Ick. Now, I'm basing my review on only one lunch by myself, so figure that in as you read. This place certainly loves it's oil. Everything I had was laden with this heavy, greasy, fattening stuff. If you're a fan of cooking oil, this is your go-to spot for sure. I had the "gourmet" dinner. That means Mongolian beef, my usual in basic old-school Chinese places like this. I chose won ton soup over the seafood soup choice. The broth was fine, but the won tons were thick and doughy. Not great. The beef seemed of a decent quality, but was absolutely floating in oil. This made the green and white onions too soft and mushy and dripping with oil. Ditto the very messy foil wrapped chicken appetizer, but the egg roll was okay, if bland. There are plenty of excellent choices for all types of Chinese cuisine in the Valley. No need to come here. Mandarin King, is a Chinese restaurant in Northridge, that is one of those eateries. It has a huge menu, enveloping numerous dining categories, to satisfy any Asian taste. The choices are endless, the portions are large. While the interior dining room is not decadent, it is well appointed with Chinese decor, to make you feel invited and comfortable. Food portions are large and delicious. Mandarin King has a loyal clientele (dine in and carry out) that has been coming here for years. I am one of those customers. While I have tried several of their numerous dishes, none of them have disappointed. However, I have repeatedly ordered (to go) their fish with black bean sauce. Another of my favorites is their Mongolian Beef. Their rendition of this dish is attractive to me due to its abundance of onions (scallions, white) and the tender slices of beef with a mild but satisfying flavored sauce. So it was once again, the choice for this take out visit. It lived up to its reputation. On this occasion, the lunch special with fried rice and an egg roll. Both lovely too. You can't go wrong at Mandarin King. I've been going there at least 40 years and it's never changed because it's perfect. The lunch specials are an excellent deal. My favorites always been the kung pao chicken (extra spicy for me because it deepens the flavor). The hot& sour soup is the best. Mandarin King ruins it for other restaurants because you don't want to eat it anywhere else. The service is always fantastic. It's cute inside and I've always loved it. This place is okay. I tried their tangerine beef, string beans and fried pork chop. It wasn't bad but it wasn't great either.

My husband and I decided to try their egg drop soup and their hot and sour soup. We usually have a spot for Chinese soup but this was closer and we wanted to give it a try. It was pretty good, they had tofu in their egg drop soup which I'm not used to but I liked it because it's additional protein. We would come back here again to try other dishes. The only thing that was a bummer was that the crispy wontons weren't so crispy. Most of it was stale. They also gave some almond cookies which was nice but the thing I found quite odd was that it came in the same bag as the soy sauce, other sauces and fortune cookies. Those sauces and fortune cookies are individually wrapped and in its original packaging but the almond cookies were not. I'm not a fan of all of those things touching in the bag when the cookie is exposed. It would be great if they separated the cookies in another bag. read more

I've been coming here for years. Food has always been good and comforting. The food is exactly what I expect to eat and enjoy. I know all the waiters by name and really love the service and the "welcome back." Juan and David always give excellent service. Mandarin King has been around for 43 years. The decor and restaurant is a little weathered but decent. It's not a Michelin Star ambiance but a comforting casual dining experience. The owners are 3 siblings. Jerry, Jimmy and Jenny are great. Finally tried this place for Father's Day and what a hidden gem. Close to the busy corner of Devonshire and Balboa is this pretty nondescript Chinese food restaurant. Easy to miss with how busy Devonshire is. There is ample parking in the lot. The inside isn't much as it's really outdated but there is a big seating area and also a private room for events. One tv that was showing golf. That said, all you care about is the food good, is the service good, are the prices fair? Yes across the board. Service was great by Juan. Super fast and attentive and very nice, Food was delicious. Mongolian beef, pork chops, string beans, steamed fish filet, fried rice and white rice. Also got tea and soup. Prices were fair as noted. I finally stopped by last week as I was planning a Lunar NY gathering and wanted to order Chinese food. I was surprised to find many people dining inside. After looking at the menu and reading Yelp reviews, I decided to order from this restaurant. It did not disappoint. Ordering was easy (I called in a day in advance but you could order online). Delivery was on time. The driver was polite. The food was warm and nicely packaged. The items were generous in portion and tasty. Pricing was reasonable. I ordered the following items: Beef Chow mein Kung pow chicken Tangerine chicken Sautéed string beans with white garlic sauce Baby bok choy w mushrooms Bean curd with veggies (no meat) Chicken fried rice White rice, Brown rice The best items were the vegetarian dishes, the beef chow mein, and the chicken fried rice. I tried a few different dishes the sizzling rice soup kung pao chicken beef skewers Here's a breakdown of my thoughts: First, the sizzling rice soup (rated 5/10) was a bit of a letdown. While the presentation was decent, the flavor didn't quite deliver. I found it unusual that it had broccoli mixed in, which isn't typical for this dish. The imitation crab didn't add much either. The kung pao chicken (rated 6/10) was better, but still nothing to write home about. The chicken was tender, but the sauce was too mild, and there wasn't enough of the signature heat and flavor that makes kung pao chicken stand out. It seems the cook forgot to put certain ingredients in their Chicken Chow Mein to give it a good taste, that was a fail, I ordered Pork Fried Rice & was given Chicken instead, no taste, don't know what happened, I would normally have given them 4 stars, but this time around, it was very disappointing. I had a surreal experience with this restaurant last night. My wife called to place a take-out order, and when they asked for her phone number the man said it wasn't ready yet. She hadn't even begun to tell him what we wanted! She was able to get him to take the order, and he said to come in 35 minutes. I showed up at the right time and the older man at the desk said he had taken my order and would go look for it. I felt bad for him as he needed a walker and had to go all the way back into the kitchen. He asked an older woman something and she really started yelling at him. It was a bit uncomfortable watching it. When he came back he said it would be ready in 5-10 minutes. After 20 minutes a younger man came out to bring someone their order and I asked if he could tell me where mine was. I hadn't been pressing the older man as I really didn't want to make him trek back to the kitchen with the walker again. Well, the younger guy went off on me with quite a rant. Didn't I realize how busy they were? They had been working 15 hour days since Christmas. Everyone wanted their food but no one appreciated how hard they worked. More of that sort of stuff. I said I had asked as it was well past the time promised, and that ignited him more. Promised times mean nothing, and why couldn't I understand that? They had no control over how long people sat at a table (no clue why that impacts a take-out order). They had been there 45 years and no one appreciated them. With that he went to the kitchen. He came back about 5 minutes later with the food, but the rant continued. He went off about how AI was supposed to make life better but let's see AI try to do his job. I have zero clue what brought this particular tirade on. I agreed that AI was bad and that it couldn't replace everyone, and he calmed down. The older man and woman were quite nice in wishing me a Happy New Year, and with that I left. The food was okay, and the portions good, but I doubt I will return to a place with such poor customer service. Kept refilling our wonton chips as we waited for the food to come out hot and fresh. How did it take me so long to try this little gem? It's old school, charming, untouched, and they have a simple menu that has something for everyone. We had the combination chow fun, although next time we will for sure get a beef chow fun as the beef was our favorite protein in the combination chow fun. I highly recommend their kung pao chicken, if you want it spicy just make sure to ask them to make it spicy. It was really lovely. Our spinach was nice, a huge portion and cooked nicely. My brother first tried this place with his co-workers and told me about it. The dish to get here is called the "Steamed Fish." It's $17.95, but it's actually 2 fish fillets in a ginger/soy/garlic marinate. It's the best fish dish I've ever had at a Chinese restaurant. Best of all, I'm guessing it was the owner who took my order while I came here for to go, and he offered me free rice if I had paid cash. Unfortunately, I didn't have any cash on me, but the next time I come here, I will remember to bring cash. The Hot & Sour soup is good, but not as good as Green Apple Bistro in Studio City. Open on Christmas but shouldn't have been. Almost 1.5 hours after our party of 3 was seated the waiter brought out vegetable noodles. After another 10-15 minutes, fried rice. Main dishes had not been started and waiter said they ran out of beef, chicken, and shrimp. No apologies or estimate of when we might expect to eat. We had been patient since it was a holiday until that point. Even our tofu dish hadn't been started. The food we did get was greasy and flavorless. They were busy with takeout orders and both staff and customers were yelling. It was stressful and we regretted going. The experience ruined an otherwise nice holiday. We paid for the 2 dishes we received and went home to cook dinner. They should rethink being open on holidays if they cannot handle the orders. We really should have been comped since they couldn't provide our meal. We will never go back. read more

Hadn't been to this place in years but since I was in the neighborhood , decided to grab dinner to go for my mom's bday . Ordered the mandarin fried rice, beef chow mein, walnut shrimp, cashew chicken , Kung pao chicken, beef brocoli, and tangerine chicken . I knew when I opened the container of fried rice , it wasn't gonna be great. The fried rice was mushy bits of rice with color. Tasted how it looked. Flavorless. The chow mein was ok, nothing to rave about, kinda meh. Onto the beef brocoli. Flavor was decent but beef wasn't tender. The walnut shrimp was good, as was the tangerine chicken, but I couldn't really distinguish between the cashew chicken and Kung pao chicken . Looked the same and tasted almost similar except for the cashews and peanuts . I will say the service was good but they need to work on their interior . Just looks really dated . Anyways if I'm in the neighborhood I'll hit up the fast food Chinese place down the street. At least I know what I'm getting there. . read more
