Story time! I've had a rough go of it with my back issues for over 10 years, and when I fell down a flight of stairs last new year's eve, I really wasn't looking forward to the New Year. I suffered two fractures, and needed time to heal. (Fast forward) One doctor said I'd need surgery for my spinal issues, so I got a second opinion. The second doctor suggested physical therapy before suggesting injections or something more severe. I happened to pick MPT off a list of places I could have gone, and I'm really happy that this place worked out with my insurance policy. FIrst of all, Maya is knowledgable and lively to talk to about my options and my next steps. She's also flexible when I need alterations that may seem annoying to other people. And then Erica and Kevin make it easy to show up and be entertained with conversation to divert attention to the incredibly painful and beneficial process of the Red Cord, massage and exercise processes they go through. And John is very targeted with the acupuncture - like, I really don't know how he finds Exactly the spots that hurt, and he never misses. His conversations are really fun, too. It's easy to feel like "just a number" in Manhattan services, but they do a great job of remembering your name. It's only been a few weeks and I'm relieved that surgery may not have to happen now! I have been going to Manhattan Physical Therapy since August. I chose to go there because I was trying to find a place to deal with some facial paralysis that did not go away and I was hoping PT and acupuncture would have some positive results. the staff is very personable and when you are there very informative, gentle and caring. I did find that I wasn't always sure who was going to help me and sometimes info wasn't passed on but everyone was qualified and very nice. If you are looking to work with a single person only this probably isn't the place. Ultimately, I had to stop because it was just too expensive for me per visit and length of time (visits were about a half hour or so ) and my schedule was all over the place and i kept having to reschedule which I am sure was annoying. I did have some movement happening in the face though the return of my smile is stubborn. I would definitely recommend them if you can afford it or if your insurance covers. read more

I picked this physical therapy place due to its proximity to my job, knowing next to nothing about it. It happened to be the best place to do PT! It was an amazing experience. The team helped me recover from a painful herniation and also brightened up my day every time I stepped through the door. I recommend this place to everyone! I started going here in 2016 following a surgery to repair my fractured femur and torn cartilage in my knee. I've seen many people have knee surgery and attempt to work themselves back to 100%. They usually end up giving up sports and have a hitch in their stride or worse. I went into this with the idea that I wanted to get better and wanted to get as close to 100% as possible. With that being said... My first visit was mostly an assessment of my knee post surgery and light work on my leg muscles and core. The followup visits were more intense with a continuous assessment of not only the repaired knee's strength but of the supporting knee's strength, as well as both legs, core, back and shoulders. Not only did they show my workout to do while I was at home between visits but they also EXPLAINED what the exercises did to help rehab my knee. With that information, I LEARNED that rehabbing a knee is a whole body solution, not just an appendage. While there, I explained to them my overall issues I was having with my throwing arm due to playing sports. They also helped me work on gaining strength back in my arm AND working on strengthening surrounding muscles in my shoulder to take the pressure off the problematic area. The office is clean. The staff is very nice. I would say who's my favorite staff member but I know I have to go back for another appt. I don't want to have to do extra PT work. :) They will joke with you and others while they work with you. I had a bad experience with acupuncture, but that's just do to me and my overall fear with non-innocuous needles. I'm happy to say that I still go and I've gotten back to running and I'm almost 100%. If you have any questions, please be clear with them. They are NOT mind-readers. Doctors can only help you if you are honest with them and you WANT to help yourself get better. This isn't a movie or video game where you heal miraculously. read more

This place isn't horrible, but it didn't work for me. I went to Manhattan PT for an ongoing lower back issue. There are some good things about this place: the receptionists are very friendly and there's hardly any wait time. I went there for a month before deciding I didn't want to spend any more of my or my insurance provider's money there, and in that month I did improve and got a significant amount of movement back. However, Issues I had with Manhattan PT: 1) Their sessions are extremely short, about 30 min, with a chunk of time eaten up by electric stimulation. I only have one other physical therapy experience to compare this one to, and at the other place my appointments were 60 min and felt much more well rounded. 2) I was told to do a certain number of exercises at home, but wasn't given much guidance on how many I should do and in what order. I was just told to do as many as I could. I don't feel this is productive direction, as I have a busy life and I usually carve out time to do exercises and then go about my day, not do exercises in my every spare moment. I know not everyone needs this sort of direction but I have a routine-oriented brain, and my previous physical therapist had given me a detailed printout explaining what exercises I should be doing, how many and how often, complete with photos. Extremely helpful. When I expressed to Manhattan PT needing a little more detail and direction, I was told I would be given some, but never was accommodated. This made me feel like I wasn't being taken care of as a patient. 3) I mainly worked with Joe, who I believe is the owner of the company, and he's a nice enough guy. However, he can be kind of sarcastic, and made a number of remarks that I felt were either inappropriate, unprofessional, or unproductive. For example, don't laugh when I'm not strong enough to do a squat the way you want me to do it. Again, this might be cool for some people, but not for me, especially when I'm in a state of healing and trying to get the confidence in my body back. 4) I wrote a pretty constructive e-mail to Manhattan PT, outlining all of my concerns, and never received a response. Here again I didn't feel they cared much for me as a patient, or as a customer. When a customer complains, a good business responds, period. I have since returned to City PT, my previous physical therapist, where I am much happier. The sessions are very well-rounded (and my copay is $10 cheaper, which is awesome), and include elements I wasn't getting at Manhattan PT (including massages! who doesn't like massages?), and the general attitude there is a lot more upbeat, fun, and positive. I wish I had just gone back there in the first place, but I'm the type who, when I have a good experience at one place, I'm curious to see if I can also have a good experience at another. read more

If you are diagnosed with Bell's palsy, please contact another provider. Personally I would recommend the Bell's palsy specialist at NYU rusk. I had an incredibly horrible experience at this office and will be reporting them to the better business bureau. I was diagnosed with Bell's palsy in December. I was desperate for anyone that could help me to get my face back. I did a lot of research and came across this office. I called them and asked them if they take my insurance, GHI. The woman told me that they typically do, but that during my first appointment they would call to find out that I am covered and that I would pay my typical copay for my first visit. I thought it was strange but was so desperate that I went anyway. When I got there I asked again if they take my insurance. They said that they would call during my session but typically they do. I had what I would have thought was an amazing session. The specialist seemed incredibly knowledgeable and seemed to know a lot about Bell's palsy. I was stoked. I got out of the appointment and spoke to the receptionist and she helped me book my next appointment. Only then did she inform me that my insurance would not be accepted and that I could by a 12 session package for over $1,000. I asked her why they don't take my insurance plan if she told me that they typically take ghi. She told me that the insurance company said that Bell's palsy is a cosmetic issue and it was not covered. Which was false. I have 16 sessions of physical therapy a year and can be granted more with a doctors request. I had not used any yet. I called my insurance company because I was appalled. Bell's palsy is most certainly not a cosmetic issue. My insurance company was confused and told me as long as the provider takes GHI I am covered. They told me I could file a complaint with the insurance if I had all the information of who called. I called the physical therapy office back and explained the situation. The receptionist then admitted to me that they never take GHI and that my insurance company never said anything about cosmetic procedures. That she needed an excuse and it was what she was told to do. I was beyond upset. What this company did was take advantage of someone that was desperate because her face was paralyzed. I would not recommend this business to anyone. Please call NYU rusk if you need help with any Bell's palsy issues. They took very good care of me. read more

I've had issues with my knee for several months when a friend of mine suggested that I see Bruce as he worked on his Shoulder and made his life much better. Bruce was not only professional, he was also very personable. He gave me tips and tricks that I can do on my own daily to help alleviate my knee pain. I also saw Jay for acupuncture, which I've never tried before, but Jay really put me at ease (I HATE needles) and he made a terrifying experience very pleasant and most importantly pain free. Ill for sure go back, and now that I've experienced acupuncture, I try it again. read more

If you are looking for a good physical therapy program, look no further. My experience there was nothing short of amazing! The staff are incredibly knowledgable and the facility is top notch (small, but contains all the tools necessary to recover efficiently). I had the pleasure of working with Erica most of the time after a tough shoulder dislocation, and after two months I am already back in the gym and feeling great. She took the time to walk me through many different exercises and explain exactly WHY we were doing them and what parts of the body they were affecting. The exercise difficulty and my shoulder comfortability increased proportionally, which helped make the process quick and effective. The few times that I worked with Magnolia, she was very helpful as well. Overall, I'd recommend Manhattan Physical Therapy to anyone looking to recover from an injury! 5/5 experience. read more

I was recently diagnosed with Bells Palsy, a form of facial paralysis due to a dysfunction in the facial nerve. I was given steroids and antivirals and told to go to physical therapy for 6 weeks. I searched all over the internet for a physical therapy place in NYC with experience in the field, and found none. It was extremely discouraging. I finally decided to go to a place that was close to work. The physical therapist was pleasant, however, he pretty much handed me a few facial exercise printouts, did heat stimulation on my back and sent me on my way. As soon as I left the appointment, I started calling other places. Manhattan Physical Therapy and Pain Center also happened to be close to work, so I made an appointment. I have nothing but great things to say about the place. When I got there I met Joe, who was knowledgeable about Bells. He told me what to expect, he gave me tips on how to go about my day, most importantly he really worked on my face and showed me how to do the exercises. Every time I went in for an appointment, my face got better. I also worked with other therapists like Meagan that really helped my face get back to normal. I have been going to Manhattan Physical Therapy and Pain Center for 4 weeks and I am 95% better. I would recommend it to anyone. read more

I came to Manhattan Physical Therapy because of a high ankle sprain that hadn't fully healed correctly as a result of a sports-related accident almost two years prior (I know, I'm an idiot). They worked magic on that thing, despite me wanting to still keep being as active as possible during treatment. Now I can wear high heels again, go for a run, play sports, etc. without any pain or swelling. You'll never have a wait time here, and you get the full attention of the friendly PT. i've had an excellent experience here with all the therapists. Their RedCord system uses gravity to help you with strengthening while at the same time controlling pain. I came here after seeing them listed in a blog as one of the best physical therapy places in the city; I'm very happy I found them. My previous therapist was good (with a different injury last year) but I felt like the pain was worsening with his treatment. This place uses the traditional methods plus treats your whole body, because the pain you have in one area could be caused by an imbalance elsewhere. They also have an acupuncturist to treat muscle tightness and all therapists and support staff are professional, very positive and focused on the patient. Their admin staff is pleasant and very good with insurance claims, they take care of everything, I just pay the copay. read more

STAY AWAY!!!! The people seemed nice enough. They claimed that they had contacted my insurance and the services they provide weren't covered by the insurance and offered me a "package" which was very expensive. I decided to pay it because my back hurt so badly. After calling my insurance to find out why they refused to pay they said "they never submitted a claim. Call them and find out why". I called Manhattan PT and ask why they never submitted a claim and was told by one receptionist who sounded very nervous that the other receptionist would have to help me. So I talked to the other girl and she tells me "well, we're actually not in your network"... excuse me?? If I had been told that from the beginning I would never have agreed to go there. So I asked for my money back and she agreed but sounded very angry that I had figured out their little scam. Agreeing to only give me back the money for the visits I hadn't used and telling me how much it was I said "wait a minute, you said I wasn't getting charged for the first visit" and I was told "well it would normally be free but since you bought the package on your first visit it's not free anymore"... WHAT?? Just avoid this place. I'd like to report them for being so awful and lying to me about my insurance so they could make money off of me... read more

Ive been to several PT's. These guys are so much better than anyone I have ever used. They are knowledgable, and worked super hard to fix me. I have become somewhat of an expert on lower back pain as I have suffered from it for 32 years. Their approach is not passive. They make you work hard at healing. read more
