I'm afraid I have to ruin the 5-star party. After reading all the incredible reviews I ran to this shop with two pairs of new slacks that needed the hems raised a few inches. I tried on each and the woman quickly pinned them up. I was a bit concerned that I was standing on carpeting and not a hard platform as some other tailors use, but I thought, wow she must be incredibly good! I gave them a week to do the hems and when I got them back the right leg of each was considerably shorter than the left! I took them back and tried them on for the owner and she agreed they were way off. She made an odd comment like, "I'm sure we would have cut the same amount off the bottom of each leg." Two things wrong with that answer: 1) these were two different brands of slacks (Jones New York and Anne Klein) and I guarantee they didn't have two different leg lengths on them when I brought them in; and 2) what about measuring the inseam?! That's what I did and they measured 1/2 to 2/3 inches different on each leg. But I thought no problem, anyone can make a mistake so I left the slacks with them again for another week to correct the hems at no charge. Pick them up a second time, try them on and they look great... from the front. Unfortunately, the new hem (right leg only) on both pants was sewn at a considerable angle and now the back of the right legs are dragging on the floor. At this point, I have to give up. I took them to another tailor who immediately whipped out his measuring tape (I never saw one at the first place), noted exactly where the left and right legs were completely off, and 3 days later I had my pants back and both of them the right length. Of course, I ended up having to pay two tailors to get it done :( I'm sorry to have to ruin the five-star streak at Manhattan Beach Tailors, but since I got the referral from Yelp I feel it's my duty to give an honest report. read more

Prices are reasonable and they do a very good job. I'm completely satisfied everytime I take my clothes and my husband's . I brought my designer jeans here, and work out pants and had it shortened with the original hem. I was surprised how good the stitching looked. It seemed like it was bought originally that way. I haven't tried dresses, but I'm about to try it. We'll see if they can work their magic. read more

The best place by far to have great tailoring. I like this place for my more expensive clothing. I have used them for prom and dance dresses in high school and bridesmaids dresses. You can try anything on right there and she will help you with everything. Very nice and friendly. My cousin came from Florida and needed something hemmed right within the time frame she was visiting, they got it done in 2 days! I highly recommend this place! read more

I brought in five pairs of jeans to hem as on the original (i.e., with the hemmed bottoms sewed back on once the jeans were shortened to retain the original look). I was happy with the outcome; they all came out neat. It cost $18 per pair and took about one week. I'll definitely keep MB Tailors in mind in the future. read more

A great tailor in the south Bay. They have a fair turnaround time for their services. While other tailors tell you to come back in a couple weeks they usually have my suits ready in a few days. I usually bring a couple suits at a time to have jackets made more form fitting and they do a great job. The hem on pants will last you a while which is a good indicator of a reliable tailor for me. I'm new to having things tailored. I've never been one to need hems altered, and for some reason I missed that little life lesson where, when you have good quality clothes, if you lose or gain some weight you have them altered rather than chucking them and starting over. Seriously, my wallet wishes I had been clued in sooner. The good news is I recently lost some weight. The bad news is I sadly did not get an accompanying raise that would allow me to buy an all-new wardrobe. At least I wised up enough to figure out that tailors exist in the world for people like me too, and not just for my petite and super-tall friends to have their pant legs taken up or down. So, I am trying out several tailors in the area. I've been very happy with the work Manhattan Beach tailor has done for me so far. I explained the situation to the owner, and asked her to give me honest feedback about how my clothes would turn out if I had them altered. Some things were not worth doing. In some cases they would not look right after alteration due to the way the garment was constructed. In other cases, they would need so much work that I could probably buy something new for equal the amount or less. So I really appreciated her honesty. For the things I've had done (mostly work slacks), I have been extremely happy with the work. She has a good eye for fit, and has discussed the fit with me as she was pinning to make sure the end result would be the most flattering. The prices are competitive for the area, and the time needed for the work has been reasonable. read more

I found out two weeks before my Brothers wedding that my bridesmaid dress didn't fit in the bust. I took my dress in to Marlena on a Tuesday and the following Friday it was ready. She expertly made the adjustments needed (we weren't even sure there was enough fabric to do it) and the dress fits perfectly!! The lace bodice looks spectacular and you can't even tell that the dress was altered. Marlena is a real miracle worker!! Fast, knowledgeable, reasonable & delivers better than expected. My alteration were for my wedding dress. I had accommodated for the timing in getting it altered because this was my first time doing anything like this, I had no idea how long dress alterations would take. My only exposure the time required for wedding alterations was hearing the girls in my wedding party complain David's Bridal was going to take weeks to get their dresses back after alterations. Hearing this I wanted to make sure I didn't run into last minute problems with my wedding dress. I was in contact with her about two or two and a half months before my wedding. Fortunately I was able to take advantage of the dual fittings. She will recommend this and explain that when you do alterations for size that will cause the length of the dress change. I was not aware of this but thank goodness had been in contact with her early enough to do this!!! She is so nice & so knowledgeable at what she does. The first fitting is when I learned about there being two fittings. I think it was ready in less than a week. I had the 2nd fitting about 3 weeks before wedding date. The alterations for the size was perfect, no more changes were needed for that. I wasn't sure if I should take the length up, she recommended it. I'm so glad I followed her advise. Within 10 minutes of the reception I was no longer in heels and if it wouldn't have been hemmed it would have been even longer than it was. I purchased a dress at Blvd. boutique in Manhattan Beach that I was wearing to a wedding and they recommended I take it to Manhattan Beach Tailors. The dress just needed a few tweaks to make it fit my body just perfectly and she did an amazing job. Picked up the dress and it fits like a glove. I was going to Marlena for awhile but 75% of the time she got the alteration length wrong but was nice and always fixed it. However the last straw came when I had pillows made. She not only took 4 weeks to make them and never having it done when she promised, but she used the wrong side of the fabric which clearly was the raw side. Instead of apologizing and correcting this error quickly, she blamed me for the mistake and took another 3 weeks to fix. Ugh! When it was finally done, there was thread everywhere. It's such a small community she really should be better about customer service. read more

I had two items that needed a major "fixing" because of another place I took them to had nearly ruined my clothes with horrible hems and were cut unevenly(4" difference in some places!) She's amazing!!!! Came in on a Saturday for a dress alteration and needed the dress by Wednesday. Even though she was busy, she was more than willing to take on my dress. I had to get it shortened and altered at the top. She was able to do both and make it look perfect on me. My dress had a lot of sequins at the top and she was still able to get it altered in a short amount of time AND at a decent price. I HIGHLY recommend her! read more

She patiently listens to what her clients want and then knows how to go about fulfilling their wishes, even when the projects are rather challenging. She's also very innovative and will make suggestions based on her experience and knowledge. Take our family, for example. We have been going to Marlen for more than 15 years. She has altered everything from prom dresses to men's suits to casual day dresses to jeans. And then came the "big one" - a wedding dress! My daughter bought the top and bottom separately but wanted them connected. Marlen was able to craft these two pieces into one gown and did it so beautifully. Then, many layers needed to be hemmed, which was tricky because most of those layers had a special trim on them. The final product was perfection. After presenting with my dilemma on Monday I returned the next day to find a detachable back had been created from some spare lace I had and it fitted onto the dress perfectly! This is the only place I'll go for alterations! Always done right (I don't even try my clothes on when I pick them up because I know it'll be done well) and always quickly. Marlena saved a dress that had been made incorrectly by the designer (custom dress) several years ago--I've been going to her ever since and have never been disappointed. I trust her judgment in how certain items should be handled and she'll honestly tell me when it isn't worth fixing or altering a certain item.
