This place is just right. The food is cheap and served fast by lovely waitresses (they add a lot to the atmosphere). Always a booth to sit in and the best Egg Creams in New York. I'll go again and again. And when you're a regular, they put your usual order in before you even sit down. (I've learned that if I DON'T want a tall OJ and my eggs over medium sitting in front of me within two minutes of sliding into the booth, I better mention it as soon as I walk in the door!) read more

I come back every 6 months or so and order something different, hoping that maybe just maybe something redeemable can come out of what I have come to regard as The World's Saddest Diner. Broccoli that tastes metallic. Mashed Potatoes that are of a consistency worse than the instant and taste like paper. Salads that I guess are technically vegetable if you count a mound of pale, nutritionless Iceberg with shavings of carrot on top. Dry, bland, overcooked, and unseasoned meats. I order breakfast hoping the simplicity would be impossible to eff up. But alas, the bacon looked and felt like the fat coagulated and then sat around for several days and then was fed back to the pig and vomited and refried. Maybe it's because I'm from New Jersey, which is diner heaven of the United States compared to this place. Maybe it's because even though my cooking skills are limited to "simmer everything in garlic and butter" I know for certain I can cook a better chicken breast. But I just want decent and edible albeit boring American food even at inflated NYC prices. Is that too much to ask from a diner? read more

Word to the wise: this is a true Brooklyn diner The food and the service are not consistent, but I've come to expect that. You just have to luck out and catch them on a good day. Prices are reasonable and if you order take-out/delivery, the food is often ready right away. Recommended for a quick bite in the morning. read more

I've been going here since I was a little kid. Was born and raised in this neighborhood and this place has always been a staple of the neighborhood. The food is always above what you can get in the neighborhood in terms of genuine food. If your looking for more than basic deli food and genuine food come here. I regularly have a 5-star experience at the Three Decker, but you need to know what to order. Note that my 5 stars are for the overall experience and not the quality of the food. "Foodies" will be disappointed. One comes here for atmosphere. It's like hanging out with your favorite aunts and a sarcastic uncle is in the other room (the invisible cooks) occasionally making wisecracks. (Waitress: "Are you cooking turkey?" Cook: "No, but I'm eatin' it!") This is just a homey, comfy local diner, not a featured spot in the Zagat guide, a great place to linger in a booth and do nothing with your friend(s). OK? If you don't want to go, GOOD, that just means I'll have another booth to choose from. Let me also add that you should definitely read the previous reviews. They are full of hilarious stories that will give you a preview of what's in store, plus other writers' reviews of specific menu "favorites." It is important to prepare for your first visit here. If you don't, it's definitely worth experimenting with the menu because the prices are cheap and the "local color" is entertaining at any hour of the day. Beware of (or be excited about!) going in the evening because some of the staff gets tired can have "crazy eyes" from running ragged on caffeine since breakfast. Best non-breakfast item (so far) is the meatloaf "today's special," which is available (haha) EVERY day and consists a delicious split pea soup with homemade croutons (or other soup of your choice...I haven't tried the others; this is so good), room temperature iceberg-cucumber-tomato salad, dinner roll, nice helping of perfectly steamed al dente broccoli, mashed (real) potatoes, and FOUR big slices of tasty meatloaf covered with gravy. For $9.95. I also recommend the chicken parmesan dinner, though it is a little pricey at $12.95. A previous reviewer did not like his pasta...and I wonder if it is because the marinara sauce tastes like it has NO SALT! I found that with some extra salt, the pasta and sauce was A-OK. Pasta was cooked well, not overdone. Observing the clientele, though, one can understand how some might require a low-sodium diet. I don't mind adding my own NaCl. It would be fun to go on a evening when there is some kind of awards show on TV. You can bet that it will be playing on the diner's big screen located above the Snapple refrigerator and Greek-urn-style fountain and that all are welcome to participate in catty comments about the celebrities on screen. I bear witness that the Three Decker does have more to offer than just breakfast. Just be sure to have them steam your vegetables (stick with green beans or broccoli). Their potatoes (including the excellent fries) are delicious. Cheesecake is delicious. I would not recommend getting anything boiled. They tend to overdue it. The turkey with stuffing is OK if you have a hankering for the thanksgiving dinner, but avoid carrots & peas, and be sure to have your salt and pepper at hand. I like to sit in the front by the windows, which I find to be much more atmospheric than the back dining room, which is occupied mostly by (and good for) families and not as well-lit. Or you could consider it "intimate lighting." I like my diners bright with windows on the street. The place is fairly clean (they just remodeled...and have clean new blinds so disregard older comment about dirty blinds...they could wash their floor more frequently, but I usually go at the end of the day anyway) and comfortable, except for a draft. One of the (I concur) incredibly hilarious waitresses told me there had to be a current of air flowing because "We're all menopausal women. You gotta understand." But I've seen no unsanitary behavior by sick waitstaff that earlier writers noted. I'm excited to see what their department of health letter grade will be! I have always left feeling better than before, so I am not worried. Another update to respond a previous reviewer: The "crazy owner" lost her bouffant and now sports a freshly-dyed-black Bette Midler--spikey something, I don't know what it's called. But it's great. On Halloween, kids came in to trick or treat. The cashier who flipped through coupon newspaper inserts all evening yelled at kids in a friendly, though cigarette-gruff-y, voice "We're all outta candies. Sorry! We don't have any more!" every 5 minutes. "Candies!" It's also a nice place to just pop in a get takeout, as they have lots of muffins, iced coffee and hot coffee for $1. Eat it, Starbucks. Eat it, "Cup" across the street ($2.50 for a cup a coffee indeed!). Count me among the local regulars. I now consider this place my dining room. read more

First off I never leave bad reviews I just tend to never go back but for this place they absolutely deserve this review. We ordered through seemless and the food didn't not arrive even after two hours. We're working and we understand it's busy but it's no excuse to wait for two hours. The lady on the phone even had the audacity to give us a attitude and blame us. I mean how long does it take for a couple of omelette and ice coffee. I will never order from there again. read more

Disgusting- the booth, floors, bathroom, were all super dirty. Even my menu was sticky. The food was disgusting. I am always looking for a good diner as I have kids and it's great to be able to take them and have something for everyone but this place actually grossed me out. This diner is as good as it gets! It brings you back down to earth. My family and I usually go there on Sunday's together. The food is abundant and high quality, but the best part is the people. It's family owned and operated and you can feel it. It's real! Irene who works there is an absolute gem. I usually tell her to "surprise me" with my order. This way, I don't have to chose anything and it's a fun surprise. She does the thinking and I do the eating. It's really special. Loraine who works there is also a sweetheart. There are regulars who sit at the counter who probably call the diner a second home....because they are treated like family. Their food is inedible. Mother in law insisted on going because it's the only diner nearby and that's a mistake I should have caught. I recommend not patronizing this place simply because their food is subpar and that's being generous. If you manage to mess up eggs and french toast something's seriously wrong in the kitchen. Worst experience I've ever had.... I waited for 3 hours to have a bagel and coffee delivered.... After waiting for two hours I called the restaurant every 20 min to inquire, each time I was rudely told it was on the way. The final time I was told they never got my order even though I was charged... They were rude and had terrible customer service. I wish I could give no stars.... I recently gave in to my curiosity and went to Manhattan diner with a close friend. This was the WORST place I have ever been to. Not only were the waitresses unbelievably rude and vulgar, but the food was disgusting. I ordered a medium rare burger, and received a burger drenched in blood. i asked to get it cooked more, and the waitress actually started to yell at us and say no. I refused to pay for it.The coffee was cold. I paid 12 dollars for a cup of coffee and an egg sandwich. I felt sick after, and could not believe how we were treated. Do NOT go here. read more

I have never been to this restaurant but I have ordered delivery from them many times, not because the food is great (it's below average diner food), but because there aren't a lot of good options in the area that deliver to my address. I have never written a bad review about a restaurant, but this one deserves it. They have left items out of my orders at least 50% of the time. They've been late plenty of times. But today they took the cake when I called to check on my order that I had placed an hour and twenty minutes earlier (with a delivery estimate of 30-40 minutes). The woman on the phone first told me the order was already out for delivery (we've all heard that one before). I asked her to confirm the address on the order and then she looked into it and told me that she still hadn't prepared the order yet because, according to her, I had placed the order about 50 minutes later than I actually had. I kept my cool because everyone makes mistakes. So I checked my confirmation email to confirm the time and let her know that I had in fact placed it much earlier. She said "If you placed it earlier, why didn't I get the fax until just a few minutes ago?" Well that's a question for your IT person, not me. But before I could tell her that she called me a liar and hung up on me. I then called to cancel the order. As New Yorkers we are accustomed to bad service, rude employees, and overpriced food. But when you deal with all those issues more often then not then there's a problem. I will not be ordering from here again. read more

the best parts about this diner are the people and the split pea soup. it feels so nice to go to a place "where everybody knows your name." we go about once every few weeks or months and if we don't show up, they worry about us! i'm not usually a big fan of diners, but the quality of food here is super. we love Irene and the way she takes care of us. it's so nice to feel so welcome and enjoy the homemade family recipes. neighborhood gem! read more
