I met a few friends here for happy hour on a lovely Thursday evening. Surprisingly, there was plenty of free street parking just a couple of blocks away. I was greeted warmly upon entering the restaurant and quickly found my friends who were seated at a table for four. The happy hour deals last until 7pm and are valid across the entire restaurant, not just at the bar -- winning! I ordered a couple of rum and cokes and tried a grape sojutini. The rails were good and the sojutini was much better than I anticipated! At $5 each, this was a fine deal. I also ordered the famous Mandu wings, and the certainly didn't disappoint! I've been to Mandu 3 times now and it keeps getting better. It's a nice space, not too loud, and the service has been consistently friendly and efficient whether it's a lunch, happy hour, or later dinner service. My food faves, so far, are the pork belly dish w/ the tofu and kimchi, and the bibimbap served in the hot stone bowl. Both are flavorful and I'm sure I'll be eating more of them in the future. The bulgogi I had tonight, while flavorful, was pretty darn salty. I'll try it again though. Mayhaps they just had an 'off' marinade. So far, all the mandu has been good - beef & pork, shrimp, and veggie. I've had them pan fried and steamed and like them both ways. They're good, not stellar, because I think they need more flavor sometimes, BUT they make a good app or happy hour nom. Speaking of which, the happy hour deals are pretty awesome. An order of mandu for $3 and some really good drink offerings such as fruit flavored sojutinis for only $4. I've known about Mandu for years but never bothered going because I thought it was going to mediocre overpriced Korean food in the city that could not compare to the suburb options. However I was wrong as their ban chan was decent and they were generous with the refills. We wanted something simple and ordered the dolsot bibimbap $16 and the Korean brunch special $15 that's only available on the weekends. Both were delicious. The brunch was great for the amount and variety! Service was good. I loved the tall ceilings but found sitting in certain sections under the vent quite cold. You can actually hear your dining partners here because there is no music which is nice. I think the prices for the barbecue meats are quite pricey ($28 for just bulgogi!) and will probably stick to going to the Korean barbecue places in the suburbs for that instead. read more

Our highlights on the food end, as suggested by are waiter, were in the "other features" section. These had bolder flavors and were more unique compared to options you may be familiar with: - Duru Jjigee: pork belly with spicy kimchi sauce and rice cakes, which added a fun chewy texture - Dak Jjim: chicken thigh in red sauce - Bulgogi: marinated ribeye in the grill section was much better flavored than your average! Happy hour 7 days a week? It's real and it's good. I had the aloe sojutini even though I am not a martini drinker. The soju perfectly balanced the concoction - the bar tender recommended the aloe since it's the least sweet of all sojutinis. I am glad I took the advice and didn't order the fruit based. The aloe sojutini is slightly sweet in just the right way. Also had the mandu (Korean dumplings) steamed vegetable and shrimp. They were savory, flavorful and juicy. The skin was also cooked perfectly - thick enough to hold up well while dipping in the sauce. Go adventurous and try something other than jap chae or the bimbimpop. I had the Dduk bok gi - rice cakes in a spicy sauce with shiitake mushrooms, onions and spring onions. It's comforting, delicious and extremely filling. I highly recommend sharing. The rice cakes are longer in shape than I expected but it didn't matter. It has a texture like gnocchi but slightly chewier and it went perfectly with the mushrooms. I got the vegetarian version with tofu but it normally comes with beef. Bonus: ban Chan! Different kinds of kimchi, vegetables and my favorite spicy fish cakes. I had a great dinner here with a friend of mine last week. We started by splitting the shrimp mandu, which were very good and enough for three for each of us. For our entrees, I got the Dduk Bok Gi (rice cakes with beef and mushrooms), which was a little spicy and delicious. He got the Ohjinguh Bokum Guksoo (spicy ramen with squid) - I tried some of it and it was *very* spicy but flavorful. I loved that before our entrees came out, they served banchan. The tofu was particularly good, and the vegetables were all really fresh. My friend is Korean and he said he was happily surprised by how authentic the food was here. I spent a few weeks in Korea back in 2015, and this was the first time since coming back to DC that I felt like I was having really good Korean food. They also serve some Korean and Japanese beers, like Kloud and Kirin. The restaurant is really well-decorated inside, and service was prompt and attentive. There was nothing mind-blowing about the jajangmyeon (blackbean sauce noodles). The pro though is that the portion sizes are pretty generous. However, I understand the D.C. area doesn't have many good Asian food options, and I guess coming here would fill your Korean food craving. My friend and I came to Mandu for happy hour on a Thursday evening, and we barely got the last two seats at the bar around 5:30 PM. The happy hour is a great deal, and the bar was crowded all night. The bartender was nothing short of fantastic considering the bar was packed, and we saw him many times throughout the night. I ordered the Aloe Soujitini (HH $5), which was sweet and delicious. The bartender sold me on the aloe drink, and he said the other popular flavor was mango. I would definitely return to try other flavors. My friend and I also ordered three orders of dumplings (HH $5 for 6) mixing pork and beef, shrimp, and vegetable in both steamed and fried forms. Probably one of the few places to grab some decent Korean food in D.C. This place is super hipster with ducks on the wall and classic 2000's songs playing in the background. Got the Chicken Kalgooksu. Not a particular fan of the pulled chicken- rather just have the whole half chicken like from places like LA's Hangari Bajirak Kalgooksu. The noodles were a bit hard for my liking. The portion is huge though- it could definitely serve two. Service was alright- they checked up on us often. They refilled the banchan and drinks. My friend got the dukbokki. The beef was really good and very well seasoned with the rice cakes. This is definitely not a dish to eat stand alone though. I was really disappointed in the food and service. I've been raised in Korea for more than half of my life and was really excited to try Korean dishes in DC. The food was very not authentic and tasted nothing like the actual dishes. Example would be the gamjatang. It was overly sweet, salty, and thick, but the actual dish is nothing like that.
