The soup dumplings were good. The dough was thin, but held up and the soup and flavour of the dumplings was tasty. Shanghai pan fried noodles with pork was our favourite. The noodles had a good chew and the flavour was good. It wasn't too oily and I liked the mix of vegetables and pork in it. Pan fried pork buns, although they looked small, it was a good amount. The bottoms were crisped but not too crispy and the filling was juicy. Overall, a very satisfying meal. Prices are reasonable for the portions. I've been coming to this place for years. No complaints about food or service, ever--until my last visit. Food quality is still ok. The service has always been slow--never knowing if your food is coming next or if it's going to the next table. Parking is a hit and miss. Such inconvenience. But all tolerated until now. I waited in line patiently for this guy to take my order and when he finally comes back to the counter to take my order, he got p*ssed that I started ordering using the numbers that coincides with the menu items. Finally, 生煎馒头/生煎包 stop number three on my way out of Canada. As other reviews state, this restaurant is located in the middle of an industrial area, which I found to be very strange, but I guess that makes it hidden enough so it doesn't get too crowded. There are a couple of parking spots reserved for the place in front, labeled "Unit 103 Reserved." Menus are at the register, pick one up, pick a table and go back to the register to order. They'll supply the chopsticks and plates, then bring over the food when it's ready. Shanghai-Style Fried Pork Buns (SJB) ($7.99) - 4pc. About 1/2 a soup spoon's worth of melted aspic gushes out of this SJB. The soup is yellow/brown in color but is very clear with no suspended particulates or fat, other than the natural pork oils. It has a very concentrated porky umami taste that also feels quite clean at the same time. The exterior of the SJB is cooked to perfection; as is traditional, the bao are packed together into a single pan, resulting in a kind of squished/squarish look, with the parts touching the oil becoming golden brown and the parts touching other buns remaining paler. The crust is quite nice, with more of a drier crunch rather than being super oil laden. It's relatively thin with a good texture and isn't fluffy like the more traditional fluffy bao type of SJB. The pork filling is tender and again very clean feeling and lean, holding together well in a ball without pieces flaking off. The bao are topped with a good amount of scallion and sesame. While these are lighter and less filling than some other SJBs that I had on this trip, they are pretty good. (4.5/5) Nanxiang-Style Xiao Long Bao (XLB) ($7.99) - 6pc. There's a decent amount of soup that drips out of this soup dumpling, approximately 3/4 of a soup spoon's worth. The broth is mostly clear, but pieces of pork fat break off the main filling and precipitate out into the soup. Even though I feel like the fillings are substantially the same between the SJB and XLB, the amount of fat that comes out makes this broth taste a little richer. The pork itself is tender and almost falls apart in the mouth. The skin is a bit thicker for a homemade XLB; it's thin enough not to feel doughy, but thick enough that the melted aspic can't be seen through the skin. The dumpling is cooked until the entirety of the skin is the same texture, even the portion that is thicker at the pinch point. (4/5) Noodle Salad with Scallions (CYBM) ($10.99) - This is the simple vegetarian version of CYBM, likely made with only noodles, soy sauce, oil, and scallion. The scallion is blistered in the oil, but not rendered out until completely crisp. It's super fragrant and great to eat even by itself. The noodles are fantastic; superb bounce almost like long ramen noodles. The sauce is mostly oil with a bit of saltiness but not too much color from soy sauce. Overall a fragrant dish with a very pleasing mouthfeel. (4.5/5) Mama's Dumpling certainly serves some good food. Located in an industrial area, I found parking to be an issue. Only certain parking spots are reserved for each business and there's not many stalls to go around..just fyi. This restaurant is basically a self service model. Order at the counter, seat yourself, and they'll bring the food when it's ready. I found the food to be decent, nothing blew me away. The string beans were a bit salty but still pretty tasty. The wonton soup was ok, but the broth tasted like it was instant bouillon. The beef wrap was super tiny but tasty. I've tried their food twice now. First time was take out and I found their food to be great but cold so I decided to visit them in person as well so I can try the food hot. Parking is pretty good, there are quite a bit of spaces in front of the restaurant. When I went into the restaurant, I stood at their entrance for the longest time because no one acknowledged me although staff were just standing around doing their own thing in the empty restaurant. I said Hello but I was ignored. I did notice a sign to order at the front but I couldn't find the menu anywhere near the entrance so I stood there for a loonngg time. I had issues before with being told a set of chop sticks was $1 with a take out order. After a year, I thought I'd give them another chance, after a couple of tries i was disappointed again. Going in for a late lunch, the open sign brightly shining on in the after sun, trying to order my lunch i was met with the order clerk abruptly saying it would take over 30 minutes to start my order. If they're ostensibly closed, why not turn off the sign, lock the door, put up a sign saying same. Never again - no more chances in an area with many more choices. This place is pretty hidden, it's in a business complex so if you aren't looking for this place, it's not in plain sight. Also, they are doing take out only currently so just make your orders online and you can come pick them up. We got: Shanghai Pan Fried dumplings: the bottom was perfectly crisp, the inside was filled with soup and it was flavorful. Xiao Long Bao: seriously one of the best soup dumplings I had in a really long time. It was filled with soup, the texture of the dumpling skin was the right amount of thickness and you can definitely eat it with or without vinegar/chili oil. Mama's Dumpling & Coffee has been on my list to try ever since I randomly read about them. What's not to love? Hole in the wall, random industrial spot specializing in dumplings? You know I'm down. We dropped in on a Tuesday afternoon (around 1:00pm). The place wasn't too busy but it was about half full. We missed the lunch rush; apparently, they cleaned out all of the Shanghai-style fried pork buns. More ridiculous is that they make these fresh and it can take up to 30 minutes to prepare! The menu is split into Chinese pastries & dim sum, wontons, soups, boiled dumplings, noodles, rice, appetizers & salads, vegetables and meats & seafood. That's a lot of items on a two page menu; focus on the first page. They also have "specialty" drinks, aka. coffee, hot chocolate and lattes. Grab a menu when you walk in, tick what you want and then go up to order/pay. They'll bring the food out to your table when it's ready. Water is self service and there's soy sauce, vinegar and chili sauce on the table. I wish they provided a small saucer so that you could make your own sauce. No ginger provided either. - Nanxiang-style xia long bao (#101) ($6.99 for 6) - these were heavenly XLB's. Wrapper was thin but retained all the soup. Soup had great flavour and the pork filling was juicy. - Shanghai-style pork wontons (#300) ($8.99 for 12) - the broth was homey and comforting. The wontons themselves had a tasty pork filling and satisfying bite. Something was a tad salty (guessing the pork) but overall, great bowl. - Shrimp, egg & Chinese chive dumplings (#204) ($10.90 for 12) - these were so-so. This place is LEGIT for their XLB (Xiao Long Bao) or soup dumpling! My husband found it by accident while he was picking up supplies at this industrial/offices area. You won't guessed that there's this gem around this area for XLB. Currently only offer take outs at their location, you can call ahead or use their easy online ordering system where you can set the time to pick up your order. If you have to order on the spot, you have to wait for 15-20 mins depends on how busy they are. Parking has never been a problem for us as there's always ample parking in front of their restaurant or the area around it. Our go-to are of course the XLB and also their pan fried pork buns. The XLB have this wonderful thin skins where the soup are still contained inside. The filling is balanced in flavor. Same goes to the pan fried pork dumplings, the soup are still contained inside and it has wonderful flavor. We tried one of the kitchen's menu today, the beef and flat rice noodles and we were really happy with it. The noodles have great wok-hei and the beef was generous. Surprisingly decent! I had this restaurant on my list for awhile, and finally got a chance to go. It's not a full-service restaurant. You order and pay at the front, then seat yourself. There is also a water station that is self-serve. The air con is really nice here, as well as the interior. It's clearly renovated and well-cared for, and washrooms are new and clean. The xiao long bao had some of the thinnest skin I have ever had. They came steaming hot, filled with soup, and the meat was very flavourful. I only wish they had provided little dishes for me to pour vinegar in for dipping. Some of the best xiao long bao I've had - even the top knot was thin. This is a must-order, and I would get it again and again. The raw fried buns were also very good. The underside was crispy, and clearly raw fried; the soup inside was sooo hot and delicious, and the meat inside was again, very good. This is also a must-order. We also wanted to try a noodle soup, so we ordered the dandan noodles. This noodle came with a more brothy soup, different from the usual thick-sauced dandan noodle we're used to. There were peanuts on top, and the soup had a good peanuty spicy flavour to it. The noodles were cooked perfectly. Overall, I would totally come back here and try some other dishes, while ordering the xiao long bao and raw fried buns again. If you were to ask what one food item seems to cross cultural boundaries, it's probably the humble dumpling. Whether you call it a dumpling, gyoza, perogy, ravioli, or samosa... every culture has some form of dumpling. And, if you ask someone, they'll usually say that no one makes dumplings like Mama (I don't know from experience because my mother never made dumplings - but that's another story). The reason why I'm talking about dumplings (and dumplings made by Mama in particular) is because I heard about a place called Mama's Dumplings out in Richmond. As it so happens, we were out at the Richmond Sunflower Festival in September and decided to stop by Mama's Dumplings for some lunch afterwards. First thing that you need to know is that Mama's is a bit difficult to find if you don't know where they're located. They're actually in a semi-industrial complex located behind the Coppersmith Shopping Centre. Once you find your way inside, grab a table and a laminated order sheet to decide what you want to eat. When you're ready, bring it up to the front counter to order and pay. Apparently, they're known for their Shanghai-style fried pork buns but this usually takes a while to come out so we stuck with some basic items... Fried Beef Rice Noodles aka Chow Fun ($10.99), Mapo Tofu ($9.99), Nanxiang Style Xiao Long Bao ($6.99), and Boiled Pork and Cilantro Dumplings ($10.9). First off, the XLB were pretty good. The skin was fairly thin and there was an adequate amount of "soup" in the filling. Despite the XLB being freshly prepared and steaming hot, I didn't find the filling to be super hot. Perhaps that's a good thing because you don't want to burn yourself on the liquids... just found that a bit odd. In any case, a pretty respectable dumpling in my opinion... even better because none of the dumplings broke. Next up was the boiled dumplings. These puppies have a thicker wrapper (which is required to withstand the boiling process). There's a number of different variations that they have available and I found the pork and cilantro to be pretty good. We don't order Mapo Tofu very often but sometimes you just have a craving for it. Generally, I prefer the ones with meat in it but I didn't mind this version. It had a nice level of spiciness but wasn't overpowering. You really need some type of carbs to soak up the sauce and white rice is the perfect vessel for that job. Last up was the modest Chow Fun dish. It really doesn't get much more like comfort food that a plate of pan-fried noodles. This particular version is a bit basic... rice noodles, onions, and beef. A couple of sprigs of chopped green onions would have made all the difference here. So, overall, if you can find this place, it's got some pretty good Shanghainese dishes. read more

Clean and bright inside, serving up very tasty dumplings and Chinese dishes. Green onion pancake - it's perfectly crispy! First review of 2019, let's start with a 5 star! This may not be so hidden anymore but definitely still a gem! Mama's Dumpling & Coffee is a great causal and cozy place to enjoy some classic asian comforts. Don't be afraid to open the door, you can start by getting a laminated menu sheet and washable marker as you enter and then sit down and check off the items that make you drool. Once you have everything in order, give your choices to the front cashier and you can pay there as well. Kinda sad there is no milk tea here but there's a variety of teas, coffees and soft drinks. Our order came pretty quickly afterwards. Spicy Chili Tofu Slices had a really good kick of spice and the tofu was julienned nicely with a mix of fresh celery and carrots. The Nanxiang-style Xiao Long Baos were steamy hot and of course had a rich broth inside and a meaty inside. The skin was thin but not so delicate to rip instantly, a perfectly balanced xlb! The Boiled Pork and Chives Dumplings were super delicious as well. Nicely cooked skin with a good stuffing of tender pork and chives - don't forget the vinegar to add that special punch of flavour! The Green Onion Pancake was a surprise, not very oily but super chewy - it almost reminded me of the texture of a chinese donut. Very yummy but I wish there was more green onions. The Sour & Spicy soup was true to its name. The two star dishes were the Shanghai-style Pork Wontons and the Shanghai Pan-fried Noodles. The Pork Wontons were swimming in a delicious light and creamy soup. The pork wontons were tiny, delicious presents of tender pork wrapped in a silky skin - such a comforting bowl! The Pan-fried noodles had a mild wok-hay/fried aroma and the noodles looked hand-made with their irregular shape but the chewy, thickness was al dente and delicious. The shredded cabbage and chicken that were mixed in were a great accompaniment. The service was friendly and present when needed. I always appreciate bottles of water you can bring to your table so you always have water at hand. Credit cards are accepted. Plenty of free parking outside. I'd give this place 5 stars even if they served literal rocks because the Shanghai-style fried pork buns are honestly one of the best Chinese dishes I've ever had. I've ordered takeout from Mama's several times and I'm still floored by how good this dish is. The buns are fried to perfection, and the filling is a solid mix of meat and... SOUP! The crunchinesses mixed with a soft interior and delicious soup is such a texture trip in your mouth that is executed perfectly. Even a couple hours after getting them they still held up and tasted amazing. I've also had their dumplings, XLB and dan-dan noodles. It's a hidden gem, only offering take out due to COVID-19 and located in an industrial area in the ironwood area. Next time we will try the din din noodles (my old favourite). The chicken fried rice was bland and needed a good helping of soy sauce to make it flavorful. We made a dumpling dipping sauce with soy sauce and a splash of vinegar with hot oil. Total recommend doing this. The Nangxiang style xiao long(#101 on the menu) was good. Shanghai style fried pork buns (#100) were delicious but gotta watch out of the hot liquid inside. Maximum occupancy is about 40. Right when you walk in the door, there's a sign that says to take a (laminated) menu & seat yourself, which we did & grabbed a whiteboard marker. Select the items on the 2-sided menu, go up to the cashier for them to process & pay your order. The food all came to the table fairly quickly & tasted meh. Ordered the dan dan noodles, beef wrap, XLB, noodle salad & fried rice. 3 out of the 5 items just all tasted spicy with not much flavour. The other 2 (wrap & XLB) were just bland. However, as we were at the end of our meal, the table beside us had fried pork buns which looked really good & soupy. I could hear the lady comment to her companion that it was delicious. They were super good like everyone says. Really thin skinned and juicy. You help yourself to vinegar, soy and hot sauce. $7.99 for 6. Not cheap but not super expensive either. Next came the spicy cumin wings. Ordered them based on a yelp review. $11.99 on the menu so was wondering how many there were. Surprised when they were brought to our table as there were only 6! I was having a stressful week and craving some comfort food so I came here for some dandan (spicy peanut sauce) noodles and green onion pancake. The decor is modern, but it's kind of a weird set up. It's a hybrid take out/sit down service. This place is located in an industrial area behind Ironwood shopping centre. Dandan noodles: light non-greasy sippable peanut soup. I drank most of the soup because there were bits of peanuts all the way to the end. A lot of the dandan noodles I've had so far were oily, heavy or thick soups. This was very enjoyable and filling. Pan fried green onion pancake: crispy and flaky outer layers with soft interior. Nice green onion flavour. One of the best I've had. I thought I would have leftovers. Nope. Ate it all. They have an extensive coffee menu but they don't have a dessert menu and I can't see myself drinking it with shanghai food. Maybe the iced versions when the weather is hot? I also appreciate the free parking spaces in front. I was informed they only use organic meats. They have one server in the front busily running around. -Great hidden gem- There should be a person out there that specializes in reviewing restaurants hidden in industrial areas... that'd be one hell of a niche. Anyways Xiao Long Bao Dumplings - very thin layer, lots of soup and the pork is very well seasoned but not overbearing. If you hold on to it, commit to it otherwise you might breach the pastry. Shanghai fried pork buns - probably my favorite dish here. This dish takes some time to cook, so be patient. The soft bready goodness is also firm and crunchy and brown underneath. The soup in this thing is kinda ridiculous. The pork is similar, if not the same, to the Xiao Long Bao. But maybe more pepper was noted. Cumin fried chicken wings - probably the weakest dish for me. While I love cumin, I didn't really get a good injection of cumin in every bite. The chicken is fried to a dry skin. I think for the price, you could skip this one. read more

Hidden gem!! I had heard about this place from friends and finally tried it out. The location is a tad odd and out of the way in comparison to the busy restaurant area of Richmond. But this might work to it's advantage since there was less choices in the area. The food is fabulous!! We eat a lot of northern Chinese food and this is definitely on point. Ordered their specialties, xia long bao and pan fried pork buns. So good! The XLB were made perfectly. Thin dough, juicy filling and retained it's soup the whole time. I don't like XLB skins that are thick with dough so this was great. The filing can be a tad more that that's minor. The pan fried buns were crunchy on the bottom, soft on top and juicy inside. Great balance and texture. We also had own pork and chives dumplings and hot and sour soup. Both great. A tad on the pricy side but amazing quality! I'll be back for sure. read more

This gem is located in an industrial part of Richmond. I showed up to meet up with a friend for lunch. I am not sure about the coffee, but the quality of the food is great. The pricing is reasonable and they accept credit card. The xiao long bao was nicely made and full of porky juice. The wrapper skin was thin but just thick enough not to break apart when picking up each bao with chopsticks. The wontons in spicy chilli oil were also very good - not too spicy but a kick of peanut flavour. The shrimp, egg and chives dumplings were alright. It was worth trying once but I preferred the xiao long bao or wontons more. Lastly, the shanghai fried noodles were loaded with veggies and chicken. DAYUM! This place is truly a hidden gem. Behind Ironwood plaza in the industrial area you'd find the most delicious XLB (Xiao Long Bao aka soup dumplings) ever. The skin is super thin and does NOT rip when picked up. The juice filled dumplings are flavourful and the meat was cooked just right. Definitely better the michellin star Din Tai Fung. - $6.99 The pan fried buns ($6.99) are good too. Also super juicy on the inside. These babies need about 30 mins wait time though. Where I sat I saw the owner (I'm assuming) making them to order. We also tried the sichuan styled chicken ($8.99). It's a bit spicy and not overly numbing. The chicken was tender and smooth. I need to come here more often. Oh and they accept credit card! Bonus points right there! read more

Loving this place. Tucked away behind Ironwood, this place is the definition of hidden gem. I've been coming weekly since discovering this place. The XLB is delish- you HAVE to order this. It's better than Dinesty in my opinion. Also tried the Shanghai wonton soup, onion beef pancake roll, tomato egg soup and Shanghai stir fry noodle. All the above are in order of tastiness. Service is good. But I wish they served hot tea instead of just water. read more

I don't often give a high star rating but his one simply deserves it. Here why: No MSG in their food! The Shanghai Juicy Dumplings were on point! Just add a drop of Vinegar from the bottles on each table and bam, your in Xiao Long Bao heaven! Stewed Eggplant dish was plentiful and tasty! NO cheaping out on ingredients The stewed beef pancake was ok but could have used some more sauce in the roll but besides that it was good. I know that if I'd asked for sauce on the side, they would have given it. Green tea is in a large mug with a tea bag SUPER friendly mama owner - polite, chatty, simply a nice person, business owner. Yes, this place is hard to find but it's sort of worth it for the XLB if you work in the area. But that's it ... especially since you're going out of your way to drive through an industrial park. To clarify, while the XLB are good there are many other restaurants both in Richmond and Vancouver that serve the same quality. What was extremely disappointing was the value and taste of the other dishes we tried. All the dishes are small but you're paying around $13-15. The dishes look like it was meant to feed one small person. Their target market is obviously people who work in the area and since lunch options within walking radius of the industrial park are limited this is better than not eating. The cashew chicken, other than tiny, was overly salty. It was packed with onions to fill up the space. The shredded chicken noodle dish was also tiny, again much too oily and salty, and the shredded chicken was hard to find. Was the restaurant running out of chicken that day??? Lots of cabbage to fill up the space. This is a trick a lot of restaurants do to fill up the space on the plate - lots of cheaper shredded vegetables We left hungry and didn't want to spend another cent here. The place is decorated nicely on the inside but I wouldn't make a special trip to come here. The restaurant should be renamed "Mama saw you coming!" to reflect the poor value and quality of the food. read more
