OK, my beloved girlfriend wrote a rave review of this place not a month ago. Funny how the seasons change. Last night we were ordering take-out. I got a quart of soup ($3) from China House and my girlfriend wanted the lamb-curry from Mamoun's. It was $14 for the entree and I left $1 tip. Yes, I tip for take-out. We get home and my soup was fine. Exactly as I expected. The Lamb curry however was disgusting. Imagine ground lamb mashed into a thin lamburger, not seasoned and fried till well done on a bed of three-day old reconstituted, tomato sauce splashed rice with intermittent slivers of stale flat bread that crushed into dust when bitten in to. $15! And as for curry, it is my understanding that a dish with the word "curry" in it's title implies that there is some type of curry seasoning involved. In this case there was none. No detectable seasoning whatsoever. So I called the restaurant and first established that I did not want a refund, I merely wanted to inform them of the caliber of food that I had gotten. Whoever I spoke to immediately became indignant and told me "Well, I'm not going to listen to you because I don't believe it is an objective opinion." He then threatened to call the police and "get your phone tapped" if I ever called back. Today I am hunkered down in my apartment with a blanket over my head staring out the front window in dread. The merest flashing light or call of a distant siren reduces me to apoplexy. Thanks Mamoun's! read more

I would post a picture of our dinner but we pounced on it like starving wildebeest upon the first tender shoots of spring grasses after a long dry season. Dinner arrived soon after ordering, was admired, then consumed in a delighted frenzy. Kitty and I are falafel chicks and there is no falafel to touch Mamoun's. I ordered the platter--served with pita chips, pickled carrots and hummus. Kitty went straight for the pita sandwich, perfectly assembled with fresh tomatoes, tahini, and lettuce. It is such a pleaure to return to a favorite place, to be greeted by the warm and accommodating Mr.Chater, and to know that what you will be served is exactly as it should be. Kitty enjoyed the Turkish coffee she'd been craving for a week now. I had the perfect glass of brewed iced tea. We decided not to order the baklava because we both want to eat fewer sweets and one must draw the line somewhere. Then we had a good laugh, decided to draw the line elsewhere and ordered it anyway! It's Mamoun's baklava! How could we turn that down? Flaky, not dried out like diner baklava, and dripping with syrup and walnuts. Bliss. We won't let Central Ave. parking deter us again. Though the lot next door is now reserved for Albany County Employees (What?? Are they more deserving of falafel-convenient parking than I??), we had no trouble finding parking on the street at mid afternoon on a Sunday. Go, my friends. Enjoy! read more

Third (and last) you get A LOT of food for the money. This falls into the highly recommend category for anyone that likes middle eastern food! Get a falafel if that's what your into. What a great find! My mom and I were in Albany for a day and wanted a vegan-friendly place for lunch- Mamoun's came up in my Around Me search and falafel was just what we were craving. It didn't disappoint! The food was all super yummy and we loved the decor- like being transported to the set of "Casablanca". Baklava and Halva are displayed in pedestaled glass desert stands on a gorgeous, dark wood bar. A pressed tin ceiling compliments the Victorian wallpaper and dark wood door arches. It was really a treat to be able to enjoy lunch in such an elegant setting. As for the menu the house cardamom tea is a must and the eggplant falafel was super yummy! We got catering from Mamoun's for a Christmas event at work last year, and everything was good. When I picked up the food a few minutes before noon, the place was deserted -- which was kind of funny because when I placed the order, they didn't want to deliver because it would be right in the midst of the "lunch rush". Oh well. The food was good enough that I brought the husband there for dinner soon after, and it was again deserted. Apologies that I can't remember what we ordered, but I remember it being good, though not mind-blowing. Service was efficient and friendly. Only thing irksome was that we had looked at the menu online (including prices) before going, and it was apparently out of date, as everything turned out to cost significantly more than the website had listed. Fresh falafel. Great service, though can be slow sometimes because there is only one person serving. For some reason, it had been literally years since I last went into Mamoun's. Well, that changed Wednesday. My little brother's home from college and I was getting out from work early that day, so we wanted to find somewhere to have a small mid-afternoon meal. Mamoun's fit the bill perfectly. I had the falafel and grape leaves apps, while my brother got the baba ghanouj-and-falafel plate that came with pita. I also had a Turkish coffee, which might be even better than espresso. It's delicious! Service was a little slow but friendly, and the interior is really quite lovely. I think this would be a great place for a large group to go out and share a bunch of dishes. Although admittedly, I'm not sure if they have a liquor license or not... is that why this place is always so empty? Either way, I'll be back soon to try entrees...and for more Turkish coffee. read more

I first had dinner at Mamoun's twenty years ago. Fast forward to today and I have never, ever - had a bad experience there. The food is always great, and the unusual ambience of the restaurant makes you forget you're in Albany. It's a family run restaurant so be prepared to wait a bit - but it's always worth it. Good Turkish coffee and a beautiful bar at which to enjoy it. The main room is cavernous, like some sort of place you might have seen in Istanbul. For such a modest menu, the location is fantastic. The entrees are over-priced. I've had food this good from food carts in several cities, and at half the price. The food was good, but just over-priced. I like the falafel and the grape leaves, and they have a really nice baklava. The hummus was ok -- not quite garlic-y enough for my taste. The eggplant was delicious. I finally ate at Mamoun's on Sunday. This is kind of hilarious because husband's family used to own a business next door before it became Capital Kidzwear, so my father in law used to live in one of the apartments above. At the time we weren't living in Albany (Boston) and when we would visit, Shades of Green was still open... so... I am ashamed to admit I never went into Mamoun's!! I enjoyed my dinner there and like other Yelper's found it empty and quiet. I reiterate that it is a very nice space with elegant surroundings. We had a table of six, the food arrived quickly, and the service was nice and polite. I ordered eggplant and falafel. The eggplant was beautiful. Truly the eggplant was the best thing about the meal - I don't think I've had better elsewhere. The falafel* was good, but not great. The hommus** was just ok. I also had a salad which was quite good - they pickle their own carrots for an unusual and tasty bonus. For drinks we ordered tamarind juice (good) and Turkish coffee (very good). At over $3 for a tiny cup of coffee, it better be awesome!! A slice of baklava*** rounded it out, but it was just standard baklava. I think Mamoun's is just a little too hyped. The food IS solidly good - just not outstanding. We went as a group of 4 vegetarians. Great falafel sandwiches(one of the best in the area, the falafel is soft and with the right amount of salad), the falafel-eggplant sandwich is even better, the mjadra is great, so is the baba ganoush and the grape leaves and the mint lemonade. I tried hummus and the falafel and kafta platter. The lamb wasn't very flavorful. The falafel was good but nothing out of the ordinary. I was surprised with the platter that I didn't really get any salad or vegetables. Just some crispy pita chips for the hummus, while my friend got warm pitas. Pretty sure the menu said I would get those too. Beyond the food, the service was painfully slow. I tried to flag my waiter over for about 10 minutes and he just stared at me. It always boggles my mind that Mamoun's is never filled with people. There is only one server (I think he's the owner) and he's a very nice man, who treats you like a guest in his living room. The interior is beautiful, simple and cozy, and the food is excellent. I always walk out feeling like I've just fed my soul. The grilled eggplant is amazing and with the yogurt tahini sauce, it's insanely divine. I wish they delivered, because I'm drooling about it right now. Their falafels are pretty good too. This place would make a fortune on Lark Street although they are just around the corner on Washington/Central Ave. Definitely a must if you like Lebanese/ Syrian food. Sultani is above average but nothing exceptional, Urfa kabab has more eggplant than beef and is sour . But a dish worth mention is Mjadra ! It was a good and revised version of khichhri with decent pieces of meat, but the quantity was not enough for a hungry person ! they serve food pretty late but the quality is too good . I finally came here after four years of undergrad at SUNY Albany and then post year and a half of graduation ... and boy, was I missing out all of this time! My best friend from college and I came here for an early dinner on Friday, and unlike some of the other restaurants on the block, Mamoun's Falafel had a large sign that signified that it was open. Freshly made falafel and other Lebanese/Syrian food? Yes please! My friend and I were the only ones at the restaurant, which normally makes me feel kind of funky, but my friend was so gung-ho about eating here that I couldn't detract from his excitement. Why not, right? We ended up ordering the Baba Ghanouj appetizer and my friend had the curry plate while I had the falafel and eggplant sandwich platter. Everything was so delicious! I wish I could write more about it, but it was just so good that I just want to tell everyone to go there and try it! You'll understand what I mean when you go - it's just too good for words! Everything was freshly made and all the flavors just linger in your mouth. The portions were very filling and for the price, it was extremely cheap! I'm upset that I didn't go there sooner! Everyone is really nice; the owner is friendly, the food is slightly unconventional, but delicious. I mean the chicken in the couscous was flame grilled and absolutely delicious. But, not roasted as every other chicken I've had in other places. The vegetables were tender, tasty and firm. The baklava was laden with butter. Conventional? No. It was delicious. My wife and I stopped here while heading home from a ski weekend in Vermont. We had a grape leaves appetizer, chicken falafel pita and a kafta-falafel pita. The grape leaves were nothing exceptional but we loved both pitas. I especially liked the kafta-falafel pita and would recommend it highly. My wife happened to prefer the chicken since it had a more mild flavor profile compared to the kafta. I like big flavors like the kafta has to offer. The quality of the pita's lettuce and tomato were as good as you could ask for unless you grow your own. Beautiful crisp lettuce and fully ripe tomatoes just a made the pita experience terrific. We also had a baklava and a Turkish coffee which I have had many other times. Both were good and might repeat if appetites demand. A few tips for fellow yelpers. This culture does not consume alcohol and I would highly discourage you from BYOB here out of respect. I mention this to prevent you from feeling uncomfortable. If you chose to enjoy a Turkish coffee it has the grounds at the bottom of the cup so just drink it until you feel the liquid thicken a bit and leave a bit in the bottom. If you try to drink it all you are going to have a very funny smile! read more

This is one of the best restaurants in Albany. (Don't expect alcohol, however...only juice, soda, coffee, or tea!) It has an unassuming façade that you could drive by quite easily, but once inside, you can see what a beautiful, old building it is, with a low-lit, quiet atmosphere. The owner, who always waits on everyone himself, is extremely kind and pleasant. As for the food, it's amazing...I order from them frequently, and it's consistently excellent. The food was hot, fresh and tasty. It was delivered promptly. Because of Covid19 concerns, I requested that the delivery person leave the food on our stoop and call me to let me know it was there. The instructions were followed completely and the delivery person waited by her car to make sure I came out to get the food. We smiled and waived from a safe distance. Falafel!.. wow. That's all, you figure it out. The kabob was awesome also, with big chunks of fresh grilled tomato and onion on well seasoned rice. Curry lamb was another big winner(wish I was able to sneak more off her plate). Portions are good, house spice tea tasty, deserts awesome, overall food delicious.
