I would say this is a mix of Mexican food and seafood. Had the salmon with mambo rice.It's interesting the mambo rice happens to be fried rice which I'm not saying it's a bad thing but I think, Cool! Place is loud. One TV had a soccer game on and another TV had an Oregon vs Oregon State but the commentary was taken off. Food was decent. Usually only come to this restaurant when I'm with family. Never really because the food is great. Anyways things usually go pretty smooth. But this time the wait for our food seemed ridiculous!!!! And before you think that they may have been busy... nope easily about 10 tables empty and the rest about 80% of them had their food. We got sat and about 10 minutes later 3 tables were sat as well(bigger parties) and we already know what we wanted so we order at the same time as we ordered our drinks. The other tables took their time and somehow our SAME waitress got THEIR food BEFORE we did. Needless to say about an hour and 15 minutes later we FINALLY got our food. My best friend introduced me to this place on a trip to Houston a few years back. I have since moved here to Houston. I'm going to be honest, Mambo's was one of the deciding factors in relocation. It's just that good! Now I don't go here nearly as much as I'd like seeing how I've been blessed with a girlfriend who despises seafood or anything that swims. Everytime I get the chance to go though, I am never disappointed. First off, the Micheladas are amazing. I always get one with Dos Equis and an oyster to start out. It normally grosses everyone out because it looks like a brain floating in a blood cup, but it is soo good! I normally get a #1 which is 2 pieces of fried fish, 6 fried shrimp and Mambo rice. If I really hate myself, I get fried Jalepeno's and a Mambo combo. everything is always perfect. Besides the food, the service is usually pretty good. My issue is I'm the only white guy in here 9 times out of 10 so I have to find the english speaking staff if I'm not here with a hispanic buddy. But I usuall have good luck if I sit at the bar. The only other issue I've had here is getting a little sick one time out of probably 75. I have reason to believe that was partially payback though. We had gone here one night and had a bunch of Micheladas. I was single at the time and a friend of a friend decided it would be funny to try to get the manager lady and I together. He apparently provided her with my phone number which I wasn't aware of. A couple weekends later I got some random texts from a number I didn't know claiming to be this particular manager. I figured it was the friend of the friend so I decided to be more colorful with my comments while playing along acting like I actually thought I was talking to the manager. There was a bit of alcohol involved so i painted a pretty vivid picture of excatly what type of disgusting scenarios I was looking for in a female companion. Apparently, I was actually texting the manager. dispite my best efforts of disguise, she still recognised me 2 months later. I can't say that wasn't a bit deserved though, lol. All my other experiences though- AWESOME! Everyone I've brought here who actually likes fish always wants to go back. I was very confused about the ordering/seating process when I first arrived. No one greeted me but nevertheless, the food was good. The cerviche was NICE. Took the family to this place for dinner on our way back from Baton Rouge, because the wife and I had seen it several times on our way through Houston, and we're always looking for some good seafood. My oldest stepson ordered tilapia on one of their bargain plates and it actually came out as a whole tilapia, which was the first time he had ever eaten fish like that. He was the only one I think who had a unique experience there. Their mambo rice they market as being so good actually tasted just like fried rice you can get at ANY Chinese restaurant or buffet. It wasn't authentic at all. The place itself looked nice and had its own seafood market inside and everything, and seemed good for families and happy hour, but just the food wasn't that impressive and tasted kind of bland. The whole time I sat eating with the family, I was thinking, this is okay, but not great. We've certainly been some better places that had better quality seafood than this. And again, all of this fried fish and shrimp seems to be a Texas thing, but I prefer my fish and shrimp be grilled and I had grilled fish fillets but even they didn't have much of any taste to them. Bottom line is, Houston is filled with good eats. This is one of my least favorite places I've eaten in Houston. I recommend somewhere else. Back to the drawing board! read more

My husband and I have been to this location numerous times. The food is good but the service wait time is terrible! We even started playing a game where we set a timer to see how long it takes a server to acknowledge us, and then see how long it takes to get our food. It seems to get worse every time. We actually just walked out after waiting at our table for over 10 minutes and no one came by. There were plenty of waitstaff hanging around and it wasn't even busy. The waitstaff always looks confused/disoriented. They don't seem to have "sections" that they are responsible for and instead have tables all over the restaurant. That's not efficient. If you decide to dine here, expect a long wait. read more

I stop here for lunch a couple of times a month. My company has started buying Mambo's "Family Packs" for our company luncheons. Our employees love the food. (if fact Mambo's is there favorite place to get for our luncheons) Our management loves the price. We can feed about 32 employees for less than $250 bucks at Mambo's. Let me be clear about what these 5 stars are for, the Michelada's. Best in town, bar none. The service is either great or tolerable. Never completely terrible. I usually will go around noon and there is plenty of seating. The rice is to die for though the original style of rice like this started at Connie's off of 45 just north of downtown. A majority of the food is like an upscale version of seafood fast food and it's not bad at all. Fish is flaky and tender. Shrimp is butterflied open. The stuffed crab has more stuff than crab. The caldo de gumbo is awesome and best ordered with a side of fried rice. Over all, I love it. Cold Micheladas and fried rice. Can't go wrong. read more

I went in for lunch on a Friday. We arrived around noon and we sat in their outdoor patio area. The weather was on our side and they had more than enough seating outside. Inside was a bit packed, but it was expected being lunch time. We were greeted nicely and received our order very fast. 6 fried shrimp, shrimp fried rice and a roll for $4.98. First time going. we drove 2 hrs to try. Our waitress was super nice kept checking up on us even though the place was packed she made sure we were happy. Prices were good compared to other seafood joints. The food was really good rice & stuffed crab was my fave and hubby had the Revuelve aLa Vida Soup. He Luved it... The manager guy even passed and checked on all the tables which is nice. Over all It was really great. A little hot but not unbearable. Maybe bc its so muggy outside. But it was well worth out drive. WORST SERVICE EVER! Our waitress was very sweet but didn't pay attention to our table and as well our table was still dirty from the previous family and usually our food is on point but this time around the rice was just cold and you could tell the food was just sitting there waiting to be brought for a bit. As well they hardly poured any michelada mix in our glass!! My family was excited to experience mambos and unfortunately they were disappointed. Don't think I'll be returning for a while. My family comes here often and I always pick up their orders. They typically make me wait, and I understand it is always busy. No big deal. Today though, I called at 5PM.. I did not get my food till it was almost 6PM. Funny how when I said I wanted a refund, my food was automatically ready till I said something? The food at Mambos is really good!! I definitely recommend the fried Mojarra ($7.99) and the grilled fish fillets with shrimp on skewers ($13.99). First time here. Dulce was our waitress. Service was excellent. Food was better than expected. I wouldn't say that it is 5 star food, but it isn't trying to be. It's more like excellent family food and atmosphere. Definitely delicious and perfectly priced. Stop in for lunch or bring the kids... Maybe even bring a laid back group of friends for fish and beer. I ate the cilantro -lime tilapia and wanted to lick the sauce bowl. I also tried the shrimp scampi and was extremely impressed.. Will probably order that next time.
