I work downtown and have never been to Mama's went last Friday and wasn't sure what to expect...there was a little wait to get a table but it was totally worth the wait...the service was fast and the food was great! The food was great but there was a waitress there that was the rudest person I have ever come in contact with. She is a shorter woman with short blondish brown with a bit of a reddish tint. We had 8 people in our party and we were going to split up the ticket and she made the comment saying "For Real" very snappy like and super rude. In the end we paid all on one ticket. read more

Get there early or you're going to wait! It fills up quickly for lunch. The service is quick and very friendly. I ordered the country fried steak & mashed potatoes with Mac & cheese and candied yams for my sides. The Mac & cheese was fairly bland and watery, while the candied yams were very "candied". What a gem of a place. We were driving back from Fort Walton Beach to New Orleans and decided to grab lunch in Mobile, Al. Mama's is situated in what looked like the heart of downtown Mobile. We were lucky to find parking half a block away. The restaurant was busy but we were able to get seated right away. Our server, Julie, was great! Quick, friendly and very nice. We ordered the shrimp and grits, fried fish plate and fried shrimp plate. My son says it was the best shrimp and grits he'd ever had. The food was fantastic. Tried Mama's On Dauphin for quick lunch. Service was friendly and efficient. Menu is straightforward southern cooking; a lot of deep-fried/ heavy stuff. HUGE portions. Food came out quickly but was lacking in overall taste and texture... Most of their food must be pre-made and has been sitting in a warmer. Not fresh. I had a fried green tomato BLT with 2 sides. Sandwich bread was toasted on one side but the other side was super soggy. It lacked flavor. It saddens me when fried food is served warm or room temperature. It should be served hot and fresh. I'm not sure if I just ordered the wrong thing, came in on a bad day, or WHAT was the deal. Staff was very friendly. But food was very underwhelming and a waste of money. I ordered the chicken finger platter with mac&cheese, cabbage, and the fries it came with. The fries were ok, nothing special. The cabbage was bland, and my chicken fingers were room temp. I told the server and she went to get me a plate to have them "dropped in the grease," after I'd already explained that they tasted reheated. I asked her for fresh ones, which she got for me. They were piping hot this time. Why couldn't they have given me fresh tenders initially? Anyway, although hot, they still were gross - even though she said they have good tenders. My husband ordered fried catfish, coleslaw, and mac&cheese. He was so dissatisfied with the food that he left half the food on the plate - something I don't think I've ever seen him do! read more

Great food! Gumbo, crab cake platter, and fried shrimp platter were all wonderful. I got a side order of fruit for my toddler and the grapes were bad. You'd think someone would notice that when they were filling the fruit cup. We were a party of three and it took a long time to get our food, but didn't appear to take as long for other people. I had gotten a cup of gumbo and was thinking it would come first (attempt at holding the toddler over), but it was forgotten and didn't come until after our meal was out and i reminded the server. I couldn't say anything earlier because no one came by our table between when we ordered food and when it arrived. Food was delicious though and the servers were very polite and nice. The food is good but they appear to run a bait and switch on the daily specials they run out of the daily specials almost every day at 12:30 now it's not rocket science to figure out how many specials you need you might run short on a few days but with this place it's everyday which tells me it is intentional they cop an attitude if you say anything about it as well read more

Actually would go 3.5; but didn't have that option. We stopped by for lunch while travelling. We ordered po-boys and the po-boys were great. The sides on the other hand were not as impressive. The fried okra looked like it came from the frozen foods section. Turnip greens were good. Fries were good as well. Only dessert available was the banana pudding, which we skipped. If you are in the mood for wonderful comfort food at a great price, you cannot beat Mama's. I wish they would serve brunch on the weekend. I think I have now tried everything on the menu, and I have enjoyed it all. I take all my out of town guests here and they all have loved it. You may have to wait a few minutes to get a table due to its popularity with the downtown lunch crowd. read more

This reataurant is GREAT! This is 1 of the 1st places I ate when I started working downtown in latter part of 2008. The portions are "too much" , the price is very reasonable & the taste is awesome. I've even ordered out enough to feed my family on no cooking days!!!! read more

As I travel for work, I'm always on the search for something new. I avoid the chains as much as possible and head to the small local joints. This one was recommended but I was sadly disappointed. Considering the shape of it, the chicken fried steak was clearly a frozen, pre-made product. Green beans were under-seasoned and the portion of mashed potatoes was pitiful. We visited Mama for the first time after seeing them in the Mobile Bay magazine for there fried chicken. I must say if you want to try the fried chicken or banana pudding get there early, they sale out fast. I didn't get to try it on this trip to Mama's but I will return back. Had lunch with a coworker while in town on business. This was near the conference center so we hit it up for an early lunch. The waitress told us that everyone raves about the chicken n dressing so that's what I ordered. If I had to use one word to describe mama's it would be disappointing. The service was terrible! Our waitress was inattentive and obviously unhappy to be working. The food was cold, flavorless, and not what we ordered. I had requested the red beans and rice special. My girlfriend ordered the fried chicken. I don't know why the waitress asked what sides we wanted because she obviously just brought us whatever was lying around. If we were not in such a rush to get back to Texas we would have complained. To top off our experience at mama's, we were joined by another diner towards the end of our meal. As I took a sip from my coffee, I turned my head to see a roach crawling along the wall next to us. So I loved this place! You really get bang for your buck. If you are looking for a fancy pants dining establishment this place is not it. I was down from Cincinnati visiting friends. It was recommended that we walk along Dauphin street which I enjoyed. The Peanut shop guy recommended Mama's for lunch. I was not impressed. The service was prompt and maybe to prompt as our lunch came out within five minutes. The chicken fingers and gumbo where good. The crab cake croissant was not very good. We have tasted better crab cakes frozen at our local grocery store. The mac and cheese was cold and the okra was just ok. I could go to Golden Coral for better okra. The waitress wasn't friendly and huffed when we asked for a window seat. The manager did ask us how our meal was I and did tell him what the thoughts were. Offered us dessert in which I declined. I hope he took our feedback for improvement. I don't think I will try Mama's again when in town. read more
