Mandarin - Crazy Maki, Godzilla Maki, and Spider Maki - Chinese Near Me - Westborough, Massachusetts

Tastefully decorated, it's dateworthy as well as lunchworthy. They no longer have their buffet, which was among the better ones in its day. Now back in the area, I've had two recent combos at lunchtime in a near-empty dining room. -- Hot and Sour Soup (n lunch combos): Sufficiently hot from pepper and lightly sour, with still-slightly-crunchy vegetation including a few kinds of mushrooms. Tasty broth that tastes slightly meaty. The best part of both meals. -- Sweet and Sour Chicken (on a lunch combo): Only slightly crispy and VERY slight amount of chicken within each piece. We often talk about chicken-to-batter ratio; this serving had the lowest I've ever had-- which I'd expect at a rough and tumble over-the-counter joint with pictures of the food on the walls, but not here. Thin, sweet sauce with a few cherries, stems intact. Aiight. -- General Gao's Chicken (on a lunch combo): Orange nuggets, well coated with a mildly sweet sauce, no heat, and no contrast to the texture or sweet flavor. Not crisp. Smallish pieces, decent quantity, but not tender or juicy. Reminiscent of a frozen product if not one in actuality. -- Pork Fried Rice (had with the Sweet and Sour): Midrange in color, lighter in flavor, closer to Rice-a-Roni, with onions, peas, and mini pork cubes. -- White Rice (had with the Genera): Fresh, solid, no issues. Service was minimalist on both recent visits. On one, the server was in the kitchen the whole time. On the other, the server walked away while I was in mid-sentence-- twice. At $16 - $17 with no appetizer, a bit much for a lunch combo, which should have some value. I also don't see the quality I used to encounter here years ago. Although the Chinese joint across the street isn't much better, there are many dining options in the area, so I don't forsee a return. Note: This isn't a referendum on authenticity or style. I like every Chinese style and every degree of authenticity as long as the food is good within that breed. This one isn't, but that's just me. Dateworthy, yes. Place was fine for Chinese food. Went in for lunch on a Saturday and there was plenty of available seating. Restaurant has beautiful decor and feels a bit upscale for Chinese but it was a welcoming environment. Got seated and served quickly. Our waitress was very kinda and helpful. I ordered the A3 combo which was Kung Pao chicken with peanuts. I opted for miso soup that is included with the combo. Miso soup was fine and tasted pretty normal. Same goes for the Kung pao chicken. I wouldn't say it's anything too crazy. Better than food court Chinese food, but nothing to rave about. It does its job well. Plenty of parking available in the lot. They have sushi and Japanese cuisine available as well. Nice if you're looking for some Chinese or Japanese food. read more

The food is better than average at the Mandarin in Westborough. Their vegetables are perfectly steamed. The beef teriyaki is tender, flavorful and generous. The Moo Shi pork is delicious. The restaurant is kept clean and I think it has a cozy feel. Service was pretty good too. Definitely will go back. read more

It had been a couple of months since I had ordered anything from here. The food was mediocre at Best. Ordered a poo poo platter for two and the beef teriyaki was overdone. The chicken fingers were dried out, we had also ordered white rice, which was incredibly gluey and fried rice, which was dry. How does a Chinese restaurant not know how to properly cook rice? absommm I will say however the egg rolls are consistently good here and so is there hot and sour soup. Both were very delicious. However, they do need to step up their quality on everything else they make because none of this is cheap especially for what we ordered for the platter. It's nearly $40 and to have most of the food becoming out terrible is not acceptable. If they mess up an order and you tell them about it, they just give you credit for the restaurant and don't bother to refund you. Why would we want a credit so you can continue to give us more bad food? Come on Mandarin do better. I know you have it in you. read more

Not great. Ordered takeout and wasn't impressed. The chicken and broccoli was just steamed, there was no sauce. Spent the night in Westborough, MA and hotel recommended Mandarin. Excellent food. Excellent service. I can not imagine anyone giving this restaurant less than a 5 star rating. A great combo Chinese/ Japanese restaurant. I have been coming here for years - it's my favorite spot for both Chinese and Japanese. The sushi here is very good and it's well priced, which I love. I also love their chicken lo mein, soups, and a bunch of the different appetizers. I would also recommend their lunch buffet (haven't been since pre-COVID though) - it had a lot of options! We visited this week as first timers after being told they are great. We ordered a sushi roll to begin with. It was good which led us to believe any other food would be as well. We then ordered the Bo Bo for two and the beef and brocolli. The Bo Bo for two was very limited in amount of each item and the food was very blah! Chicken wings are not flavorful or crispy. The crab rangoon had no flavor at all and the spring rolls just seemed cabbage stringy. We are trying to figure out where it is great and will not visit again. read more

WOW. Firstly, I was a customer for many years at the location in Milford. This evening i had very bizarre experience on my visit in Westborough. I stopped in on a busy evening for a seat at the bar, which was full with customers just hanging out, and it didn't look like anyone was leaving soon. I decided to go up the street for a drink and come back to catch the ball game. I returned to the Mandarin bar, which cleared out and took a seat at the bar. The bartende says I saw you come in and leave, which I responded. Yes, there wasn't a seat, so I went up the street for a drink before returning. The bartender served me my usual cocktail, and after a while, finishing and jestering for another, he said something didn't quite hear. After he served many people at the bar, I still hadn't received attention for another drink. I got his attention and asked for another cocktail, which he responded no. HUH? The bartender says he saw me walk in and leave, which I said yes. There wasn't anywhere to sit at the bar, so I went up the street to another restaurant and decided to return here. I made no mention of drinking or anything at the other restaurant. At that moment, the bartender made an instant decision to cut me off!!!! Meanwhile.. there were others hanging out there from when I first stopped in. I was totally baffled why the bartender said he had already talked to his manager. I didn't even order a second drink yet or get a menu to order dinner. I asked the bartender if he mixed me up with someone else (He's done this before). He mumbled something that i had gone up the street to another restaurant, and he wasn't going to serve me another cocktail. I'm baffled but I wasn't going to get sidetracked on a great w evening out by a local below mediocre restaurant. I talked to the manager who was nice but didn't seem to understand my point, so I gracefully said OK and left. UNREAL. Been there several times and it's been just ok most of the time , not worthy of a dining / driving destination by any means . Tonight we got takeout and a majority of it was awful . Chicken fingers and wings both looked and tasted like they've been sitting under a heat lamp for hours at a high school cafeteria. Fried shrimp smelled like something you would see in a dirty aquarium. Chow Mein was chunky ,not cut right and the rice had peas in it !! Yuk Growing up in Boston I've never seen peas in fried rice . Simply the best Chinese restaurant in the Worcester east area. It's pricey but the food is always well done, I especially like the satay beef dish and the lettuce wraps. Great drinks, typical but ok looking place! It's a no brainer for the food. My only criticism of the place is that it could use a much bigger lounge. To me they are really a solid 2.5 stars. We came in for the lunch buffet and glad we came in as early as we did because when we left at 12:45 there was a huge line waiting! The buffet is a very small two sided buffet with a sidebar for salad, desserts and the teeny tiny plate of sushi that they put and disappears in minutes. The food was just OK - nothing to really make you want to come back for. The chicken tenders were terrible - the chicken inside was hard and tasted old. I think the price is a bit much for such a small buffet for lunch. There are better buffets around that are much better for your $. read more

The food is good, pretty pricey but we don't get it often, did takeout today and I noticed (not sure if he is the owner or just someone who works there) was being very rude to the host, was standing over his shoulder trying to teach him how to take orders and swiping credit cards out of his hands and doing it himself, we sat down and waited and I overheard the older gentleman telling the host to suck it up, he brought up that he knew the host had school and another job and that he was tired but that he needed to take his job seriously and it was time to buckle down, and make money to pay bills and put food on the table. This just rubbed me the wrong way because the host seems like a very nice kid and I can tell he's tired and probably overwhelmed and as someone who used to be a hostess it just made me feel bad for him. So I would just suggest treating the staff a little better. read more

So 2 years ago I wasn't allowed to hold the celery on a take out order they blamed the pandemic. Went in and I was told you can't modify lunch specials and hold the celery but I could order the dish off the menu and order a rice separately. I was told if you let one customer change one thing they ask to change everything. Swap rice for lo main. I just wanted no celery. Not extra chicken just no celery. No wonder the place was empty at lunch. People stop going because the manager just doesn't get it. That last apology was worthless. read more

Wow - has this place gone downhill in the last 5 years. Going to Mandarin in 2014 was an extreme treat. Fresh cocktails, delicious sushi, and hot, yummy entrees. Sadly, those seem to have been replaced by low quality drinks, tasteless apps, and nasty entrees. On a recent visit, we started with frozen pina coladas, which were served to us in liquid form over ice. Looked like a glass of milk with ice, and tasted like pina colada mix with no alcohol whatsoever. And they were $9.50 each! My old favorite -General Gao's Chicken - is now made with incredibly fatty untrimmed chicken thighs, not crispy at all. On top of all this, the prices are very high. We paid $65 for a terrible meal. I'm so disappointed in this place because it used to be great. We will not be returning unless they go back to the way things were. read more

Was staying at a dreadful hotel that had recommended us dominos. Luckily we did not take that advice and found this place! More of a 3.5. Good service, massive space and it was full. Nice to see the business getting a ton of support. We had the hot and sour soup, egg rolls, Kung pao shrimp, beef and scallop sizzling platter and the salt and pepper shrimp. All the food was presented really well and came out in a timely manner. The highlights were the egg rolls (which aren't normally something I order or think much of) and the sizzling platter. Probably will never be back in the area but people should definitely eat here! read more
