This is my favorite bakery in Michigan. I have been going there since I was a kid, and the quality of the baked goods, the kindness of the staff, and the cleanliness of the store has never changed! I picked up cake on Friday, 6/25/21. Just one piece was cut from cake that day. On Saturday, 6/26/21, I opened box to serve. The upper layer of cake had split in half; all of the roses (which I paid $10 extra) had slid off cake and icing was just puddled in bottom of box! I tried cutting a piece from the other "half" of cake, however, while doing so all of the roses slid off this side as well! There was virtually no icing left on the top! For the $$$$ I paid for this cake, one piece, NEVER AGAIN! I should not have gone to this bakery for such an important occasion! Save your money and go elsewhere!!! read more

This is the first time I have written a review and I am doing so because this bakery needs to start treating their customers like they matter. Warning: If you are looking to order a cake for a special occasion and you want it decorated a certain way, this is NOT the bakery for you! I spent 45 minutes in the bakery ordering my cake, and supplying a picture. The clerk clearly wrote everything on a order form and stapled my picture to the order form. A few days later I received a phone call from the decorator as she wanted to go over how I wanted the cake decorated. She was extremely rude but promised to decorated my cake as we discussed. My husband went to get our cake right before our party and saw it was not decorated as it was supposed to be so he called me. I mean nothing was as I requested, down to the fact that I didn't want roses on the cake, but I got roses. I talked to her on the phone and asked why she didnt follow any of my instructions. She never apologized or gave me any reason as to why she decided to decorate my cake to her own specs and she was totally rude to me. My husband said the owner Marie was there and never offered any solution or discount. I called on the phone a few days later and talked to Mario and again, he offered no solution or discount. I paid $68.75 for this cake and I have learned a lesson, never pay in full up front, especially at this place. This bakery does not care about their customers. Shop elsewhere if you truly want a special cake. read more

This is a serious Italian Bakery. I had a cherry nut cake for a family members birthday and it was so good, I drove across town to get my daughters birthday cake there. My only gripe is the "speciality batters" which they have quite a few of, you have to order a minimum of 48 hours in advance. I ended up with a wonderful cake -- what she told me was their most popular, filled with canole cream. Sooooooooo goooood! Next time I am gong to custom order all the fillings in cupcakes so I can try the different flavors! Worth the drive! read more

They are next door to Antonio's market, and that's how we found them. The other reviewers have mentioned the high quality of the cannoli, and I agree absolutely. I have to add that making good cannoli is not rocket science - fresh crisp shells and lightly flavored and sweetened ricotta filling are all you need. The problem is that the filled shells rapidly get soggy and soft if they sit too long. Also, the ricotta (being cheese) starts to spoil. So, many restaurants and bakeries serve extremely un-Italian - let's call them goyish - cannoli made from some sort of artificial cannoli-shell-like objects filled with preservative-laced commercial vanilla custard. (Okay, yes, I eat them. But I make faces and complain.) That's why a good bakery like Mannino's carries both real cannoli and goyish cannoli. The tray with the real cannoli (it's on the right as soon as you walk in the door) is sometimes empty because they like to keep them fresh, but do not let that discourage you. Ask, and they might make some for you on the spot. Then you will know why Fat Clemenza said, "Leave the gun, take the cannoli." By the way, I love the people behind the counter. They know who pays the bills, and they are unfailingly nice to us customers no matter how crowded and hectic it gets. read more

I hated cannoli until I had it from Mannino's. I just never understood the draw, really- here's a dry, overly-deep fried flavorless crisp tube with equally bland whipped cream. Most of them taste like they've had that nasty ReddiWhip sprayed in there. Blech. Then, I had the Mannino's ricotta cream filled cannoli. There's an almost custard quality to the filling, and the pastry was light, delicately crisp, and melt-in-your-mouth good. I got mine with nuts capping the ends, much preferable to the ubiquitous maraschino cherry. I snarfled these while waiting for them to bring out the two cassata cakes I ordered for my italian friend's birthday. WONDERFUL cakes. Again, there was no skimping on the filling, it was the right ricotta mixture rather than a simple whipped cream. The yellow cake was the show stopper, while the chocolate version was only meh (and this from a major chocohound). The yellow had just the right balance of delicate, spongy cake to cool, thick cream- also, the buttercream frosting was the best I've ever had. The chocolate cake was heavier, denser, and the flavors didn't interplay quite as well as they could have. Of course, being Polish, I also had to grab a box of angel wings, just to see how they were. I broke into the box on my drive back to Ferndale; soon, I was covered in white powder like Bronson Pinchot in his infamous car scene in True Romance. Though not the best angel wings (cough*newwpalacebakery*cough), they were delicious and went well with my coffee when I arrived at my final destination. If you've never had cassata cake, I urge you to try it from Mannino's. Vito's on the eastside is also a winner, but the yellow cake version I received from Mannino's trumps everything else I've every had. Bonus: 2 full sized cakes only set me back about $30. read more

I ended up buying chocolate cannoli , regular cannoli (both taste veeeery good) , the ecleres was good too I didn't was crazy with the cream on the top , and the last was a small romantic raspberry cake if I'm not making a mistake with the name . Well I hate the butter creams on the cakes , and I hate when is not smooth and feels the sugar . But next time I wana try the cassata cake , so maybe I will be more lucky ! Let me just start off by saying that this is a review of two things: 1. My experience with Jessica Mannino, their go-to girl for wedding cakes 2. Baked goods that would make you fall to your knees in Italian bakery heaven. I had an appointment with Jessica (wonderkind of all things wedding cake at Mannino's) but wanted to stop in a few weeks before to check the place out. What can I say? I'm a sucker for baked goods and I have a problem stopping (not exactly great for a bride, eh?). My Mom and I stopped by and we ended up buying a ton (not a regret!) including peanut butter cookies, raspberry filled cookies, cannolis and much more. I ate them with no shame all the way home. Everything was airy, baked to perfection, but my absolute favorite would have to be the peanut butter brownie. Any blend of peanut butter and rich chocolate is the ultimate in guilty pleasures for me. I guess I'm not that hard to figure out. My second experience at Mannino's was my wedding cake tasting appointment with Jessica. I brought two friends along including one of my beloved bridesmaids. We were promptly greeted by the (very) pleasant Jessica and were seated with a combination of iced cupcakes (based on a selection I had chosen prior to coming in) and fillings for us to mix and match at our leisure. The experience was heavenly to say the least. Not only did Jessica answer every single question I had (is there a price difference between round and square cakes? are my combinations disgusting? do you have anything off-menu that you would suggest? what is the contingency plan for back up cakes in case of emergency on my wedding day?) with patience and a ton of advice. When we wanted to try more flavors, she brought us additional items from the kitchen (which she didn't have to) and spent way more time than scheduled talking to us although she had (this is no joke) 20 brides that day in total. The prices were good, the cakes were moist, the information was more than we could have ever asked for. Both of my experiences have been fantastic at Mannino's and I plan on returning very soon, whether I end up pursuing (or forgoing) a wedding cake. read more

I heard about this bakery from a friend. Ordered a cassata cake to have as dessert for Easter and the hour long drive was totally worth it! I had originally tried a cassata from another well known Italian market but was dissatisfied. Mannino's knocked theirs out of the ballpark! I recently purchased an array of desserts for a birthday party. The fruit cheesecake was the highlight of all the desserts! It tasted extremely fresh and not too heavy or dense. I would give that cheesecake a 5/5! Unfortunately the two different types of cupcakes and the bearclaw were closer to 3/5 stars. Great flavor, but very dry almost to the point where they could've been a few days old. Tons of options ranging from bread, cakes, cupcakes, and all variety of desserts. My family and I continue to order birthday cakes, graduation cakes, and baptism/communion cakes. I would have gladly ordered my wedding cake from here as well, but received a better deal elsewhere. Manninos has very good Tarelli cookies and Cassada cakes. However, the last few times I've bought their eclairs the chocolate frosting was absolutely tasteless. So disappointed as it used to be delicious. Wish they would use the old frosting recipe and/or better ingredients. read more

I live near this bakery, and have heard many great things! My mom and me were driving by and just made a spontaneous stop to try some things out. The guy helping us was very informative and gave us information on pricing, and the variety of bakery items they had. We split a red velvet cupcake with the most delicious cream cheese frosting, a tiramisu cup, and a cannoli. My mom and me LOVED the cannoli.
