Have been here a few times and always enjoyed it. I normally order takeout but inside there are lots of tables and a big bar area. The staff is also friendly when you walk in. This was our first dine in experience at this restaurant, and we enjoyed our dinner. The food is quite good and the prices are reasonable. And it's in an area of limited restaurant choices, so overall, we think this is a good pick. We ordered: Gyoza $6.00 Mixed Tempura $9.00 Boston Roll $10.00 Salmon Sashimi $6.00 Scallion Pancakes $6.00 The Tempura was light, crispy and tasty. The Boston roll was delicious, with an abundance of salmon, and mildly spicy. The Gyoza was fried, hot and very tasty. The Scallion Pancakes were good, but not as good as the Gyoza and Tempura. The Salmon Sashimi was pretty good, a little tough and too cold. The service was excellent, and we left full and happy. The place looks clean and well kept, albeit not upscale. Got takeout the other night: crab rangoons, 2 filet mignon hibachi meals, and a kid's chicken hibachi meal. The kid's meal is worth it for the price - you get a lot of food. We got it with steamed rice which was the right choice. My fried rice in my filet mignon meal tasted old and didn't have any bits of fried egg in it. The steak was good though. They had two bags of our food all ready for pickup so we didn't check it before we left. We should have. They charged us for the crab rangoons but didn't give them to us. Did not meet the expectation. Having lived in Japan for many years my standard may be higher for Japanese Foods. The hibatchi comes with soup, salad, rice and 3 shrimp. My tablemate and I are both allergic to shrimp. When i mentioned the allergy that she acknowledged it but offered no alternative. Overall pretty good! Not my favorite Japanese restaurant, but they have pretty good hibachi and the food is always cooked well. Takeout is always fast, easy, and courteous, and the interior is clean and well decorated. If you haven't been before it's certainly worth a try! read more

The sushi is amazing, the waitstaff is always super kind and they put a lot of effort into making the place look good especially around the holidays. I live in town and me and my housemate went there one night, arrived at 9:00 p.m., sat at the bar and were speaking to other guests as we waited for menus, only to have the bartender come back and tell us the kitchen was "closed." Just for reference, the place closes at 9:30. It's sushi, I didn't ask them to cook Thanksgiving dinner. They told us we could sit and have drinks though..... on our empty stomachs? We have eaten at this Kyoto location many times in the past few years. Tonight's service was beyond awful. We arrived 45 minutes before they closed and were told it was last call for drinks and food. We put our order in right then. My crab rangoons arrived cold and my husband never got his soup or salad. Also never got a bowl to put our soy sauce in and no rice, which was ordered. She said the chefs had gone for the night. My roll was not the one I ordered, it was the only one left that night and I didn't care for the looks of it. We had to leave. I had no dinner and tho we were there for my husbands birthday, we were home and had soup for dinner which probably tasted better than the food that didn't even show as ordered. FRUIT FLY CENTRAL! Be warned- not clean anymore, disappointing was the word of the day. We used to LOVE going here, for many years, but now it has been unclean for the past few times (over a year we've given it a chance and re-chances!) This time we went to dine, sat down, swatted flies and bugs, and then literally had to move seats down the other end of the bar- only to then decide to get food to go. Bar staff re-using shakers with multiple drinks, no rinsing, no cleaning, leaving open bottles around to attract more flies. :( Disappointing Guys, Please clean the place up! We come here regularly and always have a great experience. I like that the place is never too packed and the sushi is always delicious. I love their crab rangoon s too and the hibachi is pretty good. But the sushi is definitely the main event here. We order a Mafia roll everytime we come, this is by far their best although also the most expensive at $18. Worth it and filling. The Alaska is also worth a try and only $6! The place is pretty affordable all in all and the waitresses have always been friendly. Don't expect authentic Japanese music here lol. Racist. Straight up racist. We were the only Asians in the restaurant, the only non-white people. Our food never came. Our soup was cold. Our waitress (name: Audrey, or Aubrey? Red hair with freckles) ignored me whenever I tried to call for her. She laughed when I asked when our food was coming. They prioritized all the white people's food over ours. I asked, and she said that our food hadn't even started to be cooked 30 minutes in, when I saw people who walked in after us already eating their entrees. I'll be contacting the managers of the other branches to see what they can do about this place. Honestly have never had such a negative dining experience in my life. Also, the place rank of beer. I know they were short-staffed, but one of the waiters, in an attempt to clean up our table, spilt soy sauce all over the table, the floor, the seats, and us? It came with two special rolls, ten pieces of sushi (including tuna, salmon, hamachi and sea bass), 10 pieces of sashimi ( including two pieces of hamachi, two pieces of sea bass, three pieces of salmon and three pieces of tuna). I will admit I haven't had the chance to explore the whole menu yet, but from what I have seen it's amazing. My first time I got sushi rolls which for me I thought was a bit pricey, but they have a range of prices actually. Off the top of my head you can get it to $4.95 to $10.95 per roll. But a each roll has a lot more sushi than you think! One (or two if your like me xD) is enough for a meal. And let me say it was absolutely amazing. You could taste the freshness from it's ingredients! The vegetables, the rice even the meat you could tell was so much better. The desserts looked great, too! I had a bite or two from my mother's plate of fried ice cheesecake and it was so creamy and sweet. The fried outer layer had just the right texture and crunchiness. And the place wasn't too big as they had small tables with white table cloths kinda stuffed together. But not to the point where it's suffocating. And a bar is right to the left side when you enter. We enjoy coming to Kyoto of Whitinsville. Small town sushi is often questionably considered but, Kyoto is fairly consistent. While not always perfect, and not then best of sushi I have partaken in, most of the servers and chefs work hard to please. A great night eating at Kyoto includes Mouse(sp) who does a great job on the sushi bar. He nails it with a nice presentation. We love having Angie oversee our ordering and beverage preparation.; she is consistent with preparation, always friendly, remembers the patrons by name and remembers what we like. Must say the "egg rolls" were a bit on the small side and at $4 not the best deal. For the entree, we split the Sushi dinner for two deal for $45. Not terrible price considering all the food you get. Starts with a flavorful miso soup and a salad with a sesame soy dressing. Your choice of 2 Special Rolls and chef's choice of 10 sushi and 10 sashimi. We had the Black Dragon and the Spicy Tuna. The chefs choices were tuna, sea bass, salmon and swordfish. The ginger that accompanied it was sweet and super tasty. The waitress was pleasant, attentive and meet our needs. My friend and I love it here. We usually go at least once per week. He gets sushi (usually chef's choice) and I get vegetarian sushi as I'm allergic to most seafoods. I can't get enough of their Idaho rolls, and the other veggie rolls I've had are delicious too. We always get great service from the wait staff and the bartenders... Ordered food over an hour ago was told it would be 30 minutes. Been waiting at the door for over 10 minutes the staff keeps avoiding me.

I went tonight with my family. It was our second time. The first time, we thought it wasn't bad but tonight it wasn't great. Our waitress was slow and forgetful. Unsure if she's new to waitressing or could not handle the multiple tables. The fish was not fresh. And there was only 1 brand of sake. I won't be going back anytime soon. read more

My family and I have been going to Kyoto since it opened. The food is consistently great as is the service. The menu has a full sushi section, great apps ( gyozo and veg tempura are outstanding ) as well as a full hibachi menu. ( it's Hibachi without the shrimp tossing, the "Peepee Fireman", or the high price point.) They cook everything in the back kitchen. My wife and I like to eat at the bar when it's just us, and the bartenders are fast, make great conversation and are extremely pleasant. This is our go to local restaurant. I didn't give it a five, because a place has to be something incredibly special to rate 5 stars. Kyoto is a solid 4 after 50+ visits. I've never had a poor meal or bad service. Very reasonable prices, sushi is 1/2 of what you pay in most places, but it is the same quality. I'm a pretty good judge of sushi, and the ingredients at Kyoto are fresh and perfectly prepared. Bottom line, nothing fancy, but consistently great food, drink and service that costs 1/2 of what a meal at Feng in Millbury or any other full serve Hibachi restaurant costs. read more

This was our second time here as we thoroughly enjoyed our experience last time.the first red flag , we got there at.11:30. The sign on the door said 11:30 for opening. We gave it 10 minutes and then called. The woman on the phone had such a cruddy attitude and said "well we don't open until like noon"...the attitude was the next red flag. And when they finally opened, we weren't greeted, but she said "need highchairs?" And proceeded to push remnants of yesterday's food off. She put the chairs at a table several feet away from the door where we stood and said "all set" as she walked seat.. Third red flag.. She never told us her name(lucky for her the receipt did and her name was Kelly)... And never asked if we wanted an appetizer Even though it was lunchtime, we ordered two dinner meals ($20 each)..... And yet..still cruddy. Never asked how anything was, we had to ask for refills. She greeted and giggled with other tables. The food is great but if she's ever working again if (and a big if) I go back I'm going to leave.. Don't work in this business if you can't deal with it. read more

Went there for lunch. Location is in the former Friendlies on a somewhat low scale lot consisting of a pizza place and a variety store. Inside the place looks decent. The bar is definitely the centerpiece of the restaurant, as it takes up pretty much the whole wall facing the street. if you are a drinker you will like it. Service was a little slow, but we got there right after opening when others were coming in too. Not a big deal. The real tablecloths are nice as are the cloth napkins. Utensils and plates are good too. The crab rangoon appetizer was ok. The main courses were Teriyaki-based as should be expected in a Japanese restaurant. They were ok, but quite salty. Nothing to write home about. I also have to mention that the 70's easy rock music did not quite fit in with the place. Kind of weird hearing the Carpenters and Lionel Richie while the Pats are on a big screen TV some 15 feet away. Not exactly an authentic experience. read more
