we got the Champa garden sampler and the fermented bean soup- both excellent choices! The price is also very reasonable so I would come back with a large group to try more dishes. It's a casual spot overall with great food

Came during dinner time around 6ish, no wait Service was friendly, pretty spacious We both got thai ice tea, slightly on the sweeter side but not bad 7/10 We ordered 1. Fried wrapped spring roll: very crispy and flavorful, the vermicelli on the side was cooked perfectly, when everything was wrapped in the lettuce, and paired with the sweet, garlicky, savory dipping sauce, just tasty 10/10 2. Thai fried rice: nice combo of veggies, umami flavor with the beef 10/10 3. Yellow curry: this dish was very disappointing. I was expecting a mild creamy yellow curry but it wasn't and it was watery and spicer than I expected 4/10, I would pass on this one Overall, tasty food and would come again but I would skip on the curry

We had another delicious meal at this restaurant. I often forget how good it is. They have changed up the interior slightly, but it is still a cool and welcoming space. We have had the Larp and Pineapple Fried Rice. Both very tasty. But the highlight of this meal was the whole Tilapia with Cilantro. Amazing flavor! The staff is always helpful and friendly. I plan on going more often, as some of my other regular spots have closed or changed management.

Food: Pad Prik King - 4/5 - The perfect combo of veggies and meat with a little zing to it. Service: 4/5 - Friendly attentive service. Ambiance: 4/5 - A decent amount of seating. Food and service was amazing. The shareable Champa Sampler is definitely a MUST HAVE! It comes with lettuce to wrap it on the side, which balances well with the savory sauce and food. The place can a little pricey, but it's worth the flavor & large portions to share. Clean restaurant with nice ambiance for a good dinner for a date or with family.

We always pass by this place as my kids go to the music school on the same block. We finally had a chance to try the food on a Friday night. The food was unexpectedly delicious. Por laos - I really liked it. Highly recommend if you want a twist of the typical spring rolls. Chicken satay - it's one of the best ones I have, especially from a restaurant at this price point. The chicken breast was on the slightly thicker side, which give us a meaty and satisfying satay. The meat was perfectly cooked and juicy and tender. And they served with the spot on satay sauce. I do wish we get more cucumber salad though. But that's more like my personal preference. Soft shell crab - this is the dish that really won us over. Not only they fried the soft shell crab to perfection, they used quality ingredient as well. (We had been in restaurants before where we got fishy soft shell crab - even after they were deep fried to death.). My kids always wanted to try soft shell crab and they loved it after having their first bit over here. I didn't expect to have this perfect soft shell crab here in a small Thai/Laotian restaurant. Yellow curry w/ chicken - fairly standard yet delicious. I do have to praise the staff for being thoughtful. I forgot to ask for mild when I placed the order. I was so worried that the curry will be too spicy for our table. But apparently the staff made the adjustment for us when they saw us coming with two young kids. Kudos for that! Pad see ew with beef - it's on the sweeter side. We got generous portion of beef in this economy! :) I think this place is a pretty good value. We left with a happy and full belly. It may not be the perfect spot for large parties but it's definitely the perfect spot for those who are in the area craving for authentic Thai/Laotian cuisine!

Fresh rolls - crisp and springy with lots of greens and tofu and a good peanut sauce to dip. Crispy pork belly sweet basil - the CRISP and flavor of this pork belly was to die for. Chicken larb - this was my favorite dish of the night. Heavy basil/herbs, just a little kick from the chilies, full on flavor explosion. I will be thinking of this dish for a long time haha. Every grain of crispy rice was fried to perfection and there was a wonderful sour and spicy tang throughout each bite. The other dish I really enjoyed was the Lao sausages. These sausages are packed with so many different herbs and spices. The lemongrass flavor was especially prominent. The Thai iced coffee was delicious and strong! As it should be. It did give me the jitters though because I'm a weak sauce. We were a party of ten and I was able to make rezzies via phone for a Friday evening at 6:30pm no problem about a week beforehand. The kiddos ordered à la carte, and five of us adults had the following: - BMV ultimate papaya platter with Lao sausage, angel wings and crispy pork. Crispy pork was legit, papaya salad definitely had that extra funk. The angel wings were crispy and meaty and my friends loved the Lao sausage. One even said "it's like tom yum soup in a sausage". It was very lemongrass forward which is not my thing, but that's my problem. I feel we could have ordered à la carte and that would have been a better deal than $75 for the platter. Some of it was fluff like the cabbage, rice and pork rinds. - Khao soy soup: Fiancé thought it would be creamy and coconut-y like the Thai version but it wasn't. I did enjoy the flat noodles but they were all stuck together. - Pia pla ka pow (fish with basil): Good one. The fish was moist and flavorful. The veggies were al dente and delicious too. - Sakoo: Unique! I enjoyed the chewy mochi exterior and the savory ground pork filling. It needed a sauce. I just used the chili sauce that was on the party platter. - Laab Gai: This fell flat for me. I'm not a huge fan of organs though. - Nam khao fried rice: One of our favorites! The crispy pieces really made this dish. Would definitely order this again. - Mango sticky rice: Served warm. Very sweet mango! - Purple rice with egg custard: Also served warm. This was ok. - Side of rice: HUGE serving! Unfortunately it was clumpy and hard, which means old. Street parking only. Get the nam khao and mango sticky rice!

San Tung was one of the only busy spots on Irving Street during a weekday lunch hour, which felt like a promising sign. We were seated pretty quickly at a large round table across from two other diners, which was totally fine. And after looking around at everyone's tables, it was clear that these two dishes were the most popular items. Since this was my first time trying the dry fried chicken wings, I was surprised that they came out coated in a thick, sticky sauce--so not necessarily "dry" in the way I expected. Flavor-wise, they leaned more sweet than savory. I think this dish would be a big hit for people who enjoy sweet and sour or kung pao-style chicken, which isn't usually my personal preference. My husband definitely enjoyed them though, so I can see why they have such a loyal following. The black bean noodles were warm and comforting, with a nice homey feel. The sauce had good flavor, although I thought it leaned a little bland and wasn't quite as thick or rich in texture as I personally prefer. Overall, San Tung was a fun spot to finally try, especially given how much hype surrounds those wings. I'd definitely come back with a bigger group of friends so we could order more dishes and get a better feel for the menu, but I probably wouldn't come back on my own for anything in particular.
