This place is a hidden gem in annandale. We actually went to eat tosokchon but all seats were taken and we had no time to wait so we ended up coming here since it was right infront. But I'm so glad came here and happy that we found this place. We started off with ddeokbokki and kimbap and Chives Mandoo since we all like boonsik and OMG! We were so impressed by the taste. It was very similar to what I had in Korea back in the days brings back my childhood memories. Mandoo had very thin dough with full of chives, flavor was on point. We've also ordered potato sujebi it was delicious next table was giving lots of compliments about the food as well. And we ended up chatting with other tables how all the food was so delicious. My favorite food was the galchijorim. Fish was very fresh and had lots of fishmeat and the taste of waaaay better than tosokchon and every dish was beyond my expectation. This place will be my favorite spot in annandale from now on. Oh btw, I lived in LA for couple years so I'm very picky with korean food. Just underwhelming, came in for a small and quick meal and 2 of the 4 items we wanted to order was "no more" according to the waiter. Settled on getting 2 kimbap rolls. It's the only place I will get jol myun. It's just perfect amount of spice and sweetness. They make their own sauce from fresh ingredients and no msg added. Twice they got my kimbap order wrong and one time I found hair and a plastic square thing in my kimbap. But in restaurant experience has always been good. I came for gangduenjhang and whangtae dubu jjigae that I had a good memory eaten before. But I was so disappointed that the food went bad and the place is filthy. Now, I realized the owner must have changed. Food is bad under new management, even the owner is unkindly speak to customer that indicates he has no idea about the business. It has been over a year since I last frequented this restaurant and pulled my previous positive review. And it turns out Mandu Rang Kimbob Erang has changed owners and they are pulling out all the stops for their customers. The side dishes has increased from just three (kimchee, daikon, and odeng) to include 6-7 different varieties. They now serve their food in stoneware instead of just plastic dishes, which helps keeps the food hot, and they have changed their stock recipe for soups to one that appeals better to the masses. Did I mention they now offer combination sets, so odeng and kimbap or ddukbokgi and kimbap are just $10 instead of the $15 you used to have to pay to get both? You can't get a cheaper Korean meal in Annandale. The new owners are quite friendly and very attentive to their customers, which is really rare among Korean restaurants. The owner even offered the option of soy sauce and wasabi for the kimbap. They have also made efforts to make the place look more presentable and less like a dive. It isn't a full renovation, but you can tell they did the best they could short of a full overhaul. The new owners gets an A+ for effort, an A for a good start. As they figure out what to add and remove from their extensive special menu, it would be helpful if they eventually create a menu with pictures, for those of us that don't have an expansive knowledge of Korean food, so we can try out their new offerings more boldly. If you haven't been here in a while, it is worth checking out for yourself. read more

This place is close to my work, otherwise I'd go to Myung Ga (which is awesome). YUCK - I got the tuna kimbap ($4.99 for a roll) and the other reviewers are right; sloppily made and 90% rice. It came with a broth, but no kimchi or daikon. At least you have variety and the rice isn't cold and chewy as from grocery store chains. Myung Ga is the gold standard for kimbap, for me. read more

I come here pretty regularly for Tuna Kimbob and Ddukboki. I also tried Donkatsu. Food = 3: pretty good on average but quality often fluctuates. For example, there are times that the Tuna Kimbob barely has any tuna. Service = 2: Quick. However... I went once late in the evening and ordered Donkatsu - noticed it was quite small. The owner mentions that's because he ran out of bigger ones during the day. DID NOT TAKE ANY MEASURES TO REMEDY THAT. Ambience= 2: Old building with old interior. Went back today and the food has gotten better. Everything was super good and fresh. Order the donkatsu Japanese pork it's amazing. This has to be the worst kimbap I have eaten. If you like kimbap with sides opened, veges/meat falling out, and 90% rice, then I guess you will love this place. I don't and that's why I didnt enjoy it--I think there's a reason why kimbaps are ROLLED not folded over and squished. Not to mention their dduk-bok-ee (spicy rice sticks) was also horrible. Their soo-jae-bee (dough soup) had so much starch powder in it that it was basically a glob... not soup. The price is cheap, but it's not worth the money. read more

This is a restaurant that specializes in what we Koreans call 'Snack food'. So don't look for BBQ here. We don't always eat BBQ. This place is authentic in every way, low key, humble atmosphere, simply prepared food. Nothing fussy and fancy about this place. It's supposed to be like that. It's supposed to be one of hundreds of neighborhood cheap eateries. Some things that needs to be clarified for non Koreans out there. 1.Koreans do not make fresh ramen. To Koreas, ramen noodle always comes from a instant packet. 2.cheese kimbap is a real thing. They didn't make that up. There are these Korean roll houses in Korea and they make kimbap(roll) with all kind of stuff. Cheese kimbap is actually very common item. American cheese is actual ingredient. People love it. 3. Jjol myen is supposed to be really really rubbery chewy noodle with incredibly hot, spicy, sweet, vinegary sauce. If it feels kind of over the top, hard to eat, that's the right stuff. You may not like it, i don't particularly like it, but it is supposed to be like that. Ask any highschool girl in Korea. 4. Watery dumpling is watery because these small dumpling with chives are actually literally called 'water dumpling' meaning they are boil in hot water. That is how it's served. If you want steamed, get 'steamed buns'. There are totally different thing, and the size, shape, and fillings are totally different as well. 5. Donkatsu is rarely good in Korea. Only get it from specialty restaurant. You may see this in menu in these kinds of places but no Korean ordering this will expect homemade, fresh one because it's snack place. They don't specialize it. It is bound to be a frozen one. This place may serve kind of unfamiliar Korean food to non Koreans, but Go try anyway, it's what koreans actually love to eat. read more

I'm new to the area and I specifically went to try the pat bing soo here. I was so disappointed that they don't serve it anymore!! Especially after seeing the picture with the misukaru and everything...oh well. We tried the udon, donkatsu, and woori kimbop. Great for a quick kimbop, spicy kalgooksoo, odeng, and ddukboki when you are severely under-dressed and not necessarily too hungry but still want something in your stomach. The restaurant is extremely tiny but the food is quick and cheap. It is reminiscent of street pojang macha's in Korea. Everything tastes as it should, no better no worse, and that's what you should expect when eating at what is essentially Korean version of fast-food. Was hoping this place would be my Annandale equivalent to MyungGa Kimbap in Centreville, but alas it was not. It's in a cute little corner, and bare bones, which is always an indicator (for me at least) that the food is going to be delicious. I ordered the kimbaps and mandus, quality and taste was ok. Just ok. I don't know what the other reviewers are talking about it being a reminder of mom or Korea, because for the prices and taste it felt like robbery. upon first glance, it looks a little out of place - a residence-looking building among larger restaurants in a plaza with giant groceries. i dont know why they romanized the korean name of the restaurant, but it basically means "dumplings and kimbap (korean "sushi rolls")" in english. anyway, we ordered the ramen w/ dumplings and the "woori kimbob" which has artificial crabmeat and veggies, all surrounded by slightly sweet rice and wrapped in dried seaweed. the ramen is just instant korean ramen, so nothing stupendous, but it was welled cooked and the mandu was hand-made. the kimbob was pretty dang good. so we were still hungry (we're pigs), and ended up ordering ddukboki (rice cakes in a spicy sauce) and fried mandu. mandu and ddukboki sauce is always a score. AND THEN we ordered the pat-bing-soo (red beans and ice, along with condensed milk, tapioca balls, rice cake, and fruit). refreshing, but by this time, we were finally FULL and couldnt finish. interesting things about the place: you're supposed to go order at the counter (it says "self service order here") and you're supposed to get your own water and napkins and stuff, but hey, it's cool,at least you wont have to wait if youre dying for water, just get it yourself. the manager/owner was really nice, he said you could phone in an order, but there's no online menu, so here's a real short break down: dumplings (steamed, boiled, shumai, dimsum (?), and fried). kimbob ("woori", cheese, fish cake, hot dog, tuna). noodles (udon, cold noodles, spicy cold noodles, thick "chewy" noodles, dumplings in ramen, and regular ramen. specials (fish cake, rice cakes in a spicy sauce, pork tonkatsu, fried chicken wings). thats a lot to read... sorry! read more

Hmm.. Well, okay it was just okay really.. I was excited since a few reviews seemed to be good and Donald.P was there too haha it was really not as good as I expected. First of all, the staff seemed a bit awkward and told us that everything they have is absolutely delicious.. So of course I believe her and order like 5 items just for me and Grandma.. haha The kimbop really had nothing in it, just rolled up bunch of rice and maybe a little bit of spinach here, egg there, it was just ridiculous. I know it's priced cheap but they could've put a little bit more filling in it.. I could make better Donkatsu at home, and the buchu mandu was very mush.. Since AT&T was completely down in our area, I was a bit worried about my baby so I asked a lady at the cash register if I could use the phone. She hands me her cell phone,, uh.. also AT&T, I guess she didn't understand what I was saying, except I was speaking Korean to her the whole time... But anyway, I still gave them a good tip and left with a doggy bag.. The foot really is not that good.. Maybe it was just today? but I really did not eat much of it.. I gave this place three tries just to be fair. All three times were disappointing. Every time I went back I asked myself why I had given it another try, but I really wanted to be fair. Was hoping maybe next time would be better but nope. I don't understand how this place is in business. The idea of it and the menu is cool. If the food actually tasted good I'm sure it would be more successful but really...didn't like it at all. I tried the tuna kimbab because they recommended it. There was so much rice and so much mayo that it tasted almost gross. Nothing Korean about that kimbab. I tried the cold spicy noodles which tasted okay, but the sauce was so weird. It was not the typical way of making it. Something was very off. I've tried the dumplings before and there really was nothing special to it. Just tasted like store bought frozen ones. What else...I think I ordered a bibimbop style dish. and that was just okay. Overall I just really don't understand the food here. read more
