What a shit show. After comparing storing companies online, it seemed like Manhattan mini storage had the best reviews and the cheapest monthly rate. I filled out their online calculator to see what size room I would need to fit all my furniture. The calculator indicated that a 4x8x9 room would fit my things. I know these calculators are just estimates and wanted to make sure that come moving day I was sure to have a room that was big enough for all of my things. So when an employee called to confirm my reservation I listed the things I would be storing to get a second estimate. He also said a 4x8x9 room "would be fine." I was quoted a monthly rate of $150/month, and decided to follow through with them based on that price. Fast forward to moving day. I show up with all my stuff and with movers and guess what? It doesn't fit! My room, which MMS had said would fit my things, was WAY too small. They tried to blame my movers for the fact that my furniture wouldn't fit, however they were literally using every bit of space they could and it was obvious that it just wasn't going to happen. I went downstairs to see what my options were. I spoke to Rupert at the desk, who had checked me in and had me fill out the paperwork in the first place. He told me that the next size up would be a 5x10x9 room, but the total was $302/month!! When I asked him why it was more than twice as expensive (when it wouldn't be twice as big) he instantly brought the price down down to $282/month. What frustrated me the most was that I would have to pay more than I had planned (and was explicitly told and reassured) to pay. I explained my concerns to Rupert, and he told me to talk to their manager Ron. But where is Ron? Nobody knows. He's there somewhere but for 30 min none of the five employees can find him. At one point, Rupert even has the gall to ask ME to go find the manager, telling me to "go upstairs and find the skinhead in a blue shirt." Not only is it completely ridiculous to ask the customer to go find the manager themselves when the employees can't, but I found his attitude and choice of words completely unprofessional. Nonetheless, I was eager to figure out my next step, so I roamed the hallways on the fifth floor of the storage facitlity maze to find the manager. He surfaced later and did not seem to care, or offer any explanation to me or the other employees about his mystery disappearance. But at least he was there, so all was well, right? Eh, kind of. He got the price down another $50. It took him another 40 minutes from when he showed up to when he made that offer, which meant that I had been at that location for four hours! Good thing Rupert was there with his comforting words while i waited:" I hope you didn't have anything important to do." Seriously? I could feel my blood boiling. Long story short, I ended up paying an extra $80/month that I wasn't anticipating because they explicitly told me to get a 4x8 room TWICE. Also, there is an additional insurance fee that is not mentioned or included in the estimate, which would have been nice to know about when I was comparing prices. Another woman who was checking in at the same time as I was was equally baffled and annoyed at that extra cost.. To sum up, go ahead and use Manhattan Mini Storage, but anticipate spending 50-75% more of what their estimate is. And don't ask to see a manager, or expect any sort of considerate and professional customer care. read more

They kept on switching me between different operators. I feel that they shouldn't offer this in such bold letters without any explanation. I have been using Manhattan mini storage for 3 years to store my dorm supplies when I come home for the summer. When COVID 19 hit i needed a special agreement in order to get my things into the unit as I was back in my hometown when my university decided to shut down. I had my friend open the account and move my dorm items into the storage unit and I paid for the unit until I was able to come back on campus. Unfortunately I have been unable go close my unit and staff has been very unhelpful in doing so I followed all the procedures to get this unit close and I am consistently paying for a unit that is empty. I had my friend who opened the unit email the staff for permission several times and they have denied her sending those emails which I have photo evidence of her email stating she is giving g me permission to close a unit I am paying for. Tonight was the last straw though the way I was treated was unacceptable. I waited an hour for my friend to get out of work to send an email over and over again for the woman to not help me. The entire time Jamela was rude, condescending, and she continued to escalate the situation more and more. It was like she was trying to entice me to be upset with her. She talked down on me and told me I was trying to tell her how to do her job when all I wanted was to close this unit which I have been unable to do for 4 months and have been told the procedure to do so many times and I have done it every time I am very upset with the claims of her saying I'm lying and I did not have her send the email when o have screen shots of said email!! I will never be using this storage facility again and I would like a refund for the last four months of me trying to close this unit. If I could give zero stars I would. read more

You're better off just tossing your important belongings into the middle of the street. A fire on the roof caused sprinklers to go off on October 14, destroying property in hundreds of storage lockers. If you called to try to find out what was going on, the phone number was turned off. The fire was caused by work on the roof - specifically an arc welder causing sufficient heat that combustible materials in storage lockers on the sixth caught fire. You know, clothes, papers, photographs... the kind of stuff you STORE IN STORAGE LOCKERS. I have a copy of the fire report. If the roof needed this kind of work, then storage lockers on the sixth floor should never have been rented out to customers. I'm still negotiating with the insurance company representing the third party roof contractors that caused the fire but damage was in the many thousands of dollars and many items are simply irreplaceable. On top of all this, a few years ago there was a pipe leak above my locker which also caused property damage. All told, I was a loyal customer for almost 4 years, spending over $100/month and wound up with property damage that was several thousands dollars more than the cost of four years of storage itself. It would have been cheaper to throw away my belongings and to have purchased replacement belongings after moving to a larger apartment. Some staff members were helpful, but overall the company was completely overwhelmed by this incident and were more or less unable to adequately deal with this situation. Sometimes acts of God are unavoidable (although this fire was completely avoidable). In the event of an act of God such as a hurricane, I have zero confidence that Manhattan Mini Storage has the number of staff members or wherewithal to help you. You'll be on your own. I cannot recommend their service. read more

Excellent Service. Ask for Delroy Campbell, the general manager. My mother and I had to rent three separate units and everything went as promised. The storage facilities are all above ground I believe. Very important since you don't want to risk losing your stuff in another Hurricane. The units are clean, organized, air-conditioned. Everything runs like clock-work here. And if for some reason it doesn't, Delroy will straighten it out. He strives on having happy and satisfied customers. We had a few glitches with our move and he solved all of our problems fairly and promptly. This facility is one of the most inviting and upbeat of Manhattan Mini-Storage facilities. It's a bit farther away but they have the best prices and best customer service. Also, when using their in-house moving company, Moving Ahead, ask for Billy and Adam. They did a stellar job the second move that we had. I have used Manhattan Mini-storage for over 20 years. These guys are the best and worth the price. read more

Rawl told me that he has all the time to show me spaces that matches my criteria. I felt extremely comfortable about my decision. ***** UPDATE ***** I am updating my review from 1 star to 3 stars today in light of the following: Jenny contacted me shortly after I posted my review to ask me about my customer account number. She transferred my case to the manager of the store i am a client of. The manager gave me a call, was very courteous and indicated that as a loyal customer since 2010, they would be able to adjust my rate back to what it was a couple years back. They do this on a case by case basis, it seems. In the following years the rate increase applied is still expected to stay the same, although the basis for that increase has now been reset. I accepted the offer. In summary it seems like if you are not happy about the rate you pay, the best is to contact the manager of your store directly and try to bargain. Not a guarantee it will work but as usual in america, it does not cost anything to try (a review on yelp may help as well though), and in this case this worked for me. I appreciate the fact that the business was very quick to address the issue and that they have enough commercial sense to do a gesture for loyal customer, this is the reason i improved my rating. I don't give it more that 3 stars though because i still think that those price increases are too expensive and i don't think it is good business practice. **** ORIGINAL REVIEW IS BELOW **** GREEDY BUSINESS INCREASES RENT 15% PER YEAR OVER THE LAST 4 YEARS I have been a customer of Manhattan Mini-Storage since 2010 and until today I was overall happy with the quality of their service, albeit a pretty simple one. However I have noticed in recent years a worrying pattern of egregious price increases in their rent. Indeed over the last 4 years the rent has increased at a staggering rate of 15% per year. This has gone for my unit from $34 to $39, $45 and from Dec 1st I have just been informed it will bump again up to $52/mo (i use a 4x4x4.5 box) While i appreciate that costs of service go up over all in our economy, it seems to me that a consistent increase of 15% per year is much beyond any measure of increase in the quality of service that they offer and even much higher than the increase of real-estate prices in New York over the similar period. Contrary to what is claimed in their annual letters, year on year I don't feel that the quality of service has evolved in a way consistent with a 15% increase in premium every year. Actually their service is exactly the same over time and completely minimal. I would therefore inform other potential customers reading this review that even if you are considering doing business with them through an attractive promotion you should carefully take into account this 15% per year premium increases before taking your final decision. As to myself i will now look for alternatives and probably terminate my contract with them asap. read more

The associate was perky and friendly and it was pretty easy to understand the rules and regulations of the storage facility. What sucks is that I have a refund from moving out early and it's already been a month and I still haven't received my money. I called twice, but the phone operators were very rude and useless. Great storage facility located in downtown Manhattan. I love this place not only because the space is easily accessible, clean and organized - but the staff is also great! I have never had an issue during the almost two years I have used their service. I have leased two storage units of different sizes as well as subscribed to their package receiving service (great if you receive work shipments or do not live in a doorman building). I would recommend this place first to any friends looking for storage. Hi, I signed up to use this facility a few weeks ago. The customer service there was very helpful and kind and gave me a rate that I thought was more than fair. All in all, this storage space is a total ilfesaver for anyone who lives in a small apartment and has run out of room. Moving the boxes in was very simple and they sell you extra locks, just in case. The guy there was extremely nice. **In an earlier version of this review, I complained a little about pricing. They explained to me that their model is like an airline company, which makes sense, because you might pay a little less each month for a space depending on various factors, booking online vs. walk-up, availability of certain slots on different floors, etc. This sense of scoring an "online" deal probably motivated me to consider choosing them for a storage space, so I'm going to chill out and give their marketing department a thumbs up. I really needed the space and they convinced me. The building is very clean and I have read a lot of horror stories on Yelp about other storage companies. VERY glad my belongings aren't in a dank warehouse with rats in Brooklyn, etc. Phew! read more

I've been a happy customer of the South Street Manhattan Mini Storage for several months now. The storage taxi is great and the drivers are usually very friendly. I pay only $29/month for a smallish locker which is perfect for me. Also, they accept my package deliveries! Some places charge extra for that. First thing the new customers of 220 South St, Manhattan Mini Storage should know that their storage space's rent will go a few bucks up every year (I see happy reviews of the newcomers, they did not know it yet, they know nothing yet). The current management was adding to me $8 every year. I use this location for many years. Years ago, the previous managers and employees were friendly and nice, they minded their own business. Even then the rent of my closet was also going up every year, but only $1 up. The current team showed themselves as negative and acting very strange. It is the self storage, but for a few years they were regularly following me to my closet, giving me long looks, trying to see what was inside of my room, much-much more. All these activities looked quite mental, and I had to write several complaints to the upper management, so they would stop manager Campbell and his employees from acting like total idiots. I wish I could switch this location to another, but unfortunately I need this area. I do not mention that I stopped receiving my packages at this location long time ago because it was trouble. Some males employees at the end of the day, when I was coming to get the packages, were in such condition that they were not able to do the minor paperwork, were making mistakes that could lead to problems. read more

The staff at Manhattan Mini Storage South Street have been extremely accommodating, understanding and helpful throughout the entire storage process. My two roommates and I were intending to store our belongings here for two weeks when we were in between apartments. Finding the right size unit was a breeze and the unit was very clean. Unfortunately, we were unable to move into our new apartment as expected. Even though we had already moved our belongings out of the storage unit expecting to move into our new apartment, we were unfortunately unable to do so and needed to move everything back into the storage unit. Kerwin was able to reactivate the unit that we had moved out of without charging any additional fees. Additionally, Kerwin and Taylor turned our bad day into a bright one by giving us motivational pep talks and making us smile as we moved back into the storage unit on the same day. When we were finally able to move into our apartment and out of storage three months later, Kenneth was extremely accommodating and was able to offer us a retroactive move credit which we didn't initially qualify for when we first moved into the unit. I was truly blown away by the staff here and would recommend everybody to store with Manhattan Mini Storage. Moving can be very stressful, but the staff at the South Street location will do everything they can to make your lives just a bit easier. Thank you again to Kenneth, Taylor, and Kerwin!! read more

This place is horrible! I first started using them because my friends used them at a different location, I chose this location because I was living near here. When you go online, you can see what they have available and for what cost so I set up a reservation and go in. When I get there, I'm told its not available but they have a smaller one and a larger one both which cost MORE! If you ask about the storage taxi, they won't tell you the availability until AFTER you sign up and pay. They tell you about signing up for a longer term which is a little cheaper so you do. When it comes time to sart moving your stuff in, you find out the free storage taxi won't be available for several weeks. I don't recommend them and I warn you not to rely on their storage taxi. read more

The only thing that I would complain about Manhattan Mini Storage is that they are not 24/7, because there are sometimes that we/I need emergency move ins. But other than that, there is nothing else to complain about. Although the location is a bit far from subways, I usually take a cab when I needed to use the storage, so it's no hassle. Angie there helped me a lot and led me through the whole process when I signed up for my storage room. They also helped me call the car service, and the staff there are friendly. Another thing about this location is that, its rooms are relatively cheaper than other places. (e.g., a 4x4x8 room was only $97 here compared to $160+ at 2nd Ave., the rates will change but the difference is sometimes big) Also, I lived in Brooklyn before and now I'm on vacation for a long time, after I go back I will think about having a storage room for like around $100 and rent a smaller but cheaper room in Manhattan for living, which will be much easier and tidier than needing to rent a big room in Manhattan and living with a lot of stuff. Their places also look clean and new, compared to some other companies. read more

Overall, both of them have resolve this issue gracefully and I would definitely recommend people to choose Manhattan Mini Storage. Posted Sep 8th, 2015: This review reflects my short experience with Manhattan Mini Storage and is subject to changes as I am still waiting for their reply. I have called and emailed Mr. Delroy Campbell of this issue, but he has not get back to me. I am a new customer who started a yearlong lease storage with Manhattan Mini Storage on Aug 1st, 2015. On Aug 1st, 2015 at about 12pm, I paid in cash for the month of August and received a receipt for it. However, upon logging in the Manhattan Mini website, my statement does not show my Aug 2015 payment and I am required to pay for the month of August again. On Aug 28th, I called Mr. Delroy Campbell, who claimed to be the General Manager of the branch located at 220 South Street, New York, NY 10002 about this issue. He told me to email him a photo of my receipt and he will get back to me. After emailing him the copy of the receipt, I waited for about 2 days until Sep 1st, 2015 and since he did not reply, I called him. He said he just came back from holiday and hence, he did not reply. After putting me on hold for about 5min, he said that the amount in his "petty cash" drawer currently appears to be less than $XX. He then said, he did not know why that happened and said, "I am not saying you did not pay for it, but there should be more than $XX if you paid for it." I have no idea why he would even said that and I am confused because why would my money be in "petty cash". I do not know about Manhattan Mini Storage's business practices, but I think that the cash should be in the A/R drawer, since that is what my receipt has shown. Before we hanged up the call, he said he would get back to me in another 2 days. However, after 2 days of waiting, he did not get back to me again, and so I emailed him asking about the situation. Unfortunately, he also did not reply me. It has been more than 10 days now since I first spoke to him about this issue but my billing account still appears charges for the month of Aug 2015 that I have already paid for. I could not pay the amount for the month of Sep 2015 because of the Manhattan Mini website system limit of 75% of current billing amount. I hope any of the staff members could rectify this issue before the system charge me with additional late fees that I shouldn't be charge for because of the error. As of now, I hope to hear from them as soon as possible as it has been quite a hassle to keep asking and waiting for Mr. Delroy Campbell's reply. Now, I regret not finding my credit card to use it on that day because my bank statement would further prove that I have already paid that amount. I was moving on that day and hence, I kept my cards in one of my many bags that was moving with me that day. I hope all of you, who are thinking about using Manhattan Mini Storage to use credit card if possible or even have a friend to video record the process. I know this might sound ridiculous, but trust me, it may be helpful for you if the staff there could not find your payment in cash. read more

I've been with this location going on two years now... And I have to say, they are never helpful when I go there, or call with questions (with was just once). On the two occasions I've physically been there and needed assistance (being I was new to the location), both representatives sitting behind the desk couldn't be bother to so much as even look at me when I was seeking their assistance - one even said to the other "you deal with it". I hadn't even asked the question yet, and this is how I was being treated???. Second time, the same sort of thing took place. No effort to help or address my needs, just making you feel like you're a bother to ask them. Now I just don't even attempt to ask them anything, just try and figure things out on my own. FYI: There lobby looks nothing like these pictures being shown to you. More recently, there was a question I had on my bill regarding an overcharge. When I called customer service, an animated system switched me to my location. A woman by the name of Julia or Julianna (hard to understand her), answered the call with attitude also. I just thought to myself, "Oh I guess they're the same way to customers not only in person, but by phone too. I asked to speak to the manager, being I really couldn't understand the lady (English not being her 1st language - and math not being mine). She was reluctant to pass me over, and when "Tony" the manager came on, first thing he let me know was i didn't need to be talking to him about this (as if he was too important for that). I guess that's not a manager's job - what about making sure their customers are happy with their service? Is that a manager's job?. I was really frustrated now, being I never bother these people, and give them my money every month - you'd think someone there would be offering me some sense of hospitable customer service. NO. You're not going to get it at the South Street Catherine Slip location. The only people that are nice to you are the actual moving company they hire out to move you (which is not Manhattan Mini Storage), and the initial people that sign you up by phone to register you with an account (being they want your money), but you never see or have access to them again. At this point, I think it's time to stop giving these folks anymore of my hard earned money for "Careless Customer Service". Time to consider different storage options. read more

He worked with my husband while I was out of the country and when I returned he helped me tie up the loose ends in a timely manner. The on-site staff here is friendly, helpful, and professional. I was frustrated by the customer service experience via email (caution to those who don't want to make phone calls: you're going to need to get on the phone here) and Patrick, Liz, and the others really helped MMS recover and keep me committed to my reservation. I qualified for the "free move" which was very effective. Cautions to those attracted to that: 1) there is a minimum stay required and the free move has a 2.5 hour max (with .5 taken out automatically for travel to the starting point); 2) they'll schedule you into a four- or six-hour window and you'll have to live with what time they say they're showing. If you get Jeffrey on your crew, you're in luck: he's friendly and funny, very speedy and an expert in making things fit. I went in concerned about how long it would take to get from my walkup to the truck -- the 3-person crew (one at truck, two running) were safe and swift. I did feel a little nickeled and dimed needing to pay $2 cash for the meter but I guess MMS was going to make the team pay out of pocket for that. Additional caution -- while you're on the two-hour clock there's a lot of paperwork to review, including committing to covering any parking tickets incurred. Generally, I recommend trying not to get caught up in the speed. I felt a little cheated into buying materials when one of the movers said we'd need more tape so I bought a $7 roll and then once I opened it he said we should just use a leftover empty box. read more

i'm incredibly impressed by the professionalism and kindness exhibited by ronald, the assistant manager who helped me select the appropriate storage unit and walked me through the details of the lease and insurance coverage. my stuff was moved from just down south street, by pier 17, and it was great chatting with angelique, who like ronald, is very kind and personable, while waiting for my movers to load everything. such great customer service is hard to find, and i look forward to working with them for as long as i'm in need of storage. read more
