Food was great. Always has been. We usually do takeout but decided to eat in. We arrived at 8:30 on a Monday night. We ordered 4 items and 2 diet sodas. At 9:10 our waiter was very nice came over with 4 take out containers and a bag. He apologized but said they were closing We didnt finish and had to fill the boxes, pay the bill etc. A woman started cleaning our table while we were still eating. Not very impressed. Person was polite when I picked it up but the food was nowheread good as the persons manners. Perhaps I'm spoiled by good Chinese food as there is so much Quality Chinese in New York But I have to say that the mango chicken looked nothing like the picture on their website. Ordered food through takeout as dinning room was closed. The chicken low-mien was good. Chicken wings were huge but were not thoroughly cooked (pink inside). Chicken fingers were took thick from the batter. I prefer thin chicken fingers where you get to the chicken faster. I also ordered a shrimp fried rice with beef and broccoli and they were so so. We have enjoyed Mandarin Gourmet many times over the years. Today we tried a new dish, Chicken with Garlic Sauce. When I placed the order, I said that there should be no mushrooms due to an allergy. When we opened the chicken with garlic sauce it did not look like we expected and tasted spicy. The menu did not indicate spice. When I called to voice my disappointment and to ask about the ingredients in the dish, the manager replied with "that is what it is" and "it is spicy." She was not able to give a complete ingredient list. When I explained that the menu did not indicate spice, she said it did. As you can see below, the online menu in fact does not indicate spice. Honestly, this is one of the better Chinese places I've been to in the entire Boston area (that I've been to), and certainly the best in our Brookline/JP area. I'm not sure why so many mediocre reviews, I would say it deserves at minimum a SOLID 4. That being said, I'm going to round up in most cases just because most of the items I have tried are definitely 5 star worthy and FRESH. Here's my reasoning: The chicken is not frozen or anything like most Chinese restaurants. This place actually takes freshly cooked chicken (you can tell when you bite into it). They even do their coatings from scratch with what I believe is a rice flour batter (gluten free) to make the crispy chicken/beef options and honestly they hit the spot. The fried rice is freshly made (you can tell because leftover/re-heated fried rice tends to clump) and it is SUPERB. The rice noodle dishes are also a fantastic option - the medley of noodles/veggies/protein is flavorful and not oversaturated nor soggy and they come in great sized portions. We really love this place. The owner is super friendly and also extra cognizant of catering to gluten free as my fiancee is celiac and, since they make everything fresh, she's always able to accommodate things to make them gluten free for us to enjoy. We try to go to this restaurant once in a while, but recently with restaurants being closed down, it's been our go-to takeout place and it's such a treat every week. read more

I am reeling from the conversation I had with the manager just now. We ordered and picked up food from here tonight, expecting the same quality food we normally get here. Unfortunately, the sesame chicken had gone rancid. I've never tasted anything like it. I figured maybe it was just a bad bite, so I tried a few other pieces of chicken--all rancid. Times are tough. I get it. I called the restaurant and kindly asked to be reimbursed for the dish that was inedible. The girl told me the manager would call back, which she just did. Not only did the manager NOT apologize; she told me that it was my fault for not bringing the rancid dish back to Brookline (I live 20 minutes away). She refused to refund me. Mandarin gourmet has always been a family favorite but not somewhere we visited since Covid pandemic. There was also a change to establishments ownership during that time limiting our interest. But recently when looking for a nearby restaurant to seat a family gathering of 22 people Mandarin Gourmet not only worked with us to create an appropriate menu (thank you Kevin) but seated, waited on us (thank you Sang) and serviced us with incredible customer service as well as a very delicious dinner. We loved everything about this place! We have really been missing Chef Chow's in Coolidge Corner since it closed. We have tried and failed to find another Chinese restaurant nearby that we like as much and I think this time we might have succeeded. The first thing we noticed was how friendly everyone on staff is. This was especially nice since we have been to a few places where the wait staff seemed annoyed by our presence and did not smile even once during the whole encounter. The next impressive thing was the beauty of the interior. Everything was very classic and elegant (and clean!) The food was also excellent and did not break the bank. We had hot and sour soup, egg rolls, and orange chicken and loved it all. It's a tiny bit odd that the restaurant holds the end spot in a strip mall but you forget that once you're inside. We order takeout from here often because it is close by and it is fast. Like, we will call in the order and it will be ready when we get there 10 minutes later. Overall, the food is reasonably solid. We're not a big fan of scallions or onions, so we asked if there was any in the lobster sauce, and the waitress confirmed, no scallions. Really feeling the change in ownership right now. We order from here at least three to five times a month and are not going to continue with what was once a great restaurant any more. Specifics: There has been a decline in the quality of the beef teriyaki - flavor is lacking and there is now an after-taste that is off putting. The chicken wings now have some sort of breading which does not work either. This was one of the best places for wings in the entire city prior to the change in ownership. The bone-in spare ribs have become dry and also lack flavor. It pains me to write this, because we have been eating here for many years. We have an alternative located just beyond Legacy Place that is an Asian fusion style restaurant, but it was a distant second to the former Mandarin Gourmet. Local, nothing special Chinese joint with mediocre food, and service to match. There are way better Chinese food restaurants in the area in the same price range. Avoid if possible. We ordered a number of dishes including beef, fish & other seafood, veggies and everything arrived quickly. However, the beef was undercooked and raw in the middle. The scallops with veggies dish had a weird slimy clear sauce/stuff on it that didn't have a distinct taste, but an off-putting texture. When it came time to pay the bill, it arrived with tip included which was expected since they mention on the menu that parties of 7+ have automatic 18% gratuity. We had a party of 8. When we all calculated how to split the bill and comminuted to our waitress, she applied everyone's amounts to the pre-tip total for some inexplicable reason, not to the total we expected to pay based on received bill. The bill we received had an all-in total. Long story short, when I signed my check with no additional tip included (thinking my share already included the total), several waiters came to me asking where was my tip. This created a confusing situation because they charged everyone based on a total different from the check they gave us. I ended up addting another tip just to get them off my back. Our waitress didn't seem understand what was happening. Overall, it's one of those places that makes you question why people keep coming back. Perhaps because of the parking. Needless to say, this was a slightly frustrating experience and not worth putting up with given so many great options in the area. read more

This restaurant is definitely a favorite of mines! I've even told many of my friends and family to try/ have come here with them as well! It's always delicious, always fresh, not overly greasy. Decent quality food and definitely a lot to eat. Typical menu with many options to pick from which you would expect to find at many Chinese restaurants.
