Dec 2022 Sunday lunch visit with a group of 15. A group member called in advance of our arrival. The restaurant had our table ready, complete with plates and utensils ready. Everyone placed their order at the counter and went to the table. The restaurant was moderately busy, but the counter, kitchen, and wait staff were working efficiently. I ordered the cheese ravioli and added grilled chicken to it. My order along with all others at the table was delivered with a reasonable wait time. When in strombolis do as they do in Stromboli so I ordered a Florentine stromboli. It was perfectly cooked with a thin crispy crust and a cheesy filling with a bit of tomato and spinach. This is Cafe style so you order at the register and then you sit at a table until they serve your dish. The waitress brought over three bread rolls with butter as I was pouring my drink. I should have known the food was going to be problematic when the bread came and it was terrible. It was doughy (not cooked enough) and maybe needed salt. It was tasteless, I think this is the first time in my life that I didn't eat the whole roll. OK, onto the main dish. I was with a big party and they must have thought it was more important to bring out everyone's food at one time, so my food was not hot. And when I went up to let her know that I saw someone else who ordered the same item as me and their food had steam coming out of it as it was just cooked. Why couldn't that have been my food. Nothing that they did (she said they put it back in the pan) or a microwave, but it still came back to me not very hot and it tasted bad. I have been going to this restaurant since they opened and it has gone steadily down hill the last few years. I stopped using them 3 years ago and just recently tried again. They offer counter service only. They have a specials board right when you walk in. They had a few options like a slice and a drink, a slice and a salad, or 2 slices and a drink. I went for two slices of cheese and a drink. The staff was very pleasant and all had smiles on their faces. They promptly took my order. They offer a basket of bread with every order which I declined. They give you a number and you seat yourself. My order was up within 5 minutes. The pizza is NY style, thin crust, but not to the the point where they were floppy when folded in half. My slices were a good temperature as many places serve them too hot. The taste was above average although I thought the crust could have been better. I usually eat my crust, not today, it wasn't doing it for me. The staff definitely had some hustle. They had a number of tables occupied, but by no means were they packed. Regardless, staff members were moving quickly to ensure people were getting their food without delay. The service and atmosphere pushed my rating to a 4. I would definitely return to try some other menu items. read more

I placed a carry out order with this company. I called the order in and the lady was very polite and efficient in taking my selections. She repeated them back and made sure the order was correct. She said the order will be ready in 20 minutes. I arrived and walked through the doors, I was greeted right away. " Welcome to Stromboli's ". I said I was here for a carry out order. she said my name and got my order. It was just out of the kitchen and nice and hot she said. The dining area was nice and very clean. No problem parking, but may have on a weekend. The food was excellent ( Cal-zones ) . They did not short nay in the middle of the Cal-zone. They were golden brown and done to perfection. This used to be my go to place for good pizza but they have been so inconsistent the past few times I've ordered from them. (Burned crust, underdone crust, overall taste, etc.) (not to mention the extremely rude person I dealt with while placing a carry out order) The last straw was placing a large lunch order for a work meeting a few months ago. Our office is 5 minutes from their restaurant and the pizzas arrived cold, and salads were missing from the order. Stromboli's has the potential to be a Greek Tragedy (That would be ironic given it is an Italian Restaurant), but it has become the makings of a Meg Ryan Meets Tom Hanks Love Story. We are so happy for that. This restaurant is not on a main highway. It is in a small strip mall It does a lot of take out so there are folks in and out (Letting in quite a draft in the Winter) It is one room with a fountain help yourself soda station and you have to order at the counter so the thought of high quality, doesn't scream out at you. Let's suspend all that for a minute. The warm bread and olive oil they bring to your table while you wait is mouth watering good. The open face kitchen and brick pizza oven gives a smell you can't refuse. The portions are ridiculously big (Expect to take some home) The creativity is kinda awesome. I had this tortellini and shrimp in a creamy pesto. Holy Mama Mia. So good. So so good. So what makes this place work, beside quality hidden behind a small hole in the water Italian joint? Partnerships!!! They are aligned with a number of local high schools and honestly, we dined there because my father had a booster coupon from a school function offering a discount, so why not. If you enjoy wood fired pizza..this is a restaurant to try! I have been there a few times now and always dined in. They can accomodate large parties by putting tables together. I get the impression that alot of nearby school athletic teams eat there because of the pictures on the wall. The staff is nice and I love how open the kitchen is. My lil one likes to sit on the bar stools and watch thru the glass as the pizza maker prepares the pizza before it goes in the wood fire oven. The pizza is delicious and tasty. The right balance of crust vs sauce vs cheese ..everytime. Our favorite pizza to share is the Sorrento which is made with fresh mushrooms and sausage. This was the first restaurant I experienced after moving to Raleigh in 2009. I was part of a group of regulars who ate there every Sunday night. The food is decent (at least as decent as counter service Italian gets), and the service was good largely because we were regulars and the manager kept an eye out to take good care of us. Sadly, last September, the owner abruptly chose to close the store on Sundays. His official response was that the regulars could come another night if we wanted to eat there. We've been back once since. The owner's entitled attitude towards his customers alone was a turnoff. We're not his employees. We go when it's convenient for us, not him. A few months before, he raised the prices, citing rising costs of running the business, yet he chose to close on what was one of his most profitable nights. We went back once last December, and the quality was already on the slide--both food and facility. Portions were smaller, and the service time was a lot longer. The regular manager wasn't there, and the girl running the shift treated us like we were a hindrance. In the three years I ate there, no money went into maintaining most of the building, and it had started to show by that point in time. The bathrooms were run down, and the orange sponge painting on gray walls is terribly dated. The decor was sun faded on the inside. We ate at Strombolis because of the sense of community there, the friends and family that gathered each week. The manager and staff were like extended family. Now that our "family" night has been discontinued, it's just an ordinary Italian restaurant serving up semi-prepared, microwaved food and frozen appetizers thrown in the deep-fryer. In the end, it's a case study in how to run a successful business into the ground. It's now an Olive Garden with a rotating cast of characters working behind the counter. read more

I normally go to this location 2-3 times a week. I just had my worst experience on Tuesday of this week. The girl at the register and the lady that cook normally are great. I went on Tuesday and got the same thing I always get but the same cook was out. Paid 15.00 for some chicken Alfredo because it was too dry. I went upfront and asked If I could get more sauce the man at the front said it's only made with the order. I said OKAY!! He came over to look at it and said oh yeah that is dry. I left the plate was still hungry, wasted my money and went back to work. I wasn't offered another order or anything. I didn't want my money back, I just wanted some sauce. Not enough Staff! With covid across the U.S. staffing has been difficult but they were not honest about it. We were told to pick up our food at a current time and ended up waiting an hour+ at the restaurant for it. More and more orders kept coming in it was chaos they couldn't keep up. Absolutely, amazing pizza. My brother order the Margharita Pizza with every veggies you can think of. But now that he is vegan I don't know that he going to order next time hmm. I feel the need to update my review, because I see a definite decline in service and food quality. I used to be able to come at lunch time and get in and out in a reasonable time. The last few times here we waited over 20 minutes for food. As usual my husband orders the chicken calabrese which he enjoys. This time after waiting 20 minutes it arrived at our table with only 1 chicken breast included, and a smaller one at that. Usually this dish includes 2 nice size chicken breasts. Having waited so long for our food, my husband refused to make a big deal of this and ate it anyway. There is never a manager who walks around to see if everything is ok either. I think given the choices I have, it best to go elsewhere now for lunch given how slow the service has become and how the "standards" of quality have slipped. read more

Anyway, the food quality was pretty good, fresh tasting, not greasy, but the portions were sparse. When we arrived to pick up order, we were greeted in a timely manner and entertained by the dough maker tossing pizza dough flying saucers in the air... The total wait was about 25-30 mins as we were told. Looking around the dining area, it hints that they just had a mad rush because every unoccupied table in the restaurant was littered with dirty plates, pizza stands and cups. I promise this is the best bread you'll ever have thay are so good that they cater for twi schools.
