Please don't use this company. I have been moving in New York for almost a decade and two men have always been able to get the job done in under two hours. Not only did it take 2.5 hours (the new apt is 0.5 miles away, so travel time wasn't a factor), but they somehow couldn't fit all my stuff in the van (again, has never been a problem), and they yelled at my partner in the process. Maybe worst of all, I was quoted one rate via email and told a higher rate in person. I ended up paying it because it's not the movers' fault that the company messed up, and I just wanted the process to be over. Completely unacceptable. read more

Arrived early, took 2.5 hours less than expected $280 including tip. Nice job. Would be a 5 star if our dishes didn't get broken. This move went very smoothly. The first part required three guys, the second part two. They managed to get a very long, very heavy piece out of an apartment through an awkwardly placed apartment door, and then through another such door and to the back of another apartment, putting all parts back together again. I've used this company twice now and they've been exceptional both times. The first was a last second request for a weekend move that they responded to quickly and professionally. The movers were on-time, cordial and efficient. Moreover, they had no issues negotiating a 4th floor walk up and some large pieces of furniture. The most recent move involved stops at 4 different locations around the city. They showed up early, worked quickly and carefully and were extremely thoughtful in planning out a complicated load in and load out. I think a lot of people, myself included, have come to accept that movers are most likely going to show up late, break stuff, try to sell you packing materials you don't need, take more time than it seems like it should, charge you more than you wanted to pay and have bad attitudes on top of all that. The Man with a Van team that I've worked with is none of those things. They operate the way a organization that wants your future business should operate -- prompt and effective communication, experienced and professional movers, reasonable and transparent prices. read more

Needed last minute movers to move a couch from a friends apartment to my own (both stairs). Filled out the online form three days before and heard back within 40 minutes. Emailed back and forth with the very kind Carmelita, who helped me find a time that worked for all parties and gave me a quote for the move. Moving day arrives and I received the 30-45 min warning call right on time. The movers arrived promptly and had the couch down from the 5th floor in 10 minutes. Since posting my previous review, Paul contacted my boyfriend and I to try to resolve the issues with our move. Apparently the team that did our move usually sticks to small jobs--his regular teams were busy that night. Personally, I would have liked to know that before we booked our move with them. That way, we could have made our own decision about whether or not we were comfortable using less qualified guys, rather than leaving it up to the owner of the company to decide. There are so many good moving companies in NYC, there's really no reason to settle for a B team. That said, we do appreciate his efforts to make it up to us, which is why I am updating my original review. At the end of the day, however, I would have rather paid full price and had a smooth, efficient move with no damage to our items. I think the lesson here is to make sure you clarify which team he's sending for your move. As I said before, my boyfriend was impressed with them back in 2010, so we know the service we received is not necessarily reflective of the company. read more

Used them again (see last sentence of my initial review). Jay and Marcos were phenomenal. This was a large move and they were by themselves, but moved very quickly. They were also incredibly courteous and friendly, which I appreciated. They even let me ride with them between apartments! The ride was pretty interesting in and of itself as we reminisced nostalgically on all of the women that came and went out of our lives. My enormous move was complete in just 2.5 hours. Talk about ridiculous efficiency. The damage to my pocket was minimal (by NYC standards) and worth every penny. I'll be sure to use them on my next move and suggest that you do the same. read more

These guys were awesome. I called the day before I wanted to move (in the middle of the busiest moving season), and they were able to schedule something for that worked perfectly for my schedule. They were on time, and incredibly professional. I asked them to move only my furniture, as I had borrowed a car from a friend and tas moving other stuff as they were moving my big stuff, and they started helping me carry the other things down the stairs as well, asking me if there was anything else that I needed help with. They wrapped up everything, and took extremely good care of my things even though it was all crappy ikea furniture. They were nice, and fun to be around, and made an otherwise dreadful thing (i.e. moving in general) enjoyable for the time they were there. We hired Man With A Van a month prior to our move on 8/1. One week before our move our booking was cancelled. We found this out by way of another moving company calling us and telling us Man With A Van didn't have enough movers and they'd been given our information to reach out. It is prime moving season in NYC and with a week left to find a new moving company we will now be lucky to find anyone at all with availability and due to the scarcity of availability, quotes we have received are 1.5-2x the price we expected to pay. I am 7 months pregnant, so my husband and I moving our belongings ourselves is not an option. Hire these guys at your own risk. They may or may not have a crew for you when your moving day comes. read more

BEWARE! Normally I do not like to go onto Yelp to write reviews, especially negative one, but this time I feel compelled. To begin with, "Man With a Van" is NOT a moving company. They take orders and then contract out to various moving companies across the city - you may get a good company, or a lousy one, there is no way of knowing. I planned my move ahead and told the company exactly what I was moving, I named each item and gave an approximate weight as I had several heavy items, one weighing 250 pounds. When the 3 movers arrived the next day, they told me that they had not been told what needed to be moved, and had no moving equipment whatsoever other than a few blankets. They were not prepared to move heavy items, and damaged them badly, and they even broke a not-so-heavy-item, by inexplicably tearing the shelves off a bookcase that had been sealed in place. As I said, I don't like to post grievances on Yelp so I tried to contacted the Man With A Van and told them everything, and they refused to take any responsibility for my damaged property. I guess you get what you pay for...please beware of this company. If you need to move, contact a reputable moving company directly. read more

This is based on the average of the moves. The first time I used them, they were great. They were on time, efficient and completed the move faster than I had expected. I would've given them 5 stars. So I decided to use them again when I had to move a month later. BIG MISTAKE! They were over 2.5 hours late which caused us to completely miss the elevator reservation time at our new building resulting in fines from the building. They were consistently lying to us about why they were late. First it was because there was an accident blocking the roads where the truck was located, then it was accident on the bridge coming into Manhattan and then they just stopped answering the phone altogether. We later found it it was none of these reasons. I've moved a lot over the past few years and I've made sure everything was all packed and boxed. All the movers have to do was load the truck and wrap up furniture which we had already dismantled. I also had them pick up items from a storage unit that was only 10 blocks away from the new place. The move was just across town from the UES to UWS so should've been easy and quick. This took over 8 hours and this was with my bf helping out by moving items from the truck to the building. The team was so slow and uncoordinated. I've never had a worse moving experience. read more

These guys are as good as it gets. I recently moved to NYC from Hawaii and I moved into a bare naked apartment in Hell's Kitchen. After finding some really good deals on semi-new furniture on Craigslist, I contacted Gentlemen with a Van; they were able to help me the very next day and assigned three guys to travel with me all over Manhattan to pick up the furniture. One of the furniture sellers couldn't meet us until later in the evening, so the guys offered to wait with me in the UES and even hooked me up with some awesome puerto rican cuisine. Overall, this company picked up and delivered an entire apartment's worth of furniture in one afternoon in the freezing cold with no complaints or foot dragging. They're hard working and affordable. I will definitely use Gentleman with a Van again when moving apartments or moving things into storage. read more

I booked a few days before moving with ease. Got a window of 8am-12pm, they called at around 7:40am to let me know that they were on their way. Packed up everything carefully and when we arrived to my new apartment they put everything where I asked. Disassembled my bed and put it back together in my new place. Not only do they problem solve with alacrity, but the hardest of tasks to them, seems nearly effortless. Watching them work is like a ballet. I was moving a small amount of household goods two stops from one side of Manhattan to another. An "easier said than done" job on most days. But what if the UN is in Session and it's rush hour? All the streets are diverted and you will never see dinner at the rate you and everybody are going. All bets are off! But not if you're in the VAN with Jose "Junior" and Marvin "Red". No Sirreee. I can't say enough about these Oscar's Team - "Red" and "Junior". Skill, resourcefulness, speed, and most of all the love of the work they do. Last minute need for 2 men with a van? No problem! I can't say enough good things about this company. I needed to move a King Size mattress from UES to Forest Hills, Queens. My friend quickly looked on Yelp for the best reviews and found MWaV. Using my phone, I went to the website and filled out the form at 6:25pm on a Sunday night, and hit "submit." (I was skeptical if I would actually receive a reply...) However, at 7am the next morning I received an email reply which simply and clearly provided all possible rates and any additional charges which could be incurred. I had a few questions and emailed back and forth with Renee a couple times - she replied within 30 minutes of each of my emails. At 6pm on Monday I confirmed by email that I wanted to hire MWaV for the next morning! No Problem! I was given a 2 hour arrival window for the next morning. Day of the move - received a call 30 min before exact arrival. 2 men came and took the mattress, put on a full coverage, zip around plastic cover and were out in 20 minutes. Arrived in Forest Hills within the hour, removed the mattress cover, set up the mattress and were gone. Like Batman. Cost was much less than expected and much less than other competitors' quotes. Needed to move what I thought was a ton of stuff from Greenpoint to Bay Ridge and was worried that it wouldn't fit into a Sprinter. I emailed a rough estimate of my items to get a quote and got a response from Paul super quick. I booked a 9 am move for a week later and was greeted by Matt & Chris at 9am promptly that morning. I didn't have a bed, box spring or couch, just a bunch of boxes, bins, bags and a few misc. items. There were cats in the apartment so before either of them entered, made sure no one was allergic. Matt & Chris took a quick survey of the stuff and then started to load out. I was a little OCD on the packing so I tried to make sure everything was boxed/bagged the night before so there would be little to no last minute scrambling. Once everything was packed up, they gave me a lift to Bay Ridge. Since the new place had an elevator, move in was a bit faster. They took their time, watched they walls to make sure stuff didn't get damamged and gave me a stress free move. All told, took a couple of hours and was able to get a ton of other stuff done that day too! Since this is the first time using movers, I have learned a few pointers: 1. Number all your boxes and make a rough list of what you are moving so you can tick off the items once unloaded. 2. ask about pet allergies. hate to have a mover's eyes swell up and sneezing while trying to move your grandmothers china... 3. play some music, even if it is just in the background. makes for a more relaxing move. 4. have a couple of bottles of water on hand - all that heaving lifting might make someone thirsty. 5. tip! "I would rather carry my boxes on my back for 8 miles." My experience with Man with Van was terrible. After being two hours late in the morning - the guy was complaining about carrying multiple boxes, which he was hired to do (claiming it was a two man job). Me and my colleagues here proceeded to carry the boxes to van ourselves while he complained. In the afternoon, the driver showed up three hours late and upon arrival proceeded to berate me. He had a completely horrible attitude and unprofessional behavior. I would be better off hiring a ten year old to move my belongings. Absolute horrible experience. This moving company was very reliable. I always find that I am nervous when booking a company because I'm not sure if they are actually going to come. This company emailed me immediately and called me the mornin before to let me know the status of the driver. The movers were professional but were unfortunately underprepared for the move. It's not necessarily their fault because philadelphia rowhomes are difficult, but it looks like a third person would have been helpful. basically it took a lot longer than expected and ended up being a rather expensive move for a down the block move. but otherwise was professional and hard working. read more

I'd give them a 3.75 star but 4 is close enough. Had a brutal experience on 7/3 but these guys did their best to get the job done. They give is a 2 hr ARRIVAL window but since I had an afternoon move and the guys were half an hour late ourside of their 2hr window, the delay caused us to miss our arrival window at the new building. Paul did his best and even sent two teams out to us a) in hopes to at least move half our items to the new building so that we could at least try to extend the window (the new building dictated as long as we get there by 5pm, they could try and let us wrap up the move) and b) to compensate for the first late team but unfortunately the coordination between the teams added to the move and we missed our move in window by 15 minutes :( Ultimately we had to place our items in Man with A Van's storage and the move costed us more than we anticipated since we had to get two teams. Paul did his best and gave us a discount but we were homeless nomads for two days without our items which was pretty uncomfortable (It was rather difficult finding a moderately priced hotel on July 4th). Wish the move went smoother and I've definitely learned my lesson. MOVE IN THE MORNINGS! Otherwise movers may get delayed with earlier jobs and you never know what will happen with NY traffic. I'm happy with how nice and professional Man With a Van was, would recommend them, but definitely wouild reserve the earliest shift possible going forward. read more

Would definitely use again. This company helped make my move very painless. The movers were professional (at least to me, see note below) and dealt with unforeseen circumstances (e.g., i did not know I had to disassemble the bed). The move was very quick - not more than 2 hours - and the price was also reasonable compared to a couple other places I checked, around 30-40% cheaper from what I remember. 4 stars due to the following hiccups: 1. On the day of the move, a very panicky / hostile doorman kept chasing us around to tell us to be careful about not damaging the hallway. The movers were somewhat aggressive back and made it a bit stressful 2. The reusable boxes I ordered had run out, and I had to use regular boxes instead. This review is for a single item move (a huge, unwieldy, mammoth sized couch) from the Financial District to Gramercy. I called Paul the day before my move after getting quotes from 4 or 5 other companies. Man with a Van was less than 1/2 the price of the other guys and just about at what I was willing to pay to move a piece of craigslist furniture. He confirmed my desired pick up window and it was as easy as that. The movers called the old sofa owners at the origin and called me when they were on their way to the destination. Under 45 minutes for the whole job. Clean, professional, friendly the moving guys were awesome and let me pay credit card for the move. Advice for yelpers is to make sure you have cash to tip those guys handsomely because they are as good as it gets. My only recommendation for Man with a Van is to get your name straight. Looking you up online comes up with all sorts of company names (Man with a Van, Gentleman with a Van, NYcityVan, etc) and multiple Yelp accounts. It's confusing for the customers and makes it a little more complicated to get your 5 star service. read more

I have to say, they work fast and reliably, they are nice hardworkers and the office gave me all the information I asked for and all the choices I was looking for. Great price, great service! I have been trying to connect with Paul, the owner, to generate some dialogue about significant damage caused by a terribly supervised move. I essentially had to supervise while the Lead sat in the truck and did nothing; I wrote a very long letter/email describing all the breaks and issues to the owner - not worth going through here. Of greatest concern, I asked the guys to stop see-sawing my 2 year-old sofa through a narrow space but every time I turned my head they continued. They completely ruined my pristine sofa as a result, which ended in my having to replace it at a loss of thousands of dollars. I have over 70 emails to/from Man with A Van, with no response since April 2018. It is almost February 2019. I will have to take legal action, unfortunately, since neither Paul or Tori in his office are responding. This is not the way to treat customers. End to end, the experience was terrible, as I was verbally insulted by a supervisor who did not care to listen and I was shut down. All I would like is to be made whole. This is an unacceptable way to treat a customer and the talent is sub-optimal. I have moved 3 times since using Man With A Van and had no issues. I have tried to resolve this is good faith but have been passively aggressively ignored. Legal action is in the works. Do not move with this company. read more

Moving in NYC is literally the worst experience no matter what, but Man With a Van made everything go to smoothly and efficiently. Joey and Dante arrived right on time, and even called me ahead of time to let me know the exact moment they would be there. They quickly moved everything out of my apartment, even though it was very a annoying situation with the parking and elevator. Not only were my movers great, the days leading up to my move I emailed customer service once or twice a day with many questions, and I was always responded to in a matter of a couple of hours. We had a wonderful experience with Nick and Steven moving us across Manhattan in just a breezy two hours and into a fifth floor walkup, no less! They seemed to be careful with our stuff and packed it well into the van. I was so sure that it would take at least 3 hours, so this was quite the surprise. My daughter was moving from a studio apt. in Manhattan to a 1-bdrm apt. in Central NJ. We thought about renting a U-Haul and doing the work ourselves. But there were so many obstacles to renting a U-Haul in Manhattan that we finally decided to call a small private moving co. Man with a Van was exactly what we needed. They gave us a precise quote ahead of time and showed up on moving day on time. There fees are charged on an hourly basis plus a one-fee travel charge (which includes gas and tolls). It only took Alfred and Jesus three hours, door-to-door, to load the van, drive to central NJ and unload! Now I call that efficient service! I would definitely call them again and recommend that you do, too! read more
