As positives we enjoyed our plates, especially the Crab and Prawn Cakes. I also liked my entree of the Thai Style Coastal Soup, spicy and full of delicious fresh seafood, with the nit that the slice of toasted sourdough afloat in the bowl served only as an annoyance (I'd much prefer fresh bread on the side). But unfortunately there were a set of concerns: The cocktails were poorly made, especially the "Spice is Nice", which simply...wasn't. Lacking of balance and flavor. The focaccia, I think it was curry cardamom flavored? Didn't work. Tables were very tightly spaced and the noise level in the small room was high. I couldn't help hearing our neighbors' conversations but somehow couldn't hear my wife from across the table, I hate echo chambers! The live music - I'll spare specifics for the sake of the entertainer. Let's just say we preferred the ambience while the performer was on break. The server almost seemed to be trying too hard - there's no need for forced banter or laughter. I chose Bistro based on its web site and menu and was looking forward to a wonderful fine dining experience. We left disappointed.

The clam chowder was grainy, as in sand I assume, and tasted fishy. This was not great. I had really great clam chowder this week at a few places and this was the worst one. I had the seafood linguine which tasted fishy. So it was not great and it was expensive, per the norm for the area. I understand the pricing matches the area but the food was not good. I normally give a place a couple tries before posting a review when I have a bad experience but we are from out of town and with a limited time schedule. The disappointment of a wasted expensive evening pushed me to post this so no one else spends the same money, wasting their time and resources. TLDR: No matter how nice you are it does not make up for low quality food with expensive pricing.

Yes you read that correctly FREE pool and if that's not enough to convince you then you've got other deeper issues that you need to work through. I spent two separate nights at the porchlight, first was date night...obviously, we went for drinks after a lovely meal at the salmonberry. The bartender was welcoming and skilled, my lovely date wanted a gin cocktail and the bartender made two separate gin cocktails of his own creation that were equally delicious. On the second occasion we decided to go in for food (and of course pool...obviously) and to our surprise the food was delicious. Now let me remind you this place is a dive bar so don't expect Michelin star dishes but if you want delicious sandwiches/pizza and a casual/comfortable time then you must stop in. I got the BLT and the Philly cheesesteak. I was pleasantly surprised by both, the BLT was full of bacon, lettuce and obviously tomatoes and the Philly cheesesteak would rival your favorite spots in Delaware county(real ones know). My date exclaimed that the tater tots were the best she's ever had and I'm starting to think I agree. All in all the porchlight is a beautiful slice of heaven in an equally beautiful place that is the Oregon coast, so if you're ever in the area you poke your head into the porchlight for a night you won't soon forget.

I ordered the poke and chips (the ONLY interesting thing on the spartan menu) and the guac and chips, because after waiting fifteen minutes for a beer, I wanted to limit my expectations and my time. I received two small take out boxes (the size of leftover boxes), with about three dozen crunchy chips, six ounces of poke, and a sad assortment of little containers of salsa and pico (the slaw -- one of only five ingredients -- was omitted) and a small container of guac. None of it was interesting. This may be a startup, and I wish them luck, but this was a terribly disappointing to-go experience. Bar service was slow, the atmosphere was non-existent, and food was slow, boring, and of limited value. The poor beleaguered bartender was trying to service everyone, because he was literally the only employee front of counter. If you're going to start something new, staff it so that people feel appreciated for their custom and you don't overwhelm your employees. If you're expecting the lighthouse, this is not the restaurant you're looking for.

It has limited hours however, so make sure you check before you head over. They opened at 4pm the day we decided to visit, and we headed over to be there when they opened. I'd also read about the train from Rockaway Beach and that many taking the train would dine at the Salmonberry so we wanted to beat the crowd. We sat on the outside deck so we could enjoy the great view. There was some off and on rain, but the umbrellas, and hints from the hostess, kept us completely dry. The food! Fantastic! We had both the cioppino and one of the pizzas. Both were excellent. It's clear that everything was very fresh. I wish we'd been able to dine there more than once. Service was excellent! So friendly, warm and welcoming.

Of course, every restaurant can have a bad night, but after reading them, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. Our experience was anything but disappointing. We started with the steamed oysters, and as someone who has played oyster roulette and lost one too many times, I was thrilled to see fresh steamed oysters on the menu. They were delicious, perfectly prepared, and honestly had already altered my mood before the rest of the meal even arrived. And then there was the view. Spectacular. I kept looking around thinking what a privilege it was to sit down to dinner somewhere so genuinely beautiful. We ordered a cup of clam chowder to split because we'd heard it heralded as some of the best, and it absolutely lived up to the praise. Buttery, flavorful, not too thick and not too thin. Just really, really good chowder. For dinner, I had the ribeye topped with crab meat, and my date had the wild salmon. Both came with the most incredible creamy mashed potatoes and a salad. Even the salad service impressed me: chilled plates AND chilled forks. Such a small, thoughtful detail, but it immediately told me how much care goes into the dining experience here. My steak was phenomenal. The fat was rendered beautifully, the steak itself was cooked perfectly, and the crab on top made it feel completely indulgent. The salmon was equally delicious. Not a bite survived. We absolutely did not need dessert. And then our waitress brought out a massive tray of house-made desserts. Cheesecakes. Tortes. Crème brûlées. An entire parade of poor decision-making staring us directly in the face. So naturally, we took two desserts to go. We knew we'd regret it if we didn't. I also have to mention the service. Our waitress was absolutely incredible and, along with just one other server, was holding down the entire dining room. Despite how busy they were, the service was warm, attentive, friendly, and never felt rushed. A fabulous meal, genuinely wonderful service, thoughtful little touches throughout, and a view that is very hard to beat. Whatever experience led to some of those harsher reviews, it certainly wasn't the experience we had tonight. This wasn't just dinner. It felt special. We will absolutely be back.
