tl:dr the food is okay. Beware they get stuff wrong a lot The rice will be burned or undercooked most of the time The service is so horrible it needs all new staff. Always driving by this busy place I thought it would be super good. I've maybe order take out three or four times from here and the first two times it was so great! Note this is over a six month period. Each time it got worse and worse and worse! The first time I ordered the #4 which is 15 fried shrimp with fries. And we got an extra side of rice to share. It was so good I couldn't wait to finish it the next day! The next time they service was not good, they basically ignored us when we walked in and I stood there at the counter for 15 mins waiting for someone to ring me up. The lady who rung me up was rude and I didn't tip her BC I was licking up and she didn't do anything! The time after that, I sent my friend in who is Hispanic and she was out in five mins flat! We left happy that it didn't take so long but then when we got home the rice was burned and part of it was undercooked! It tasted kinda okay if you could get over the nasty burned after taste (not) The next time I went which was last week I went in with my friend and the guy at the register was Jose and he was very rude, trying to talk to us yet would pick up the phone and talk to other employees while helping us. He rung us up for the wrong order first then when we told him it was wrong he proceeded to print out the receipt and tell us the total over and over. After the issue was fixed we paid and they told us to stand at the counter. We stood at the counter for almost 20 mins, with everyone ignoring us! We even asked if we could have our food and the lady we asked took our receipt found our food and still wouldn't give it to us!! We were both sitting there like wtf is going on. Finally after my friend yelling at one of the cashiers they gave us our food. They messed up our order but we were so hot we decided to just deal with it. The food was better than its ever been since the first time we ate there! The shrimp was prefect and so was the rice! But the service is so freaking bad I will never be going to this location ever again. read more

But keep in mind that one day you will find yourself at Mambo's in your jeans and flip flops; gobbling down tasty fried rice, almost any kind of fish (gar? seriously? YES and YUM!) and ice cold beer and having another experience all together! This is a downhome, eat outside, wipe your hands on the paper towels that are on the table kinda place and it is goooood. The waitstaff is perfect for a garage bar and if you want to be treated like royalty you might want to brush up on your high school Spanish. Delivery time is terrible. My order was taken by phone at 5:58 but it took more than 40 minutes because after I paid they made me wait about 10 more minutes. When I opened the bag at home the empanadas where not there. I understand they have a large number of orders but this doesn't justify their awful service and having only partial orders. A very casual restaurant. The decor is like "Caribbean beach shack", but the prices are more like "high end seafood". I had to wait forever for service, but told the server that I wanted salmon, a salad, and french fries. She recommended the salmon platter, which came with veggies (grilled peppers, corn, and potatoes), and a side salad. The fries never came, but getting extra vegetables in the salad and the dish and avoiding french fries is probably healthier anyway. The beers were cold but the food was just so so. The decor, pricing, and service, never redeemed the average food, thus the three stars. read more

Never again! I've passed by this place a number of times and have seen the parking lot FULL. Which gave me high hopes for what was inside. I soon realized that it had less to do with the food and more to do with the staff. The food truly is not worth my time to review. It tasted as thou the person(s) cooking were depressed, sad or angry.... lack of real flavor, over cooked until dried out, rice.... burnt, calamari the worst I've had in years. I won't mention the fries since they are only there as supporting cast... they aren't supposed to "good". The chicken, butterfly shrimp and roasted vegetables were the best parts of the meal, no real complaint there. I'm sure there are other menu items that are tasty but I'm really not willing to spend my money to find out. Remember, this is just one fat boys opinion. I have a long-standing love affair with Mambo. I've been coming here for years and I continue to come here for the inexpensive but delicious seafood. Protip: - I almost always order the #1, which comes with 2 pc of fish, 6 shrimp, shrimp fried rice, and a dinner roll for a whopping 7 bucks - Drinks! I like their margaritas but I hear the micheladas are tasty too (not a Bloody Mary fan) - If you order the fried rice by itself, get a reg size, NOT the large - trust me, it's a ton of food - On Tuesdays, they offer 30 pc shrimp + fried rice for a special price (very good deal for 2-3 people) The service is decent. This is not my first or last stop to a Mambo's, but this was my first visit to this location. I don't know what it was, but this seems a bit more lively than most other locations. We had a slight wait for a table since it was packed, and they had to clear it off. I had my usual order: 6 fried shrimp, 1 stuffed crab, and fried rice for $6.99. If you want mediocre fried seafood and rice and cheap prices, this is it. I don't think this is delicious by any means, but this is what I wanted. I unfortunately decided to gram a Strawberry margarita while I was here, and I was completely disappointed. Don't bother with it. It's way too syrup-y sweet, and not worth it. At all. Food is good/cheap. I like their gumbo and rice. My problem with the mambo chain is service. (specifically airline and 290/Tidwell locations). At airline our server forgot our rice the entire dinner. She must have come back to our table at least 3 times saying "oh let me check on your rice" but we didn't get it til we were ready to pay and leave. But by then she disappeared and was nowhere to be found. We waited to make eye contact with anther server to request our check but still nothing. Went to the counter to ask to pay and the cashiers were too busy taking phone orders/servicing other people. Okay, fine! You don't want my money then? I should have just walked out from being so frustrated but I paid my tab and left. Thought I would get better service at the one on 290. Wrong! Server kept forgetting ketchup and straws. Disappeared to service her other tables inside and paid no attention to her tables on the patio. Other tables were literally passing around ketchup bottles and packs of sugar to each other. Was ready to pay and server was still nowhere to be found. In the future they should close off sections or assigned their servers sections!! We always spend an extra 30-40 mins there trying to get tab and go In short, of you are okay with "okay" service and.good cheap seafood I recommend it. I used to love coming here to get my seafood fix. Went to the I45 location near West road in Aldine often. Was driving back through town and tried this location but found the service slow as they were very busy. The friendly staff were honest up front about how busy the kitchen was so not a big deal so the Houston traffic could subside a bit. We found the grilled basa fish and shrimp and the ceviche overcooked and leathery with a metallic taste especially in the fish. The portion of the mambo rice was smaller than I have had in the past but I had more of the popcorn shrimp and it was a little chewy. Many were there to purchase to go orders so they really were busy back there!. I wonder if they just bulk cook everything prior and just reheat when ordered for food safety. Not as good as it used to be and certainly less of a good value. May not be back. read more

No frills but diffidently holds it's own in the good, cheap seafood category. Im a regular here and my evening favorites are the ceviche and ice cold mugs for my beer. I always sit out on the patio on a nice day and relax to a delicious light dinner. For lunch I usually get the #1 fish, shrimp, and shrimp fried rice combo and a dozen oysters. The food is always consistent. My only complaint is that sometimes the waitresses seem to not be able to understand english or even the most common words on their own menu. This is a quaint little place that is about 2 steps above Joe's Crab Shack. i was prepared to be underwhelmed, the look is unassuming and they weren't crowded like Willy's Ice House, the expectations were low. But, the food was good. Much better than the atmosphere led me to believe. I was expecting fried fish and boiled flavorless post, but it was tasty. I ordered the shrimp scampi with fried rice (yes, at a Mexican restaurant) and the rice was light and full of shrimp. The shrimp was well seasoned with little chunks of sautéed, crispy garlic and spices. I also like the relatively small size of the shrimp, they had good texture and held flavor well. The service was very prompt for fresh cooked food and the portion size was good. We were seated and served pretty quick, in the front it says to wait to be seated but the hostess told us we could pick where ever we wanted to sit. The booth that we chose to sit was a bit sticky. The food was decent I got the #2 (6piece shrimp with mambo rice) the rice was awesome. The micheladas and ritas are good too. I went to the 290 location today and had a very simple to go order, got home and realized my shrimp cocktail was missing. Now I understand accidents happen so I wasn't mad, just a little inconvenienced and hungry. I want back and asked the manager if he could re-make my #1 because I didn't want to eat cold fish, instead of re-making my food he just through a couple of new pieces of fish in the container with the same old shrimp. I would think as a manager one would be more accommodating when a mistake happens...maybe a free dessert, a coupon for my next visit, even an apology but none of those happened.
