After not being satisfied with any of the more convenient chinese take-out places that deliver, I thought I'd try driving over to Milford Mandarin to get take-out from there. The food was no better than the other places I've tried, and was actually quite a bit worse in a few dimensions, in addition to being noticeably more expensive. The lo mein had a funny taste, and I found it inedible. The vegetable fried rice was pretty flavorless, low in vegetables, and the rice itself was a bit hard. But the most damning point was the customer service. I'm a vegetarian, and mistook the "Vegetable" section of the menu to mean they did not have meat in them. It only makes sense, since it wasn't the "Tofu" section, and all of the dishes have some vegetables in them. Anyway, I mistakenly ordered the szechuan tofu, only to get home and find that it is really a tofu and pork dish. When I called back, the person I spoke with was somewhat incredulous that I didn't know that it contained pork, since "it has been on the menu for 25 years!" I asked for a credit for just that dish, even though it left the rest of the meal just side dishes, and he refused. He said my only option was to drive all the way back and he would exchange it for something else. Given what I'd already tasted of the food, it clearly wasn't worth the first trip to go there, it certainly wasn't worth a _second_ trip back just to get something else that might or might not be edible. I'll steer clear of the Milford Mandarin and all of their other restaurants, and so far I'm still looking for good chinese food in the Milford area. read more

We've tried a lot of Chinese food, and I think everyone's tastes are just different, but this had the kind of boneless spare ribs I love! We also had mooshi pork, lo mein, and spicy tuna maki. Everything was good. Servers were great. they had a sippy cup with a twisty straw for our 2 year old, who is very picky, and he enjoyed his water and the food. I understand Christmas Eve is a busy night but they need a better system. I ordered at 5 online and paid including tip. After I paid I found out it was a 120 minute wait. I figured ok I get it's a holiday. Showed up two hours later to find out they were two lines one to stand on to get a ticket to 10 stand in this line to wait. The boy who came outside kept saying we could wait in our cars. Waited for an hour and 40 minutes to only eventually find out my order had been ready and had gotten cold and no one bothered to call. This is the best Chinese in the area. Beautiful restaurant that is comfortable with a nicely renovated lounge. The food is consistently very good. We go here once a week on average. They also do a great takeout business. Buffet on the weekends is very good and I have become a bigger fan of their sushi lately. My favorite items on the menu are the Celtic Maki, mermaid shrimp, salt and pepper shrimp, lobster with garlic and scallions (when available). I grew up in Milford, and when I return to visit my parents and they ask what I want to eat, my answer is always Chinese food - and they know that when I say this, it means MIlford Mandarin. The food is plentiful, awesome, and memorable. The crab rangoon is my favorite. This place is what I think of, when I think of Chinese food. Since I refuse to rate a restaurant based on the decor... The food is the same below-average fare you can get at cheap buffets with exponentially larger selections. Adding sushi, always a good idea. Unless the fish is bland and your customers don't know what they're eating because the sign for all of it simply reads "sushi." Nothing else stands out, all of your food just blends in as one sodium-inundated paste. And your oyster bar? You're wasting your time and money. I'm generally a fan, have been coming here with my family for many years. It's the go-to Chinese restaurant in Milford since Pago went out of business and Buddha is disgusting. The prices went up after they remodeled a couple years ago, and they began charging for tea, which is bullshit to be honest. They did improve the food quality and expand the menu to include sushi though, so it almost balances out. Note I say almost; there is no reason a Chinese restaurant should ever charge for tea--it's like fortune cookies at the end of your meal. Seriously; I'll give you another star if you stop charging for the tea!! The weekend buffet is great; a good selection without being overwhelming or all the same stuff week after week. My dad gets it about once a week, and I can count on both hands the number of times I've visited in the last 5 years and NOT come here for the buffet (holidays not always included)! They always have the staples, but mix up some of the main dishes so you always have something new to try. The staff is friendly and attentive without being overbearing. If it's really slow during the buffet, they might hover a bit, but it's typically not too pushy. read more

We were shopping in the Quarry Square plaza and decided to have lunch at the Mandarin Restaurant and we both had a great meal. The buffet had many things to choose from and I think I must of tried just about all of them :) We were in there between lunch and dinner, it wasn't to busy at the time so we had a chance to meet the owner Kenny. He was very nice and made us feel like part of the family. It was nice to see him take some time to say hello and welcome us to his restaurant. The first time I always try their California roll to do an apples-to-apples comparison, and found thir version to be excellent. The service was quick and the whole atmosphere has improved since the remodel. it used to be a boring buffet-type restaurant, and now it has an extensive menu with all types of Asian selections. The service was great, I am looking forward to coming back here again. My only suggestion is to make sure the tea is hot when brought to the table. read more

Before reading the rest of this I want to get to an important point. DON'T DRINK THE WATER. I have contacted the Town of Milford regarding my health concerns related to my recent visit to this restaurant. I've never really been a huge fan of the Mandarin so when a group of friends decided to have a get together there I wasn't overly thrilled. But since some of our group we're huge fans I went along thinking perhaps I was being unfair. Perhaps Not. Despite the fact the restaurant was half emptly we had to wait while they prepared a table for a party of 8. This is the first time I've had to wait after calling ahead. Apparently they have a survey they are requiring their serving staff to push. I don't have any problem with this as I'm fully aware most customer service environments use these surveys these days. But this is the first time I've had a survey shoved down my throat. The server kept plonking a survey down in front of each of us until we filled it out. which was odd given we had just ordered couldn't answer the questions. We all filled out the surveys, I used a fake name and email address since apparently you can't opt out, and they went back blank. I wouldn't be surprised if she went and filled them out herself. Also. be aware if you don't want the buffet, they will PUSH the buffet. HARD. We took a look a the selections on the buffet and it really didn't appeal so we asked for menus. It was a 15 minute wait for menus in a half empty restaurant. For drinks we ordered the tea and some of the group ordered sodas while I opted for a beer. It was when the drinks arrived the whole thing went from bad to appauling. DONT DRINK THE WATER! No kidding. Just don't. The tea and the sodas, all made from the same water source when it comes right down to it were undrinkable. I feel bad for the rest of the party as I had the only drinkable beverage there. This entire group has vowed not to return and have expressed our concerns to the appropriate authorities. Eat at this restaurant at your own risk. read more

I had been going to the Mandarin for 17 years. I used to love this place. Was in at least once a month. Now the food just stinks. Portion sizes shrunk and the ingredients don't taste fresh. And the service? ... What service? The moo shi sauce is too brown, too salty and too much. All the food tastes like they stated with the same MSG paste. Tried this place for the first time last week. The bartender was very friendly and joked with us. The food was good and they were very accommodating. Only complaint is the rice was a little undercooked and the peas in it were very dry! We will definitely give it another try. Came here with my husband and 2 kids (3 and 5) for dinner. We grew up in Boston so we're familiar with a lot of the dishes on the menu. There are a few authentic dishes there. We ordered fried soft shell crabs and Calamari for apps. I got a small hot and sour soup. We also got a sushi roll for my daughter and a pan fried dumpling for my son. We also got a siu mai to try. Most of the food came out hot and was great. The dumplings and siu mai were just heat up from frozen meat. The price were high for those dishes. We also got the hot plate beef, Singapore noodles and a fried rice for entree. Portions were on the small side so we finished everything. I would say the chance of us going back would be slim. It was one of the most expensive Chinese meal we've had. Prices were 50% more than what we usually pay for an authentic Chinese meal in Quincy and Chinatown. read more

We went to the Milford Mandarin last night for take out and I was really disappointed. I ordered three dishes and the woman told me 20 minutes. I got there just before the twenty minute ticker and my food was ready. When I got home my wife and I realized both the Rangoons and Fried rice we're almost cold! The part of the Rangoon without the stuffing was cold and chewy and GROSS! We wondered if they just took them off an old buffet tray. The chicken dish we ordered was fine and at least it was hot. I was really bummed as I have been there before and we liked it then. So I will go back and give them another try but not for a while. There are better places to spend my money. read more

I called in an order on my home because this place was along my route. I shouldn't have because I'd given up on this place a while ago be ause their prices had gone up so much. I expected the order to come to around $23 to $24and it ended up being $33 for two quarts of soup, 2 egg rolls, one order of peking ravioli and beef fried rice. I questioned it and they showed me their menu. Their price was $6.50 for one quart of won ton soup! Thats ridiculous! I checked their menu prices against Great Taste and Lins Garden. I paid $9.00 extra for the same crappy chinese food. The egg rolls were nothing special. The ravioli were gummy dough balls with very little filling. The egg drop soup was bland, tasteless, and had orange things...peppers or pimientos?... floating in it. The wonton did have more flavor, but salty. They put spinach in the wonton soup too. The beef fried rice was mostly rice, not much beef. Basically it was a rip off for unremarkable, overpriced chinese food that wasnt even hot when I got home, which is only 7 minutes from my house...and I picked it up exactly20 minutes after I ordered it. I won't be going here anymore and will go out of myway next time for better food. The problem is, Milford doesn't have really good chinese food. Mandarin puts on airs like they are upscale because they renovated the place, but they should get some new chefs who'll cook great tasting food. I'm saying good by to what used to be my "Cheers" in Milford. The food is exceptional. What made it outstanding was the staff, from the Maitre d, wait staff, sushi chefs and kitchen staff. I knew many of them by name. But mostly, the bartenders who knew their clients personally, knew their preferences and were the catalysts to many new friendships. About a year ago the management changed. They were not concerned about the customer, just the money they spent. As a result of their mis-management, some of the best talent was forced to leave. I find it outrageous! They have scrapped on a goldmine! I loved this place so that my friends dubbed me the Mayor of Mandarin. I am relinquishing my office. We chose this location due to the great reviews. My review is about the service, not the food. We are from out of town and came here for lunch. We arrived at 2:50 and ordered drinks. I went to use the restroom and came back.. Our waiter was sitting folding napkins while watching tv. He waited until 3:03 to come take our order. He asked if we were ready and we said yes and I asked if I could order from the lunch menu (lunch is served until 3). I was told no because lunch had ended. In my opinion this is ridiculous considering we were sitting actually waiting to place our order! Yes we came at the end of lunch but it was still lunch. I feel like this was done completely on purpose. We had been on the road all day and finally got to our exit and found a place. But because our waiter wanted to fold table linens while we waited on him, we missed out on being able to order from the lunch menu.
