Mamma Mias is one of our favorite Italian restaurants for delicious food, great service and atmosphere! My husband had the Ossobucco and gnocchi in a Marsala sauce, I had the Chicken Marsala and our friend had the scallops with clams and mussels served with spaghetti. Our dinners were delightful but the clams were a bit sandy. Not clearing the sand from a seafood dish can really spoil on appetite. The appetizer of fried burratta cheese with tomato gravy was really good too. Dessert, Tiramisu and the Limoncello cake were devine! The service is always good and we would have spoken to the staff about the clams but our friend just didn't want to bother. We got there early when it was not very crowded but by the time we left almost every table was taken. Although the clams weren't the best, we will go back and we'd recommend. I think the clams were a mishaps that wouldn't repeat but of course until we speak with the staff don't know for sure. read more

Just moved to the area from Seattle with my partner and have been looking for a great local Italian place. Have had Mamma Mia bookmarked for a while and finally decided to visit. Wish we had gone there sooner! Met Tony upfront when I picked up our order and he couldn't have been a more welcoming, friendly, and good guy. Thick Italian accent so you know the food is going to be legit. Had the old style pizza, a create your own pasta, garlic knots and 2 pieces of death by chocolate cake. Couldn't have been more pleased. Didn't even originally order desert but saw it in the case and couldn't resist. Although I ordered to go, I strongly recommend dining there; people are friendly, ambiance is casual/intimate/warm. Will be making this our new favorite Italian place from now on. The minute we walked in, we felt comfortable and relaxed. This is owned and run by a true Napolitano. The staff were welcoming and knowledgeable about the menu. We found the choices were plentiful and look authentic based on our 4 years in Naples. The appetizer was bread and a dip made of olive oil and spices. We found it good, but they used local buns and not the hard Italian bread we expected. She had the chicken cacciatore, I had the veal scaloppine. Both were very good. I personally would add more lemon to the scaloppine, but that is my Peccadillo. The Pinot Grigio was quite good. Might be the best Italian food I've eaten in North Carolina. I got the lobster ravioli and it was phenomenal. We had a pizza for our table and I tried a slice and it was perfect. The bread they bring out is dangerous because it is so easy to fill up on the bread and ruin your appetite. The staff goes above and beyond to make you feel welcome as they are incredibly friendly. Ugh, ate here twice and tried 4 different dishes and they were all were gross. This is the worst Italian food I've ever had. The Olive Garden has better Italian food. Every dish is just loaded with salt and that's about it. The sauces are watery, and the food didn't have flavor or taste good. If you order pasta with a protein, they barely even put pasta in it. If you get pasta with chicken, it's just a pile of unseasoned chicken on top of a few noodles. Portions are small and the food isn't fresh either. The food is bad and extremely overpriced. Visited here in middle of week during evening hours. Was seated immediately. The decor is warm/inviting with high ceilings. Nice touch with the little table lamps. Noise level was very good, could hear each other speak. Wait staff were with us as soon as seated for drink order. Was also informed of the many specials available that evening. Our waitress was a little hard to understand as she had a very strong Italian accent. We ordered stuffed mushroom to start which came with a sausage/seasoning/bread crumb stuffing with a light brown gravy. The taste was good, especially with gravy. Bread with olive oil/spices arrived before our mushrooms. I ordered one of the specials of crab ravioli with a vodka type sauce. I could taste crab with every bite. My wife ordered a pasta dish with spinach, chicken and white sauce which she enjoy very much. All staff were pleasant from hostess, beverage server, waitress and buss staff. The food was good. I had the chicken parmigiana and mozzarella sticks. It was ok,...I think the sauce needs a little work on...I mean it tasted good. Just was missing something,...The table bread was very very good with the side of oil, herbs and balsamic. I would agree that the bread could have been a little warmer but overall the bread was crispy and soft. Mamma Mia has opened their second location in Downtown Holly Springs. They did not have their license to sell wine or beer when we visited so we were able to bring our own bottle of wine. We started off with the mozzarella alla caprese and bread. The oil dipping sauce for the bread was so flavorful. For our meals it was the lasagna with a caesar salad for my husband and the stuffed shells with pink sauce and a house salad for me. For dessert we split a cannoli. All of the food was really good. Had to try this place as it just opened on the block on main in downtown Holly Springs. I have had the Apex location so much has not changed. The waitstaff and owner (I believe) were great. Very quick service, waters were filled quickly and food was served very quick. They do start off your table with warm bread, this was a doughy bread with a mixture of oil/balsamic and spice blend. This oil was very flavorful and paired great with the warm doughy bread. Also note they are closed on Sunday's and don't have the lunch menu on Saturday's. For a main dish I had the chopped salad. It was a finely chopped salad with balsamic glaze on the bottom. It was very fresh but I felt that the size was a tad small. The meat on the top was a great paring of salty with the sweet dressing. Next time I would of added some sort of protein as I was not full after finishing it. Second we had chicken Parm. I was so surprised on the size. For the price it was a very small portion. We had it with penne which was so so small. Also the sauce was a tad sweet. This was the same as the apex location. The chicken was just one piece of chicken cutlet. The cutlet did have some great flavors but the sauce lacked flavor and was very thin. I guess I'm used to thicker sauce but it was extremely thin. For an overall review I don't think that we will be returning , maybe they are going thru some pains as they just opened but there was a lack of flavor on the food mixed with the portion size vs. the price. Not much change from the apex location. Much better choices in the area for Italian food. read more

We went for dinner with a larger party of 13 as someone was celebrating a birthday. The ambiance was just alright, not what I was expecting given the prices which seemed fairly high especially given the portion sizes, which were on the small side, TBH. The waitress was sweet but spilled piping hot liquid that splashed onto one of the guests, another guest had a drink spilled on him, and when she was clearing the appetizer course she spilled clam liquid on someone else. The food was very blandly flavored and not at all what we expected for Italian cuisine. Two of us had chicken dishes and both of us commented that the chicken was dry and tough and had no flavor. It tasted as though it had been boiled and then just had different sauces served with it. Personally, I'd look elsewhere for a good meal. Another new Italian restaurant option in Holly Springs just opened up! Mamma Mia is located in downtown Holly Springs. They do have another location in Apex. Our family of 4 waited about 20 minutes for a table. It wasn't too busy, but once seated many parties walked in. We had an appetizer of garlic knots which were delicious. The waiter also brought bread and dipping oil to the table so had realized I would've skipped the garlic knots. The marinara dipping sauce for the knots was very good. The table ordered a 16" plain pie (that's cheese for those not from NYC :) ) , Chicken Parmigiano, shrimp scampi and a kids meatballs with spaghetti. The chicken parm and scampi came with pasta..the lemon butter sauce for the scampi was really good. Perfect for bread dipping. I wish there had been more shrimp and some parsley. The pizza crust was very good. Crispy on the outside, but chewy on the inside. The service was very good and the wait staff was attentive. All in all our meal was good and service was excellent. If I was rating based purely on quality of entrees and ingredients, it would be a 5 star restaurant. Unfortunately the other side of food is flavor and presentation and for those, our order was deserving of a single star. Every pasta dish from the marinara to the béchamel posing as Alfredo was bland and tasteless. For an Italian restaurant and not a sliver of garlic, zero fresh basil and no oregano leaves me wondering who's preparing the food. I again stress, the quality was there, the flavor was not. My Alfredo was so bland, it was akin to thick cream than a sauce of garlic, cream and cheese. Will not be returning. read more

The red sauce is naturally sweet from the long cooking that caramelizes the natural goodness of Italian "pelati". Gosh - where even to begin? My wife Jane and I wanted to go out to a nice restaurant to celebrate our 43rd wedding anniversary. Like most folks, we had our favorites and were initially considering going to one of those. However, at the last minute, we decided to try a new place in Holly Springs called Mamma Mia's Italian Bistro. Their original restaurant opened in Apex a few years back and apparently since they've had so many avid followers and customers there, they recently opened a 2nd location on Main street in downtown Holly Springs. We arrived there early on a Thursday evening, around 4 PM. Upon arrival, we were treated to a delightfully decorated restaurant environment - the interior of which was styled in a contemporary fashion, yet very warm in atmosphere with various pastel colors throughout. They were also playing Christmas music (not the typical blaring rock music that you often find at some other eating establishments) and what struck you immediately was the warm, delightful atmosphere that Mamma Mia's exhibited. One of the real treats of our visit were the owners - a husband/wife team from Italy, and even the chef is Italian - making this a truly Italian eatery. The husband greeted us as we entered, and he had a hilarious sense of humor - definitely a very jovial character. Our waitress was wonderful also, and this place had a nice touch of class. Alright - now on to the food! They had a special the night we came - two entrées (your choice off the menu) and a bottle of wine. Now, the wine choices were limited to this special, but the bottle of Chardonnay we ordered - which was of Italian origin - was absolutely outstanding. My wife ordered the veal picotta and I had a dish involving jumbo shrimp, linguine, sautéed with a white wine sauce, butter, and garlic. Our son had the Linguine with clams and a white wine/garlic sauce. All of our dishes were tastefully prepared and, like superb Italian food, "garlic" was a major additive to all the dishes. Everything was superbly prepared. The bread they provide you with was just right - nice and doughy in the center, while crispy on the outside - and the dipping oil came in a small bowl comprised of a mix of olive oil with roasted red peppers, balsamic glaze, and garlic - which resulted in a unique, gourmet-like taste. And let me tell you, it was difficult to stop eating the bread. My wife and I just kept looking at each other with delight because it was obvious that we stumbled onto a new gem in downtown Holly Springs. We live in Fuquay-Varina, and I can tell you that we definitely will be coming back again - and soon! So in summary, although there are a plethora of Italian restaurants popping up these days, Mamma Mia's is a gem of a discovery. Mix in a very pleasant and tastefully decorated surrounding and ambiance - then add friendly and warm owners (yes, real Italians my friends), and other employees - then add in superb food offerings... Well, you get the jest here - give them a try. In closing, it is important to note that tastes of any kind (whether food, music, and especially politics) are subjective, and no two folks will typically agree. Yet, usually, a major way of getting the word out about a restaurant is through word of mouth - whether that be good or bad. As long-time "foodies," my wife (who is also a gourmet cook) thoroughly enjoyed Mamma Mia's, and we strongly recommend this wonderful eating locale. read more

We tried this place a Saturday. There is no lunch menu on the weekends. The staff was great, very attentive and knowledgeable. They start you off with some nice bread which comes with a very flavorful oil and balsamic mixture. I could eat this sauce all day. Next came the main entrees. i usually as being from up north can judge an italian restaurant on its chicken parmigiana. For almost $17 it was the smallest portion of chicken parm i've ever had. You are served one piece of chicken with literally a small portion of cooked pasta. The flavors were good but the sauce appeared it was just pizza sauce thrown on chicken with some mozzarella cheese on top. It definitely lacked anything special. We also had a salad and again the portion was small. Lastly we had another pasta dish, the sauce again tasted like just plain sweet pizza sauce. You can tell by the consistency of it that it was not marinara sauce. Overall there is much better Italian food in holly springs (one down the block is much better) that are less expensive and have much better portion size. I did read this as well on the reviews for there apex location so not much has changed. For the price and portion size we will not be returning. read more
