Best dim sum in the Twin Cities! Can't compare to Chicago/Cali but my fav in MN. I've been coming here for years but recently had the best experience so it's time I finally wrote a review. THE FOOD: - Must-Gets: You can't go wrong with any of the steamed dumplings, shrimp siu mai, and the rice noodle rolls that are soaked in soy sauce. I also really liked the fried sticky rice dumpling, shrimp stuffed eggplant & pepper, & fried tofu skin. You have to tell one of the servers separately if you want the Chinese broccoli which I usually get to balance out the fried things. - Always end your meal with an egg custard tart and a fresh pineapple bun and you'll thank me later for it. - Avoid: The only thing I didn't enjoy was the tarro dumpling. Those were dry & meh. OVERALL TIPS: - Go with at least 5 others who are enthusiastic about dim sum. A group of 6 will most likely ensure you get a table w/ the lazy susan but more importantly, this will ensure you get to try a bunch of dishes. My last trip, our table got 20+ different dishes. Of course this means having great self-control and taking just 1 piece of everything so you can try it all! - If ur not going to arrive when the restaurant opens (9:30am) on the weekends, arrive at least an hr later so folks are starting to leave. The parking lot gets completely full but just keep circling. Or if u have fabulous friends like I do, have them save a spot. - If you want more tea, just keep the lid open which signals the servers to refill it. - At the end of your meal, if you still have a few things left, don't waste it. You can ask a server for a to-go box. - Have just one person pay for ease of getting out fast & then just venmo that person. Be warned that this place is spendy (recently was $36 per person) but I ate so much I was full the rest of the day so just think of it as 2 meals :) Honestly, I just love the experience of dim sum & I'm so glad we have this place in MN. Went to mandarin kitchen last night to try their 北京烤鸭 (roast duck), which they have a traditional style service of. What would normally be done is one duck is used for the three dishes, with the first being the crunchy skin of the duck served with hoisin, green onion, and soft bun. Once the duck is cut, they would use the bones for soup for the second course, and the rest of the meat for a stir fry with veggies. Mandarin Kitchens take on this was a bit different. They brought all dishes out at once, and a waiter started assembling the hoisin buns. But they were not buns, they were cold uncovered mooshoo pancakes. All the food came out lukewarm except the soup, which had good flavor but they removed the meat and tofu and put it on a separate plate. The roast duck was not crisp, but a bit soggy and oily because it was cold. A few pieces still had feathers attached. The stir fry was okay, but the duck in that dish tasted gamey and old-- probably not from the same duck. All this being said, I will give positives. The ambiance is nice and the staff are kind and enthusiastic. The other dish we ordered (garlic tip stir fry) had great flavor but arrived cold. I would perhaps encourage not to order the duck at this time. Other dishes around looked nice, and I'd be okay with giving the restaurant another shot in the future. read more

Came here for a farewell lunch with my family. Got the lunch special with beef and broccoli with the cream cheese wonton side item. The dish was flavorful and very filling. There are generous portions of anything. I liked the koi pond when you enter and the atmosphere of the restaurant in its entirety. The tables all had a glass revolting platter to easily share food or tea with your guests. The soup we got was also pretty good. I asked for a bit of egg drop soup for mg wonton soup and they happily obliged. I love my soups mixed and this made my day. The service was the best as well, very friendly and attentive. read more

Went to this place on a Saturday and it was packed, waited 40 mins but it was hands down worth it. Right when you enter you see the juicy duck bbq and crispy pork belly. The environment of the place is loud and really fast- everyone is moving. Lol. Of course with the people with the silver carts with different food. Everything my cousins and I ate there was amazing, the duck (was AMAZINGGGG), pork belly, congee, the different shumai, chicken feet, pork dumplings , and buns. I almost forgot their TEA! I don't remember what the tea was called but it was really floral and pretty much revived our soul. I wish I took some photos but we were all so busy eating. May 4, 2024 This place used to be super busy on the weekend, but it was sparsely occupied this Saturday. The dim sum dishes were cold except for the steamed dishes that were covered. The ones that are on the tray are carried around and left on the counter if no one picks them. We shouldn't have selected those. Anyhow, we would not come back again. Half of the staff just stands around, looking out into the parking lot. While, only one guy service us. Yes, only one! So, why is it that we are charged 18% tips for Dim Sum? Lousy service. Our total comes to $144.95 and it's not worth it. It doesn't taste as good before, anymore. Everything feels rushed and unattentive. Maybe that's why they're losing customers left and right. When went to pay, the asian lady just grabbed the credit card without explaining the total. Everything is discreet and not transparent. Can't even get a thank you or a bow. Someday, they'll go under and wonder why. We should have went to a buffet and pay $20 per person than having spent our money here. I got some of the plates, which tasted amazing.. This restaurant is authentically Chinese, with many dishes you don't find at American-Chinese restaurants (jellyfish, congee). Once you see the fish tanks and Peking Duck inside the front door you know you're in for a treat. My picky-when-it-comes-to-Chinese-food twins (who are Chinese) LOVED it (so did we) and said "5 stars!". We didn't have anything too adventurous as we were there for lunch before a Christmas party. If you're looking for authentic Cantonese cooking that offers a wide range of fresh seafood, this is your place. As far as I know, there isn't anyone else close to what they offer in the near vicinity. We ordered fresh steamed prawns and they were huge; some of them even had eggs attached to them and with that soy sauce with ginger and scallions, it was as good as it gets. We also ordered the lobster noodles and that was another winner. In fact, every dish we had was excellent, from the soup which was made from fish stomach, to the fresh snow pea greens stir fried with fresh garlic, it was all very very good. If you looked around, there were mostly asian people eating and well, that's a sign of a reputable place with great food. I struggle. Because I love this place so much! I always get the dim sum on Sunday mornings. So good. Their ordering system is unknown to me buy they come in small, medium, large and special plates. I have no idea what are small because we always have like 25 large and 1 small plate. Wirth it though. Best to go with a group of friends. I haven't been here in over 20 years and the place still has great service the waiters were engaging and talkative very friendly. For appetizers we ordered the won ton soup a light broth very good won tons and the hot and sour soup which was definitely spicy and sour. We ordered the salt and pepper smelt which were smaller than other places. They were very tasty not too salty and lots of ginger not overwhelming but definitely can taste it. They also weren't soaked with oil very clean. Then we also got the eggplant hotpot which in Vegas they prepare it differently here it's a light sauce unlike Vegas they tend to be a thick sweet sauce. And the last item we ordered beef chow fun noodles were fresh and the beef were very tender a great tasting. They gave us tapioca dessert which was free it was good but too sweet for me. I have been to this restaurant for decades , used to be every week , at least once we patronage to this business. But today it will be the last time . If you don't want to be scammed by them , don't go to this restaurant !. Probably one of the worst thing a business could do is dishonest behavior and cheating customers. Be careful if you go , check the bills thoroughly . They added things that you don't order , and I am not talking few bucks . They will find ways to add the bills , including things that you don't order. The cashier and owner are so crooked , I just couldn't believe it. Where do you go for weekend brunch? The Asian in me screams out DIM SUM! And in the Cities, Dim Sum means Mandarin Kitchen. When you get there with sufficient time to partake, there's a wide array of dishes that come parading past you. The best thing to do is just say yes. Say yes to everything and try it all. There'll be some things you like, some you might like less, but it's a classic dim sum experience - and at a pretty good price, too. My only critique is that the custard buns were overcooked as the filing had solidified. If your party members aren't adventurous eaters, they can certainly order from the menu during dim sum service, but any dim sum veteran knows better. If you're a dim sum newbie, approach with an open mind and step out of your comfort zone. Enjoy the experience and try new things, you may find a new favorite! I think there is only 2 spots for dim sum in Minnesota. And Mandarin Kitchen is the only one with the rolling carts over the weekend. So plan ahead because it gets packed right at 9:30 AM when it opens. Otherwise there will be a wait, we went around 11:30 and waited only 15 minutes. We love it, everything is so good. I just got back from the Bay Area so it may have been too early for me to sample local dim sum but I have to say that Mandarin Kitchen was quite a letdown after the truly delicious dim sum we had in California. We arrived about 1:00 pm on a Sunday and didn't have to wait for a table but the food seemed pretty tired at that point. Maybe arriving earlier might've improved things. On the other hand service was friendly and our water glasses were kept full. The noise level is pretty intense with lots of clattering dishes. Taste wise you would do as well to buy a variety of frozen dim sum at an Asian grocery store such as United Noodles. I would not go back here for dim sum. I don't know if there are any better places in the Cities however. read more

My only regret is that there are no more stars to give.. Quite literally the best food that Minnesota has to offer. Moved here from California and quickly learned that Minnesota has a flavor & seasoning shortage. But THIS PLACE RIGHT HERE. Chefs kiss. We say that standard for this place is 20/10 star. On a bad day it's 11/10 star. The family atmosphere and serving style makes this place so comfortable. Did not bother asking us if we would be okay with strangers joining us (which would have been fine). This is not a place I would go back again. The dim sum food is mediocre. And on top of that I got overcharged for all my little dim sum dish by total of $17 after tax and a required gratuity tip ($13) for 2 person. In rounding, the total charge paid was $93 for the following order, which doesn't add up if you calculate: 4 large dim sum dish x $5.75, 4 special dim sum dish x $7.75, and 1 small dim sum dish x $3.95. I paid them in cash too and they did not give me a receipt. I realized it when I got home and checked their menu price online via Yelp. I hope this will help consumers be aware and when eating at this restaurant. They may get away this time but next time you won't be so lucky. Those who plan to go back but you don't speak chinese or you are not Chinese, be wise and ask for the dim sum menu showing the prices before you start ordering. The waiters and waitresses are not your friend and are untrustworthy. If you are a regular customer then you might not experience this. If you are a new customer or someone who hasn't had dim sum for a long time and need to take care of your craving, please take caution and ask for a menu as they will not give you a menu upon seating. I was craving dim sum while on a trip in Minneapolis and this restaurant want what was brought up as the best and only dim sum that worth it in the area. We heard that there's normally a long line to get in and to get seated so we made sure we got there early. Our friends that live there locally said to prepare to get there about an hour early. So we did and there was a line there, but not as long as I had expected, likely due to COVID. Inside, the dining room has plenty of space so they're able to accommodate a good amount, but by the time we were finished eating, there was a long line outside waiting to be seated. Glad that wasn't us in the cold out there. Overall, the food items were all fresh and delicious. I got my typical dim sum dishes and they were all so good I overstuffed myself, but that's necessary when you're at a dim sum place with authentic food. We ordered some other entree as well and it's average about $25 per plate . I understand that with the inflation going on they have to raise the price but the portion has to be fair enough. One of the few places in Minnesota with dim sum. They have the traditional dim sum style where there are people pushing carts around with the dim sum in it. I really like it this way because you get to see the food in person instead of pictures. It's actually easier to decide what to get when you see it. But also, your eyes become bigger than your stomach this way. Everything just look so good and you get it all. We got here at around 1:30 pm so towards the end of dim sum time. There was no line so we were seated right away. Typical during the breakfast/lunch hour you'll have to wait for a long time. But also, could be because of covid that people aren't out eating a lot. Who knows. There were still a lot of carts out and because it was slightly empty they came over quickly. I think since it was almost the end, the food wasn't as hot anymore probably because it was sitting out for some time but it's still good. We ended up getting 12 dishes for 3 people. See, eyes bigger than stomach. They don't put the price on the little check off menu so we had no idea who much the dishes were. But it was well over $100 so it was pricey. Worth it because we haven't had dim sum in awhile. Still missing a few dishes I like because they don't make it during covid :/.
