    MACS roll and Volcano roll.
    Emma G.

This was a surprisingly underwhelming and disappointing experience. This place clearly has a strong reputation in the area, and that vibe was all over the establishment when I walked in to grab my lunch. Everyone was very nice, and the sushi chef behind the counter generously gave me a huge piece of a spicy tuna-dominant free sample. I'm willing to believe this could have just been an off day and/an anomaly, but in the moment it was just not good. I actually chose New City Sushi last week because it was National Cupcake Day and there was a neighboring establishment that seemed to be a viable destination to ring in this not-exactly-legit holiday. I work a little further north in Rockland so it's also difficult to find decent sushi that's not inexplicably being sold in a pizza place (I know. Mystifying.). This was probably a 15-minute drive or so, which is right around my limit for a lunchtime adventure. This was my first time going into New City, and while it was definitely a bit more chaotic than the area surrounding my office, it wasn't too hard to find some parking right down the street. From what I could tell, New City Sushi is one of several sushi establishments I've been to within the past few months that doesn't seem interested in reopening for dine-in in the wake of COVID. Certainly within their rights (and for what it's worth, my favorite sushi place, Kenko Sushi in Lincoln Park, NJ has not either), but given my experience here, it's hard not to wonder if the quality may have gone a little downhill as a result. As mentioned, I was provided with a free sample (always a nice touch), which was tasty. It was predictably a little spicy/flavorful but honestly is something I'd get on its own. Unfortunately though, it was the highlight of my meal. I ordered the MACS (which stands for mango, avocado, crab and shrimp tempura) Roll ($10) and Volcano Roll ($13.50). The presentation value was interesting; as you can see from the attached, the Volcano Roll was assembled in what looked to be a flower blossom pattern, with the primary contents of the roll in the middle. Intriguing idea, but it didn't really work. The actual rolls lining the outside were cut in a slant downwards to accommodate the interior, and as a result it was very difficult to actually scoop and keep the "blossom" toppings on the roll. Not sure what the thought process was beyond the initial presentation value. To add to that mild annoyance though, the roll was very bland, probably the worst volcano roll I've had to date. It just didn't have any flavor, and the overreliance on the crunch and rice overpowered everything else. It was also very dry, which is a bit unusual in my experience with this type of roll. Adding some soy/eel sauce, or maybe some kind of chipotle mayo drizzle could have gone a long way here. The MACS was equally disappointing although that was at least easier to eat. It tasted and looked like it had some soy sauce on it, but this was also just as bland as the Volcano. I'm a big fan of mango inclusion in a sushi roll (there's a great one at Honshu in downtown JC), but the mango in this didn't have much of a taste and based on texture wasn't quite ripe yet. Again, this seems to be an almost universally acclaimed spot. I'm really not sure what happened here. The price point is really good, especially for special rolls, and the free sample I got WAS tasty. Hopefully they open up for seating because I would be willing to try them again in that capacity though I am going to cross them off my list for future lunchtime excursions.

    Nice thick pieces of fish

Decided to come here for lunch and I am glad I did. It is a small mom and pop place and super cute. Does not fit more than 17 people (according to the fire sign). I got the 8 piece sushi b special and added an Ikura sushi. The soup tastes authentic, does not taste powdery like some places. The salad has a slight kick to it but so yummy. Has little pieces of salmon in it and crab meat. The pieces of sushi were thick and fresh. I was stuffed and couldn't finish, had to leave 2 california rolls. Total came out to $23.30 (not including tip). I would definitely come back here. Might be my new fav sushi spot. I can see the place probably gets busy during the weekdays since the courts are around there.

Sashimi fresh. The salmon yellowtail and white tuna are the best

I love coming here with my family. The owners are very sweet and accomodating. Their service is a solid A+. The fish is always fresh and their rice is so delicious. Sushi is perfected when the rice is good, so they know what they're doing here. This is one of the better sushi spots in the area so definitely check it out.

Delicious We saw they had a very high rating on Yelp with over a hundred reviews, and headed there this evening. We were not at all disappointed. It was a smaller and more basic place than I expected but not busy and we got a table without a wait. Their menu was reasonably comprehensive without being overly long, great for us sushi novices. One of the other customers chimed in to let us know the sushi here was the best around, an appreciated testimonial. I got a Boston Roll and Philly Roll, and found them both delicious. We were six, and all very much liked our food. Service was very good. It didn't take long at all for our food to be ready. We also got a couple of free items, which was also appreciated. I'll leave the claims of freshness, etc, to the other reviewers who likely have more experience with sushi. As for me, I liked what I tried, I think sushi is fun to eat, and we had a great time this evening. I am happy to join in the chorus of positive reviews.

    Sushi/sashimi for two!

This was our second experience at New City Sushi after being away for two years.(just officially moved to the area) Everything we tried was delicious! We ordered the sushi/Sashami for two. The fish is so fresh! The miso soup was delicious, the spicy salad was delicious and they even threw in a probiotic dessert (I didn't try but my boyfriend said it tasted like mango yogurt) for dessert. The employees are so attentive and generous. Many people came in to pick up take out orders while we ate there. I'm sure we'll be back soon!

Lunch with friends outside and sushi bar for brunch too.

We were sat near a table of Moms who were accompanied by almost a dozen elementary school aged children. Their children were completely out of control... running sprints back and forth in the room, running laps around the tables bumping into other customers chairs, wrestling and laying on the floor and that goes without mentioning the noise. This party was finished eating before we were even sat at our table but the Moms continued to sit and drink for the duration of our entire meal while their children ran wild. The formula is reassuringly simple: pick your starch base (rice or noodles), your protein (chicken/beef/shrimp/salmon/tofu), add the veggie medley, and a signature teriyaki sauce ties it all together. Is it actually all that healthy? Probably not. Does it hit every tier of the food pyramid? Technically yes, if you throw in a cheese wonton. The meat portion is not as heaping as in the pre-recession/inflation days so the protein-to-rice ratio now requires an intervention. I routinely order an extra portion of meat and request extra sauce, so the more loaded platter can theoretically feed two. But who am I kidding! The food is always freshly cooked and hot, and while there is plenty of seating inside, the place runs primarily as a takeout operation, so ambiance is non-existent and not the reason you came here anyway. There's a small and largely uninspired sushi menu with some basic rolls which the sushi snob in me won't deign to touch, but ticks the compulsory "Japanese" box of faux authenticity. Ultimately, if you're like me and could eat some variation of chicken & rice every day without complaint, Sarkura consistently and dependably delivers, and is always satisfying.
