Wonderful little noodle house near Strong hospital. Parking is plentiful, which is great. Service is quick and friendly and the food is delicious. I ordered a rice noodle salad with chicken. The dressing made it fantastic. The dressing sits on the bottom and is topped by rice noodles, then some veggies and basil and sprinkled with peanuts. So good! Service is great but I was disappointed the Asian yam noddle soup has changed and not worth the money. It was just a small bowl of clear broth and a couple of boiled small bundles of noodles which I could have made myself. I decided to also try their Mamasan noodles but I found the flavor was off and not to my liking. I have also felt their prices have increased and not worth what the dishes are. The food is delicious and unique, a long time ago in a different location they would wait on you. Now it's an order and then take a seat kind of place where you pretty much serve yourself and bus your own dishes! Get your own water, etc. To me it's probably best to just get it to go! read more

This is a Rochester favorite of mine. From Union St/University Ave in the early 2000's then to Monroe Ave and now on Mt. Hope Ave -- the recipes have not changed!!! The food has been consistently good and I always know that what I'm going to get is going to taste the same as it did the first time I ever ordered it (and I've circulated the menu a few times). My favorite is generally a chicken rice dish (sweet and spicy or tamarind) because you get so much juicy chicken for a great price. The current location is more of a takeout style restaurant versus the previous family dine-in restaurant. Either way, they've created a nice ambiance using the same artwork. A Vietnamese Thai place with good options. Slightly pricier options than their neighbors SEA. Vietnamese crepe was a good choice to try bc it's not a common appetizer found in most places. Essentially a yellow pancake made from flour/mungbean? that has beansprouts, lettuce, tender chicken in the middle. This dish is is mild in flavor and relies on the sweet sour sauce to bring its flavor out. This is a large enough pancake to be a meal itself but definitely a filling appetizer if you're splitting it. Also got the Pad Xi; we were curious what this was since we've had the other pads like pad Thai, pad see ew etc. This dish was also pretty good- the sweetness of all the dishes here was a bit much for me. SE cooking is known for its sweet sour and complex tastes, but this place leans towards the sweeter end for its dishes. Sesame noodle was also a decent appetizer. A good light meal but it was a little too noodle-y to me. I think this dish would do better if it had more toppings to add more texture, because the uniform noodles and flavor made this dish a little bland. Overall a decent place. It has a slightly americanized sweeten overtone to all its dishes. owner is nice however and service is pretty fast. If you like your thai/viet foods sweet, recommend this place. read more

I stopped by for takeout lunch- didn't realize Mamasan's had landed here in the Collegetown area! Bea the owner took my order- I always liked their Thai Curry- so I ordered the vegetarian tofu version. Although the tofu wasn't fried crispy as I like- the flavor and tastes were on point as I remember they were. It came with a side of white Jasmine rice. The food came out hot, but had very little flavor. 3 out of 4 requested spicy, they were all rather bland and needed lots of siracha to add flavor. They've moved to 1400 Mt Hope. You can call ahead and get your order to go. You can walk in or use the existing drive-thru for this. You can not order in the drive through. I'm a bad yelper and didn't get any pictures because it was a "I'm hungry now" moment! There is a small parking lot for them and other shared parking towards the back. Watch out for the insane Starbucks drive through next door! I phoned my order in and it was ready when I got there 15 minutes later. I ordered shrimp spring rolls, a beef satay and the calamari salad. I enjoyed all of it. I do think there could have been a bit more calamari in the salad though. The best Pad Thai in Rochester that I've tried so far in terms of flavor! Still not quite the same as what I've had in NYC/NJ though. The inside is very spacious with lots of tables. I was not a fan of the pork in the egg roll vermecilli. (It had the hard crunchy balls of fat if that makes sense) I was also yelled at for using there parking lot at 1st when I got out of my car. I came for lunch, and did not car much for my meal. I came with my mom, and wanted to try the Banh xeo (Vietnamese crepe) with shrimp. It was okay, but Banh xeo is supposed to be eaten by wrapping it in lettuce or rice paper and dipping it in fish sauce. All we got was chopped up bits of iceberg lettuce. I got a bowl of Pho, and again, it was okay. The broth was subpar, no jalapenos with given, there were no meatballs, and they didn't have good Asian soup spoons! I also asked for a small dish for hoisin and sriracha sauce to dip my meat in, and the man helping us had no idea what I was talking about. Conclusion? Fresh Spring Rolls, to me and Mamasan's, actually mean the fresh and springy kind (Rice paper, shrimp, bean sprout, basil, side of addictive peanut sauce). Not the fried, oily vegetable kind (although fried and not oily is also a menu option). Finding a restaurant that understands a good spring roll, finding...my RollMate, if you will...in Mamasan's, makes life (and my belly) more full...it makes me want Mamasan's to meet my family (who I've recently learned sometimes hang with Mamasan's without me!). They usually get the sweet, zesty, and colorful Pineapple Chicken Rice Dish, with coveted green beans and pineapple chunks. I swear by the Thai Curry Chicken Rice Dish, which is curry and peanuty, smoothed out with coconut milk, and accented with broccoli and fried onions, and topped with a peanut sprinkle. (Amazing leftovers). Sometimes I order the Young Coconut drink, picking up and eating the chunks of fresh coconut out of my glass with a straw. But they also provide water on the table, if you don't want to play with your drink order. Mamasan's makes me want it to be closer to my work so we could see each other during the day...(bring back Mamasan's Express, please)! For now, I'll cherish our dinners together. The spa-like interior, with arty furniture and low lighting will instantly bring you into zen-and-eat mode.
