I absolutely love this place. We started coming here after a Wednesday appointment we have and drive right by. It didn't take long before we stopped by every time we came by. Some of the stuff is kinda pricey and some of the portions are huge. We are trying all the chefs specials. The veggies are fresh and the chicken is tender. I think it's more American Chinese. Mandarin Gourmet has been around for maybe 50 years, previously as Ho Sai Gai. Located in a strip mall near the Puttterham Circle on West Roxbury Parkway, there is a lot of parking. The ambiance is pleasant. Slightly upscale. There were 16 in our party to celebrate a milestone birthday. The service was excellent: attentive and prompt. The food is very Americanized. Not really Mandarin and not really gourmet. As it was lunch, we decided not to order family style and rather order individually off their luncheon special menu. Only about $8.00 per person. My go-to Chinese restaurant. This gem has been consistent for years. The food is above average Chinese food. Dishes like sesame chicken or orange beef aren't as thickly battered and fried like other places. The food feels clean. There's not a bad dish on the menu. My favorite dishes include the sub gum rice soup (super light and delicious broth with chicken, beef and shrimp with vegetables), summer rolls, shrimp dumplings and pork shumai. I just came here to eat with a friend. We ordered two entrees, an appetizer and rice. The bill came and it was $65. I wondered why it was so high. My buddy told me to look at the bill. There was a 15% service fee added. I called the waiter over. I said why is there a 15% service fee added? He said oh choose a percentage you'd like to tip. So I said you want me to tip on top of the service charge?...what's the service charge for? I said I'm going to pay and tip you cash, why would you add the tip(service charge) to the bill already. He finally understood what I meant and went to change the bill. I was aggravated because I usually don't check the bills often, but this time I did because the price seemed inflated. I lost my trust for this place and felt deceived. I ended up leaving the waiter an adequate tip although he never apologized to me for the error, or told me why that charge was there originally. I have been coming to this restaurant for over 20 years. Hosted several family groups etc and recommended many other friends. The food and the waiters where all great. Once the owner Benny a friend sold the place everything went down hill from there. The front staff is only nice to certain groups of people I noticed . They treat certain people with respectful customer service but with others it's not the same. It's sad to see. But the real problem is a certain staffer who really showed her true colors one day. Not going to elaborate but I was disgusted when I left. The food isn't the same either . It's just sad to see such a once great establishment go to such a low level of service and the customer experience isn't the same. I was quite stunned by all the four stars. I think this restaurant fits a certain palate and idea of Chinese food that is lightyears away from the real deal. In fact, this is Chinese toned to perfectly fit the requirements of people who don't really want Chinese food. Use of spices is scarce, everything was vaguely acceptable but uniformly bland. Anything that involves dough e.g. pancakes, "dim-sum" (hum) was inexcusable -- any thicker it would be called chewy pizza. The Peking duck was an odd shade of pink and tasted absolutely bland. Like bland industrial chicken with a very chewy texture. Or maybe it was pork :-) If you want taste free with really thick dough then you are in for a treat. This was such a let down for me. Recently moved into the area and everyone raved about this spot for Chinese and take-out. I ordered the Sesame chicken entrée, fried tofu entrée, scallion pancake, and (shockingly) rice... Since your $13.25 order, of what I found to be food-court style Chinese, nickel's and dimes patrons for rice... And no, it's not life changing food, or big portions, or done in any sort of manner that would set it apart from any other Chinese take out place in town. Thoughts - Combination dishes are available for Lunch, at $7-$8 a pop with everything you could want - Fried/white rice, soup, and an appetizer!! - the whole spread. Then they jack up prices for dinner service with no other redeeming qualities other then "Oh! it's after 3:30pm! time to double the price and offer less food!" The Food - My chicken which consist of roughly 10 pieces of breaded, fried and red sesame sauce accompanied by 4 pieces of steamed broccoli for color, was soggy - Even after picking up the food 10 minutes after ordering. I also live about 2 blocks from the place so it's not like it was stewing for hours in it's own sauce until I was ready to eat. To add - 5 of my 10 pieces had either huge chunks of inedible cartilage, and one of those pieces also had a piece of bone. Kudos for using fresh cut white meat chicken I suppose. But that was just icing on the cake for me. The fried tofu was not fried enough, mushy outer texture, and the brown sauce (which was actually made from scratch from what I could tell) was very light. could of used more sauce. This was almost $11 bucks for the entrée. Pro's - The guy at the fronts tie was superb, he was super friendly, the place was clean, the scallion pancake was bomb, but not for $6.25 Bottom line - not worth the price, and an unbelievable feeling of "meh" all around. I was really holding out for this place. It's super close to where I live and the menu looked pretty great! Sadly, it very much disappointed. I ordered the fried tofu with broccoli- maybe this is not a thing up north but whenever I've ordered chinese take out, you always get a side of rice for free with your dish. Nope, here it costs extra, per dish. The tofu was so lackluster it barely tasted of anything, even though it was doused in the spicy brown sauce. I had to salt everything in order for it to taste somewhat flavorful. The scallion pancake was okay but I've had better. Overall this place was not worth the money to me. My boyfriend and I paid $35+ for 2 take-out meals and a small appetizer. I'd rather make the trek to Chinatown instead. read more

I'm am honestly shocked at how this place has high reviews from other people. Perhaps it's because my experience here involves an N of 1. I ate here on Christmas Day and experienced the following: -Ordered scallion pancakes. Mostly dough, little scallion. -Ordered eggrolls. Not good. Full of cabbage and chewy pork, mostly. -Ordered roast pork fried rice. Bland, dry texture, with chewy pink-dyed pork. -Ordered honey mustard walnut chicken. Very little chicken - almost all batter or chicken skin. -One server was shocked we left so much on our plates, and asked why. We notified that server that we did not like any of our food. That person went and got another server, who just came and took our plates away. So, no one ever addressed us after we commented that we did not like any of the food. -All that nasty food was $40! Too expensive for such low quality taste. My advice: don't go here. Go to Chinatown in Boston for sure. read more

I can't believe noone has reviewed this place! It is my favorite restaurant... I eat here 2-3 time every week and I have never had a bad meal, actually I have never had an average meal. When you walk in the door, the owner, Justina is usually at the podium and her warm smile sets the tone for what is going to be a great meal in every aspect. She knows her regulars by name! The service is A+ all the way. Friendly, polite and efficient. I usually order a pot of the sub gum rice soup, an appetizer and one entree to share with a friend. With no drinks, that will cost you under $30. The fortune cookies are served at the end of the meal with delicious leechee fruit. These folks are not just boiling up the generic stuff from Super 88, it is fresh and delicious! Friday and Saturday nights can be crowded and they only take reservations for large parties. They are open for lunch right through 10:00 pm or so. Also great for take out. read more

My wife and I had take out tonight, and there was a bit of sticker shock when I saw the bill, because I don't generally look at a menu when ordering Chinese food. However, we were very impressed by the food; Mandarin really sets itself apart from any of the other Chinese places we've eaten. Me: Chicken in garlic sauce - the sauce was light and, unlike many other places, didn't hide the flavor of the obviously fresh / still crisp veggies. Wife: Sesame chicken - No breading. Seriously, it looked like it was kissed with flour only for frying. She got well over a dozen generous, legitimate pieces of chicken. Apps: Crab rangoon and egg drop soup. Here again, it didn't feel heavy at all. The cream cheese in the rangoons didn't overtake everything. I could actually taste things inside of it! Also, the shell was thin and crispy. The soup also tasted very fresh, with big chunks of not-soggy mushrooms. The only annoyance is they don't include rice with the dish. I feel if I'm going to pay $13 for a dish they ought to just throw a pint in. But otherwise we had a very good eating experience. read more

We didn't intend to go to Mandarin Gourmet on a recent snowy evening but as we drove out towards West Rox / Rozzie in search of food and suddenly lost our motivation to brave the wintry roads, we spotted Mandarin Gourmet in the Putterham Circle "mall" and turned in and decided to give it a shot, walking in with all of the known caveats that this was going to be a safe suburban haven suffering from all of the common deficiencies that American-Chinese restaurants have. So in comparing Mandarin Gourmet to its peers in this category, I think of Chang Sho (Cambridge), Yen Ching (Cambridge), Chef Chang's/Chow's (Brookline), and most Chinese restaurants across the Midwest and in every suburb across America. It's not fair to compare it to more authentic leaning menus. All of this being said, MG is run like a legit restaurant that has succeeded in catering to the suburban dine-in and take-out crowd - this was easily apparent as a number of diners and take-out retrievers knew the owners by first name - the clearest sign of a successful Chinese restaurant that has managed to bridge the immigrant to local divide and the rare Chinese restaurant where the owners actually care about their service to their neighborhood community. This is evident in the design and cleanliness and the alacrity of the waitstaff. The unfortunate truth of more authentic Chinese restaurants is that they largely ignore some of these aspects; it's a trade-off: check out some of the better restaurants in Chinatown. The food was reasonably good if not a little toned down in flavors - next time I might ask for more spice in everything I order. The shrimp in "Orange shrimp" were sizable and fresh-tasting, and though they could have been much "crispier," the overall taste was satisfying. A half-order of Peking duck satisfyingly hit the spot though the reddish hue of the roasted duck skin was a little curious and the skins for wrapping were a little thick to my liking. Service and attention were excellent even on a pretty busy night. MG was certainly a surprise finding and in the category of American-Chinese fare has established itself in this corner of the suburbs with a pretty good formula. My hope is that they try to add a few more authentic items to the menu and stretch the palates of their devoted customers. read more

I love Mandarin Gourmet the food is freshly prepared and delicious however I will no longer dine at this establishment after witnessing first hand a woman literally choking on her food while staff stood around and did nothing but haphazardly clean up the expelled food. This woman's friend and myself assisted the lady and she was able to expel the food causing her to vomit three to four times as I literally was getting napkins from the service area for clean up while two employees looked on like they were dumbfounded. When it became obvious this woman was choking and needed assistance I yelled to the employees that she was choking. This place is so small that it was obviously notable as other patrons noticed what was taking place. To make matters worse employees cleaned up the aftermath with more napkins and a broom....disgusting. The two women were not moved to another table and I'm sure they were charged for their meal. BTW the owner/manager was sitting at a nearby table just picking string beans while this was going on and did not budge nor make any effort to see/ask if the woman was okay. Unacceptable behavior. I understand not everyone is trained in basic life saving skills (Heimlich Maneuver) but to stand around and do nothing takes it to another level of ignorance. Restaurant employers should be mandated to train employees to at least learn the basic Maneuver because these things could and clearly can happen. read more

Since we're on the subject of Americanized Chinese food, Mandarin Gourmet is the standard bearer. Gigantic portions for reasonable prices, with fast service for dining in or take-out. I adore their peking ravioli, fried chicken pieces, beef and broccoli, spicy chicken, wonton soup... I don't think I've ever ordered a dish I was unsatisfied by. I did grow up down the street so I'm a little biased, as there were plenty of late nights and lazy dinners where Mandarin Gourmet stepped in to save the day. read more

This place is great! Boyfriend's parents took us here last Saturday night. We ordered the egg rolls and Peking ravioli to start and shared the broccoli beef, general tso chicken, and Singapore noodles - all of which were delicious. I am partial to broccoli beef, so I have to say it was my favorite, but the Singapore noodles were amazing, too. I haven't had much Chinese since moving to Boston, so I am excited we found a place we really like that is reasonably priced. Booths are cozy and drinks are cheap, too. Less than $5 beers and some hilarious descriptions of cocktails on the menu. Some limit your intake to two, so they must be strong ... maybe. I'll have to go back to try. read more

First I would like to mention that this place is very clean and the atmosphere is very nice and relaxing. The food is not greasy as u would expect from majority Chinese restaurants. And all vegetables were fresh . I think that's why it makes their food delicious. We order shrimp and garlic sauce lunch plate that comes with chicken wing, rice and soup and fresh wontons. I really like that dish. Rice was perfectly cooked and as I mention before was not greasy at all. It was plenty of shrimp on my plate. The only down side it also had lots of onions. Sauce in this dish was amazing and I love wontons. Second dish was General Tsao's Chicken. That was yammi but it was way too much sauce. And it's suppose to be spicy but I didn't feel anything. It was actually pretty sweet and I'm the type of person who can't tolerate spicy food. But in overall I really enjoy both dishes. But I do think they can do better. Also want to mention that tea was amazing. It was perfect. And I'm picky at that. The bill that we got was only $19. Not bad right. Also I really would like to communicate better with waitress stuff. First I would like to say that my review is based on two visits to this restaurant. I usually rate a restaurant based on the following four main categories: 1. Food 2. Service 3. Cleanliness 4. Flexibility Sadly, I was so disappointed after my last visit that I decided to write this review. Here is a recap of my experience. Service: My husband and I arrived at around 3:30pm, which is when they stop serving lunch specials. We were greeted by a very hurried and rude waiter who didn't even ask what we wanted to drink. He said if we hurried he could put the order in for a lunch special. So we ended up ordering 2 vegetarian plates from their lunch menu. The food arrived only 3 minutes after we ordered, which always makes me suspicious because that is not enough time for a chef to cook a plate of food. This seemingly fast service suggests that the food was pre-made or packaged and heated in the microwave. Additionally, the order came in wrong, and to my husband's dismay he found a fried CHICKEN WING in his VEGETARIAN PLATE. I asked for brown rice but got white rice, and my husband got fried rice that had obviously been cooked with meat. Food: The food never impressed me from the beginning. In fact, there was a drastic change in quality between the first and last visits. The rice was overcooked and hard. I asked for spicy Tofu, but never did I imagine that the person who designs the menu would think of serving a plate full of very spicy tofu with no other side other than bland white rice to balance the flavors! This is a big no-no in any restaurant. The beauty and genius of any cousine is found in the perfect pairing of flavors that enhance one another without extinguishing any one of them. Unfortunately, all I could taste was super spicy watery tofu and nothing else. I couldn't finish my meal. Cleanliness: the place was clean both times I visited. Flexibility: at first it seemed that the restaurant policy was flexible since the waiter allowed us to order late from the lunch menu. Yet, if the price of flexibility is poor food quality and mixed up orders, then I take no flexibility at all. Lastly, I see something wrong with the Name of the restaurant in itself. I think it is a mistake to use the word "Gourmet", since the term implies refined taste and it is almost always used positively to describe the culinary arts of fine food, something this restaurant obviously lacks. read more
