Mamta is just amazing. She's warm and sweet and excellent at waxing. Both times I came in for Brazilians they barely hurt at all. She was able to determine the type of wax that would work best for my skin and used a method that was basically painless, just uncomfortable. Mumta is the cutest, little old Indian lady I've ever had near my nether regions. She is also the only one but that doesn't detract from how incredibly cute she is. I felt like I was in grandma's hands, although I'm not Indian and I would never want my grandma or anyone I know to give me a brazilian. There were some stray hairs left from the waxing, but she went over them closely with threading. I was left very smooth & soft! I used to always go to J'aime Day Spa due to all of the yelp rave reviews, but I would be left with so many in grown hairs & hairs that would be sticking out the next day. Mumta is hands down the best in NYC. She is one of the most down to earth individuals and would make you feel very comfortable. I have tried a couple other places in New York, some being fancy, and ended up paying way more than I would for Mumta. They would take such a long time doing their job, like they are sculpting, and in the end, the results would be same as Mumta's, maybe even worse if red areas is a problem for you. Mumta was a lovely lady, but I had a very bad leg and bikini wax here. Not only was I left with patches of hair, but I was burnt in spots all over my legs and lady parts, had blood blisters on my bikini line and the backs of my knees, and have developed a rash!! Not worth the low price and convenience of walk-in service - you get what you pay for here. Also, one week later: my hair is growing back already - I think she didn't get the roots :( I will definitely NOT be returning here. That's too bad, because she is very nice. read more

Manny the Barber has always been on point for me when cutting my hair. If you have not realize I am Asian and Asian hair is unforgivable sometimes. Especially to those who do not go to a barber who has experience working with Asian hair. I have been going to manny for almost a year and half since I moved here for graduate school. This is a funny place to get your eyebrows threaded but it's the place I'm going to keep coming back to. Since it's a unisex salon it's filled with men getting short haircuts. But then there's Mamta's chair in the front where a steady stream of ladies wait. She did an amazing job. She listened to my preferences and was meticulous. She took her time and seemed to go after each hair individually in the clean-up. It made me realize how rushed everyone else has seemed. I went here today for my first ever bikini wax and overall the experience was good. The woman (I guess her name is Mamta from reading these reviews) made me comfortable and responded to all my questions and concerns. When I asked for her to remove some extra hairs that were missed she happily took the extra time. The only negative about this place is the actual look and feel of the room. The bed I laid on for the wax had random stuff on it and she had me put my underwear in a basket with other random things, including her notebook which she uses to keep track of people who have bought packages. I just would have appreciated a more well-kept space when getting a bikini wax. I might come back because it was so easy to book an appointment and inexpensive, but not sure if I'd recommend it to friends. read more

Why? Because your pubic hair isn't going to go away on its own. In order to maintain a groomed nether region, women resort to various methods of hair removal, none of which are more painful than the Brazilian bikini wax, which was, little known fact, handcrafted by the devil. Alas, this cruel but effective form of hair removal is a necessary evil. But this service doesn't come cheap. Think about it from the waxers point of view: there is no guarantee that every veej is going to be pleasant to look at (or smell), and certainly not something everyone is going to want to put their hands all over, but it's their job, and they are brave souls. Sure, the process only lasts 15 minutes, the pain is excruciating, and the fact is that some stranger is touching your koo, but that is a small price to pay for walking out of that room feeling like the sexiest bitch in town. It's not that it's impossible to perform a bikini wax on yourself. I know because I've tried. I won't go into the awkward details of where I had to place my legs or the poses in which I had to hold my balance in order to reach some of the places that had hair in need of removal. Let's just say my yoga instructor would be proud. And that my mother would not. It is just easier when someone else does it because (1) Two people requires less contortion. You have to put your legs in strange acrobatic positions even when you go to a salon, but it usually isn't any more complicated than lifting one or both legs and propping them up on the waxer's shoulder or the wall. That's for amateurs. When going it alone, you must be very flexible and have very good balance. (2) After the first rip of the wax, as the now-empty follicles from which you have mercilessly torn your pubic hair SCREAM in agony, you remember how much it hurts to gets waxed and each successive pull becomes more and more difficult to accomplish mentally. It's hard to keep going because it's your own body, and there is something wrong about being the hand that causes pain unto yourself. Unless you're into that kind of thing, I guess, which I'm not. So even if the pain is the same with one person or two, it's just better when you don't have to inflict it on yourself. The home wax kit costs $18. A professional wax by Mamda, if you tell her Melody sent you, will cost you $20 cash including tip. Call her 15 minutes before you come in, tell her I sent you and make sure you agree on the $20 before going in. Don't expect any frills: ugly green walls badly in need of a paint job, no music, nothing soothing.
