On a Friday, a craving for Gluten Free pizza. I typed into Yelp and first place listed was Mezza Luna. Of course, I could drive to local grocery store and get a frozen one and bake it at home.....but I was quite hungry! It took longer getting directions between a Nav and phone sync. Surprisingly, Mezza Luna is actually conveniently located in a short trip! I arrived in person and walked to the counter. I was greeted promptly and the guy was answering 2 phones and taking orders and gave me options based on time and wait for pizza. He did not realize that I was looking for gluten free and got a gentleman to help me. My apologies, as I was a bit overwhelmed and didn't catch his name and how long he said it would be. Regardless, I am a patient person and waited. The gentleman brought the pizza box and handed it to me. The inside restaurant has positioned seating to utilize the space very well. As the clock approaches 5 o'clock, the regular patrons come in and the guy at the counter acknowledges each person even by name. Back to my gluten free pizza.... I did say "thank you, smells amazing " hoping they heard me as this was my first visit. Fortunately, I have self-control and didn't peek until I got home. The plan was to eat half, then reheat other half to determine......besides smelling and seeing the fresh ingredients...no need to add any seasoning! Please don't judge...but I finished it myself! It was quite tasty. What's not to love about a Mom and Pop pizzeria in Apex. Stopped in for lunch and had the 2 slice special. The cheese pizza was as close to perfection as I've had outside of Brooklyn. Crust thin and the undercarriage cooked just right. The sauce simple and delicious and the cheese was quality mozzarella. Pretty basic tasting pizza to be honest. Not bad but was not wowed like I was hoping. Not the thin floppy NY style crust I was hoping for. There was more cheese on one side than the other. Mezza Luna Pizzeria was highly recommended by my brother-in-law. After checking out their Yelp page, it was an easy decision. We called to order 2 pies for takeout on our drive back from the OBX. We ordered a large pepperoni pie and a grandma pie. We also added on 2 ordered of garlic knots. About an hour later we picked up our dinner. I loved the grandma pie! Yummy sauce, fresh basil, lots of melty mozzarella and delectable olive oil drizzle. The crust was crispy, not too thick with a nice chew. The pepperoni pie was very good as well. Pepperoni slices in every bite, not too greasy, classic NY crust. All around delicious pizza! The garlic knots were fantastic! Fresh garlic, so much flavor and perfect texture. Born and raised in New York, where a large pizza is typically 18 inches or more (often cut into generous slices you can fold), I know what a real NY style pie looks and feels like. Mezza Luna gets the taste closest to authentic in the Triangle area. The crust has that perfect chew, the sauce is spot-on, and toppings are always fresh and plentiful. For NC pizza, they're hands-down the best I've found. I've been ordering weekly for over 5 years, given them rave reviews across Google, Yelp, Nextdoor, and more, and I still recommend them to everyone in Cary (and beyond) craving real NY style pizza. That said, their "large" is listed as 16 inches, which feels more like a medium back home, smaller than what I'd expect for the price, especially when feeding a family or group. Add in the noticeably high prices, and the value takes a hit. Even more frustrating, after all these years of consistent business, the staff still doesn't recognize me or my name, and the vibe can come off a bit cocky instead of appreciative toward loyal regulars. The pizza quality keeps me coming back every week, but these other factors hold it back from 5 stars. This spot was tasty. I've been looking for a good pizzeria with different pies and this might be it. I got the large grandma pie, large tipsy chicken pizza (vodka pizza), and crab ravioli. The staff was friendly, the food was done in about 20 minutes, and prices were fair. My total was around $75 for all 3 items. The grandma pie was great. I crave that pizza often and not many places make it like this. We all enjoyed it. The tipsy chicken pizza was great to me, but others agreed there could've been more vodka sauce because it felt a little dry and more flavor in the sauce. I think then it would've been a perfect pie because the crust was great and everything else was portioned perfectly. When we picked up our pizzas, the owner was super nice; I ordered a gluten free meat lovers pizza, and she replaced the meatballs with extra sausage to ensure the pizza would be 100% gluten free. If you are gluten free, this is definitely the Italian spot to visit. We ordered the Lucy's fresh tomato (with added spinach and chicken), and the meat pizza. Both gluten free. They were absolutely outstanding. The crust wasn't like a thin crispy crust, as more gluten free pizzas are; it actually had some chew and a lot of flavor. Mezza Luna is a solid pizza place in the strip mall off Williams Street. We've had ML a few times and (again) are impressed with their flavor, texture, and consistency. Like most New Yorkers, we don't load up our pizza with toppings. Pepp, cheese, and lotsa love is all we need. ML has all the main pizza bases covered....garlicky flavorful sauce, chewy/crunchy crust, and a nice grade mozz. As soon as you walk into ML, you can smell the love (literally). Counter service is always friendly and quick. At this price point, you can't go wrong in NC. We look forward to our next ML pie! read more

Mezza Luna has become our go-to for pizza! We ditched our old downtown Cary pizza joint after trying Mezza Luna and we haven't looked back. We even ordered take-out for the Super Bowl from Mezza Luna. The Grandma Pie is our favorite with its amazing crust, fresh sauce, and perfect amount of cheese. The other pies we've tried are also great, but we keep going back to the Grandma Pie. We pair with salads, meat balls, and calamari. We've loved everything we've ordered. Everything is fresh and pricing is also very fair. Clean and relaxed environment. We've been there when it's been really quiet and we've also been there when it's been super busy. Fantastic gluten-free pizza! I was delightfully surprised when I found out that the gluten-free crust here is actually cheaper than normal crust. The gluten-free crust also tastes very good, comparable to a normal crust. When I came in to pick up the pizza, the lady in the front actually warned me about the bread crumbs that are in the meatballs for the meat lover pizza. To ensure that the meat-lover pizza was actually gluten-free, she removed the meatballs and instead replaced it with extra sausage (hence the heaps of sausage on my pizza). I became aware of Mezza Luna when a poster on a FB foodie page was asking for Italian food recommendations. Anyway, they came up in the conversation as very good and since I'd not heard of it we decided to go there that evening. It's a somewhat small dining area that's bright and airy. The atmosphere is comfy and welcoming. It's run by a literal mom & pop and it smelled so good as soon as we walked through the door! Always a good sign. We were warmly greeted by Vic's wife Lucy with menus, which we began to look over. We each got pasta and were not disappointed! My spouse got the penna alla vodka, which she just loved. Creamy and delicious. I got the baked zitti alla Vic that's in a creamy tomato sauce with mushrooms and crumbled Italian sausage throughout and topped with melted mozz. Wonderful! Both were huge portions. We both brought home leftovers that easily stretched into two more meals for us. Our pasta came with side salads and bread that was very good too. We've been loyal takeout customers of Mezza Luna for over a year--always ordering the pizza--and it has been consistently fantastic. We love that it's a local, family-owned restaurant. Ordering online is super convenient, and our food is always ready right on time for pickup. We'd been wanting to dine in for a while and finally got the chance. Knowing how popular the restaurant gets on weekends, we arrived early (around 5:30 PM) and were happy to find two open tables. We were seated right away, and despite how busy it was, Luc waited on us soon after. She was incredible--working the entire dining room on her own. We were honestly amazed by her energy. Even the kitchen staff were pitching in to help her out -- bringing food to tables and helping check out pickup orders. They were all so friendly! That said, we did notice that the team member working the counter had more downtime than Luc and the kitchen staff. There may be future opportunity for the counter team member to assist with bussing tables, refilling drinks, or running food to support Luc, who was clearly doing it all. The wait for food was exactly what we expected, given the number of dine-in guests, takeout orders, and catering happening at once. We knew everything was being made fresh, and we appreciate that. The pizza, as always, was phenomenal. I also really enjoyed the Chicken Francese. We weren't fans of the pasta dishes with tomato sauce--it was a bit too sweet for our taste--but that's just personal preference. We'll definitely be back for more pizza. STUFFED VEAL PARM is amazing combination of Fried veal cutlets layered with eggplant and ham topped with tomato sauce and melted cheese served with a side of cappilini with tomato gravy sauce, side salad with Italian dressing on the side, Italian bread, and a delicious tiramisu for dessert. And based on what we've ordered this is not up to par with what a good Italian food should be. Let me start with the Chicken Alfredo; creamy yes, but not a hint of flavor or taste, no Parmesan cheese either, it's so bland. Our daughter who loves Chicken Alfredo couldn't agree more. The baked ziti; same thing, it's bland, can't even taste the tomato sauce and we had to add a ton of salt and pepper on both so we could eat it. The Seafood Fra Diavolo granted by its name it's spicy but man this is Szechuan level of spicy and it's paprika not tomato based. I'm not sure what spices they used but certainly not Italian, this one tastes so off. Too bad, I see so much people coming to this place when we were there. Service was fast but unfriendly and condescending. The old guy and old lady taking the orders were unpleasant. So much for customer service. Jersey Girl moved South 2 years ago and literally had yet to find palatable pizza. J & S came close, Randy's was ok. Other than that I didn't waste my money. Did the chains because at least I knew what I was well ahem wasn't getting. It was our anniversary dinner and as it goes with 5 kids, we ordered in. The pizza was delish, the sauce perfection and I'd eat the garlic knots every day. My teenagers tell me to try the Penne Vodka and Calamari, so I will. Traveling through the area on Oct. 16th on our way home to Ohio and found this gem! From start to finish, everything was delicious. The pizza crust was crispy and golden on the bottom and the toppings were plentiful and delicious. We also had bruschetta while the pizza pie was baking. It was also a perfect 10. The shop is clean, brightly lit and welcoming. Vic is usually in the kitchen working his magic while Lucy handles the front of the house. First off, the pizza. If you like Sicilian pies and margherita pizza, you'd love the Grandma pie. It's a square pan pizza with mozzarella, dollops of amazingly delicious crushed tomato sauce & topped with grated cheese, EVOO & basil. This pie is our family obsession! The Vic's loaded pie was also very good! It was loaded with pepperoni, sausage, meatball (real sausage & real meatball slices...not those pizza chain nuggets), mushrooms, onion & pepper. Each slice was loaded with toppings! We've also tried their pastas on another occasion. Highly recommend the Angry Mussels if you like fra diavolo. It was deliciously briny & garlicky with a nice kick. Serving was very generous with lots of mussels. Each pasta we had was perfectly made. My friends have been raving about Mezza Luna recently and claim it's the best pizza in the triangle so they were very excited for me to try it. They ordered take out and got the Margherita pizza and gnocchi bolognese. The pizza was very good! I also really loved the gnocchi. The texture was perfect and the sauce was delicious. I wouldn't say that it's the #1 best pizza in the triangle as it still doesn't beat my very favorite pizza place in Durham. But it's probably in the top 3 of my list now! I've spent a lot of time on Long Island, and I know what a good penne alla vodka tastes like. The secret is always in the sauce. Unfortunately, their vodka sauce doesn't taste anything like the real thing. No mozzarella cheese on top of the pasta either (I've never not had melted mozzarella cheese on top of penne alla vodka before I came here). Underwhelming and disappointing meal. They didn't bring any bread to the table for me but they did for others. I didn't try the tiramisu because $10 seemed like a bit much when Anna's in Apex (an Italian chain based in Long Island) has the same thing for $4.50. Granted, I don't know if the portions are larger here. However, I care more about quality than quantity. read more
