My family used to come here since the original owners when I was a kid .. for the past 3 years I've been coming with my daughters for lunch all the time .. they love the shrimp wonton soup and lo mein..my husband and I even enjoy the duck .. We came in tonight after a movie at 8:30 pm .. we sat down and ordered 3 soups and I told the wAiter that I might only be ordering the soups since it was late and they were just craving mandarin .. in a very rude manner he began to tell me that he would have to charge $5 per soup because there is a $15 minimum to sit down, then he started to lecture me about how do people expect to go out to dinner and just order soup and pay so little .. he said we would have to close down then.. I was just so shocked at what was happening I stayed quiet and then he said you should just take it to go.. I went over to the "boss" and asked him where on the menu does it say there is a minimum to sit down .. he barley replied and walked away again , I was treated in such a rude manner I'm baffled . So I sat down and said that's fine I'll order the soups , charge whatever you want . But then I got so upset thinking about how I was spoken to that I said just please put it to go . I said to the man at the front desk that I was surprised about the treatment and that it's a shame they rather lose a customer .. and he just nodded and continued ignoring me .. The best Chinese food in Rockland County. A family restaurant, many of the wait staff have worked there as long as I've been going there (my entire life). Some of my family's favorites are the Dragon and Phoenix and the Szechuan String Beans. The portions are large and well priced. Scallion pancakes couldn't find a scallion in the fried to a crisp pancake. Inedible. General tso chicken could not bite into the Meatball looking chicken. Hard as a rock. Stood there for an hour and then was told ten minutes and order would be ready. 45 min later I'm told at least another 30 min. They just lied and lie to keep you there. The sweet owners play Happy Birthday for us and our child on their harmonicas and remember every detail of our family situation and genuinely care anout how we are! We had enjoyed this restaurant many tmes under the past ownership, but I don't know what happened since the new people took over. Aside from some pork dumplings as an appy, we have never, never had such a bad Chinese meal (moo shu pork & Orange beef) in our entire lives. I feel sorry to admit this, but it was so bad we threw the leftovers out without even giving them another chance. Didn't even offer them to the dogs. This area is hurting for good Chinese sit down restarurants, and even the take-outs stink. There is only a sprinkling of meat in the "meat" dishes, leaving the balance of the meal bland and tasteless, even the schezuan. As an avid Yelp reader, I had decided to go to Mandarin based on the positive reviews I had read along with the fact that the sign for this restaurant had been there ever since I can remember, dating all the way bag to the Rag Shop days. I have now been there twice and will continue to support this business. The first time I went there I ordered Chicken Chow Mein Fun. Mostly how I judge chinese food is based obviously on taste but secondly on protein quality. The meat here tasted very fresh and had a certain texture that I can only describe as unprocessed. I know that sounds weird but unfortunately, many restaurants do something to their meat that seems like there were some unnecessary steps taken to prepare it. The second time I went, a friend of mine and I decided we will order first then go to the wine store in the same plaza to have something to accompany our meal. by the time we got there it was closed and the owner of the restaurant asked us what we had planned to get. We told him some red wine. While his wife cashed us out, he went behind the bar put a 4pak of small wine bottles in a bag, handed them to us, and told us to enjoy! I give them 4 stars not only for the quality of their food but for the hospitality. I know this is not something to expect but needless to say that a little bit goes a long way. A $10 gift from this owner made this new customer, a loyal customer. read more

One thing is for you to not understand your waiter, another is being barked at that you are ordering what he picks for you because you cannot understand him. The place was dead for lunch, one sign. He didn't ask what i wanted to drink and gave us all waters. Fine. But the food choices were so unclear. And you can't understand the waiter! Created an awkward feeling in the room, btw. The food and service are very good at this Chinese standard in New City. Unfortunately, their prices are high for what they offer, and as a result, there are usually more empty chairs then occupied ones. Got many dishes for take-out yesterday as we had some friends over last minute. I haven't eaten here in many years(although my teenage daughter and her friends sometimes go) and was worried from the yelp reviews that it would not be good. Everything(lo mein, fried rice, black pepper shrimp, chicken & broccoli, beef w/ oyster sauce, eggplant garlic sauce, General Taos tofu) we had was really good( a bit pricy for the sizes of the dishes) and I would definitely go back. Meh - had MUCH better... We decided to try this place tonight. The service seems rushed, with barely any time to enjoy a glass of wine before the meal was delivered. My wife has a seafood platter and barely ate any of it. The scallops in the meal were not good. I had General Tso's Chicken. Both meals came with white rice. I decided to have pork fried rice, which was at extra cost. The highlight of my meal was the rice. My advice - try somewhere else. Best Chinese in New City. Awesome they have shrimp wonton soup. Spare ribs are great. Egg rolls could be a bit tastier. Main Dishes are terrific. Chicken with Cashew Nuts is one of my faves here. One star doesn't even qualify for my experience here. I have been going to this restaurant for the past 15 years. Last time I was there, the service was poor, so we left a smaller tip. This time we came, the waiter, Roger refused to give us a drink, we had to almost get up ourselves to get it, spit in our food, and cursed at us. I would think someone would improve their service from the previous time, but I'm assuming I'm wrong. I would advise people to not go to this restaurant. No one deserves treatment like that. It's sad to see poor service in a rearaurant with no customers. Roger lost more than his precious dollar tonight. Anyone who has been in this industry for over 25 years, such as Roger stated many times, should be very clear on customer waiter relationship. I don't think yelling and cursing at then is the most appropriate . Good service or just a water would have been very much appreciated. read more
