Mama Rosa's and I go back a long time...over 25 years...(sharp intake of breath at the realization it's really been that long).... Those of us who can go back that far might remember the mint green decor and the old PacMan table.... I've seen it go through 3 renovations - new signage out front, parking lot resurfacing....but the pizza has always remained INCREDIBLE. Unbelievable, actually. I have YET to find a place that tops Mama Rosas..... So, the location has become a bit more sketchy over the years...Mama's is located along the edge of Grosse Pointe Park and the "East side" of Detroit. If you are looking for a picturesque view, you won't get one here... grab your pizza and head to Lakeshore and sit on the water to eat it.....because while Mama Rosa's is situated on the Grosse Pointe side of Mack Avenue, the other side of the street is adorned with nothing but overgrown lots, burnt down buildings and busted-up cars. Yeah...if you aren't used to seeing that, you might be a little concerned for your safety...but don't be...Mama's caters to the local police both in Detroit and GPP - so there are always officers stopping in, and the area is HEAVILY patrolled. Mama's also has it's own private lot, and if that gets full, just park in the lot directly across in the Lakepointe Building (after hours only!)...same side of Mack. If you park on the other side of Mack, you may not have a vehicle waiting for you after! There is street parking right in front of Mama's also...just make sure you pay the meter because you WILL get a ticket....the GPP meter maid is not to be messed with! :) The interior is cozy - a few tables down the center and a handful of booths along one side. There are 2 corners that can accommodate a larger group...definitely intimate dining...don't talk too loud because everyone in the joint will be able to hear you! No outdoor seating. No wi-fi. If you want to work on your computer, run a hotspot through your phone or go to Starbucks. Decor is Italian and chic...love the last renovation...although I do miss the mint green of my childhood... (SIGH). Did I mention that they serve beer? Yep....you can get an ICE COLD beer with that incredible pizza...in my opinion, it's really the only way to eat Mama's pizza...and I'm typically not a beer drinker....in fact, I only drink it with pizza at Mama's now that I am thinking about it! HA! The sauce is on the sweet side all around - whether it's pizza, ravioli, spaghetti, even ribs...all on the sweet side....and DELISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The house salad is boring - that's my only complaint, but who cares.... if I was sitting there with one of those pies in front of me, the whole damn place could be burning down and I would have no clue. Price is average. Carry-out is huge...lots of customers stopping in to pick up and take home. They aren't open for lunch - they open at 4pm..... lots of bars in the area within walking distance if you want to go out for great pizza and then a few drinky drinks after.... Instead of being helpful, the girl that answered the phone indicated that she didn't have time for our questions, and very rudely suggested we check yelp and figure out the menu for ourselves. The thing that makes this place is Amy, the veteran waitress. Interior is blah, often has a wait. Sauce for pastas is on the sweet side - wish it had a little kick of heat with the sweet. My food was not so hot temperature wise, canned mushrooms used in dishes not fresh. But this woman could charm the socks off the most dour patron. Won the kids over with shaped pizza selections, me with her hometown smile. My cousins dinner wasn't right - tasty but not what they ordered. Food: 4 stars Service: 0 stars I really wanted to be able to leave a higher review because the food wasn't too bad. The service, however, was horrible. It took an hour for our food to be delivered. The delivery guy apologized and said they were slammed. No problem! Well, until my husband opened his meatball sub only to find a rather pathetic Italian sub. No meatballs in sight. He called the restaurant and an incredibly rude young lady answered the phone and it was all downhill from there. He explained the situation. They looked up our order. Apparently, they had chosen the wrong sub when taking our order. She said, "We could exchange the sub out or give you credit." My husband asked to have the correct sub delivered. This was apparently a shocking request. She then proceeded to say it would be another 45 minutes! What!? She went on to scream at someone in the background, "What do you want me to do with this!?" Hospitality 101: If you screw up an order, you fix it immediately. Initially, my husband said "okay." He called back a few minutes later to cancel that request because he was just disgusted with her attitude. When he called back to cancel, she hung up on him. No matter how many times we eat here I just can't tell you how impressed I am every time I get my food. There is never a break in the consistency of your order from week-to-week month-to-month everything is perfect every time no matter how long it's been since you've been here and ordered the same dish. This has to be the best Italian food in the entire portion of Southeast Michigan that I have ever eaten at. It's about a 30 mile drive to get here from my house and it's worth every Mile and every minute it takes to get here. We've been in the area for about two years and we tried Mama Rosa's for the first time yesterday when my parents were visiting and asked if there were any non-chain pizza places around. After racking my brain I remembered that there was a little place on Mack. It wasn't easy to find a menu online but luckily someone had posted one on yelp! We did a carry out order of the two-for pizza special and a large antipasto salad. Everything was great! Chewy pizza crust, tasty tomato sauce and the perfect amount of toppings. The salad had a lot of topping too, which is awesome. I hate when it's mostly iceberg lettuce. I called in the order and picked it up all within 25 minutes. The staff was friendly. They did have a dining room for dine-in orders which i'm sure we will utilize in the future. I'm only sad we took so long to try it! read more

Good food, cute restaurant, and we live nearby which makes it convenient. The only reason I'm giving it three stars is because on the occasions we have opted to dine in, we have found the service to just be....odd. It can be dead inside and the service will be extremely slow. Other times there will be four people waiting in line to pay their bills or pick up carry out and there isn't a single employee on the floor. It takes an eternity to get drink refills and the servers just aren't that attentive in general. I don't really get it. The staff aren't exactly rude, they just don't seem that interested, and they are never busy enough to justify a five minute wait for a napkin or refill. It's a tiny place with a small dining area, I just don't get why they are so inefficient. We normally just order carry out. We love their salads, which are HUGE. An "individual" easily feeds two people, and a "small" can feed four. I don't even want to know how big the large is. The pizza is fine, but to me, nothing can top Dinotos, which is farther up the street. The cheesy "mama bread" is ridiculously good. So bummed to write this review. I've gotten delivery from here for years whenever I come to town. But the last delivery my brother ordered was dusted with pubic hairs. I waited to leave a review because I don't want a business to suffer because of one rogue employee. But their response was inadequate. At first they hung up on us when we called to report it. On a subsequent call we asked the supervisor to find out who did it and update us with whatever action they've taken to remedy the situation. That never happened. The pizza here was excellent! I had the BBQ chicken square pizza. I was quite impressed. The crust was tasty (sort of like Buddy's but not as crunchy). The highlight was the BBQ sauce! Mama Rosa's is right down the street from me, so I get carryout or stop in here for meals more often then I probably would if I had to drive farther to get here. They have a fairly limited menu, but what they do offer is really good and the prices are right. I frequently get the chicken parmesan or one of the baked pasta options. If I'm eating in I'll get a glass of the house Chianti or their house Cabernet to go along with my pasta. Both are hearty and good. I know a lot of people love their pizza but I'm embarrassed to say I've never ordered it. You get a bread basket, a side of pasta and a salad when you get a dinner. My only complaint is the salad. It's iceberg lettuce with a few cucumber slices and tomato wedges. I feel like nobody wants a iceberg salad anymore, it's like eating water. Yuk. So - up your game on the salad, get some mixed greens or at least some romaine and you'll get 1 more star. :) read more

I tried this pizza and antipasto last weekend. I was encouraged by a review that said it was like Loui's in Hazel Park. I ordered a large square and small antipasto. The ingredients were very fresh in both the pizza and salad. However the dough seemed too chewy and undercooked, and the toppings were sparse. They could put another 1/3 cup of toppings more for a large. I also agree with another reviewer that it has a very bland taste. It might be ok for people with digestive issues. The salad was very fresh, however I prefer cubed meat and cheese in my antipasto, not slices and shredded cheese. The Italian dressing was ok. Then I noticed they started to skimp on toppings. And I mean SKIMP. Then the sauce. They put one tablespoon for an entire large pizza. Now the final straw. I really enjoy coming to this place. It's simple and quaint and teeny tiny, which I personally like. It smells good as soon as you walk in, because every single table has pizza on it. And you want to get the pizza. It's not the most affordable pizza on the planet, but it's quality. It's crispy, not too much sauce, the right amount of cheese, crazy hot out of the oven and you burn your damn mouth on it cause you don't wait to eat it. Loves. Curious about this place for a long while, and in the vicinity today, I stopped by. The Greek salad is one of the best tasting in the area. A small is enough for 3-4 people, easily. It reminds me of the wonderful Greek salad at Buddy's. The square pizza was very good - I recommend the banana peppers on a pizza, which give a nice little kick. Best pizza in the area, hands down. For starters, go for the antipasto salad. Their house dressing is the perfect topping. For breadsticks, you can't go wrong with mama's breadsticks - either the cheese or Parmesan. The warm marinara for dipping is delish - kids and grown ups alike will dip away. We do pretty much always stick to the pizza so I can't comment on the other meals - but the pizza (round or square) is great. I like the square best, for the crunchy corners but the round will work. For those who like the little, thick pepperoni (Me! Me! Me!) - that comes standard on the round but you can request it for the square. I highly recommend. I am typically a sausage and onion gal but I have to have the little pepperoni at Mama Rosa's. If you are looking for an adult beverage, they keep it simple. Domestic beer and a few wine options. Mama Rosa's has the best pizza in the GP area, hands down. It's in Grosse Pte. Park on Mack, and is open from 4 to midnight during the week, and 4 to at least 2 (maybe even 4, in the past) on weekends. MR probably seats about 40 people - it's tiny but there's rarely a long wait - lots of people get carry-out, so that helps to alleviate potential long lines. This place is cheap, delicious, and down-home. The waitresses are nice and very efficient (Amy is the best). The ambiance is, eh, whatever (the posters are great, but the lighting is way too bright for my tastes and the decor is boring as all hell, which is why I took half a star off), but the food is why people go here. The pizza is really good, and the lasagna is to die for. My Mom loves the eggplant parmesan. The entrees come with good salads (even though there's some iceberg lettuce in them, it's always super-fresh and crisp), and bread (also good). This is in no way haute cuisine, but it is damn good "red sauce" Italian food that will make your tastebuds and tummy very happy. I loved going here when the beverage choices were limited to pop, lemonade, water and coffee but they got a beer and wine license a few yrs. ago, so it's nice to be able to have a glass of red w/ the pasta or a beer with your pizza. But you don't want to have too many because ... Mama Rosa's is beloved by many Detroit policemen on the Eastside beat - they come here b/c it's way better than any donut shop (sorry, couldn't help myself)! So just know that this is definitely more of an eating restaurant than a drinking one (it's the antithesis of, say, the Beach Grill). On that note, the food here is so, so tasty - enjoy! read more
