Mandarin Island is an older Chinese restaurant in Mission Hills. The restaurant itself is well-maintained and fairly clean. Parking can be an issue, but we usually find a parking spot in the back. We dine there often when we visit the area. The servers are friendly, and our orders have always been served hot. There has never been any wait to be seated, and the wait for our food has always been minimal. Their menu offers a wide variety of choices, and with a few exceptions, none of the dishes we have ordered have been disappointing. The portions are more than substantial. On this visit, we ordered from the "A - Family Dinner" and selected shrimp with lobster sauce, peppered beef with mushrooms, and a side of Kung Pao spicy shrimp. The Kung Pao spicy shrimp was a disappointment because it was not spicy at all (delicious, but not spicy). It also comes with paper-wrapped chicken, rice, and soup of choice. My boyfriend and I were craving some good Chinese food nearby, and Mandarin Island was one of the options that came up. I'm a bit surprised at all the low ratings but, I'm happy I decided to give this small business a try. I placed an order online through their website, and placed an order for pick up. The pick up time was 45 mins, which was a bit high, but we were okay with that because we ordered early enough, and the food was worth the wait. Once we arrived, we found parking in the back, so I entered from there, mentioned my name, picked it up, and went home to enjoy it. The place itself looked a bit dated but was a cute little restaurant. I wouldn't mind eating inside the next time around. We ordered the cheese rangoon for our appetizer, I got the beef lomein for myself, and my boyfriend got the Kung Pao Chicken. It came with rice which was nice. The total was $45 with taxes, which was reasonable given the potion size and quality. It took us two days to finish it. All the food was flavorful, fresh, and delicious. I lived in North Hills for almost 8 years. I had to move out and come back like five years later to finally try this place. Im on a honey walnut craze at the moment. I called here before i arrive to make sure they do have some. They served hot water with some fried wonton chips as my appitizer while i wait for my food. While the walnut shrimp was nothing to brag about but not a total let down either. It was nice and my only complain is the parking. There's parking in the back if it's not too crowded. read more

Ordered to go for this place and I got the one entree combo with fried rice, chow mein and an egg roll for $20.99 - I chose the mandarin chicken and tbh the quantity was good, it was a lot of food. I really enjoyed the mandarin chicken but I wasn't big into the fried rice, chowmein nor egg roll. It was made fresh like everything was hot when it came in but the flavor just was not there for me. I ordered the chicken in creamy corn soup but the more I had it, the more my stomach wasn't agreeing to it. I ordered the creamcheese wonton and that one I really enjoyed with the sweet and sour sauce. I'm not sure if I ordered the right things but if there's anyone who has other recommendations for this place I am open. In this context, my homework led me, for the first time, to Mandarin Island, a Chinese restaurant in Mission Hills. After arriving here, I ordered for carry out, the Mongolian Beef Lunch Special to be made spicy (that did not happen). Just some hot sauce was added to my package. It came with an egg roll (good) and a salad (just lettuce, no dressing). The inside of the restaurant is simple, but nicely and neatly decorated. The lady taking the order was crabby, but the server was friendly and helpful. I chose fried rice instead of steamed white rice and it was appetizing. This is the first Mongolian Beef I have had with bamboo shoots (not my favorite). It was loaded with scallions, like it should be (my favorite). The beef, which should have been the star of the show, was chewy, that too and surprisingly on every bite. But the overall dish had flavor, even though it was mild, in addition to an unassuming but acceptable taste. Not a bad find after all. Parking is difficult. Two stars -- and that's being generous. The food was heavy, greasy, and seriously lacking flavor. With so many solid Chinese food options in the area, this place simply doesn't measure up. What really sealed the poor experience was the service from a woman who appeared to be the owner. When I politely asked to move tables to avoid nearby customers loudly using vulgar language, she came across as dismissive and rude (whether due to attitude or language barrier, the interaction was not handled well). I ultimately had to move myself just to enjoy my meal in peace. The only bright spot was our waiter, who was friendly and prompt. I've been eating here since I was in middle school. I recently moved just within their delivery area and I was so excited to eat Mandarin Island again. One of the few places that were open on Christmas! Their portions are very reasonable for the price. When you dine in you also get a choice of soup and some delicious hot tea as well. Wow!! Great first experience! And it was delivery. The order showed up in a really nice recycling bag that is made to keep things hot or cold! We had the War Wonton, paper wrapped chicken, crisy wonton filled with chicken and hot and sour soup! The portions are awesome, FYI: Large Soup is 2 Pints, they also add a extra large bag filled with crispy wonton chips, lots of dipping sauces. Ahh, Been eating from here a long long time. Was in the area yesterday, and we ordered food from Mandarin Island. They have a huge menu of foods for a Chinese restaurant. I ordered 2 Chicken fried rices with extra chicken inside both, and 1 plate of Calamari Squid. Its delicious with black pepper, and colorful onions. Service is good, I tipped my delivery drivery well. They take about 1 hour for delivery. That all depends how much you have being delivered. read more

He purposely ignored us again when we needed more time to look at the menu (not a real menu but a takeout paper menu) Took my plates when I wasn't finished with my food (they will take bowl/plate if it looks like crumbs or leftovers) they will NOT ask! NOT FRIENDLY STAFF I use my manners but the old waiter does not care if you say please or thank you you get the same kind of treatment. Another customer beside our table told the woman who worked there with glasses that the food came out cold THREE TIMES. Instead of apologizing she got defensive and said that she saw the cook in the back make it. Cool but how long ago did he make it Lady. The quality has really gone down over the years. This used to be a very good place. We were there the other day, and it was disheartening to see that they use spaghetti pasta for noodles, and you can tell. It was hard to chew. Real Asian noodles don't take effort to chew. As an Asian, it was very obvious. I guess they use it because it's cheap and non-Asians may not notice it. We did! It's obviously cut corners and quality of the fruit is not a priority for them. Oh man, I've ate here at least 5 times. It is good quality food for what you get. USUALLY my service is really good here but I think today the owner just wasn't happy. I believe she is the owner or manager. Not a super warm friendly welcome, sat me at a table that wasn't 100% clean. Took over 10 minutes to get me a water. Checked on me about 7 minutes in when it should really be within 2 minutes. It's called 2 bite check or 2 minute check. Other than the service being a little disappointing the food is good. For a while now I had been getting brochures in the mail for this spot & finally decided to make a trip to pick up some take out. The menu options are CRAZY so many to pick from I couldn't even remember what we ended up ordering but let me tell you it was so GOOD! Walking in it definitely gave mom & pop shop, since it's on a busy street I've actually driven by it but never noticed. The parking isn't the best but definitely worth the food. This is some authentic Chinese food with such delicious spices and flavors. If you're looking for some good quality, this is a good spot to look out for. I waited over 20 minutes to pick up a DoorDash order today and there was no apology after being told I had to wait for 5-10 minutes at first and then waited 10 more minutes. This has been the fourth time this week that I've had to deal with this consistently where I had to wait 20 minutes to just pick up an order or to get help. I also got a contract violation because of the late pick up. It makes me frustrated because imagine getting paid only 40 minutes for every hour you work through without a break and that's what it's like for me when there is time given before to finish the order. The place wasn't that busy in the first place with about a couple groups barely sitting down and about a few tables that were already eating. I'm tired of the inconsideration of other people's time from these restaurants and stores and not doing anything to remedy the situation as this a customer service job, meaning you try your best and do what you can when anyone enters any customer service place. Sometimes saying "Thank you for waiting! Take care" would've been enough instead of pointing to the order and continue talking on the phone with another customer.
